The Garmin Approach S72 is the more capable watch on paper, adding swing metrics, post-round biometric review, range tracking, and newer everyday-watch hardware. Choose it if you expect to use those tools and its membership-dependent putting features. The Approach S70 remains a strong choice if its established golf essentials are enough and you can find it for substantially less. The S72 was announced on October 6, 2026; this comparison is based on published specifications, not independent testing of the new model.

What changes between the S72 and S70?

Both watches target golfers who want course information and smartwatch functions on their wrist. The S70 already offers course mapping, virtual caddie, PlaysLike distance, scorekeeping, and green view. The S72 retains that premium-golf positioning while adding more ways to examine practice and round data.

Swing analysis and practice

Garmin says the S72 can display hand speed, backswing length, wrist rotation, and other swing metrics during range practice and after a round. It also adds a driving-range activity. These features make the S72 more relevant to golfers who want structured feedback between rounds, rather than only distances and scorekeeping on the course.

Post-round biometrics

The S72 supports a post-round review that lets golfers examine how heart rate relates to performance. This is a data-review feature, not evidence that the watch improves scores or that its measurements have been independently shown to be more accurate than the S70.

#1 Best Overall
Garmin Approach® S72, Advanced Golf Smartwatch, 47mm, Black
  • Premium golf smartwatch features a lightweight titanium bezel, durable sapphire lens, ComfortFit fabric band, built-in flashlight, speaker and microphone
  • Preloaded with 43,000+ full-color CourseView maps; option to get an enhanced view of the shot ahead with aerial imagery (requires a Garmin Golf membership)
  • Up to 16 days in smartwatch mode and 20 hours of battery life in golf activity mode, so you can play round after round
  • Look back on your round to see how heart rate affected your performance and start to see trends in how your biometric data and score relate (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
  • Gain a better understanding of your swing during your range session and after your round with swing metrics, which include hand speed, backswing length, wrist rotation and more

Green reading and putting analysis

Garmin describes green-reading capabilities using contour data, as well as aerial imagery and putting analysis. Availability is conditional: Garmin ties these capabilities to an active Garmin Golf membership and, for green contour information, select courses. Check current membership terms and course coverage in your region before treating these as guaranteed benefits. The S70 already has green and slope-related features, some of which also have membership or select-course conditions, so the practical difference depends on what is available where you play.

Materials and everyday hardware

The S72 has a titanium bezel, sapphire lens, ComfortFit fabric band, built-in flashlight, and speaker and microphone for calls when paired with a smartphone. The cited S70 listing specifies a ceramic bezel and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 lens. Those are specification differences, not proof that one watch will be more durable in real-world use. The S72 also adds voice controls and paired-phone calling as everyday smartwatch features.

Rank #2

How do size, battery, and price compare?

Specification Approach S72 Approach S70 What to keep in mind
Case sizes 43 mm and 47 mm (Garmin, 2026) 42 mm and 47 mm (Garmin product information) The smaller models differ by 1 mm; compare the exact size and band rather than assuming they fit identically.
Weight 41 g / 48 g (Endurance Wire, October 2026) 44 g / 56 g (Endurance Wire, October 2026) These are secondary comparison figures. Confirm the exact SKU and included band with the local listing.
Battery estimate For the larger model, Garmin’s U.S. launch announcement estimates up to 20 hours on-course and up to 16 days with GPS off. A Singapore product page displays a different smartwatch-mode figure. For the 47 mm model, Garmin lists up to 20 hours in GPS mode and up to 16 days in smartwatch mode. These are manufacturer estimates, not measured results. Modes and regional listings differ, so compare the same size and operating mode.
U.S. price information Starting suggested retail price: $799.99 at announcement (Garmin, 2026). $549 reported as the historical launch price by Endurance Wire (2026); current price not stated. The S72 figure is a launch MSRP, not a live retailer price. Check current local S70 pricing before deciding on value.
Memory Four times the S70’s memory, according to TechRadar (2026). Comparison figure reported by TechRadar (2026). This is a secondary report, not a specification listed in Garmin’s cited S72 announcement.

Garmin’s regional S72 product page lists more than 43,000 preloaded golf courses, but that figure should not be read as a guarantee of local course coverage. Confirm the courses you use are supported in your market.

Which watch should you choose?

Choose the S72 if you will use its new analysis tools

  • You regularly practice at a range and want swing metrics such as hand speed, backswing length, and wrist rotation.
  • You want to review heart-rate information alongside round performance.
  • You value the newer materials, flashlight, voice controls, or calls through a paired smartphone.
  • Your courses and membership support the green-reading and putting features you expect to use.

Its higher U.S. starting suggested retail price makes those additions worth paying for only if they match your habits. Garmin announced the S72 at $799.99 starting MSRP in the United States; check local listings for current availability and pricing.

Rank #3
Garmin Approach® S50, Golf GPS Smartwatch, 43mm, Black
  • Stunning 1.2” color AMOLED display brings 43,000+ preloaded courses to life on your wrist
  • Be comfortable on and off the course with the lightweight ComfortFit nylon strap
  • Battery life: up to 10 days in smartwatch mode and up to 15 hours in GPS mode
  • Get distance to the front, middle and back of the green and navigate bunkers, water hazards and layups with hazard view
  • Playslike Distance feature tells you how far each shot truly is, with adjusted yardage for elevation changes

Choose the S70 if its golf fundamentals meet your needs

  • You mainly want course mapping, virtual caddie, PlaysLike distance, scorekeeping, and green view.
  • You do not expect to use swing analysis or post-round biometric review.
  • You find the S70 at a meaningfully lower current price than the S72.

The S70’s $549 figure is its historical launch price as reported by Endurance Wire, not a current price. Its value depends on what retailers charge in your region now.

If you already own an S70

Consider upgrading if range feedback, post-round biometrics, or the S72’s everyday hardware would change how you practice or use a watch. If your S70 already covers your on-course needs, the published feature list alone does not establish that an upgrade will improve your scores, accuracy, or comfort.

What is known—and not yet proven—about the S72?

The S72 was newly announced on October 6, 2026. TechRadar’s launch coverage said it had not tested the watch, so the available comparison supports a feature-based buying decision, not a claim that the S72 performs better in use. Battery figures are manufacturer estimates, and the listed materials do not establish comparative durability. No cited source reports an independent study showing either watch improves golfers’ scores.

Garmin’s U.S. announcement describes the S72 as its next generation of golf technology. That is the manufacturer’s positioning; the practical case for upgrading depends on whether its added features are useful and available to you.
