There is no universal cost winner between leaving a gaming PC on and renting a VPS for a 24/7 YouTube stream. Measure the PC’s average wall power while it is doing the actual streaming work, then compare its marginal electricity cost with the VPS’s full recurring cost—including enough compute for the encoder and enough outbound data for the bitrate.
Compare the same stream, not an idle PC with a VPS bill
“Idle power” is a useful baseline, but a PC encoding and sending a continuous stream is not necessarily idle. The relevant home figure is the average power drawn at the wall during the intended stream workload. Include the display and peripherals only if they will remain on, and handle them consistently in every measurement.

There is no established universal wattage for a modern gaming PC at idle or while encoding a YouTube stream. Hardware and workload matter: a 2019 Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory study measured 26 gaming systems and found energy use varied with both the systems and the games or benchmarks used (LBNL publication). A 2020 European Commission Joint Research Centre report gives a mixed-use profile of 1,394 kWh per year for an average gaming computer plus display, but that modeled profile includes gaming, browsing, video streaming, idle, sleep and off periods. It is not a 24/7 encoding test or an individual PC estimate (JRC technical report).
Calculate your PC’s monthly electricity cost
1. Measure average wall power during the stream
Use a plug-in electricity usage monitor (watt meter) to measure the complete setup that will stay on. Run the intended encoder, resolution and frame rate, and record average watts over a representative period. PSU capacity, a GPU’s rated power, or a brief idle reading does not tell you the setup’s actual average draw. The JRC report describes computer energy as a mix of activity and low-power modes, reinforcing why the measurement should match your use.

- Simplistic Design: Enjoy the latest generation of Windows 11 Home for your everyday needs. *MSI recommends Windows 11 Pro for business use.
- Cool While Gaming: In conjunction with an ARGB fan Air Cooler, the Codex R2 features four system cooling fans; three in the front and one in the rear to pull in cool air and push heat out of the PC.
- Turn on the Bright Lights: With the built-in RGB lighting, take your gaming experience to the next level by pressing the MSI LED button to cycle through lighting options. Customize lighting even further with MSI Center software.
2. Apply your marginal electricity rate
Use this calculation:
Average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours powered × marginal electricity price per kWh = variable energy cost
For a 30-day month, use 720 hours; for an average 365-day year, use 8,760 hours. Use the rate that applies to the extra electricity on your own bill. Fixed utility charges generally are not avoided by turning off one computer. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Electric Power Monthly provides official U.S. electricity data, but a published average is not a substitute for your tariff; its July 2026 issue was released September 24, 2026.

Estimate the VPS transfer requirement
A VPS’s advertised compute price is only part of the comparison. A continuous stream sends a large amount of data, so check the provider’s included transfer, how it defines and counts egress, any protocol overhead allowance, and overage charges. YouTube automatically transcodes incoming live streams for viewers, but that does not remove your need to send the incoming feed from a reliable connection.

Mbps × 1,000,000 ÷ 8 × seconds ÷ 1,000,000,000 = decimal GB before protocol overhead
| Continuous bitrate | Estimated transfer over 30 days | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| 5 Mbps | About 1,620 GB (1.62 TB) | Arithmetic using 30 × 24 × 60 × 60 seconds; before protocol overhead |
| 10 Mbps | About 3,240 GB (3.24 TB) | Arithmetic using 30 × 24 × 60 × 60 seconds; before protocol overhead |
Use your actual target bitrate rather than assuming every YouTube stream uses the same amount. YouTube’s official encoder guidance recommends 10 Mbps H.264 for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps H.264 for 1080p60; its recommended H.264 rate for 4K60 is 50 Mbps. Recommended rates vary by codec and output settings. Confirm the current YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for your chosen format. A bundle described as including 1 TB would not cover even the 5 Mbps example for a 30-day month, before overhead; verify current provider terms rather than relying on a secondary plan comparison.

What a fair VPS comparison includes
- Compute: Confirm the CPU or GPU and encoder can sustain your intended codec, resolution and frame rate. A plan that can send bytes is not necessarily powerful enough to encode reliably.
- Transfer: Compare the bitrate-derived monthly total with included traffic, egress rules and overage pricing.
- Other recurring charges: Add any required compute upgrades, storage and operational services.
- Equivalent output: Compare the same stream target and time period on both options.
- Operational effort: Account for maintaining power, internet, hardware and recovery access at home versus operating and troubleshooting a VPS. The figures here do not establish a reliability winner.
YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 encoder options. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate encoding, choosing a quality your connection can reliably support, testing upload bitrate and testing before going live. For a VPS, assess those encoder and network requirements alongside compute and transfer charges—not just the monthly headline price.
