The review build covered by Windows Central did not include Siege or Versus multiplayer.
Jez Corden’s Windows Central assessment finds a Gears prequel with striking horror atmosphere, visceral combat, and compelling character work—but a semi-open campaign whose detours and repeated spaces can blunt its momentum. Its biggest strengths are presentation and the familiar thrill of the gunplay; its clearest frustrations lie in how exploration is structured and how some large enemies respond to fire.

What this in-progress review covers
Windows Central’s Jez Corden reviewed the campaign in a build without Siege or Versus multiplayer. That means the assessment below addresses the story campaign only; it cannot settle how the full multiplayer package performs or whether those modes are worth playing. PC Gamer also said multiplayer was unavailable for its review and that its scored update would follow.

Why E-Day’s campaign stands out
Kalona makes the horror tangible
Corden highlights the detailed city of Kalona and the way its environments support a horror-laden tone. The campaign’s presentation and cinematic moments help give the prequel a sense of dread and scale rather than making it feel like a sequence of disconnected firefights.
#1 Best Overall
- AN ORIGIN STORY BEGINS — Fight alongside Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago in the gripping origin story of Emergence Day, as the Locust Horde erupts from below.
- A DARKER, GRITTIER THREAT — Face reimagined enemies and a terrifying underground invasion that restores the fear, dread, and intensity at the heart of the Gears of War series.
- MULTIPLAYER EVOLVED — Battle in Horde Siege for large‑scale PvE action or prove your skill in refined Versus PvP with greater precision and competitive depth.
- CLASSIC COMBAT, MODERNIZED — Experience signature cover‑based gameplay enhanced with updated movement, traversal, and controls that feel like Gears while playing like something new.
- CO‑OP YOUR WAY — Play online with up to four players across Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus, or team up locally with 2‑player split‑screen co‑op on console.
Characters get room to matter
The review praises the performances and character development, giving the story more emotional weight than action alone could provide. That character focus is a useful counterbalance to the campaign’s brutal encounters and helps ground its apocalyptic setting.
How the combat and movement feel
Corden describes the cover-shooter combat as polished and satisfying, with visceral gunplay and chainsaw kills delivering the impact expected from Gears. The reviewer’s criticism is not that the core loop lacks appeal; it is that combat and exploration do not always fit together cleanly, and some larger enemies fail to react convincingly when hit.

Movement changes the familiar rhythm
The official Gears gameplay update says cover and movement were rebuilt, describing E-Day as “a brand new game, built from scratch to feel like Gears but play like new.” In Corden’s account, that shift shows up in practical actions such as sprinting, using low cover, climbing, and vaulting. These additions broaden traversal while retaining the series’ cover-based identity.
Large enemies can feel resistant rather than threatening
The reviewer says some boss-scale enemies absorb gunfire without enough visible reaction. When hits do not seem to register physically, a tough encounter can feel less like a readable test of skill and more like firing into a sponge. That is a specific weakness in enemy feedback, not a blanket dismissal of the combat.

Where the campaign loses momentum
Semi-open exploration has limited payoff
The campaign’s semi-open structure gives players room to explore, but Corden finds that freedom more constrained than rewarding. Optional side objectives and collectibles can pull attention away from the strongest linear sequences without providing enough incentive to make every detour feel worthwhile.
Repeated spaces and pickups interrupt the flow
The review also points to repeated locations and scavenger-style weapon-mod pickups. Searching for upgrades can feel like busywork when it interrupts forward movement rather than enriching a fight or revealing something meaningful about the setting. The result is an uneven rhythm: focused, cinematic stretches are followed by exploration that does not always justify the pause.

The useful comparison is not simply whether E-Day looks better or plays worse. The review suggests weighing how its movement and traversal changes work alongside cover variety and verticality; whether its weapons and enemy hit reactions preserve the series’ physical feel; and whether semi-open exploration earns its place beside linear set pieces. Its horror tone and character storytelling are clear points of distinction, while the value of optional pickups depends on whether they enrich a run or interrupt it.
On the evidence available in this in-progress campaign review, E-Day’s promise is strongest when its atmosphere, characters, and combat converge. Its messiness comes from pacing and feedback: detours can dilute the campaign’s urgency, and certain large enemies do not sell the force of the weapons aimed at them.
