Choose a gaming monitor by matching its resolution and refresh rate to the frame rates your system can deliver, then check measured pixel transitions, overshoot, variable refresh rate (VRR) support, and—if HDR matters—the exact VESA DisplayHDR certification. A “1 ms” label alone cannot tell you how the display performs across different transitions or settings.

How should you compare gaming monitors?

Start with the games and hardware you actually use. A high refresh-rate panel is most useful when your system can produce frame rates that take advantage of it at the resolution you want. Then compare motion measurements, VRR operation, image quality, ports, ergonomics, and price—not a single headline specification.

What to compare What to check
Resolution and screen size Whether the combination suits your viewing distance and the frame rates your GPU can deliver in your games.
Refresh rate The maximum rate available at your chosen resolution and connection, plus the rates you can realistically reach.
Pixel transitions Measured gray-to-gray behavior and overshoot at both the refresh rates and settings you expect to use.
VRR The supported refresh-rate range, relevant GPU validation, required input, and low-framerate compensation (LFC) where relevant.
Image and fit Panel and image priorities, HDR certification if applicable, ports, stand adjustments, mounting, and price.

What does a monitor’s refresh rate tell you?

Refresh rate, expressed in hertz (Hz), is how many times per second a display can update. It is different from pixel response time, which describes how quickly a pixel changes color. A higher refresh rate shortens the time available for each refresh, but does not by itself guarantee clean pixel transitions or low total input latency. Intel’s gaming monitor guide explains the distinction between these specifications.

For scale, 144 Hz corresponds to a refresh interval of about 6.94 milliseconds, while 240 Hz corresponds to about 4.17 milliseconds. These are arithmetic conversions, not measurements of a particular monitor. RTINGS’ refresh-rate compliance methodology measures gray-to-gray transitions at several frame rates and evaluates whether transitions keep up with the refresh target.

When choosing a rate, consider the frame rates your system can deliver in the games you play at your preferred resolution. A monitor’s maximum rate is only one part of the fit; check which rates are available over the connection you intend to use.

Is a “1 ms response time” important?

It can be useful information, but a single advertised figure is incomplete unless you know what was measured and under which conditions. Gray-to-gray (GtG) response time measures selected transitions between shades. Results can vary by transition, refresh rate, and overdrive setting, so a best-case number does not describe every pixel change.

Samsung 27" Odyssey G5 (G51F) Series QHD (1440P) Gaming Monitor | 180Hz, 1ms, AMD FreeSync, HDR10, Height Adj Stand, Black Equalizer, Virtual Aim Point, Auto Source Switch+ (LS27FG512ENXZA)
  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

Overdrive applies extra drive to pixels to speed their transitions. Stronger overdrive may shorten a transition, but too much can make pixels overshoot their target, producing inverse ghosting. Look for independent testing that reports multiple transitions and overshoot at refresh rates and settings you are likely to use. RTINGS describes its response-time tests and explains how to adjust monitor settings.

Do not treat GtG, Moving Picture Response Time (MPRT), and input lag as interchangeable measures. They describe different aspects of display behavior, and there is no universal conversion between GtG and MPRT. A headline “1 ms” claim is not automatically false; it simply needs its measurement type and conditions to be meaningful.

What do FreeSync, G-SYNC, and Adaptive-Sync mean?

Variable refresh rate (VRR) lets a display adjust its refresh timing to follow the frame rate sent by the graphics system within a supported range. This can reduce tearing and stutter, but the result depends on the monitor, GPU, connection, range, and settings. Check the exact model and input rather than assuming every display with a VRR-related label behaves the same way.

AMD FreeSync

AMD offers FreeSync, FreeSync Premium, and FreeSync Premium Pro tiers. AMD lists low latency across its tiers and LFC for Premium and Premium Pro; additional requirements vary by tier and resolution. VESA Adaptive-Sync and AMD FreeSync are related but distinct: Adaptive-Sync is a DisplayPort link feature and standard, while FreeSync is AMD’s technology and certification. Check the display’s supported range and connection in AMD’s FreeSync overview and monitor directory.

NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible

“G-SYNC Compatible” identifies displays NVIDIA has validated for its platform. NVIDIA’s model directory includes details such as variable-refresh ranges and inputs. Use the listing to check the particular monitor; a compatibility label does not establish identical operation across every model, GPU, and port. NVIDIA also explains VRR in its G-SYNC help.

Is “HDR 400” real HDR?

A generic “HDR” or “HDR-400” label does not prove that a display meets VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification. VESA says only displays that meet all specifications may carry its DisplayHDR logo and advises buyers to verify certified products. Check the exact certification tier in VESA’s certified display information rather than inferring certification from similar wording.

VESA’s DisplayHDR CTS 1.2, released May 7, 2024, sets criteria covering luminance, color, bit depth, and rise time. Its listed peak-luminance tiers are 400, 500, 600, 1,000, and 1,400 cd/m². A peak-tier figure is not a guarantee of the same brightness across the full screen or over sustained use; the criteria include separate full-screen flash and sustained luminance requirements. See the DisplayHDR performance criteria for the complete requirements.

What should you check before buying?

  • Confirm the resolution, screen size, and frame rates that suit your games and hardware.
  • Check the maximum refresh rate available at your intended resolution and connection.
  • Look for measured response behavior and overshoot at both high and lower refresh rates you use.
  • Verify the monitor’s VRR range, required input, GPU compatibility, and LFC support if relevant.
  • If HDR matters, verify the VESA DisplayHDR tier and current certification listing.
  • Compare the panel’s image characteristics, ports, stand ergonomics, mounting options, and price.
