Gboard vs. SwiftKey: Which Android Keyboard Is Better for Swipe Typing?

Neither keyboard has a documented, universal advantage in swipe accuracy or speed. Gboard calls its gesture Glide typing; Microsoft SwiftKey calls its equivalent Flow. Both trace a finger across letters to form words. The better choice depends on your language, the fields in which you type, and whether you prefer SwiftKey’s documented cross-space gesture and prediction controls. The fairest answer is to run the same short, personal test in both keyboards rather than trust an unsupported winner claim.

What the comparison actually measures

Swipe typing replaces individual taps with one continuous gesture: start on the first letter, pass over the remaining letters, and lift at the end of the word. The keyboard interprets the path, proposes a word, and inserts a space or prediction according to its settings. It is useful when one-handed typing, a large phone, or fast message entry makes precise tapping inconvenient.

On Android, Google labels this feature Glide typing and Microsoft labels it Flow. The names differ, but the basic action is the same. Google’s support page explains the gesture and warns that Glide typing is not available for every language: Gboard’s Glide typing instructions. Microsoft documents Flow’s gesture, prediction choices, and exclusions in its Flow support guide.

The official documentation does not publish a current head-to-head test of words per minute, error rate, or correction time. Consequently, this article does not declare Gboard faster or SwiftKey more accurate. Those outcomes can change with a person’s language, names, slang, punctuation habits, and learned vocabulary.

The table separates documented behavior from unknown performance. A “not stated” cell is not evidence that a feature is absent; it means the cited official material does not establish it.

How to enable swipe typing

Turn on Gboard Glide typing

  1. Open Gboard’s settings using the keyboard’s settings entry or the Gboard section of Android’s keyboard settings.
  2. Find the option for Glide typing and enable it. Google’s instructions show the relevant setting and the basic slide-your-finger gesture in Gboard Help.
  3. Confirm that the language you intend to use is selected in Gboard. Google specifically cautions that Glide typing is unavailable for some languages.
  4. Open a normal text field, place your finger on the first letter, glide across the letters of a word, and lift. If the result is wrong, tap the suggested word or correct it manually before judging the keyboard.

Android manufacturers can place keyboard settings in different locations, and labels can change between releases. If the Glide option is missing, check that Gboard is the active on-screen keyboard and that the selected language supports the feature.

Turn on SwiftKey Flow

  1. Open the Microsoft SwiftKey app.
  2. Select Typing.
  3. Open Gesture input.
  4. Enable Flow, following Microsoft’s documented path in its Flow instructions.
  5. Choose the post-word behavior that suits you: SwiftKey documents showing word corrections or showing next-word predictions. Both behaviors add appropriate spacing.

With Flow active, SwiftKey also documents a continuous gesture over the spacebar: finish one word, pass over the space, and continue into the next word without lifting your finger. That is a workflow distinction worth testing if you often compose several words in one motion.

Where the two keyboards differ in real use

Continuous multiword gestures

SwiftKey explicitly supports continuing over the spacebar into another word. For a user who prefers an uninterrupted motion, this can reduce the need to lift and restart after every word. It does not prove that the resulting text will be more accurate; the advantage is a documented interaction option.

The cited Gboard material describes Glide typing as a letter-to-letter gesture but does not establish an equivalent cross-space workflow. Do not interpret that omission as a performance verdict. If multiword flow matters, test it directly in the version of Gboard installed on your phone.

Corrections and predictions

SwiftKey gives you a setting choice after a flowed word: display possible corrections or display next-word predictions. Its documentation also describes three correction choices and using Backspace to revisit corrections. This may suit people who prefer to keep moving through a sentence while accepting or revising suggestions from the candidate strip.

The supplied Gboard documentation does not specify an equivalent set of three Flow-style choices. Gboard can still offer suggestions and corrections in ordinary use, but the cited material does not support a detailed one-to-one claim about how its post-gesture choices compare.

Language support

Language is a first-order decision, not a footnote. Google says not all languages work with Glide typing, so a keyboard that feels excellent in English may not offer the same gesture in another installed language. Verify the exact language layout you use instead of assuming that support for one language carries over to another.

SwiftKey’s Flow behavior is tied to prediction availability. If SwiftKey does not offer predictions in a field, Flow is unavailable there. Your test should therefore use the language, transliteration or layout, and word mix that you actually use, including names and technical terms.

Fields where gestures stop working

Microsoft lists password fields and some incompatible app fields among places where SwiftKey does not offer predictions and therefore does not offer Flow. A secure login box may require normal tapping even when Flow works everywhere else.

Android’s Explore By Touch accessibility feature disables SwiftKey Flow. If Flow disappears after an accessibility change, check that setting before reinstalling or resetting the keyboard. SwiftKey also says its Flow setting and its alternate Gestures mode are mutually exclusive; attempting to use both is a configuration conflict, not a typing-accuracy problem.

A fair five-minute test for your own phone

No official source cited here supplies a current accuracy or speed benchmark. A short controlled trial is more useful than a generic internet ranking because both keyboards learn from your vocabulary and behave differently across languages and apps. This is a test for your decision, not a published laboratory result.

  1. Use identical conditions. Select the same Android language and layout in each keyboard. Use the same phone, screen orientation, text size, autocorrect preferences where comparable, and a quiet messaging or notes field.
  2. Prepare representative phrases. Write 10 to 20 short sentences that resemble your messages. Include common words, punctuation, names, abbreviations, and any technical or multilingual terms you routinely type. Avoid choosing only easy dictionary words.
  3. Enable the features. Turn on Gboard Glide typing and SwiftKey Flow using the documented settings. For SwiftKey, note whether you prefer corrections or next-word predictions.
  4. Type each phrase by swiping. Use the same finger and roughly the same pace. Do not switch to tapping for a difficult word unless you would normally do so; record that intervention.
  5. Record intended words. For every phrase, count words that appear correctly on the first gesture, wrong words that require a correction, and words you had to delete and retype. Record punctuation mistakes separately so they do not get confused with word-recognition errors.
  6. Measure correction effort. Note whether you accepted a candidate, tapped a different suggestion, used Backspace, or abandoned the gesture. A keyboard that produces the right word but forces repeated candidate hunting may feel slower than one that makes an occasional easy-to-fix error.
  7. Test SwiftKey’s distinctive workflow. Try crossing the spacebar into the next word and compare it with lifting between words. Test both correction and next-word-prediction modes if you are undecided.
  8. Repeat difficult phrases. Run the same set again later, after each keyboard has had a chance to learn your normal vocabulary. Keep the two trials comparable; do not treat a single lucky or unlucky sentence as a verdict.

Your result should be a preference statement such as “SwiftKey required fewer edits for my bilingual messages” or “Gboard felt easier for my short English texts.” It should not be generalized into a claim that one keyboard is objectively faster or more accurate for everyone.

Privacy and learned typing data

Privacy settings are relevant when a keyboard learns words, names, and correction patterns. Microsoft’s official SwiftKey sharing FAQ states: “By default, nothing Microsoft SwiftKey learns about your typing leaves your device.” That is Microsoft’s description of its default behavior, not an independent audit.

The same FAQ explains two optional changes. Signing in with a Microsoft or Google account enables periodic transfer of word fragments to a Microsoft cloud service for syncing. Separately, opting into Help Microsoft to improve can share typing snippets and fragments for product improvement. Review those choices during setup and after account changes, especially if your messages contain confidential terms. The available documentation does not provide enough evidence to name Gboard or SwiftKey a universal privacy winner, so keep privacy preferences separate from swipe-performance judgments: Microsoft’s SwiftKey typing-data FAQ.

Which keyboard should you choose?

Choose Gboard first when

  • Your main language is confirmed to support Glide typing and you want a straightforward swipe feature.
  • You prefer to evaluate the keyboard without relying on SwiftKey’s Flow-specific multiword gesture or prediction-mode choices.
  • Your own phrase test produces fewer wrong words or less correction effort in Gboard.

These are fit-based reasons, not proof of a global Gboard speed advantage. Google’s documentation does not publish the benchmark needed for that conclusion.

Choose SwiftKey first when

  • You value continuing over the spacebar into the next word without lifting your finger.
  • You want an explicit choice between post-word corrections and next-word predictions.
  • Your normal fields provide SwiftKey predictions and do not trigger the password, incompatible-field, or Explore By Touch exclusions.
  • Your personal phrase test shows that Flow’s suggestions require fewer edits.

Remember that Flow and SwiftKey’s separate Gestures mode cannot be used together. Select the interaction model you actually want rather than treating both settings as additive speed boosts.

Keep both installed during the trial

Android lets you switch the active keyboard, so you can compare without deleting either one. Use the same phrases and language for both, then keep the keyboard that lowers your total correction effort. If one fails only in a password field or another restricted box, that is expected behavior documented by SwiftKey rather than evidence that the installation is broken.

Troubleshooting swipe typing

The gesture option is missing

  • Confirm that the intended keyboard is active and that you are editing its settings, not another installed keyboard.
  • Check the selected language. Gboard warns that Glide typing is unavailable for some languages.
  • For SwiftKey, verify that Flow is enabled at Typing > Gesture input and that the field supports SwiftKey predictions.

Swiping works in notes but not in a login box

SwiftKey Flow is not offered in password fields and some other fields where predictions are unavailable. Use regular tapping in those fields. This restriction protects the field’s intended behavior and cannot be fixed by changing the Flow gesture itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Flow stopped after an accessibility change

Android Explore By Touch disables Flow. If that accessibility feature is active, Flow will not operate until the conflict is removed. Also check that SwiftKey’s alternate Gestures setting has not been selected in place of Flow.

The keyboard keeps suggesting the wrong words

Do not judge after one sentence. Repeat your representative phrases, check that both keyboards use the same language, and count corrections rather than impressions. Include names and slang in the test; a keyboard can perform differently on personal vocabulary than on common words. If the same words remain wrong, compare whether accepting a candidate, using Backspace, or switching to taps is less disruptive in your normal workflow.

The practical verdict

Gboard Glide typing and SwiftKey Flow both provide swipe entry on Android, but the evidence does not establish a universal winner for speed or accuracy. SwiftKey has the clearer documented advantage for a continuous gesture over the spacebar and for choosing between corrections and next-word predictions. Gboard may be the better fit if its supported language and your personal vocabulary produce fewer corrections. Enable both, run the same phrases under the same conditions, and choose the one that leaves you with less editing in the fields where you actually type.
