Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel, not a remake of the first game. It takes place fourteen years before the original Gears of War, when the Locust Horde first erupts and Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago are still at the beginning of their wartime histories. The original game starts after that catastrophe, with Marcus and Delta Squad fighting an established war.
That timeline makes either game a reasonable starting point, depending on whether you want the fictional chronology or the series’ original introduction. E-Day keeps the cover-shooter foundation, but its rebuilt cover and movement systems, expanded cooperative options and new multiplayer mode give it a distinct identity.

Where E-Day fits in the Gears timeline
Emergence Day, usually shortened to E-Day, is the event that changes the planet and begins the Locust war. The official E-Day synopsis places the game fourteen years before the first Gears of War. Its campaign follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust Horde first emerges, rather than dropping them into a conflict that has already been underway for years.
Xbox’s primer for the original game describes the reverse side of that interval: the first released Gears of War begins fourteen years after E-Day, with Marcus and Delta Squad fighting back against the Locust. In practical terms, E-Day dramatizes the disaster that the original campaign treats as established history.

| Question | Gears of War: E-Day | Original Gears starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Chronological position | Fourteen years before the original game; the first Locust emergence | Fourteen years after E-Day; Marcus and Delta Squad are already fighting the Locust |
| Story role | Origin-story campaign centered on Marcus and Dom during the invasion’s beginning | The first released narrative entry, available in remastered form as Gears of War: Ultimate Edition |
| What newcomers learn | How the war starts and what Marcus and Dom were like at its opening | How the series originally introduced its world, squad and ongoing war |
The fourteen-year gap is important for expectations. Familiar characters can appear in both games, but they are not frozen at one age or status. E-Day shows Marcus and Dom at an earlier point in their lives; the original shows them after the catastrophe has reshaped their military service, relationships and priorities. Knowing the later game does not make E-Day pointless, and playing E-Day first does not turn the original into a retelling.
Should you play E-Day before the original trilogy?
Choose E-Day first for chronological context
If your priority is seeing the earliest event described in the series’ current story, E-Day is the natural first stop. You begin at the Locust invasion’s opening, with the central friendship between Marcus and Dom established during the crisis itself. This approach gives you the war’s origin before the original game assumes that history.
Chronological order can also make the original campaign feel like a deliberate jump forward. When you reach the first game, the Locust are no longer a sudden mystery; you have already seen the event that created the conflict. The sources establish that timeline, but they do not provide a complete chronology for every event in Gears 2 and Gears 3. Treat the comparison as “E-Day, then the original game and its sequels,” not as a claim that every later story beat has been mapped here.

Choose Ultimate Edition first for the original release experience
If you want to experience the series in the order players first encountered it, start with Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. Xbox presents it as the remastered original game, preserving the first campaign as the franchise’s initial narrative entry point while modernizing that release.
This is an editorial preference, not an objective ranking. E-Day is the earlier point in the fictional timeline; Ultimate Edition is the original starting point as released. Either route can work as long as you understand that E-Day is a prequel and not a replacement for the first campaign.

What not to assume about the trilogy
The phrase “original trilogy” refers to the first three numbered games. The evidence here supports comparing E-Day with the first game and identifying Gears 1–3 as the trilogy, but it does not establish a current package containing all three in every region. Store listings, editions and subscription access can change, so check the current Xbox or PC storefront before buying.
How the characters fit across the two eras
Marcus Fenix
E-Day uses Marcus as an earlier version of the character who leads the original campaign. He is present when the Locust first erupt, not fourteen years into the resulting war. That distinction lets the prequel examine his circumstances at the invasion’s beginning without pretending that the first game’s campaign has been replayed.

Dominic Santiago
Dom is likewise central to E-Day’s opening-invasion story. The official synopsis places Marcus and Dom together as the crisis begins, while the original-game primer frames Marcus with Delta Squad in the continuing fight. New players should therefore expect the same recognizable leads to occupy different points in their personal and military arcs.
The safest spoiler-light expectation is that E-Day supplies background and origin context, while the original trilogy follows the war after its first night. The available material does not support claims about every character’s exact age, rank or intervening event, so those details should be discovered in the games themselves.
What stays familiar in combat
E-Day remains recognizably Gears. The Coalition describes the series’ core around movement, cover, weapons and enemies, with cover-to-cover movement still central. The familiar rhythm—move between protection, expose yourself to attack, fire, and reposition—continues to define encounters.

The developer’s own description is unusually direct: “Gears of War: E-Day is a brand new game, built from scratch to feel like Gears but play like new.” That is a statement of design intent, not an independent review or a promise about difficulty, speed or campaign length.
What E-Day rebuilds or expands
More varied cover interactions
The Coalition says E-Day rebuilds its cover systems and supports a wider variety of cover types, heights and actions. This means cover is not merely a static waist-high wall repeated from one arena to the next. Combat spaces are designed around more ways to use protection and move through it.
Modernized movement and traversal
The official game page describes modernized movement and traversal. It also says familiar weapons return in reimagined form alongside new close-quarters weapons. Those statements establish broader movement choices and altered equipment without proving exact changes to running speed, weapon damage, enemy health or difficulty.
No hands-on performance test or independent balance study is established here. New players should therefore expect the cover-shooter identity to remain intact while treating the precise feel of each weapon, encounter and movement option as something to learn in play.

- Solo play.
- Two-player split-screen.
- Online campaign play for up to four players.
Xbox’s platform notes specify that split-screen is console-only. Online capacity and local functionality can depend on the platform and current service requirements, so verify those details for your region before planning a group session.
Horde Siege
E-Day also introduces Horde Siege, described in the multiplayer deep dive as a twelve-player evolution of the series’ co-operative wave-survival mode. Its larger player count makes it a separate multiplayer attraction rather than a prerequisite for understanding the campaign.
Versus play
The official page lists Versus player-versus-player modes as well. These multiplayer features expand the ways to play after or alongside the story; they do not change the chronological relationship between E-Day and the original trilogy.

Buying and starting responsibly
- Pick your order. Choose E-Day first for the fictional beginning, or Ultimate Edition first for the series’ original release order.
- Check the exact edition. Confirm whether a store listing is E-Day, Ultimate Edition or another compilation; the available evidence does not establish one universal all-three-games package.
- Verify your platform. Confirm Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC or Steam compatibility, and remember that split-screen is console-only.
- Confirm service terms. Game Pass access and online requirements can vary by region and subscription tier.
- Choose your play format. Solo is available, while two-player local and up-to-four-player online campaign options support different groups.
Optional collector note: the original-trilogy soundtrack
The original trilogy also has a physical soundtrack release, but it is merchandise rather than a way to play the games. The 2021 anniversary announcement described a six-LP Gears of War 1–3: Original Soundtrack Collection containing 89 tracks. The set credits Kevin Riepl with Gears of War and Steve Jablonsky with Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3; it also included a turntable slipmat and a USB drive with the Ultimate Edition surround mix.
That announcement does not establish current stock, seller authenticity or price. Treat the box set as optional fan merchandise and verify any present-day listing before purchasing.
The practical verdict for a first-time player
Start with E-Day if you want to witness the Locust emergence and meet Marcus and Dom at the beginning of the war. Start with Ultimate Edition if you want the original game’s release-era introduction and then continue through the numbered trilogy. Whichever order you choose, expect a cover shooter at the foundation, with E-Day adding rebuilt cover interactions, modernized movement, reimagined weapons and broader co-op options rather than replacing the series’ identity.
