Earlier Gears instincts still help, but E-Day changes cover movement and weapon handling enough that sprinting, firing at range, and reloading all reward more deliberate timing.

How do I use cover in Gears of War: E-Day?
Make cover your default route through an encounter. The Coalition says, “Our battlefields are defined by their cover layout,” in its July 31, 2026 gameplay update. Read the spaces between positions before you move: identify where you will land, consider which enemies can see the route, and cross open ground only when the move is worth the exposure.
Choose the next position before leaving the current one
Cover is not limited to waist-high barriers. E-Day supports more cover shapes, heights, and actions. Low debris or a short wall may offer crouched protection; if the top of cover is destroyed, dropping prone can provide weaker protection. That is still preferable to standing exposed, but treat it as a temporary position rather than a safe place to remain.
#1 Best Overall
- AN ORIGIN STORY BEGINS — Fight alongside Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago in the gripping origin story of Emergence Day, as the Locust Horde erupts from below.
- A DARKER, GRITTIER THREAT — Face reimagined enemies and a terrifying underground invasion that restores the fear, dread, and intensity at the heart of the Gears of War series.
- MULTIPLAYER EVOLVED — Battle in Horde Siege for large‑scale PvE action or prove your skill in refined Versus PvP with greater precision and competitive depth.
- CLASSIC COMBAT, MODERNIZED — Experience signature cover‑based gameplay enhanced with updated movement, traversal, and controls that feel like Gears while playing like something new.
- CO‑OP YOUR WAY — Play online with up to four players across Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus, or team up locally with 2‑player split‑screen co‑op on console.
Use available movement according to the route: sprint for a longer run, slide from a sprint to close distance or reach cover, jump toward nearby ledges or vehicles, climb without first entering cover, or duck and slide through some gaps. A jump can open a route around a flank, but timing matters. The developer says slides cannot simply be spammed.
Commit to cover instead of cancelling at the last moment
The Coalition’s update says cover entry can be cancelled only within 1.5 meters of the object. That condition makes cover transitions more deliberate: choose a destination and commit rather than treating entry as an instant direction-change exploit. Once there, reassess where the threats are before choosing the next move.

What are the best beginner tips for E-Day?
- Read the encounter before crossing. Check the next barrier and likely exposed angles, then move with a destination in mind.
- Use movement for a reason. Sprint when a longer crossing is necessary, slide when its timing and distance suit the route, and jump or climb only when the terrain offers a useful path.
- Change position when it stops working. Some enemy types can pin you in cover or flush you out. If your position becomes unsafe, move or respond to the specific threat instead of trading fire from the same spot.
- Listen as well as look. Xbox Wire editor Danielle Partis reported in her August 25, 2026 hands-on preview that audio cues helped her notice enemies creeping up behind her. That is a preview observation, not a guarantee for every encounter; use sound as an additional warning.
- Keep allies in mind. Partis also reported AI squad members reviving or assisting her when she was downed. Her preview does not establish that this will happen identically in every situation, so do not rely on it as a substitute for avoiding dangerous exposure.
Which weapons should I use?
There is no established universally best beginner weapon. The Coalition’s descriptions suggest choosing by distance and handling, then learning how each gun behaves rather than holding the trigger and expecting every shot to connect.

| Weapon | Developer-described role | Practical starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Prototype Lancer | General-purpose rifle with a higher rate of fire and deeper magazine than recent Lancers | Try it when you want a flexible rifle; use short bursts where recoil makes sustained fire less effective. |
| Hammerburst | Fires an accurate six-round burst | Use its burst pattern deliberately rather than treating it like a fully automatic weapon. |
| Retro Lancer | Deadly at close range; can work farther away if recoil is controlled | Favor close engagements until you are comfortable managing recoil at range. |
| Snub | Fast-draw clean-up option | Keep it in mind for finishing an enemy when switching is more useful than continuing with the current weapon. |
These are developer descriptions, not a comparative ranking or independent test. The Coalition says projectiles use simulated ballistics and travel time, so moving targets at range may require leading your aim. Some automatic weapons reward short bursts. When aiming down sights, shoulder-swap to change your character’s position and look for a clearer angle around cover.

- Listen up, soldier. The world is in ruin. The Locust Horde has risen. It’s Human vs Horde, and here’s your mission: Pick a side, build a powerful deck, and win the war. The fate of the world is in your hands!
- Experience the gritty gunplay of the video game in this official two-player card game. Take command of the COG forces or the Locust horde and seize control of the battlefield, one chapter at a time.
- Strategise your way through each chapter, bolstering your forces with classic characters like Marcus Fenix, General Raam, August “Cole Train” Cole, Dominic Santiago, and Damon Baird.
- Every battle counts. Whatever happens in each chapter will change what comes next, so you’d better be ready to dominate. The deck you build and decisions you make will change the way you play each campaign, making this a game you can reload time and time again.
- Whether you're a hardened vet or a grass-green rookie, get ready to take cover and lay down suppressive fire. Your enemies are trying to take the line, soldier. You’d better shove back hard.
Manage reloads and weapon mods
Active reload returns, and the Gnasher and Breechshot use a round-by-round reload system. The Coalition lists the Gnasher as holding six shells, down from the previous eight. Learn the timing and loading rhythm instead of assuming an older reload pattern still applies. Weapon mods are available in Campaign and Horde Siege; availability depends on mode.
How do I survive the Locust?
Do not assume one firing position or weapon will solve every threat. The Coalition says enemy types can challenge players by pinning them in cover or forcing them out. Its examples include Armored Wretches that can disorient, elite Drones that combine tactics and loadouts, and a Seeders encounter requiring a specific close-range response. Those examples describe particular threats, not a rule that every enemy encounter works the same way.

React to pressure instead of staying fixed
If an enemy makes your cover unsafe, relocate or answer that threat rather than remaining still and trading fire. Partis’s Xbox Wire preview described Drones ducking behind cover, retreating, or attempting flanks after taking fire. Watch for movement around the sides of your position and be ready to shift when enemies stop presenting a direct target.
