The Crimson Omen is a recognizable franchise symbol tied visually to the devastation of Emergence Day, but official material does not provide a complete glossary explaining every individual icon or emblem.
What multiplayer icons mean
The Coalition’s multiplayer overview defines an icon as a simple, single-color graphic used in two places: above a player emblem in multiplayer lobbies, and as the mark shown when that player pings an enemy or object. In other words, the equipped icon is both a lobby customization and an in-match marker.

How icons differ from emblems and titles
These are distinct layers of the multiplayer identity display, not interchangeable names for one symbol:
- Icon: The single-color graphic shown above the player emblem in a lobby and used for that player’s enemy or object marks.
- Emblem: The background graphic behind a gamertag or Steam name in multiplayer lobbies, intros and outros, and scoreboards.
- Title: A short, equippable text string displayed below the gamertag or Steam name on the player emblem.
The Coalition says challenges can unlock customization items including poses, weapon-skin sets, banners, emblems, icons and base characters. Its overview reports more than 60 character skins at launch and four menu-music pieces at launch; those counts describe customization options, not the number of story symbols or lore icons.
What E-Day stands for
E-Day means Emergence Day, the invasion event at the center of the game. Xbox’s official synopsis places the story fourteen years before the original Gears of War, when Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago confront the Locust Horde as it erupts from beneath the planet Sera. The name therefore refers to the catastrophe that begins the Locust war, rather than to a multiplayer customization category.

What the Crimson Omen means
The Crimson Omen is a signature Gears of War franchise mark. In its E-Day controller announcement, Xbox describes a cracked, laser-etched surface inspired by the E-holes that scar the world; beneath the erupting-ground design, the surface reveals the Crimson Omen. That presentation connects the symbol visually to the invasion and the world’s destruction.
The announcement does not give the Crimson Omen a separate in-universe etymology. Its visual role is clear, but claims about a deeper canonical explanation should not be inferred from the controller design alone.

What the COG oath inscription means
Xbox Wire’s Collector’s Edition announcement identifies “I shall hold my place in the machine” as a line from the COG oath. In context, it expresses the Coalition of Ordered Governments’ emphasis on duty, order and each person maintaining an assigned place.

Are all E-Day icons and emblems explained?
No complete official symbol-by-symbol glossary for every E-Day icon, banner or emblem is established in the cited official material. A specific mark’s meaning should be explained only when its in-game label or an official source identifies it; a graphic’s shape alone is not enough to establish hidden lore.
