Both fuels produce lethal carbon monoxide (CO), and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says portable-generator CO poisoning kills nearly 100 people in the United States each year. For most households preparing for a shortage, a dual-fuel portable generator provides the best resilience: propane stores for long periods without going stale, while gasoline is usually easier to find and often delivers more power and runtime on the same machine. The right choice depends on local fuel access, storage conditions, required wattage and your ability to follow fire and electrical-safety rules.
The safety answer comes before the fuel choice
Fuel type does not change the generator’s most important hazard. A gasoline engine and a propane engine both burn fuel and emit carbon monoxide, an invisible, odorless gas that can incapacitate and kill quickly. The CPSC warns: “CO from a generator is deadly and can kill you in minutes.” Its 2022 report found that 81% of reported generator-related deaths occurred in residential locations.

Operate any portable generator outdoors only, at least 20 feet from the house or another occupied building, with the exhaust pointed away from windows, doors and vents. The CPSC’s winter-weather guidance is explicit: “NEVER operate a portable generator inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed or other enclosed spaces.” A porch, carport or partly open garage is not a safe exception because CO can accumulate in areas that appear ventilated.
Install working CO alarms outside every separate sleeping area and on every level of the home, following U.S. Fire Administration guidance. Test them before storm season and whenever you set up the generator. Alarms are a backup, not permission to place the generator closer to the building.

Gasoline and propane during a fuel shortage
Gasoline: broad availability, difficult long-term storage
Gasoline is sold at more filling stations than portable propane is, so it is often the easiest fuel to obtain at the start of an outage. That advantage can disappear when stations lose electricity, pumps cannot operate, roads are blocked or deliveries are interrupted. A station may have fuel in its tanks but still be unable to dispense it.
Gasoline also creates a planning burden. It is a liquid and its vapor is highly flammable. Store it outside living areas in approved, labeled, tightly closed containers, away from heat, pilot lights and other ignition sources. Never keep a can in a bedroom, basement or attached garage where a spill or vapor release can reach an ignition source.
Gasoline oxidizes and evaporates during storage. Old fuel can form gums and varnish that clog a carburetor, damage seals or make an engine hard to start. Honda’s storage guidance recommends using a stabilizer, using self-sealing containers and draining the fuel system when the generator will be stored for more than one year. Follow your own owner’s manual if its procedure differs.

Propane: stable storage, dependent on cylinders and refills
Propane (LP) is stored in sealed, pressurized cylinders, so it does not develop gasoline’s stale-fuel problem while the cylinder remains sound and the fuel is within its service requirements. That makes it attractive for preparedness: a properly stored cylinder can be ready months after a purchase without a gasoline-rotation schedule.
The trade-off is supply logistics. You need filled cylinders or a bulk tank, and exchange or refill locations may be closed, sold out or inaccessible after a disaster. A household with no existing propane supply can be less prepared than a household that already keeps several compliant cylinders.

Propane introduces pressure and leak controls. Use only cylinders that are in date, undamaged and approved for the application. Keep them outdoors, upright and secured so they cannot fall or roll. Inspect the cylinder valve, hose, regulator and fittings before connection. After connecting, apply a soapy-water solution to joints and watch for bubbles; never use a match, lighter or other flame to search for a leak. Close the cylinder valve and disconnect it for storage exactly as the generator manual directs.
Which fuel is statistically safer?
There is no cited national dataset that compares gasoline and propane generator deaths by fuel for fires, explosions or CO poisoning. It is therefore not accurate to claim that one fuel is categorically safer overall. The dominant life-safety factor is placement and operation: an incorrectly placed propane generator can kill with CO just as an incorrectly placed gasoline generator can.

Gasoline’s main fire risks are spills and ignitable vapor near a hot engine or another ignition source. Propane’s risks center on leaks, damaged hoses or cylinders and ignition of accumulated vapor. Both require outdoor storage, careful inspection and strict separation from flames and heat.
Storage comparison for preparedness
| Decision axis | Gasoline | Propane (LP) |
|---|---|---|
| Shortage supply | Common at fuel stations, but pumps may fail during a power outage or supply disruption. | Requires filled cylinders or a bulk tank; local exchange and refill capacity can be constrained after disasters. |
| Storage readiness | Liquid and vapor are highly flammable. Store outside living areas in approved, labeled containers. Fuel can go stale and damage the fuel system. | Sealed cylinders avoid gasoline aging, but cylinders are pressurized and must be in date, undamaged, upright, secured and leak-free. |
| Maintenance | Use fresh fuel and stabilizer; drain the carburetor or fuel system for long storage as the manual directs. | Inspect the hose, regulator, cylinder and fittings; close the valve and disconnect for storage as instructed. |
| Main fire hazard | Spills and ignitable vapor near hot engine parts or ignition sources. | Leaks, damaged hoses or cylinders and vapor ignition; never test for leaks with a flame. |
| Indoor CO risk | Lethal CO if operated too close to structures or in enclosed spaces. | The same lethal CO risk applies; propane does not make indoor operation safe. |
How much power and runtime do you lose on propane?
Propane commonly produces less rated output and shorter runtime from a small cylinder than gasoline on the same dual-fuel machine. The exact difference is model-specific, not a universal gasoline-to-propane ratio. A published example is Generac’s GP7500E dual-fuel portable generator: it is rated at 7,500 running watts and 9,400 starting watts on gasoline, compared with 6,800 running watts and 8,500 starting watts on LP. Generac lists up to 10 hours at 50% load on gasoline and up to 5 hours on a 20-pound LP tank. Those figures are the manufacturer’s ratings for that model and load condition, not a promise for every dual-fuel generator.
Starting watts matter when a refrigerator, well pump, sump pump or air conditioner starts. Add the running watts of the appliances you expect to use, then account for each motor’s starting surge. Compare that total with the generator’s running and starting ratings for the fuel you will actually use. A generator that meets your load on gasoline may not meet the same starting surge on LP.

Runtime also depends on load. The manufacturer’s “up to” figure is normally measured at a stated percentage of rated load; running a higher load consumes fuel faster. A 20-pound cylinder may last far less than the published light-load estimate if several heaters, pumps or kitchen appliances run at once.

Choose a gasoline-first plan when filling stations in your area are likely to remain accessible, you need the generator’s maximum output and you can safely rotate stabilized fuel. Keep only the amount allowed by local fire codes and your storage arrangement. Mark each container with the purchase date, add stabilizer in the amount specified on its label and rotate the oldest fuel into equipment that can legally use it before it degrades.
Before a storm, verify that your containers are approved and that the generator starts under load. Do not wait for an outage to discover that old fuel has blocked the carburetor. Turn the engine off and let it cool before refueling; spilling gasoline onto hot engine parts can ignite vapors.
When propane-first makes sense
Choose propane-first when long storage, no-spill handling and an existing cylinder supply are more important than maximum output. Count the cylinders you can legally store, confirm their dates and inspect them before storm season. Keep them upright and secured outdoors, protected from vehicle impact and away from heat or ignition sources.
Plan the refill or exchange route as carefully as the generator itself. Identify more than one local supplier, learn whether each location refills or only exchanges cylinders, and find out which cylinder sizes your generator accepts. During a regional emergency, a familiar supplier may be closed even when another location has stock.

Is a dual-fuel generator worth it?
A dual-fuel model is worthwhile when resilience to either supply interruption outweighs its higher purchase cost and the LP trade-off in output and runtime. You can use gasoline when stations are operating and switch to propane when gasoline is unavailable or you want to preserve stored gasoline.
That flexibility does not remove the need to prepare both fuels. Learn the manufacturer’s changeover procedure, including whether the engine must be stopped, whether the gasoline valve must be closed and how long the engine should run before connecting LP. Keep the correct hose and regulator with the machine, and never improvise fittings. Test the generator on each fuel before an emergency so you know how its behavior and available wattage change.
A single-fuel gasoline unit can be the better value if you have dependable fuel access and need maximum output. A single-fuel propane unit can suit a household with a reliable bulk tank and little interest in storing liquid fuel. The dual-fuel choice is primarily an availability hedge, not a guarantee of equal performance on both fuels.
Safe setup: an outage-day procedure
- Choose the location. Place the generator outdoors, at least 20 feet from the home, with the exhaust directed away from windows, doors, vents and neighboring occupied spaces. Recheck the distance if wind direction changes.
- Check alarms. Test CO alarms outside sleeping areas and on every level. Replace alarms that fail a test or have reached the end of their service life.
- Inspect the machine. Look for damaged cords, fuel lines, guards, mufflers, wheels and covers. Confirm the oil level and follow the manual’s weather and load instructions.
- Prepare the fuel. For gasoline, use fresh, stabilized fuel and keep the container away from the hot generator. For LP, inspect the cylinder, valve, hose, regulator and fittings; secure the cylinder upright.
- Connect loads correctly. Use outdoor-rated, heavy-duty extension cords sized for the load, or have a qualified electrician install an approved transfer switch. Never connect a generator to a wall outlet or otherwise backfeed the house.
- Start and load gradually. Start the generator according to the manual, allow it to stabilize, then connect appliances one at a time. Keep the total running and starting demand within the rating for the selected fuel.
- Refuel safely. Shut the generator down and let it cool before adding gasoline. For LP, close the cylinder valve and follow the manual before disconnecting or changing cylinders.
- Shut down for warning signs. If an alarm sounds, anyone develops headache, dizziness, nausea or confusion, or you smell fuel, turn off appliances, leave the area and call emergency services from a safe location. Do not re-enter until authorities say it is safe.
Electrical connection and transfer-switch rules
Connecting a portable generator directly to household wiring without an approved transfer switch can energize utility lines and injure or electrocute utility workers. FEMA recommends using a qualified electrician and the correct transfer equipment. A transfer switch also prevents incompatible circuits from being energized and makes it clear which loads the generator can support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you use extension cords instead, choose cords rated for outdoor use and for the generator’s current. Maintenance that prevents fuel-shortage failures
Gasoline maintenance
- Buy only the fuel grade specified by the manual.
- Add stabilizer at the product’s stated dosage when fuel will be stored.
- Record the date each container was filled and rotate it before it becomes stale.
- For storage beyond one year, use the manufacturer’s drain-and-storage procedure, which may include draining the carburetor and fuel tank.
- Run the generator periodically under an appropriate load, outdoors, to verify that it starts and carries the appliances you expect to use.
Propane maintenance
- Inspect cylinders for dents, corrosion, damaged valves or an expired inspection date.
- Inspect hoses and regulators for cracking, abrasion or heat damage.
- Leak-check every connection with soapy water after connecting a cylinder and whenever a fitting is disturbed.
- Close the cylinder valve and disconnect the hose for storage if the manual requires it.
- Keep spare cylinders upright, secured and outside living areas, and protect them from impact and excessive heat.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“The garage door is open, so it is safe.”
An open door does not reliably remove CO. Move the generator completely outside and maintain the 20-foot separation. If weather is a concern, use only a manufacturer-approved weather enclosure that preserves the required clearance and airflow; never improvise a tent or cover around a running engine.
“Propane is clean, so I can run it indoors.”
Propane still produces CO. Stop the engine, ventilate only from a safe location, move the unit outdoors and test the CO alarms before anyone sleeps in the building.
“The generator runs, so the fuel is fine.”
A gasoline engine may start and still have restricted fuel flow or a varnished carburetor that fails under load. Test it with the intended appliances and service it before an outage. For LP, a weak regulator, empty cylinder or leaking fitting can cause surging or shutdown; close the valve and inspect the system rather than bypassing a safety component.
“Any propane cylinder will work.”
Use the size, valve type, hose and regulator specified by the generator manual. Do not adapt fittings or connect a damaged or out-of-date cylinder. If you smell propane or see bubbles during a leak check, close the valve, move away from ignition sources and have the system serviced.
“I can plug the generator into a convenient wall outlet.”
That is backfeeding and can energize lines thought to be dead. Use individual outdoor-rated cords or a professionally installed transfer switch; never use a male-to-male cord.
A practical fuel-stock plan before a storm
- List essential loads: refrigerator, freezer, medical equipment, communications, heating controls, sump pump and lighting.
- Calculate their running watts and identify motor starting surges.
- Compare those figures with the generator’s gasoline and LP ratings, not just its headline wattage.
- Choose a primary fuel and a fallback based on local availability, storage rules and your existing equipment.
- Store only compliant quantities in the correct containers or cylinders, and keep them outside living areas.
- Test the generator on every fuel you intend to use, with representative loads, before storm season.
- Keep outdoor cords, a fire extinguisher rated for the expected hazards, spare oil, a flashlight and replacement CO-alarm batteries with the equipment.
- Write the startup, shutdown, transfer-switch and fuel-changeover steps where every adult who may operate the generator can find them.
Bottom-line decision
For many households, a dual-fuel portable generator is the strongest shortage strategy because it combines gasoline’s availability and higher typical output with propane’s long storage life. Select gasoline-first if maximum wattage and local station access dominate your plan; select propane-first if stable storage and an established cylinder supply matter more. Whichever fuel you choose, outdoor placement, CO alarms, correct electrical connections and disciplined fuel handling determine safety far more than the label on the tank.
