The phone you own is the first decision. Garmin Venu 3 works with compatible Android phones and iPhones through Garmin Connect, while Apple Watch Series 9 requires an iPhone XS or newer. If you use Android, the Venu 3 is the only compatible choice in this comparison. If you use an iPhone, choose between Garmin’s longer battery life and training-focused dashboard and Apple’s watchOS integration, health features and wider Apple-device experience.
Compatibility comes before every other comparison
A smartwatch can have the right sensors and workout tools yet still be the wrong purchase if it cannot pair with your phone. Venu 3 communicates with compatible Android and Apple phones through the Garmin Connect app. Garmin’s current requirements list iOS 18.2 or later and Android 9 or later, with qualifications for Android Go, Google Play support and some handsets that have not been tested.

Battery: Venu 3 charges far less often
Garmin rates Venu 3 for up to 14 days in smartwatch mode. With its always-on display enabled, Garmin lists up to five days. The same product specifications list up to 26 hours using GPS-only GNSS, up to 20 hours with all-systems GNSS and up to 11 hours with all-systems GNSS while playing music.

Apple rates Series 9 for up to 18 hours of normal use or up to 36 hours in Low Power Mode. Apple’s 18-hour estimate is based on 90 time checks, 90 notifications, 45 minutes of app use and a 60-minute workout with Bluetooth music playback. In Apple’s GPS test, the watch remained connected to an iPhone over Bluetooth throughout; the cellular test included four hours of LTE use and 14 hours connected to an iPhone by Bluetooth.
Those figures are not a controlled head-to-head test. Garmin and Apple use different modes, settings and workloads, and real runtime changes with display brightness, notifications, sensors, GPS, music, cellular service and software. The useful conclusion is about routine: Venu 3’s manufacturer rating gives it a substantial charging-interval advantage, while Series 9 is designed around daily charging and can extend runtime with Low Power Mode.

Choose Venu 3 if charging every day is inconvenient, if you track sleep continuously or if you regularly take multi-hour GPS activities. Choose Series 9 if overnight charging fits your routine and Apple’s platform benefits matter more than maximum time between charges.

Garmin Venu 3’s health dashboard
Garmin highlights sleep score and sleep insights, Sleep Coach, Body Battery, stress tracking and broad activity monitoring on Venu 3. Its materials also list a Garmin ECG app. These tools are designed to help you review trends and recovery signals in Garmin Connect rather than simply record an isolated workout.
Garmin’s ECG app requires a supported device and current app and watch software. Availability can vary by region and regulatory status. Treat the readings as wellness information and follow Garmin’s current instructions for any health-related feature.

Apple Watch Series 9 health features
Apple lists an ECG app, heart-rate notifications, irregular-rhythm notifications, sleep-stage tracking and cycle tracking. Series 9 also includes a temperature sensor, but Apple says that sensor is not intended for medical use. Apple states that its ECG app is intended for people aged 22 and older and that individual features have specific limitations.

Series 9 is a strong fit if you already use Apple’s Health and Workout apps, switch between Apple devices, or want workout controls and notifications integrated with an iPhone. Case diameter is not the same as display area, thickness or perceived comfort. If possible, try the watch on your wrist, especially if you sleep in it or prefer a smaller case. A snug fit helps optical sensors maintain contact during workouts, while a band that is too tight can become uncomfortable during long wear.
Water resistance, charging and everyday durability
Garmin lists Venu 3 as swim-rated to 5 ATM and supplies a proprietary plug charger. Apple lists Series 9 as water resistant to 50 metres and includes a magnetic USB-C charging cable. These are each manufacturer’s descriptions, not a direct laboratory durability comparison.
Water resistance is not permanent and does not mean either watch is suitable for every water activity. Follow the manufacturer’s care guidance, avoid treating a rating as a depth guarantee, and inspect the case and seals after impact or repair.

- Check size and regional features. Compare the case and wrist ranges, then confirm that ECG and other health functions are available for your region, age and software version.

Assuming a feature list proves medical capability
ECG, rhythm notifications and temperature measurements have eligibility rules and limitations. Read the current vendor guidance for your country and use clinical advice for symptoms or diagnosis.

Garmin Venu 3 is the practical choice for Android users and the stronger option for anyone who prioritizes a multi-day charging interval, Garmin’s recovery-oriented summaries and cross-platform flexibility. Apple Watch Series 9 is the better fit for iPhone owners who want watchOS, Apple’s health and workout features and seamless integration with other Apple devices. Neither is an all-purpose winner: phone compatibility decides whether Series 9 is available at all, and your charging routine and preferred fitness ecosystem decide which compatible watch makes more sense.
