Short answer: Garmin Venu 3 is a wellness-focused GPS smartwatch for people who want an AMOLED screen, sleep and health insights, everyday fitness tracking, onboard music, contactless payments, and phone-assisted calls in one watch. The purchase decision comes down to four checks: whether the 45 mm case suits your wrist, whether your phone supports the smart features you expect, whether its mode-dependent battery estimates fit your routine, and whether Garmin Pay and safety functions work in your country and with your bank.
There are two models in the series. Venu 3 has a 45 × 45 × 12 mm case and is specified for wrists measuring 135–200 mm around. Venu 3S is the smaller alternative, but you should verify its current case dimensions, wrist range, and band specification rather than assuming they match Venu 3.

What the Garmin Venu 3 is—and who it suits
Venu 3 combines a conventional smartwatch feature set with Garmin’s health and activity platform. It has a color AMOLED touchscreen, GPS, sleep scoring and coaching, heart-rate and wellness measurements, more than 30 sports apps, music storage, Garmin Pay, and a speaker and microphone for calls routed through a compatible paired phone. The watch is rated “Swim, 5 ATM,” so it is designed for swimming and everyday water exposure within that rating.

It can create intervals on the watch, provide recovery and workout-benefit information, run adaptive Garmin Coach plans, and record cycling power when paired with a compatible power meter or indoor bike. Buyers seeking a particular advanced training metric should check Garmin’s current feature tables for that activity instead of assuming every feature from higher-end devices is included.

Garmin introduced Venu 3 on August 30, 2023, with a suggested U.S. retail price of $449.99. That is launch-era pricing, not a current quote; local prices, colors, stock, taxes, and promotions can differ, so check current listings before ordering.

Venu 3 specifications at a glance
| Specification | Garmin Venu 3 | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Case dimensions | 45 × 45 × 12 mm | Measure your wrist and consider how a 45 mm case will look and feel during sleep and exercise. |
| Specified wrist circumference | 135–200 mm | Use the exact model’s fit range; do not substitute the Venu 3S range. |
| Display | 1.4-inch, 454 × 454-pixel color AMOLED touchscreen; always-on mode available | Always-on mode materially changes endurance. |
| Lens and case | Corning Gorilla Glass 3 lens, stainless-steel bezel, fiber-reinforced polymer case | These materials balance weight and durability; a screen protector remains an optional precaution. |
| Strap | Silicone strap; 22 mm Quick Release band interface | Replacement bands must explicitly fit Venu 3 and use the correct 22 mm connection. |
| Weight | 30 g without band; 47 g with the included band | Band material and size affect the weight you feel on the wrist. |
| Storage | 8 GB | Storage is used for watch software, music, and other content. |
| Water rating | Swim, 5 ATM | Suitable for swimming within the rating; rinse after exposure to salt or chlorine. |
| Charging | Proprietary plug charger | Keep the supplied cable or an exact compatible replacement available. |
| GPS and sensors | GPS/GNSS, heart rate, respiration, stress, Pulse Ox, and HRV-related sleep information | Pulse Ox availability varies by country, and wellness readings are not medical diagnoses. |

The main reason to consider Venu 3S is its smaller physical format. Garmin announced both sizes, but the documented Venu 3 figures are the 45 mm case and 135–200 mm wrist range shown above. Because case dimensions, wrist ranges, display size, battery, and band width can differ on the smaller model, verify those values on Garmin’s current comparison page before purchase.
Measure your wrist accurately
- Wrap a flexible tape measure around the wrist where you normally wear a watch, keeping it snug but not tight.
- Record the circumference in millimeters. If you use string, mark the overlap and measure the string against a ruler.
- Compare the result with the exact model’s published wrist range.
- Think about case diameter as well as circumference. A watch can technically fit the range yet still feel visually large, press into the hand during push-ups, or catch on clothing.
- If you sleep in the watch, leave enough room for normal wrist swelling and a comfortable overnight strap setting.
Check the band before ordering replacements
Venu 3 uses 22 mm Quick Release bands. A band advertised only as “Garmin compatible” is not enough: confirm the 22 mm width, Quick Release mechanism, and explicit Venu 3 fit. Do not presume that a Venu 3S replacement band uses the same width. A poorly matched band can sit loosely, bind the sensor against the skin, or release during exercise.
Display and everyday hardware
The 1.4-inch AMOLED panel has 454 × 454 pixels and supports an optional always-on mode. AMOLED gives the watch high-contrast graphics for notifications, workouts, and health cards, while the always-on setting keeps basic information visible at the cost of substantially shorter battery life. If you prefer maximum endurance, leave always-on disabled and wake the screen with a wrist gesture or button.

The stainless-steel bezel and Gorilla Glass 3 lens provide a conventional watch-like construction, while the fiber-reinforced polymer case and silicone strap keep the listed weight to 47 g with the band. The 5 ATM swim rating is a water-resistance classification, not a promise that every button, speaker, or microphone will perform normally immediately after submersion. Rinse the watch with fresh water after pool or seawater use and follow Garmin’s care guidance.
Health, sleep, and wellness features
Sleep and recovery
Venu 3 records a sleep score and presents sleep insights, sleep coaching, nap detection, and a morning report. Body Battery combines available activity, stress, sleep, and heart-rate information into an energy-style indicator intended to help you plan exertion and rest. The watch also reports recovery time and workout benefit after supported activities.
These features are useful for spotting patterns—such as consistently short sleep after late training—but they are estimates generated from sensor data. They should not be used to diagnose a condition or replace professional medical advice.
Health sensors and interpretation
The platform includes wrist heart-rate tracking, respiration information, stress measurements, Pulse Ox, and HRV-related sleep information. Pulse Ox availability can vary by country. Fit, skin contact, movement, tattoos, temperature, and exercise intensity can affect readings; a loose strap or a watch worn over clothing can produce poor data.
Wheelchair support
Wheelchair mode adds wheelchair push tracking and wheelchair-specific workouts. Garmin also announced guided meditation, perceived-exertion recording, and other recovery-oriented tools. Incident detection is unavailable when the watch is in wheelchair mode, so users who rely on safety notifications should account for that limitation.

Fitness and training functions
Garmin lists more than 30 sports apps, covering common activities such as running, cycling, swimming, strength work, and other workouts. The watch can display animated strength, HIIT, Pilates, and yoga sessions, and Garmin Connect offers more than 1,600 exercises that can be assembled into workouts.

Running, cycling, and structured workouts
- Intervals: Create running or cycling intervals directly on the watch rather than relying on a phone during a session.
- Garmin Coach: Adaptive plans can adjust to a goal and your recorded progress.
- Cycling power: Power data requires a compatible power meter or indoor bike; the watch does not create power data by itself.
- Workout feedback: Workout benefit, perceived exertion, and recovery time help explain how a session affected your current load.
Before buying for a specific sport, list the metrics you actually need—such as cycling power, pool intervals, navigation, or advanced running dynamics—and confirm each one in Garmin’s current tables. “More than 30 sports apps” indicates breadth, not identical depth in every activity.
Battery life: read every estimate with its mode
Garmin’s figures are maximum estimates under defined modes. Display behavior, GPS frequency, sensor settings, notifications, temperature, music playback, and workout duration can all reduce real-world endurance.
| Mode | Published maximum | What changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Smartwatch mode | Up to 14 days | Notifications, sensors, screen wake behavior, and other daily use. |
| Smartwatch mode with always-on display | Up to 5 days | The display remains active, so endurance is substantially lower. |
| Battery Saver smartwatch mode | Up to 26 days | Power-saving restrictions reduce some functions and screen activity. |
| GPS-only GNSS | Up to 26 hours | GPS recording interval, screen use, sensor settings, and temperature. |
| All-systems GNSS | Up to 20 hours | Additional satellite systems improve positioning options while using more power. |
| All-systems GNSS with music | Up to 11 hours | Satellite tracking and Bluetooth audio run together. |
Plan from your heaviest routine, not the 14-day headline. A runner who records several long all-systems GPS sessions and listens to downloaded music will charge much more often than someone using basic notifications and sleep tracking. If always-on display is essential, use the five-day estimate as the more relevant starting point.
Phone compatibility, calls, and messages
Venu 3 is not an independent cellular phone. Calls and voice-assistant actions require a compatible smartphone paired over Bluetooth. Keep the phone nearby and connected when you need those functions.
Android-specific messaging functions
Garmin’s launch material says Android users can view photo messages and reply from the watch keyboard. The owner’s manual specifies that customized text replies are available only on Android. If you use an iPhone, verify which notification actions are available for your model and operating-system version instead of assuming the Android workflow applies.
What to verify before purchase
- Check Garmin’s current phone-compatibility requirements for your phone model and operating-system version.
- Confirm Bluetooth permissions, notification access, and microphone permissions during setup.
- Test whether your preferred messaging app exposes the reply actions you need.
- Remember that the watch’s speaker and microphone route calls through the paired phone; they do not replace a cellular plan in the watch.
Music storage and playback
The 8 GB watch can hold downloaded music from supported services or personal audio transferred to the device. Garmin’s announcement names Spotify, Amazon Music, and Deezer; subscriptions are required for those services. Support and account requirements can change, so confirm the current provider list in your region.

Bluetooth headphones pair directly with the watch for phone-free listening during a workout. Download playlists while the watch is on Wi-Fi or otherwise connected as required by the service, then test playback before leaving your phone behind. Streaming from a phone and playing downloaded watch content are different use cases: the former keeps the phone involved, while the latter consumes watch storage and battery.

Garmin Pay is listed as a Venu 3 feature, but it depends on participating financial institutions and regional availability. A compatible card in one country does not guarantee support after moving to another country, and a bank may support some card products but not others.
- Open Garmin’s current Garmin Pay support information for your country.
- Search for your bank and the exact card network or product you intend to use.
- Confirm any bank enrollment, verification, and transaction limits.
- Set up the wallet in Garmin Connect before relying on it for travel or workouts.
- Carry a backup payment method until you have completed a successful in-store transaction.
Safety and incident detection are phone-assisted
Safety and tracking features are not an independent emergency service. Garmin’s owner’s manual requires the watch to be connected to Garmin Connect over Bluetooth, the paired phone to have an active data plan, and usable network coverage. Incident detection applies only to certain outdoor activities and is unavailable in wheelchair mode.
That means the watch cannot reliably contact emergency services when it is away from the phone, the phone has no data, Bluetooth is disconnected, or the activity is outside the supported list. Treat these tools as an additional notification path, not a replacement for local emergency planning, a phone, or a personal locator.
What to check before you buy: a practical sequence
1. Confirm the physical fit
Measure your wrist, compare it with the exact model’s range, and decide whether the 45 mm Venu 3 case is comfortable for sleep and exercise. If it feels too large, investigate Venu 3S using its live dimensions rather than relying on assumptions.
2. Match the watch to your phone
Write down the functions you expect—calls, voice assistant, photo messages, custom replies, and notifications. Check each one against your phone platform, because Android has messaging capabilities that the manual does not extend to iPhone.
Best Value
- Physical size - 45 x 45 x 12 mm - Fits wrists with a circumference of 135-200 mm
3. Budget for your actual charging pattern
Choose whether you can live without always-on display, how many GPS hours you record each week, and whether you listen to music from the watch. Compare that routine with the 5-day always-on, 26-hour GPS-only, 20-hour all-systems, and 11-hour all-systems-with-music estimates.
4. Verify payments locally
Check Garmin Pay support for your country, bank, and card before treating the watch as a wallet. Availability is controlled by participating institutions, not by the watch alone.
5. Test your safety assumptions
Ensure Garmin Connect is installed, Bluetooth remains enabled, your phone has a data plan, and your normal outdoor activities fall within incident-detection support. Decide what you will do when the phone is left behind.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →6. Check accessories and stock
For replacement straps, confirm 22 mm Quick Release compatibility with Venu 3. Separately verify current price, color, regional specification, warranty terms, and stock; the $449.99 launch price from 2023 is not a current guarantee.
Who should buy Venu 3?
- Buy it if you want a bright AMOLED smartwatch with substantial sleep and wellness analysis, built-in GPS, broad recreational workout support, music storage, and phone-assisted calls.
- Choose the smaller model if the 45 mm case overwhelms your wrist or you prefer a less prominent watch, after checking the Venu 3S’s current dimensions and battery figures.
- Look beyond this series if your primary requirement is a specific advanced training metric that is not confirmed in the Venu 3 feature table, independent cellular emergency communication, or a bank/payment service unavailable in your country.
Venu 3 makes the most sense when its convenience features and wellness tools matter as much as exercise recording. The right size, phone pairing, charging expectations, local payment support, and safety prerequisites determine whether those headline features work in your daily life.
