Garmin’s free February 24, 2026 software update expands selected watches with gear-usage tracking, race-course planning, on-wrist sports scores, mixed-session recording, Garmin Fitness Coach, sleep alignment, lifestyle logging, Varia voice alerts and new accessibility tools. The update covers Venu X1, vívoactive 6, fēnix 8 Pro, Forerunner 570 and Forerunner 970, plus specified models in the fēnix, Enduro, tactix, quatix, D2 and Instinct families. The feature list is not identical across models.
Which Garmin watches receive the update?
Garmin announced the February 2026 release for selected devices rather than every current smartwatch. Named watches include Venu X1, vívoactive 6, fēnix 8 Pro, Forerunner 570 and Forerunner 970. Garmin’s compatibility table also includes particular watches in these families:

- tactix 8
- quatix 8
- D2 Mach 2
- Instinct models
Because Garmin assigns features by model, software version and sometimes connected accessories, owners should check the update notice shown for their exact watch in Garmin Connect or Garmin Express. A feature appearing in the February announcement does not mean it is available on every compatible device.
What the February 2026 release adds
Automatic gear tracking
You can assign gear to individual Garmin Connect activities and track usage statistics such as distance, activities, hours and days of use. The data can be viewed on the watch or in the Garmin Connect app. This is useful for monitoring running shoes, bikes or other equipment whose wear depends on accumulated use.

Race course planner
The course planner lets you build an event plan with cut-off times, rest plans, checkpoints and aid stations, then view the course on a compatible watch. It is designed for races and long outings where pacing and support locations matter as much as the route itself.
Sports scores on the wrist
When paired with a smartphone, compatible watches can show scores from 15 sports leagues. The phone connection is therefore part of this feature’s requirement; the watch is not receiving the scores as a completely independent service.

Mixed-session recording
Mixed-session recording is intended for workouts that combine disciplines or activity types. Availability depends on the watch, so the activity list shown on your device is the final authority.
Garmin Fitness Coach
Garmin Fitness Coach brings guided plans and workouts to compatible watches, with more than 25 activity types listed by Garmin. The actual activities and coaching options vary by model.

Sleep alignment and lifestyle logging
Sleep alignment connects sleep needs with upcoming training and daily demands. Lifestyle logging adds a way to record relevant day-to-day behaviors alongside health and activity data. Garmin also describes an Evening Report that can provide reminders about required sleep, tomorrow’s workout, weather and events before bed.
Accessibility improvements
New accessibility options include spoken watch-face data and color filters. These controls can make key information easier to hear or distinguish, although the precise options depend on the watch and its display software.
Rank #4
- Make a bold statement with this rugged GPS smartwatch, featuring a 0.9” display with solar charging lens and unlimited battery life with solar charging (assumes all-day wear with 3 hours per day outside in 50,000 lux conditions)
- Engineered with a supertough 45 mm fiber-reinforced polymer case and metal-reinforced bezel
- Built-in LED flashlight with variable intensities and strobe modes gives you greater visibility in the outdoors and provides convenient illumination when you need it
- Know your body better with health monitoring features, including wrist-based heart rate, advanced sleep monitoring, Pulse Ox and more (this is not a medical device, and data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked; Pulse Ox not available in all countries)
- Navigate confidently with a 3-axis compass, barometric altimeter and multi-band GPS with SatIQ technology, which delivers superior positioning while also optimizing battery life
Varia voice alerts
Compatible watches can provide spoken alerts from a paired Garmin Varia rearview radar. You need the radar hardware and a watch that supports the integration; the software update alone cannot create radar detections.

Training features Garmin added in August 2025
A separate Garmin update released August 28, 2025 added several training tools to compatible models. They remain relevant when evaluating what your watch can do after updating:
Best Value
- Easy-to-use running watch monitors heart rate (this is not a medical device) at the wrist and uses GPS to track how far, how fast and where you’ve run.Special Feature:Bluetooth.
- Battery life: up to 2 weeks in smartwatch mode; up to 20 hours in GPS mode
- Plan your race day strategy with the PacePro feature (not compatible with on-device courses), which offers GPS-based pace guidance for a selected course or distance
- Run your best with helpful training tools, including race time predictions and finish time estimates
- Track all the ways you move with built-in activity profiles for running, cycling, track run, virtual run, pool swim, Pilates, HIIT, breathwork and more
- Running tolerance: estimates the impact of each run and recommends a weekly maximum mileage.
- Garmin Triathlon Coach: provides triathlon-focused guidance on supported watches.
- Track-format daily suggested workouts: adapts suggested sessions for track running.
- Running economy: adds an efficiency-oriented running metric.
- Step speed loss: measures a running-form factor related to speed reduction at foot strike.
- Evening Report: summarizes sleep needs and the next day’s workout, weather and events.
- Smart Wake Alarm: adds a wake-up option intended to use sleep timing.
Running economy and step speed loss require Garmin HRM 600, sold separately. Without that heart-rate monitor, those two metrics will not be available even if the watch supports the underlying software.

| Feature or capability | Requirement or limitation |
|---|---|
| Gear tracking, course planning, Fitness Coach and lifestyle tools | Availability varies by compatible watch model; Garmin Connect is used for setup or data review where applicable. |
| On-wrist sports scores | Compatible watch paired with a smartphone; 15 leagues are supported. |
| Running economy and step speed loss | Compatible watch plus Garmin HRM 600 heart-rate monitor, sold separately. |
| Varia voice alerts | Compatible watch plus a paired Garmin Varia rearview radar. |
| Premium golf functions | Garmin Golf Membership is required on supported models and features. Garmin’s June 2, 2026 compatibility information specifically lists Venu 4, vívoactive 6 and D2 Air X15 for premium golf features. |
| Recovery mode, workout execution score, mobility activity and health-status history | Support is mapped by model in Garmin’s June 2, 2026 update; these functions are not universal across the product line. |
How to install the free update
- Enable automatic updates: On the watch, leave software updates enabled in its system settings.
- Sync with Garmin Connect: Open the Garmin Connect app on your paired smartphone and synchronize the watch. If an update is available for your model, Garmin Connect can transfer it.
- Use Garmin Express if needed: Connect the watch to a computer running Garmin Express and follow the software-update prompt.
- Complete installation: Keep the watch charged and connected until installation finishes. The watch may restart; do not disconnect it during the update.
The February 2026 release is a software update rather than a separately purchased upgrade. Garmin’s announcement describes it as free, although optional hardware such as HRM 600 or Varia radar and the paid Garmin Golf Membership can add costs for specific functions.
What owners should check before relying on a new feature
- Confirm the exact model name, not just the product family.
- Install the latest Garmin Connect phone app and synchronize after the watch software updates.
- Check whether a smartphone, HRM 600, Varia radar or Golf Membership is listed as a prerequisite.
- Look for the feature in the watch’s activity, training, health or sensors menus; absence usually indicates model-level incompatibility rather than a failed installation.
- For sports scores, keep the phone paired and connected because the feature depends on smartphone data.
What Garmin has not quantified
Garmin has not published one aggregate percentage for performance gains, battery-life changes or user adoption from this release. The update should therefore be judged by the functions it adds to a particular watch, not by an unsupported claim of a universal speed, endurance or battery improvement.
