There is no universal winner. Diesel fuel contains about 15% more energy per gallon than gasoline, and diesel vehicles often post higher MPG. However, diesel has generally cost more than regular gasoline at U.S. pumps since September 2004. The lower-cost choice depends on the exact vehicles, purchase prices, local fuel prices, driving mix, annual mileage and how long you will keep the vehicle.
This comparison uses U.S. data and model-year assumptions from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Energy Information Administration (EIA) and Department of Energy (DOE). Prices, taxes, vehicle availability, regulations and fuel economy differ by state and country, so verify local figures before buying.

Gasoline vs. diesel at a glance
| Factor | Gasoline | Diesel |
|---|---|---|
| Energy per gallon | Lower than diesel | About 15% more than gasoline, according to EPA |
| Typical vehicle efficiency | Lower MPG than a comparable diesel is common, but the difference varies by model | Often higher MPG because of fuel energy density and engine design |
| U.S. retail price history | Regular gasoline has generally been cheaper than diesel since September 2004 | Generally more expensive than regular gasoline since September 2004; local exceptions occur |
| Carbon dioxide per gallon | Less carbon per gallon than diesel | More carbon per gallon, although higher MPG changes the per-mile comparison |
| Vehicle availability | Most new light-duty vehicles use gasoline | Less than 1% of all new vehicles produced for model year 2024 were diesel in EPA’s reported light-duty scope; diesel production is concentrated mainly in pickups |
| Best first question | What is the total cost per mile for the gasoline model you would actually buy? | Does the diesel model’s MPG advantage offset its fuel-price and purchase-price differences for your use? |
These are tendencies, not guarantees. A fuel type does not determine an entire vehicle’s value, and EPA’s diesel-production statistic excludes the largest heavy-duty pickups, work vans and vocational trucks.

More energy in each gallon
EPA describes diesel as denser, harder to ignite and richer in energy than gasoline. Its report says diesel contains about 15% more energy per gallon, which is a major reason diesel vehicles often achieve higher fuel economy. Diesel engines also use a different combustion process and hardware from gasoline engines. A diesel engine is not a gasoline engine with a different fuel system, and a conventional vehicle is designed to run on one fuel or the other.

MPG is not the same as operating cost
Fuel economy tells you how far a vehicle travels on a gallon. Cost per mile combines that efficiency with what a gallon costs:
fuel cost per mile = fuel price per gallon ÷ vehicle MPG
For example, if a gasoline vehicle returns 30 MPG and gasoline costs $3.30 per gallon, its fuel cost is $0.11 per mile. If a diesel vehicle returns 40 MPG and diesel costs $3.60 per gallon, its fuel cost is $0.09 per mile. Those figures are an illustration using EPA’s 2026 label-price assumptions, not a quote for any station or a prediction of your expenses. The diesel saves fuel cost in this example because its MPG advantage is large enough to offset the higher price per gallon.

If the diesel returns only 32 MPG while gasoline returns 30 MPG, the same prices produce about $0.1125 per diesel mile versus $0.11 per gasoline mile. That is why “diesel gets better MPG” cannot answer “which is cheaper?” by itself.
What fuel costs in the United States
Why diesel is usually pricier
EIA says the retail price of diesel includes crude oil, refining, distribution and marketing, retail operations, taxes and local-market conditions. Diesel prices have generally been higher than regular gasoline since September 2004, after often being lower before that. EIA identifies increased global demand for diesel and distillate fuel, plus the production and distribution costs associated with U.S. ultra-low-sulfur diesel, as contributing factors.
“Generally” matters: prices can cross over at a particular station, during a particular season or in a particular region. Compare the prices you can actually pay, including applicable taxes and any difference in station access.
EPA label prices are standardized inputs, not pump forecasts
EPA uses standardized fuel prices in fuel-economy labels so shoppers can compare vehicles. They are not live prices and should not be substituted for your local numbers.

Calculate the break-even for the vehicles you are considering
A fair comparison starts with two specific vehicles, not two fuel labels. Use each vehicle’s combined MPG, city/highway results, transaction price and the fuel prices available where you drive.
Step 1: Gather comparable vehicle data
- Exact make, model, trim, drivetrain and model year.
- EPA combined, city and highway MPG from fueleconomy.gov or the vehicle manufacturer’s current specifications.
- Purchase price or realistic transaction price, including equipment differences.
- Your local regular-gasoline and diesel prices, with the date and location recorded.
- Expected annual miles and the share driven in city traffic versus on highways.
- How many years you expect to own the vehicle.
Step 2: Estimate annual fuel expense
- Estimate gallons per year:
annual miles ÷ expected MPG. - Multiply gallons by the local price per gallon.
- Run the calculation for both vehicles using each fuel’s own price.
- Repeat the calculation with a realistic range of prices and MPG rather than relying on one unusually cheap or expensive week.
If your driving is split between city and highway, use the EPA combined figure as a starting point, then adjust your expectation based on your route. A vehicle’s city/highway ratings are more useful than assuming every diesel delivers a fixed percentage advantage.
Step 3: Include the purchase-price difference
Subtracting annual fuel bills is not enough. Add the upfront price difference, financing cost if relevant, registration or tax differences in your jurisdiction, and the other ownership costs that apply to the exact vehicles. The sources summarized here do not establish a universal diesel maintenance premium or a mileage threshold at which diesel always wins, so do not use a generic break-even rule.

years to recover price difference = diesel purchase-price premium ÷ annual gasoline fuel cost − annual diesel fuel cost
This is meaningful only when the numerator and both annual costs refer to the same vehicles, mileage, route and prices. If the diesel’s annual fuel saving is zero or negative, the fuel-only premium never pays back under those assumptions.
Step 4: Stress-test your assumptions
- Low-mileage case: use fewer annual miles or a short ownership period.
- High-mileage case: use your actual commuting, delivery or towing miles rather than an average driver’s mileage.
- Price-spread case: widen or narrow the diesel-versus-gasoline price gap to reflect your local history.
- Driving-mix case: calculate a mostly-city and a mostly-highway scenario when your use is uncertain.
The DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center Vehicle Cost Calculator accepts vehicle data, purchase price, gasoline and diesel prices, city/highway efficiency, annual mileage, highway share and driving habits. It can compare up to eight vehicles or custom entries and estimates ownership cost and emissions. DOE cautions that prices and specifications change frequently, that not all data have been verified by DOE or the National Laboratory of the Rockies, and that buyers should confirm current specifications with a dealer or manufacturer.

Build a realistic ownership budget
Put the fuel calculation on the same time scale as the purchase decision. Multiply each vehicle’s annual fuel cost by the number of years you expect to keep it, then add the initial price difference. If you finance the purchase, include the interest attributable to a higher-priced diesel. Registration fees, sales or use taxes and other charges can vary by jurisdiction, so enter the actual amounts that apply to your address rather than copying a national estimate.
Keep assumptions visible in a worksheet: date and location of each pump price, annual miles, city/highway split, MPG source, purchase price and ownership period. Recheck the calculation when a price, trim or model year changes. A diesel that wins under a 25,000-mile highway scenario may lose when the same owner drives 8,000 mostly-city miles, and a small local diesel-price premium can materially change the result over many years.
Do not assign a made-up maintenance surcharge to every diesel. Engines, emissions equipment, warranties, service schedules and dealer labor differ by model. Instead, obtain the maintenance schedule and service prices for the exact vehicles you are considering and add only costs you can document. The available government comparison tools support vehicle-specific inputs; they do not replace a current dealer quote or the owner’s manual.
When gasoline is usually the practical choice
You drive modest annual miles
With fewer miles, fuel savings have less time to offset a diesel model’s purchase-price difference. Calculate your own annual miles; do not assume a diesel is economical simply because its MPG number is higher.
You want the broadest new-vehicle selection
Diesel’s share of new light-duty production has become small. EPA reports that less than 1% of all new vehicles produced in model year 2024 were diesel within its reported scope, with light-duty diesel production since model year 2015 concentrated mainly in pickups. Gasoline powertrains are available across a much wider range of cars, crossovers and SUVs.
Your local diesel price or access is unfavorable
Diesel pumps are not equally common everywhere, and a long detour to find fuel has a cost even when the posted diesel price looks competitive. Check the stations on your regular routes and the fuel requirements of any remote travel.
When diesel can make sense
You drive many highway miles
High annual mileage gives a real MPG advantage more opportunities to reduce fuel use. Use the exact vehicle’s highway and combined ratings, then test whether the resulting annual saving covers the diesel model’s price difference.

You regularly carry substantial loads or tow
Diesel vehicles are concentrated in pickups and other applications where buyers may value their available configurations and work capability. Compare the specific vehicle’s published payload, tow rating and equipment; fuel type alone does not establish capability.
You keep the vehicle for a long period
A longer ownership horizon can allow recurring fuel savings to offset an upfront premium, but only if the diesel remains cheaper per mile under your local prices and real-world use. Include resale expectations only when you have a defensible vehicle-specific estimate; a universal diesel resale advantage is not established here.

Check availability, regulations and the exact fit
Fuel economics matter only after a vehicle meets your practical requirements. Confirm that the diesel or gasoline version is sold in your market, can be serviced along your routes and has the payload, towing, cargo and drivetrain configuration you need. State and national emissions rules, taxes and registration treatment can differ, and model availability changes by model year. Those factors can eliminate an otherwise attractive calculation.
EPA’s less-than-1% figure applies to its reported light-duty production scope for 2024. It excludes the largest heavy-duty pickups, work vans and vocational trucks, so it should not be used to estimate the entire commercial-truck market. If your comparison involves a heavy-duty vehicle, use that vehicle’s own specifications and pricing rather than extending the light-duty statistic.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fuel economy, carbon dioxide and what the comparison does—and does not—prove
EPA explains that diesel contains more carbon per gallon and generally produces more CO₂ per gallon when burned. At the same time, a diesel vehicle often travels farther on a gallon. Therefore, comparing emissions per gallon alone does not establish which of two matched vehicles has lower emissions per mile, and it says nothing by itself about full lifecycle emissions from extraction, refining, distribution, vehicle manufacture or disposal.
For a vehicle-specific operating comparison, calculate fuel used per mile and apply the appropriate emissions factors in a recognized calculator. Keep that result separate from purchase cost and from broader lifecycle questions. The DOE Vehicle Cost Calculator can provide an emissions comparison alongside ownership-cost estimates, subject to its data caveat.

Common mistakes that produce a bad answer
- Comparing MPG without prices: divide each fuel’s actual price by the exact vehicle’s MPG.
- Using a national average as your personal price: record local prices and the date, then test a range.
- Treating EPA label inputs as forecasts: the $3.30/$3.60 2026 values and $3.10/$3.45 2027 values are model-year assumptions based on 15,000 miles.
- Assuming a fixed diesel MPG premium: compare the model-year vehicle’s combined, city and highway ratings.
- Ignoring purchase price: fuel savings must recover the actual premium, not an imagined one.
- Generalizing from heavy-duty trucks: EPA’s less-than-1% 2024 statistic excludes the largest heavy-duty pickups, work vans and vocational trucks.
- Confusing per-gallon CO₂ with lifecycle impact: state which boundary your calculation covers.
- Using stale specifications: confirm trim, drivetrain, options and current pricing with the manufacturer or dealer.
A repeatable decision checklist
- Write down the two exact vehicles and model years.
- Record their purchase prices and EPA city, highway and combined MPG.
- Enter current local gasoline and diesel prices and the date checked.
- Estimate annual miles and highway share from your actual routes.
- Compute fuel cost per mile and annual fuel expense for each vehicle.
- Add the purchase-price difference and other known ownership costs over your intended ownership period.
- Run low-, typical- and high-mileage or price scenarios.
- Check whether diesel availability, payload, towing, cargo, emissions rules or other requirements eliminate either vehicle.
- Use the DOE calculator as a cross-check, then verify its vehicle data and your final specifications.
- Choose the vehicle that meets your functional needs at the lowest acceptable total cost—not automatically the vehicle with the highest MPG.
Bottom line
Diesel’s roughly 15% greater energy content can deliver higher MPG, but diesel’s usually higher U.S. pump price and any purchase-price premium can erase that advantage. Gasoline is often the simpler, more widely available choice for lower-mileage or mixed-use drivers; diesel can suit high-mileage, highway-focused or work-oriented buyers when a specific model’s fuel savings and capabilities justify its price. Calculate cost per mile and total ownership cost with your vehicles, local prices, driving pattern and ownership horizon before deciding.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is diesel always cheaper per mile than gasoline?
No. Diesel vehicles often achieve higher MPG because diesel contains about 15% more energy per gallon, but diesel fuel has generally cost more than regular gasoline in the United States since September 2004. Divide each fuel’s actual local price by the exact vehicle’s MPG. A diesel wins only when its efficiency advantage is large enough to overcome its per-gallon price and any higher purchase cost.
How much more energy does diesel contain?
The EPA’s 2025 Automotive Trends Report says diesel contains about 15% more energy per gallon than gasoline. Diesel is also denser and uses different engine technology, which helps explain why many diesel vehicles return higher MPG. The percentage is a general fuel-property comparison, not a promise that every diesel model will achieve 15% better fuel economy.
Why does diesel usually cost more at U.S. pumps?
EIA says retail diesel prices reflect crude oil, refining, distribution and marketing, retail operations, taxes and local-market conditions. Increased global demand for diesel and distillate fuel, along with production and distribution costs for U.S. ultra-low-sulfur diesel, are contributing factors. Prices can still vary by station, season, region and date, so check the prices you can actually pay.
What gasoline and diesel prices does EPA use on its labels?
For 2026 model-year labels, EPA uses $3.30 per gallon for regular gasoline and $3.60 for diesel. For 2027 labels, it uses $3.10 and $3.45, respectively. These standardized inputs assume 15,000 annual miles and are designed for comparison; they are not live pump prices, local quotes or forecasts for another model year.
How many miles do I need to drive for diesel to break even?
There is no universal mileage threshold. Calculate the diesel purchase-price premium divided by the annual fuel-cost difference between the two specific vehicles. If the diesel does not save money on fuel under your local prices and expected MPG, the fuel-only premium never pays back. Financing, taxes, service, resale and ownership length can change the overall result.
Does diesel produce less carbon dioxide because it gets better MPG?
Not automatically. EPA says diesel contains more carbon per gallon and generally produces more CO₂ per gallon when burned, while diesel vehicles often travel farther per gallon. Compare fuel used and emissions per mile for matched vehicles rather than comparing gallons alone. That operating result also does not measure full lifecycle emissions from production, distribution, manufacturing or disposal.
Are most new vehicles still available with diesel engines?
Gasoline offers a much broader light-duty selection. EPA reports that less than 1% of all new vehicles produced for model year 2024 were diesel within its reported scope, with post-2015 light-duty diesel production concentrated mainly in pickups. The statistic excludes the largest heavy-duty pickups, work vans and vocational trucks, so it does not describe the whole commercial-truck market.
Which tool can compare total ownership cost?
The DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center Vehicle Cost Calculator accepts purchase price, gasoline and diesel prices, city and highway efficiency, annual mileage, highway share and driving habits. It compares up to eight vehicles or custom entries and can estimate ownership cost and emissions. Prices and specifications change, and DOE says not all data have been verified, so confirm current details with the manufacturer or dealer.
