There is no single best gaming monitor size: the right choice depends on how close you sit, what you play, your desk space, the resolution you want, and whether your graphics card can sustain your target frame rate. For a close-seated competitive setup, 24 inches is a practical starting point; 27 inches is a flexible middle ground; 32 inches favors immersion. Ultrawide is a separate format choice, not just another diagonal size.
What is the best monitor size for gaming?
For many desk setups, the useful comparison starts with 24, 27, and 32 inches. Extron’s 2024 esports design guide identifies those as common gaming-monitor sizes in its esports context and describes 24 inches as the most common there, citing viewability and the need to keep a player’s eyes on target. That is context-specific guidance, not a ranking of what every gamer should buy.

ASUS’s size guidance pairs 24-inch displays with 1080p competitive play, 27-inch models with 1440p or 4K mixed use, and 32-inch models with 4K immersive gaming. Those pairings are starting points, not rules. A large screen may be uncomfortable at close range, while a high resolution can demand more from a GPU. The five options below are conditional setups, not measured universal winners.

| Setup | Good fit for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 24-inch, 1080p | Close-seated competitive play and compact desks | Less screen area and detail than larger, higher-resolution options |
| 27-inch, 1440p | A balance of competitive play, mixed genres, and everyday use | Needs more GPU power than 1080p at the same settings and frame rate |
| 27-inch, 4K | Detail-focused play when the system and interface scaling suit the user | High rendering workload; the reviewed guidance does not establish this as a universal gaming recommendation |
| 32-inch, 4K | Immersive single-player games and a larger viewing area | Requires desk space, suitable viewing distance, and capable graphics hardware |
| Ultrawide | Players who value a wider field of view in games that support the format | Aspect ratio and game compatibility matter; diagonal size alone does not describe the experience |
1. Compact competitive setup: 24-inch, 1080p
A 24-inch screen is a sensible choice when you sit close, play games that reward rapid scanning, or want the whole display within a compact field of view. ASUS associates this size and resolution with competitive esports. A 1080p target is also less demanding to render than higher resolutions, which can help a system maintain a high frame rate, though results depend on the GPU, game, and settings.

2. Flexible setup: 27-inch, 1440p
For a larger image without moving to a very large panel, 27 inches with 1440p is a common middle-ground pairing in manufacturer guidance. It offers more screen space and detail than 24-inch 1080p, while remaining suitable for varied game types. Check the viewing distance and graphics performance rather than assuming every PC can maintain its desired frame rate at this resolution.
3. Detail-focused setup: 27-inch, 4K
A 27-inch 4K display can suit someone who prioritizes fine detail and has hardware for the rendering load. This is a plausible size-and-resolution combination, but the reviewed guidance does not identify it as a universal gaming pick. Consider interface scaling as well as in-game performance: a high pixel count on a relatively compact panel can make desktop elements appear small at default scaling.

- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
4. Immersive setup: 32-inch, 4K
A 32-inch 4K display gives games a larger image and is the pairing ASUS identifies for immersive play. It is most practical when the desk provides enough depth to sit comfortably and the GPU can handle the chosen settings and frame rate. If you sit close, the screen may require more eye movement to scan; if you sit farther away, its size may be easier to take in.

Ultrawide describes a wider aspect ratio, not a single diagonal size or resolution. ASUS includes ultrawide as a gaming option, but the value depends on whether the games you play support the format and how they display menus and gameplay. Check the panel’s aspect ratio and native resolution, then confirm support in the games that matter to you. A wider image can increase the GPU workload compared with a narrower display at a similar vertical resolution.

How size, resolution, and pixel density work together
Diagonal inches tell you how large a screen is, but not how sharp it will look. Pixel density, measured in pixels per inch (PPI), depends on both the panel’s pixel count and its physical dimensions. At the same resolution, spreading pixels over a larger screen lowers pixel density.
Samsung Australia gives approximate examples of 91 PPI for a 24-inch 1080p monitor and 68 PPI for a 32-inch 1080p monitor; its page does not state a publication year. The lower density on the larger screen helps explain why 1080p can look less crisp at 32 inches than at 24 inches when viewed from a similar distance. Moving to a higher resolution can restore detail, but it raises the graphics workload.

Intel’s gaming-monitor guidance also treats pixel density and viewing distance as related to perceived sharpness. Resolution labels alone do not tell you how detailed a screen will appear from your seat: consider the panel size and how far away you will sit.

What screen size and aspect ratios are best for gaming monitors?
Use the game and seating position to narrow the choice. Fast competitive games often make it useful to scan the whole screen quickly, which is one reason a compact 24-inch setup can work well. A larger panel may be more appealing for games built around scenery and immersion. Ultrawide changes the horizontal view and should be assessed separately from standard widescreen sizes.

Viewing-distance suggestions are illustrative rather than universal ergonomic standards. HP recommends 24–27 inches for close seating; LG gives examples of 24 inches at less than 3 feet and 27 inches at 3–4 feet. Your comfort, eyesight, game, and desk arrangement can change what feels right, so treat those figures as starting points rather than fixed rules.

Measure the viewing position
- Measure the usable desk width and depth, including room for the stand, keyboard, and other equipment.
- Estimate your normal eye-to-screen distance while sitting in your usual gaming position.
- Consider whether the full panel fits comfortably in your field of view, particularly for fast games.
Match resolution to performance
More pixels require more GPU work. Extron’s esports design guide discusses resolution, frame rate, and GPU capability as linked design considerations. Before choosing a high-resolution panel, check whether your graphics card can deliver the frame rate you want in your actual games at the settings you plan to use. A screen’s native resolution does not guarantee that a PC can render demanding games at that resolution and a high frame rate.
Decide what matters most
- Choose a compact size if close seating and quick whole-screen scanning matter most.
- Consider 27 inches if you want a balance between screen area and a manageable desk setup.
- Choose a larger or ultrawide format when immersion or extra horizontal space matters and your room, games, and GPU support it.
- Compare native resolution and pixel density alongside diagonal size rather than treating inches as a measure of sharpness.
Do bigger monitors improve gaming performance?
Not reliably for every player or game. A 2023 arXiv paper, Toward Understanding Display Size for FPS Esports Aiming, reports a small statistically significant improvement in its FPS aiming study with larger display sizes. The abstract notes a result likely combining size, resolution, and natural viewing distance; it does not establish that bigger screens improve play across games or players. Use the finding as a limited study result, not as a reason to buy a larger monitor by default.
Make the choice by fit, not by a universal ranking
Start with your seating distance and game style, then decide how much desk space you can give the panel. Pair the size with a resolution that looks sharp at that distance, and check that your GPU can sustain the frame rate you want. For many close-seated competitive setups, 24-inch 1080p is a practical option; 27-inch 1440p is a flexible alternative; 32-inch 4K suits a roomier, immersion-focused setup. Ultrawide is worth considering when your games support its aspect ratio.
