Gazelle Wind Power says its new floating platform design for turbines rated at 18 MW or more could cut levelized cost of energy (LCOE) by 52% and capital expenditure (CAPEX) by 44% compared with the semi-submersible benchmark designs it assessed. Those are preliminary company estimates—not independently verified savings or results from an operating wind farm.
What Gazelle’s floating wind design changes
Announced on September 21, 2026, the design is a platform and mooring configuration intended to support turbines rated at 18 MW or more. The announced innovation is not a new rotor or generator. Gazelle describes a central counterweight connected to three Articulated Mooring Frames (AMFs), which in turn connect to near-vertical mooring lines. The company says this arrangement creates passive restoring force under wind, waves and currents without an active ballast system. Gazelle’s announcement

The configuration also includes a tripod support structure, upgraded AMFs and revised hull geometry. Gazelle says those changes improve hydrodynamic performance, mooring flexibility and load distribution while reducing structural weight and increasing damage tolerance. These are the company’s descriptions of the design and its expected performance, not independently established findings.
What the “half the cost” figures measure
| Claim | Gazelle’s stated comparison | What it does—and does not—establish |
|---|---|---|
| 44% lower CAPEX | Preliminary company estimate versus the semi-submersible benchmark designs assessed in Gazelle’s 2026 costing exercise. Gazelle | An estimated reduction in capital expenditure for that comparison; not a universal saving against every floating platform or a measured project outcome. |
| 52% lower LCOE | Preliminary company estimate versus the same assessed semi-submersible benchmarks. Gazelle | An estimated reduction in modeled lifetime energy cost for that comparison; not a verified reduction in the cost of electricity from an operating wind farm. |
Independent coverage by Renewables Now also presents the numbers as preliminary estimates against the semi-submersible benchmark used in the assessment; it does not independently validate Gazelle’s underlying cost model. Renewables Now, September 21, 2026

Gazelle’s public announcement does not provide the full benchmark definition, itemized costs, sensitivity analysis or an independent review of the new figures. It also does not identify the utility client involved in the basin-test campaign. Without those details, readers cannot assess how much the estimates depend on assumptions about the platform scope, installation, maintenance, project location or other costs.
How the platform is being evaluated
Gazelle reports that global performance simulations examined survival and power-production conditions. In those simulations, it says roll and pitch stayed below 5 degrees and tower accelerations and tower-base loads remained within project design criteria. The company also says it and a client completed basin tests comparing physical measurements with its numerical model to support further calibration. Gazelle’s announcement

Simulations and basin testing are useful development evidence, but they are not operating data from a commercial wind farm. Gazelle’s Nau Azul project page describes a demonstration off Aguçadoura, Portugal, intended to validate the platform in real-world conditions; that is planned validation, not proof of commercial performance.

Why a cost estimate depends on the comparison
A percentage reduction is meaningful only in relation to the designs and assumptions behind it. Floating-wind platforms include distinct concepts such as semi-submersibles, spars and tension-leg platforms (TLPs). Gazelle’s announcement compares its estimates with assessed semi-submersible benchmarks; it does not provide a complete head-to-head comparison with spar or TLP designs.

A 2026 peer-reviewed study of optimized semi-submersible designs for three hypothetical locations illustrates how much design assumptions can matter. The authors reported that their cost function rose 16% for one design basis and fell 16% and 32% for two others. Those figures belong to the study’s modeled cases, not to Gazelle’s design, and are not directly comparable with Gazelle’s estimates. The study found that environmental conditions and design constraints materially shaped the optimized designs. Rohrer, Bachynski-Polić and Hegseth, Marine Structures, January 30, 2026
A useful independent assessment of Gazelle’s claim would therefore need to make key comparison choices explicit: the environmental design basis and site, turbine rating, structural and mooring scope, installation and maintenance assumptions, and whether each result comes from simulation, basin testing or operation. CAPEX and LCOE should also be evaluated separately; one is an upfront project-cost measure, while the other expresses modeled energy cost over a project’s life.

- Realistic Wind Turbine Model: This wind turbine model toy mimics a real wind turbine to scale, and the most interesting thing is that its blades can also turn.
- 21.65inch Large Size Model: Compared to other ordinary wind turbine models, this wind turbine model has a large size, which can be installed up to 55cm/ 21.65inch.
- Wind-up Wind Turbine: This windmill toy adopts wind-up design that enables the blades turn automatically after it gets winded up. To wind it up, we just need to turn its blades clockwise for several rounds.
- Learn While Playing: This model of a wind turbine is not only a toy, but also a scientific and educational tool. It can guide children to understand the role of wind and inertia more intuitively, and cultivate children's interest in science.
- Suitable for Multiple Occasions: Kids can play with this windmill toy on their own or DIY transform it in the company of their parents. Teachers can also use it as an improvised teaching tool in the classroom.
What the earlier DNV statement does—and does not—cover
Gazelle announced in 2021 that DNV had issued a Statement of Feasibility for an earlier hybrid floating-platform concept. Gazelle’s 2021 announcement The company’s technology overview describes its central-counterweight and tripodal-arm concept and attributes earlier quantitative comparisons to that statement. This history is distinct from the September 2026 cost estimates: it does not establish that DNV independently verified those figures or that the newly announced platform has the same certification status.
