Short answer: choose GasBuddy when you want a dedicated list of nearby stations that can be sorted and filtered by price, distance, brand, ratings, or amenities. Choose Waze when you want to search for fuel and send the stop straight into your driving route; it can sort stations by price, distance, or brand after you set a preferred fuel type and brand. Neither app is a guarantee that the cheapest displayed number is your cheapest overall stop. Check the fuel grade, update recency, station eligibility, and the cost of any detour before you leave.
Coverage and data sources vary by country. GasBuddy says its price coverage is for the United States and Canada, while Waze and local government or retailer tools have different availability. Treat rewards, card discounts, and price locks as separate offers with their own terms, not as proof that an app’s posted pump price is the lowest.

Which gasoline price app should you use?
There is no universal winner because the useful feature depends on how you buy fuel. A dedicated comparison app is better for scanning many stations around you. A navigation app is better when the station has to fit an existing trip. A retailer or government service can be more authoritative in a particular market, but may cover only one chain or one jurisdiction.
| Need | GasBuddy | Waze | Retailer or government tools |
|---|---|---|---|
| Find nearby prices | Dedicated search; results can be sorted by price, distance, or both, with filters for brand, rating, and amenities. | Fuel searches can be sorted by price, distance, or brand after preferences are configured. | Usually limited to a retailer’s stations or a particular government scheme. |
| Navigation | The app listing describes mapping fuel prices for road trips; confirm the current route workflow in your version. | Navigation-first; a selected station can become a stop in the active route. | Directions or links out may be available, but this varies by service. |
| Price provenance | Its Google Play listing says prices are reported by the user community, so freshness can differ from station to station. | Sources vary by country and are not uniformly documented. | Government feeds can have formal reporting rules; retailer data may be limited to that company’s locations. |
| Geographic scope | GasBuddy states that its gas-price coverage is the United States and Canada. | Country support and station data vary. | Highly local; check the jurisdiction and participating stations. |
| Discounts beyond the displayed price | Pay-linked savings, rewards, and Flash Deals are advertised, subject to enrollment and eligibility. | The cited help documentation covers search preferences, not a payment discount. | Brand-specific rewards, price locks, or coupons may apply only at participating sites. |
Use the table as a decision guide rather than an exhaustive feature list. App labels, coverage, and terms can change, so verify what appears on your phone in your country.

What makes a fuel-price feature genuinely useful?
Sorting by price is only the first filter
“Best gas prices near me” is not a complete decision until the result is for the fuel you actually need. Select regular, mid-grade, premium, diesel, or another available grade before comparing. Then sort by price and switch to distance to see whether a small saving requires a long detour. Brand, station rating, car-wash or restroom amenities, and payment acceptance can remove an apparently cheap option that does not meet your needs.
Freshness and source matter
A price is useful only if it is recent and tied to the right grade and station. GasBuddy’s listing says its community reports supply prices, which means one location may be updated more recently than another. A government transparency feed can follow different reporting rules. Look for an update indicator or timestamp where the app provides one, and be cautious when a large saving depends on a stale-looking entry.
Missing stations can distort the list
GasBuddy’s help guidance warns that filters can hide a location. Club stations such as Costco and Sam’s Club may not appear until filters are reset or the map is used. If a familiar station is absent, clear brand, amenity, or payment filters and inspect the map before concluding that it has no listing.

GasBuddy: strongest for dedicated price comparison
Search and filtering controls
GasBuddy’s Finding Stations help page, updated November 6, 2024, describes a nearby search that displays around 50 closest stations. Results can be sorted by price, distance, or both. Filters include brand, rating, and amenities, which helps when the cheapest site lacks an accessible restroom, a particular payment method, or the fuel grade your vehicle requires.
The Google Play listing for GasBuddy: Find & Pay for Gas, updated July 29, 2026, says the service relies on its user community to report prices and covers the United States and Canada. That makes it a practical first screen in those countries, not a promise that every station or every displayed price is current. The listing also describes road-trip mapping, rewards, and Flash Deals; availability can depend on location and account status.
When GasBuddy fits
- You are stationary and want to compare many stations around your current location.
- You need filters for amenities, brand, or station ratings.
- You are traveling in the United States or Canada, where GasBuddy states its price coverage applies.
- You are willing to verify a community-reported price at the pump before committing to a detour.
When to look beyond it
If the app omits a local chain, shows sparse updates, or your country is outside its stated coverage, use a second source. A retailer app may have a current price for its own sites, while a government scheme may provide a different and more formal data feed.

Waze: strongest when the fuel stop is part of navigation
Set the preferences before searching
Waze lets you set a preferred fuel type and brand in its fuel-station settings. Follow the current instructions in Waze’s “Set preferred gas stations” help page. Those preferences affect the station choices shown in the app and in supported in-car experiences.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
After searching for fuel, Waze can sort results by price, distance, or brand. The key advantage is workflow: you can choose a station and add it to the active drive without switching to a separate navigation app. That saves time, but it does not make a farther station cheaper after fuel and time for the detour are counted.
Country-specific data limits
Data availability and sourcing differ by country. In its 2024 report, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) described fuel stations and prices appearing in Waze and Google Maps but said it could not confirm the sources of those navigation-app prices. Do not assume that a Waze price in Australia, the United States, or another market follows the same reporting process.

Australia’s mixed data landscape
The ACCC’s report, Making the most of fuel price apps and websites (2024), explains that PetrolSpy uses state and territory government fuel-price transparency scheme data for most Australian jurisdictions and manually entered crowdsourced prices in Victoria. It describes station listings that can be sorted by proximity or price. This illustrates why two apps can show different numbers without either having a universally superior feed.
Fuel-company apps can show only that company’s sites, so they are best used alongside a market-wide comparison. The ACCC report gives an example in Australia’s My 7-Eleven Fuel Lock: the terms it examined locked the cheapest price among the user’s five closest 7-Eleven fuel stores within a 250-kilometre radius, could be redeemed at any Australian 7-Eleven fuel store within seven days, and allowed up to 150 litres with a maximum discount of 25 cents per litre. Those terms may change; check the current offer in the app before relying on it.

The UK’s Fuel Finder arrangement
A different model is reported in the United Kingdom. In an October 8, 2026 report, TechRadar said Google Maps and Waze fuel prices in the UK draw from the government’s Fuel Finder service. The report says forecourts must submit a changed price within 30 minutes and that Google may omit a price when it lacks high confidence. Sarah-Jayne Williams, director of product partnerships for Google Maps and Waze, was quoted in that report as saying: “Accuracy is very important, so we will still show the petrol station and where it is, but you’ll only see a price if we have high confidence that it’s the right price,”.

This is a reported UK-specific arrangement, not evidence that navigation-app prices everywhere use government data. Check current official information if the provenance of a price affects your decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Calculate whether a cheaper pump price saves money
Compare the saving on the amount you will buy with the cost of reaching the station. For example, an 8-cent-per-gallon difference on a 15-gallon fill saves $1.20. If the detour adds eight miles and your car gets 25 miles per gallon, the extra driving uses about 0.32 gallon. At an illustrative $3.50 per gallon, that fuel costs about $1.12, leaving only eight cents before you value your time or traffic risk. A larger tank, a bigger price gap, or a station already on your route changes the result.
- Confirm the displayed price is for your required fuel grade.
- Check the station’s distance from your route, not just straight-line distance.
- Estimate detour fuel using miles added divided by your vehicle’s real-world miles per gallon.
- Multiply the price difference by the gallons you expect to buy.
- Subtract detour fuel and consider tolls, traffic, opening hours, and payment restrictions.
When the difference is small, the station already on your route is usually the lower-risk choice. When the difference is large, verify the price in a second source or by calling the station if the detour is substantial.
How to use a price app without being misled
Before leaving
- Set the fuel grade and preferred brand, then temporarily clear filters to check for omitted stations.
- Read the update time or freshness indicator when shown.
- Compare at least two nearby listings if the saving is material.
- Check whether the station accepts the payment method required for a card-linked offer.
- Confirm that a retailer discount applies to the exact location, grade, and transaction type.
At the station
- Read the pump display before authorizing the transaction; prices can change after an app update.
- Verify that the sign and pump price refer to the same payment condition, such as cash, credit, or membership.
- Keep a receipt when using a reward, price lock, or card-linked program in case the discount does not post.
If a station or price looks wrong
- Open the map view and remove brand, amenity, and payment filters.
- Search the station by name or address in a second app or the retailer’s own service.
- Check whether the listing is for the correct side of a divided highway or a similarly named location.
- Do not make a long detour based on an unverified outlier price.
Rewards, cards, and price locks are separate calculations
GasBuddy’s Membership Levels page, updated September 9, 2026, lists Pay with GasBuddy+ savings of 2–25 cents per gallon on card transactions when enrolled in Auto Pay, including a stated guaranteed 3 cents per gallon at stations nationwide where Mastercard is accepted. It lists Premium at $9.99 per month or $99 per year and Plus at $7.99 per month or $89 per year. These are provider-published terms for eligible Pay with GasBuddy+ cardholders, not independent average savings; participation, caps, enrollment, and prices can change.
To evaluate a paid plan, estimate your eligible gallons, multiply by the realistic discount rather than the advertised maximum, and subtract the membership fee. Check whether the station participates and whether the discount stacks with loyalty points or a retailer coupon. A retailer’s price lock can be valuable when you can buy later at a different location, but its geographic radius, expiration window, litre or gallon cap, and eligible stations control the real benefit.
A practical decision guide
Pick GasBuddy when
- You want a dedicated “sort gas stations by price” workflow.
- You need broad filters and are in the United States or Canada.
- You are comparing stations before starting a route rather than during navigation.
Pick Waze when
- You want the fuel stop and turn-by-turn route in one app.
- You prefer sorting by price, distance, or brand while already driving.
- Your local Waze listings have current prices for the stations you use.
Add a retailer or government source when
- Your local market has a formal fuel-price transparency scheme.
- A chain-specific reward or price lock outweighs a small pump-price difference.
- A station is missing or stale in the first app you checked.
Bottom line
GasBuddy is the better starting point for dedicated price discovery and filters; Waze is the better fit for navigation-integrated fuel stops. The feature that saves the most is not a sorting button or a headline discount by itself. It is a current price for the correct grade at a station whose detour, payment rules, and eligibility do not erase the difference. Compare sources when the stakes are high, verify at the pump, and treat every reward or price-lock term as conditional.
