Garmin describes the Forerunner 70 as an easy-to-use GPS running smartwatch for people starting or developing their running. Its basic running records include GPS, time, distance and pace, alongside wrist-based heart rate. Those features can help a new runner track sessions without needing a separate chest strap or manually logging every run, though no particular accuracy or training outcome is established.
#1 Best Overall
- Easy-to-use lightweight running smartwatch with built-in GPS for accurate pace and distance along with wrist-based heart rate; brilliant AMOLED touchscreen display features button controls
- Up to 13 days of battery life in smartwatch mode and up to 23 hours in GPS mode for a more complete picture of your health, day and night
- Train for an event, achieve a milestone, or improve your fitness with personalized Garmin Coach training plans that adapt based on your performance and recovery; these include beginner-friendly plans with run/walk workouts all the way up to higher-volume and higher-intensity plans for experienced runners
- Get personalized daily suggested workouts adapted to match performance and recovery
- Understand your recovery with sleep score, sleep stages and detailed insights to help improve sleep; plus, track your energy levels based on sleep, naps, activities and stress to know when you’re ready to move or when it’s time to rest (device data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
The training toolkit goes beyond recording a run: Garmin lists adaptive Garmin Coach plans, daily suggested workouts, recovery time, HRV status, training readiness and training status. It also specifies wrist-based running power and running dynamics, plus more than 80 built-in sports apps. These are product functions, not proof that every beginner needs them or that they will improve a runner’s performance. Garmin’s “everything a runner needs” language is promotional positioning, not an objective checklist for all runners.
Garmin’s announcement of 12 May 2026 also lists sleep tracking and Sleep Coach among the watch’s health features. Garmin’s announcement attributes its beginner-runner positioning to Susan Lyman, Garmin Vice President of Consumer Sales and Marketing.

How long does the battery last?
“Nearly two weeks” refers to Garmin’s up to 13 days in smartwatch mode, not two weeks of GPS workout recording. Garmin’s product comparison lists these maximum estimates by mode; actual battery life can vary with use:

| Operating mode | Garmin’s stated battery estimate |
|---|---|
| Smartwatch mode | Up to 13 days |
| Smartwatch mode, display always on | Up to 5 days |
| Battery Saver smartwatch mode | Up to 28 days |
| GPS-only GNSS | Up to 23 hours |
| All-Systems GNSS | Up to 16 hours |
These are Garmin estimates listed on its product comparison page, not independent test results. The shorter GPS-mode figures are the more relevant ones for judging how often you might need to recharge if you record frequent or long runs.

What else should a buyer consider?
Garmin’s comparison lists a 1.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen, a 40 g weight and a 5 ATM water rating. It specifies a 20 mm industry-standard quick-release band and a Garmin proprietary plug charger. The band specification may help when considering replacements, but check compatibility before ordering an accessory; the charger is proprietary, so do not assume a generic plug or cable will fit.
The Forerunner 70 may suit a beginner who wants GPS run tracking alongside coaching and recovery metrics in one watch. If your needs are simpler, those extra tools may not matter as much as comfort, display preference, battery use during GPS workouts and the price available when you buy. The deal makes the watch worth checking at the reported price, but it does not make it a necessity for every new runner.
