It offers dedicated pool and open-water profiles, a wide set of swim metrics and wrist-based heart-rate tracking. That specialization is its main advantage—and its main trade-off: swimmers who also want deep running, cycling or smartwatch features may prefer a broader sports watch.
Historical reviews found the Swim 2 capable, but not flawless. Pool-lap counting and automatic rest detection varied in reviewers’ tests, and wrist heart rate is best treated as a training guide rather than a definitive measurement. Those findings come from reviews published years ago, not a guarantee of how every unit or current firmware will perform.

What the Garmin Swim 2 is designed to do
Garmin positions the Swim 2 as a swim-first watch. It has separate pool and open-water activity profiles, plus basic run, bike, cardio and everyday tracking features. TechRadar’s 2020 review considered it most compelling for people whose primary activity is swimming, rather than athletes looking for a fully featured multisport watch.
Garmin lists pool metrics including lengths, distance, pace, stroke count and type, and SWOLF, along with drill logging, rest features, alerts and downloadable pool workouts. For open-water swims, it lists distance, pace, stroke count and rate, stroke distance and SWOLF. The watch supports GPS, GLONASS and Galileo; Garmin Connect is used to review activities and create or share workouts. Garmin’s product specifications describe the feature set.

Pool and open-water tracking are different
Pool swims
Pool distance depends on the watch recognizing turns and registering lengths. Set the pool length to match the facility before starting; if the watch is configured for the wrong length, its distance estimate will not match the swim. Turns and stroke patterns that the watch fails to recognize can also affect the count.
Independent results were mixed rather than uniformly positive or negative. In a review published January 20, 2020, TechRadar’s Hugh Langley observed that the watch could overcount by a lap or two over longer swims in the reviewer’s testing. By contrast, 220 Triathlon reported accurate test swims in 20 m and 25 m pools; the reviewer set the 20 m pool length manually. These are individual review observations, not a representative accuracy study, so they do not establish a result every swimmer should expect.

Open-water swims
In open water, the Swim 2 uses satellite positioning to estimate distance and pace rather than counting pool lengths. Its GPS, GLONASS and Galileo support gives it a dedicated outdoor swim mode. TechRadar praised its open-water GPS in its 2020 review, but that historical assessment is not a promise of exact distance in every swim or environment.

How useful is its heart-rate tracking?
Garmin advertises wrist-based heart-rate tracking underwater. It is convenient for seeing a general training signal without adding another sensor, but the available independent comparisons do not establish medical-grade or definitive accuracy.

TechRadar compared the Swim 2’s optical reading with a Polar OH1 and found the Garmin reading somewhat lower. The reviewer cautioned that comparing one optical sensor with another is not a perfect test. Wareable likewise described heart rate as useful guidance while warning that underwater measurement remains problematic. Treat the figure as context for a session, not as an unquestionable reading. TechRadar’s review and Wareable’s review summarize those observations.
Automatic rest detection and interval control
The pool profile includes rest features, but automatic detection may not match every swimmer’s interval pattern. In TechRadar’s January 2020 testing, auto-rest could lag and register a rest after a shorter pause than the reviewer expected. If exact interval boundaries matter, use the watch’s lap controls rather than relying solely on automatic detection.

Battery life depends on the activity mode
Garmin’s published estimates differ by regional product page. They are maximum estimates, and Garmin’s manual notes that enabled features and environmental factors affect actual runtime.
| Mode | Garmin GB page | Garmin Singapore page |
|---|---|---|
| Smartwatch | Up to 7 days | Up to 7 days |
| GPS plus optical heart rate | Up to 13 hours | Up to 12 hours |
| Pool plus optical heart rate | Up to 72 hours | Up to 2.5 days |

Size, display and water rating
Garmin lists a 42 × 42 × 11.4 mm case, a 36 g weight and a 1.04-inch transflective MIP display with 208 × 208 pixel resolution. The watch has a 5 ATM water rating. Garmin’s manual describes that rating as pressure equivalent to a depth of 50 m; it should not be read as a claim that the watch is suitable for scuba diving.
The included band fits wrists with a 129–197 mm circumference. Garmin lists a larger replacement band as an optional accessory for 151–219 mm wrists. Charging uses Garmin’s proprietary plug charger, and a charging cable is included. Garmin lists 50 hours of activity history. These specifications are on Garmin’s product page and in its owner’s manual.
Who should consider the Garmin Swim 2?
- A good fit: Swimmers who want dedicated pool and open-water profiles, swim-specific data and a light watch focused on training in the water.
- Think carefully: Swimmers who need pool intervals counted precisely should verify that the pool length is configured correctly and decide whether manual lap control suits their routine.
- Compare broader sports watches: Athletes who prioritize advanced running or cycling tools, training features beyond swimming or extensive smartwatch functions may get more value from a multisport model. TechRadar’s review questioned the Swim 2’s appeal against broader Garmin sports watches for those buyers.
- Check before buying: Current price and availability were not established here. Confirm local stock, whether a listing is new or used, seller, firmware and support status, and compatibility of any replacement band or cable before purchase.
Verdict
The Garmin Swim 2 makes most sense when swimming is the priority. Its dedicated pool and open-water tools, broad swim metrics and low weight serve that purpose well on paper, while historical reviews show that pool counting and auto-rest behavior can vary. Its wrist heart-rate reading is useful as a guide, not a definitive measurement. Choose a broader sports watch if swimming is only one part of a training routine and you want deeper features across other sports.
