Choose Horde Siege if you want cooperative PvE missions, class progression, and teamwork across squads. Choose Versus if you want competitive 4v4 PvP, equal starting loadouts, and tactical fights over map position and Power Weapons. Neither is universally better: the right mode depends on whether you would rather work with other players or beat them.
What is the difference between Horde Siege and Versus?
Horde Siege is a cooperative mode against Locust enemies, built around objectives and extraction. Versus is competitive player-versus-player combat: every mode is 4v4, with teams competing over eliminations, zones, bombs, or a Power Core. Both use E-Day’s updated movement and cover mechanics, but the developer describes Versus as tighter engagements and Horde Siege as broader flanks and arenas. The Coalition’s gameplay update discusses that shared foundation and the modes’ different combat spaces.

Is Horde Siege co-op, and how many players can play?
Yes. Horde Siege is a 12-player cooperative PvE experience arranged as three squads of four on the same large map. Each squad has its own mission, while optional objectives and shared encounters can bring squads together—or create competition for resources and rewards. How Horde Siege missions work
Players select classes with distinct combat roles and equipment. Missions can ask a squad to secure, calibrate, repair, or defend a R.I.G.; another mission type has the squad survive ten waves focused on one R.I.G. Optional secondary tasks can reward Weapon Parts, equipment, and squad buffs.

Players collect shared Energy, then decide individually how to spend it at Supply Caches. At the mission’s end, the squad must extract successfully to keep the Weapon Parts collected during that mission. Class levels and loadout unlocks add a progression layer that is absent from Versus’ equal-start design. These mechanics are detailed in The Coalition’s multiplayer deep dive.
How long are Horde Siege missions?
The Coalition estimates Blitz missions at about 15–20 minutes, Siege missions at about 20–40 minutes, and Horde missions at up to 50–60 minutes. These are developer-published estimates, not independently timed averages; actual sessions can vary with objectives and squad performance. The range makes Horde Siege the more flexible choice if you want to choose between shorter and longer mission formats.

What do you do in Versus?
Versus is designed around 4v4 matches. Players begin with the same loadout weapons and equipment, and weapon mods are disabled, so the developer frames the competition around skill, teamwork, and decisions rather than unequal starting builds. Teams also fight for map position and Power Weapons.

- Conquest: Occupy and defend zones while accumulating enough scoring time.
- Demolition: Carry a neutral bomb to an enemy site and plant it. The team must defend the bomb without respawns; three detonations win.
- Crucible: Carry a Power Core into a moving, shrinking zone and defend it to score.
Versus launches with six new maps. The Coalition’s multiplayer overview characterizes all its Versus modes as 4v4 matches designed around fair starts and balanced gameplay. Exact match durations are not specified in the cited mode information, so do not assume every match fits a particular time limit.

There is no single beginner mode: it depends on whether you want to learn against opponents or alongside a team. If you want to understand Versus maps, modes, and tactics before competing seriously, start with Versus Social or Player vs Bot playlists. If you prefer cooperative play, Horde Siege lets you learn mission objectives and class roles with a squad, though success depends on coordinating around shared resources and extracting.

Which mode should you choose?
- Pick Horde Siege for cooperative PvE, mission objectives, class progression, and sessions that range from the shorter Blitz format to longer Horde missions.
- Pick Versus for direct competition, equal starting conditions, and distinct 4v4 objectives centered on eliminations, zones, bombs, or the Power Core.
- If you are undecided, try Versus Social or Player vs Bot to learn the maps, or choose a Horde Siege playlist that suits the time you have.
Platforms and online access
The official editions page lists Xbox Series X|S and PC, and says Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass can provide access. It also notes that online multiplayer may require a Game Pass subscription tier that includes online multiplayer. Check The Coalition’s editions and platform page for current platform and subscription terms, which can change. The August open beta contained only a subset of launch content; its availability should not be confused with the full launch offering. The Coalition’s beta FAQ covers that distinction.
