Gears of War: E-Day Looks Like It Deserves a Photo Mode

As of Ethan Gach’s October 2, 2026, Kotaku article, Gears of War: E-Day had no photo mode. Gach’s case for adding one is straightforward: the game’s reported visual range—from carefully lit city architecture to moonlit woodland—invites players to stop and frame a shot, while the usual screenshot controls leave the HUD and dialogue captions in the way.

Why E-Day’s environments invite screenshots

City streets and architecture

Gach describes detailed architecture and lighting in the city setting as part of what makes E-Day visually striking. That kind of environment can reward a closer look at composition: the way buildings frame a view, how light falls across a street, or where a character sits against the scene.

A different look after dark

The visual appeal is not limited to urban scenes. Gach also singles out a nighttime woodland sequence, where he noticed moonlight catching leaves and bark. The contrast between built-up city spaces and a quiet, dark forest gives the game more than one kind of image worth capturing.

These are Gach’s impressions from playing, not measurements from a graphics test. He also reports that the game still looked good on Xbox Series S, though he encountered lower resolution and choppy frame rates at some points. That account describes his experience; it is not a performance verdict for every Series S player.

What a photo mode could improve

A screenshot button can save a moment, but a dedicated photo mode would give players more control over how that moment looks. Gach’s practical argument is that players should not have to work around interface elements or wait for captions to disappear just to get a clean image.

As he puts it, “A photo mode wouldn’t just give players a bunch of extra settings to fiddle with while snapping pictures, it would also alleviate the need to fiddle with the HUD display or try to capture images in-between the ambient dialogue captions.” The appeal is therefore both creative control and convenience: composing an image deliberately, without the on-screen presentation interrupting it.

How the reported screenshot method works

Gach describes taking screenshots with the Xbox controller’s screenshot button. That is a way to capture what is on screen, not a substitute for a photo mode with dedicated image controls. His article does not identify a controller model or suggest that players need to buy a different controller to take screenshots.

What the report does—and does not—establish

At publication on October 2, 2026, Gach reported that E-Day lacked a photo mode, continuing the absence he describes across previous Gears games. The article presents a case for why the feature would suit this entry; it does not report a developer commitment, confirm that a photo mode is in development, or establish that one will never be added.

That distinction matters: the article is an argument about what the game’s environments and screenshot workflow call for, not an announcement about the game’s future features.
