Gasoline vs. Diesel: Which Fuel Costs Less for Your Driving?

There is no fuel that is always cheaper. For your route and vehicles, compare fuel cost per mile: divide the local price per gallon by each vehicle’s actual miles per gallon (MPG). Multiply that result by your annual miles. A diesel wins on fuel alone only when its price-per-gallon-to-MPG ratio is lower than the gasoline vehicle’s ratio. If you are choosing between vehicles, add purchase price and other ownership costs; fuel savings by themselves do not determine the cheaper vehicle.

Start with cost per mile, not the price on the pump

A gallon is only a useful comparison when both vehicles travel the same distance on that gallon. The core calculation is:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Fuel cost per mile = local fuel price per gallon ÷ vehicle MPG

Then calculate annual spending:

Annual fuel cost = fuel cost per mile × annual miles

Use the gasoline vehicle’s figures and the diesel vehicle’s figures separately. Do not substitute a generic “gas MPG” or “diesel MPG” assumption for the ratings of the vehicles you are actually considering.

EPA fuel-economy labels provide combined city/highway MPG and also show consumption as gallons per 100 miles. Either format can support a comparison. MPG is convenient for the formula above; gallons per 100 miles makes differences in fuel consumption especially easy to see.

Why diesel often gets better mileage but can still cost more

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says diesel fuel “contains more energy per gallon of fuel than gasoline (generally resulting in higher fuel economy).” The word generally matters. Energy content gives diesel vehicles a useful efficiency tendency, but your result still depends on two measured inputs: the price of diesel and the specific diesel vehicle’s fuel consumption.

  • A diesel can use fewer gallons per mile yet cost more if diesel is sufficiently more expensive at your pump.
  • A gasoline vehicle can use more gallons per mile yet cost less if gasoline is sufficiently cheaper.
  • Two vehicles with the same fuel type can have very different costs because of engine size, vehicle weight, transmission, drivetrain and EPA ratings.

Therefore, “diesel gets better MPG” is not the same statement as “diesel costs less to drive.” Only the price-and-consumption calculation answers the second question.

Collect the four inputs that determine a useful estimate

Input What to record Why it matters
Fuel price Current local price per gallon for regular gasoline and on-highway diesel, with the date and location Retail prices vary by region and change over time.
Fuel economy Each candidate vehicle’s EPA combined MPG, or gallons per 100 miles The vehicle’s actual rating determines how many gallons your distance requires.
Annual distance Your expected miles per year A per-mile difference becomes a larger or smaller annual amount depending on use.
Driving mix Approximate city and highway use, plus relevant load or towing use Personal driving conditions can move real consumption away from a combined rating.

For a purchase decision, also record each vehicle’s purchase price, expected ownership period and any other cost categories you can support with reliable figures. Keep the fuel-only result separate from the broader ownership comparison.

Step-by-step: calculate your gasoline and diesel costs

1. Identify the exact vehicles or powertrains

Write down the model year, engine and drivetrain for each option. A comparison between two similarly equipped vehicles is more informative than comparing a small gasoline car with a heavy diesel truck. Read the EPA label for each exact configuration and use the combined MPG for a standardized first pass.

Fuel cost per 100 miles = gallons per 100 miles × price per gallon

Divide that result by 100 to obtain cost per mile.

2. Record dated local prices

Use the price you would actually pay in your area, not an undated national average. The U.S. Energy Information Administration maintains gasoline and on-highway diesel retail-price series. Its table showed a release date of October 6, 2026, with the next release scheduled for October 14, 2026. Retail values are volatile, so note the release date or the date you checked the price and the relevant regional series.

If you are comparing vehicles several months before buying, save the date of the estimate and plan to rerun it when you have a purchase decision. A result based on one week’s prices is not a permanent ranking.

3. Compute each vehicle’s cost per mile

For every candidate, divide price per gallon by the vehicle’s combined MPG. Keep enough decimal places during the calculation; rounding too early can hide a small difference.

For example, if an illustrative gasoline vehicle costs $3.10 per gallon and is rated at 30 MPG, its fuel cost is $3.10 ÷ 30 = $0.1033 per mile. If an illustrative diesel vehicle costs $3.45 per gallon and is rated at 40 MPG, its cost is $3.45 ÷ 40 = $0.08625 per mile. These MPG figures are teaching examples, not ratings for named vehicles or a claim about current market models.

  • Ideal for Divers: the mileage tracking book constitutes the ideal tool for divers with features specifically designed for auto mileage and expense logging; They provide a systematic way of recording mileage, gas usage, oil changes, and other vehicle related expenses incurred

4. Convert the result to annual spending

Multiply each cost-per-mile figure by your expected annual mileage. At 15,000 miles in the illustrative calculation, the gasoline vehicle would use about $1,550 in fuel (15,000 × $0.1033), while the diesel vehicle would use about $1,293.75 (15,000 × $0.08625). The fuel-only difference is approximately $256.25 per year in favor of the diesel example.

Change the annual-mile input to match your use. Someone driving 5,000 miles a year will see one-third of the annual difference shown at 15,000 miles; someone driving 30,000 miles will see roughly twice it, assuming prices and efficiency remain unchanged.

5. Test different prices and mileage assumptions

Run a low, middle and high price case rather than treating one pump price as certain. You can also run separate city-heavy and highway-heavy cases when the labels provide those ratings. This sensitivity check shows whether a conclusion is robust or changes after a modest price movement.

Find the diesel price at which the answer changes

The diesel option is cheaper on fuel when:

Diesel price ÷ diesel MPG < gasoline price ÷ gasoline MPG

Rearranging the equation gives a diesel break-even price:

Break-even diesel price = gasoline price × (diesel MPG ÷ gasoline MPG)

Using the illustrative 30-MPG gasoline vehicle at $3.10 per gallon and 40-MPG diesel vehicle, the break-even diesel price is $3.10 × (40 ÷ 30) = about $4.13 per gallon. Diesel below that threshold would cost less per mile in this illustration; diesel above it would cost more. The threshold changes immediately if either vehicle’s MPG, either fuel price, or your driving conditions change.

This is a mathematical break-even point for fuel only. It is not a recommended purchase mileage or a guarantee of real-world results.

Separate fuel savings from total ownership cost

A lower annual fuel bill does not automatically make the diesel vehicle the less expensive choice. For a vehicle purchase, compare:

  • Purchase price: Include the diesel vehicle’s premium or any discount relative to the gasoline alternative.
  • Fuel over your ownership period: Multiply annual fuel costs by the years you expect to keep the vehicle, then test more than one price scenario.
  • Maintenance and repairs: Use model-specific schedules and prices when available rather than assuming one fuel type has a universal cost advantage.
  • Taxes, registration, insurance and financing: Include only figures that apply to your location and transaction.
  • Resale value: Treat estimates as uncertain and state the source and date if you use them.
  • Capability value: If towing, payload or long-distance endurance is the reason for choosing a powertrain, account for that practical value separately from fuel dollars.

A diesel’s fuel savings offset a purchase premium only after enough miles and time have accumulated. Do not claim a break-even mileage without the actual vehicle prices, fuel economies, local fuel prices and ownership horizon. If the premium is not established, the break-even mileage is not established either.

Use the EPA label correctly

The EPA label is a consistent starting point because it reports combined city/highway MPG, consumption and an estimated annual fuel cost under stated assumptions. Treat the label as a comparison standard, not a promise of your personal result. Traffic, speed, temperature, terrain, tire pressure, cargo, towing and maintenance can all change consumption.

For 2027 model-year label calculations, EPA lists assumptions of $3.10 per gallon for regular gasoline and $3.45 per gallon for diesel, 15,000 annual miles and an adjusted combined MPG. Those are label-calculation assumptions published by EPA in 2026. They are not a quotation of your local pump price and should not replace a dated regional price in your budget.

When labels show gallons per 100 miles, a lower number means the vehicle consumes less fuel to travel the same distance. Multiplying that number by your local price gives a direct 100-mile cost, which can be easier to explain than MPG when comparing vehicles with very different efficiencies.

Account for city, highway and real-world use

City-heavy driving

Frequent stops, idling and short trips can produce a different result from the combined label. If most of your miles are urban, use the city rating where available and compare it consistently for both vehicles.

Highway-heavy driving

Long, steady trips may track closer to highway ratings, but speed, hills, weather and loads still matter. Use the same route assumptions for both candidates rather than applying a highway figure to one and a combined figure to the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Towing, payload and seasonal changes

Heavy cargo, trailers, roof equipment, winter fuel blends and cold weather can increase fuel use. If those conditions describe your driving, add a conservative scenario to the calculation. Do not present the resulting estimate as an official MPG rating.

Run the comparison in the DOE Vehicle Cost Calculator

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center Vehicle Cost Calculator can compare up to eight models or custom vehicles. It accepts purchase price, fuel type, gasoline or diesel city/highway MPG, fuel prices and driving-use inputs. Its specifications can change frequently, and its disclaimer says not all data have been verified; consult a dealer or manufacturer before purchasing.

  1. Enter each exact model or create a custom vehicle when the model is not listed.
  2. Confirm the fuel type and enter or verify city and highway MPG for each vehicle.
  3. Enter the purchase price for the transaction you are evaluating.
  4. Set gasoline and diesel prices to dated local values rather than leaving a default that does not represent your area.
  5. Enter annual miles and the city/highway or other driving-use assumptions that match your routine.
  6. Review fuel spending separately from purchase and ownership outputs.
  7. Save the assumptions and date so you can rerun the comparison when prices or vehicle specifications change.

The calculator is an estimating aid, not an endorsement of a product or company. Verify specifications and transaction prices independently.

Common mistakes that reverse the answer

  • Comparing gallon prices alone: A cheaper gallon can cost more per mile if the vehicle consumes more gallons.
  • Using generic MPG claims: Fuel economy depends on the exact vehicle and configuration.
  • Mixing rating types: Do not compare one vehicle’s city MPG with another’s combined MPG.
  • Ignoring the date and region: A price from another state or another month may not describe your purchase.
  • Confusing label assumptions with live prices: EPA’s 2027 assumptions are standardized inputs, not current retail quotes.
  • Projecting one year indefinitely: Fuel prices and your mileage can change; use scenarios over the ownership period.
  • Calling fuel savings total savings: Purchase price and other ownership costs can outweigh a fuel advantage.
  • Promising a payback mileage without inputs: A break-even distance requires specific prices, MPG values, premium and time horizon.

A practical decision framework

What your calculation shows What it means Next action
Diesel cost per mile is lower by a wide margin Diesel has a fuel-only advantage under the stated prices and ratings. Compare that annual saving with the diesel purchase premium and other ownership costs.
Costs per mile are close A small price change or driving shift could reverse the ranking. Run regional, seasonal and city/highway scenarios before deciding.
Gasoline cost per mile is lower The diesel’s efficiency does not compensate for its price under the stated assumptions. Check whether capability or another non-fuel requirement justifies the diesel option.
One vehicle lacks reliable MPG or price data The comparison is not yet established. Obtain the exact EPA rating and a dated local fuel price before calculating.

Track your actual cost after purchase

A simple spreadsheet or mileage log can test how your vehicle performs in your routine. For each fill-up, record the odometer reading, gallons purchased, price per gallon and total cost. Over several tanks, calculate miles driven divided by gallons, then divide total fuel cost by miles driven. Keep city-heavy trips, highway trips and towing periods identifiable so you can compare like with like.

This record does not replace EPA ratings for comparing vehicles before purchase, but it gives you a dated baseline for your own routes and helps reveal changes caused by maintenance, tires, seasonal conditions or driving habits.

Bottom line: calculate your ratio, then price the whole vehicle

Diesel generally carries more energy per gallon and often delivers higher fuel economy, but neither fact guarantees a lower driving cost. Use a dated local price, each vehicle’s EPA fuel-economy figures, your annual miles and your city/highway mix. Compare price per gallon divided by MPG, convert the result to annual fuel spending, and then weigh that fuel difference against purchase price and the rest of ownership. The cheaper fuel for your driving is the one with the lower cost per mile under the assumptions you can document—not the one with the cheaper-looking gallon.
