Gaming Laptop RAM and SSD Upgrades: What to Check Before You Buy

Whether you can upgrade a gaming laptop’s RAM or SSD—and which parts will fit—depends on its exact model and configuration. Before you buy, check the laptop’s official specifications and model-specific service manual, then confirm the component’s type, capacity, dimensions and supported configuration. A label such as “DDR5” or “M.2” by itself is not enough to establish compatibility.

Start with the exact laptop model

Find the complete model name and submodel, product number or SKU. A laptop family can include different motherboards and regional configurations, so a part listed for one version may not fit another. Crucial likewise notes that laptop memory and storage requirements are specific to each laptop in its compatibility guide.

Use the manufacturer’s specifications and service or hardware-maintenance manual for that exact device as the controlling reference. A compatibility database can help narrow your search, but confirm its result against the laptop documentation before ordering.

What to check before buying RAM

  • Upgradeability: Is the memory removable, soldered, or partly soldered with one accessible slot? Soldered memory cannot be replaced like a plug-in module.
  • Module type: Confirm the DDR generation and physical form factor. SO-DIMM is common in upgradeable laptops, but do not assume your laptop uses it.
  • Slots and current population: Check the number of accessible slots and whether existing modules occupy them. This determines whether you can add memory or must replace a module.
  • Capacity: Verify the manufacturer-supported total and per-module capacities, including any limits that depend on the module combination.
  • Speed and configuration: Check supported memory speed and whether a faster module will run at a lower speed. Confirm whether the laptop calls for matched modules or specific combinations for the desired channel configuration.
  • Platform support: For newer or higher-density modules, check for BIOS requirements. Kingston notes that some first-generation DDR5 systems may need a motherboard-maker BIOS update to support 24Gbit-based modules; this is not a universal requirement. See its gaming memory upgrade guide.

Do not assume a new module will work optimally alongside the existing one. Kingston warns that mixed modules or unsupported combinations can affect compatibility, stability, speed or channel optimization. Follow the laptop manual and the memory configurator’s guidance; use a matched kit if the system’s documentation calls for one.

Example: a model-specific limit

Kingston’s listing for the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro 16IAH7H identifies removable memory, two sockets and a 32 GB maximum, and gives paired-module guidance. It also notes that operating speed can vary by configuration. These are details for that listed model, not specifications for every Legion or gaming laptop. Check the exact Legion 5 Pro listing and your own device’s documentation rather than treating those figures as a general rule.

What to check before buying an SSD

  • Replaceable drive and slot availability: Confirm that the drive is user-replaceable and whether the laptop has an unused second slot. A new SSD may be an addition or a replacement.
  • Protocol: Verify whether the slot supports NVMe/PCIe, SATA, or both. M.2 describes a physical form factor; it does not, by itself, tell you which protocol the laptop supports.
  • Length and clearance: Match the supported M.2 length, such as 2230, 2242 or 2280. Check the manual for thickness, single- or double-sided clearance, heatsink or thermal-pad requirements, and any slot-specific limits.
  • Capacity: Confirm the supported drive capacity for the specific model and slot.
  • Installation plan: If the SSD will replace the boot drive, plan to migrate the drive or reinstall the operating system, and make a separate backup before starting.

The same Legion listing names NVMe M.2 2242 and 2280 drive forms. That illustrates why physical length matters; it does not mean either size will fit another laptop. Check the model-specific listing alongside the laptop’s manual.

Compare compatible parts by fit first

Once you have confirmed compatibility, compare options in this order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Fit and support: Check the exact model, interface, dimensions, supported capacity and permitted configuration.
  2. Capacity for your use: Choose enough RAM for your games and other applications, and enough SSD space for the library and software you intend to keep installed.
  3. Relevant specifications: For RAM, prioritize total capacity and supported population before speed or timings. For an SSD, compare capacity, warranty, endurance specifications and performance relevant to your workloads.
  4. Installation consequences: Decide whether the drive adds capacity or replaces the boot drive, and account for backup, migration and internal clearance.

A higher advertised SSD interface speed does not establish that games will run at a higher frame rate. The manufacturer and compatibility sources cited here establish fit considerations, not a universal performance winner or a reliable FPS uplift. Do not count on a specific frame-rate gain without evidence for the exact laptop, component and workload.

Check the service instructions and warranty terms

Read the exact laptop’s service manual before opening the case. HP’s OMEN upgrade guide describes access to RAM and M.2 storage on the OMEN models it covers, instructs users to disconnect the battery before handling internal components, and directs readers to the device-specific manual. It also says that user-accessible RAM and storage upgrades generally will not void the HP warranty, while damage caused during installation may not be covered. Those statements apply to the guide’s HP models and US guidance; check the warranty terms for your device, brand and country.

Tools and opening methods are model-specific too. HP’s guide calls for a screwdriver for its described panel; consult your own service instructions for the required bit and whether an opening pick is appropriate. Do not treat a generic tool list as a requirement for every laptop.
