Gaming laptop cooling pads can work, but they are not a universal fix. A pad helps when its airflow reaches the laptop’s underside intake vents and the laptop’s own cooler has room to use that extra air. A basic mat can make almost no measurable difference, while a well-matched active cooler may lower temperatures at the cost of more fan noise. The only reliable way to judge one is to compare the same laptop, workload and settings with the pad on and off.
That conditional answer matters because cooling-pad results are often presented as if one temperature reduction applies to every machine. Published tests instead show a wide spread: one laptop dropped 12°C at the CPU and 6°C at the GPU, while another produced the same maximum CPU temperature and almost the same benchmark score with a conventional mat.

What a cooling pad actually does
A gaming laptop cooling pad is a powered or unpowered stand that raises the chassis and, in active models, blows air toward its underside. It can help in two distinct ways:
- Clearance: lifting the laptop can open a restricted air path and prevent a desk, blanket or lap from covering intake grilles.
- Forced airflow: fans push additional room air toward those grilles. This only helps if the fan positions and the laptop’s intake pattern line up.
The pad does not replace the laptop’s heat pipes, heatsink, internal fans or firmware limits. If the laptop’s intake is elsewhere, if the pad’s fans are too weak or poorly positioned, or if the system is already limited by software rather than heat, the extra airflow may produce little change. More fans or a higher advertised fan count is not proof of better cooling.

ASUS Republic of Gamers summarizes the likely benefit this way: “External fans underneath the chassis add cooler intake air, which helps most on thinner or budget-tier laptops where the stock cooling system has less headroom to begin with.” That is manufacturer guidance, not a controlled estimate for every model.
What controlled comparisons found
The clearest evidence comes from tests that kept a laptop and workload constant. These figures belong to the specific machines and accessories tested; they are not promises for another model.
Notebookcheck: a large drop on an MSI GP65 10SFK
In a Witcher 3 gaming test, Notebookcheck selected an MSI GP65 10SFK because it has relatively generous ventilation on the bottom. Without a Havit pad, the test averaged 92°C at the CPU and 76°C at the GPU. With the pad, the averages were 80°C and 70°C respectively. That is a 12°C CPU difference and a 6°C GPU difference in that setup.

The same comparison measured 53.9 dB(A) without the pad and 59.2 dB(A) with it. The lower temperatures therefore came with an audible increase in noise. Notebookcheck specifically warns that results vary with the size and layout of a laptop’s intake grille. The publication date is not stated on the cited page, so these numbers should be treated as a report of that test rather than a current industry average.
WIRED: a conventional mat that barely changed the result
WIRED tested a Targus 17-inch Dual Fan Chill Mat with a Razer Blade 16. The mat produced an 85°C maximum CPU temperature and a 3DMark Time Spy score of 18,013. Without a pad, the same test recorded 85°C and 17,942. The 71-point score difference is small enough that it should not be treated as a meaningful performance gain without repeated runs and an uncertainty range.
In the same series, an active Razer pad performed better on the Blade 16: the laptop reached 85°C with no pad, 86°C with the Razer pad switched off, 77°C with it switched on, and 75°C in Hyperboost mode. Hyperboost applies only to certain recent Blade 16 generations according to the article. The figures show why a powered, targeted design cannot be judged by the result of a broad, low-power mat.

TechRadar: useful comparison, not a universal ranking
TechRadar used a 15-minute 3DMark Steel Nomad run and thermal-camera measurements on an Acer Predator Helios 300 with an RTX 3080. Its table reports different temperature rises for individual pads. Because the test used one laptop, one graphics configuration and a 15-minute workload, the results are best used to compare those pads inside that test, not to predict a fixed improvement for every owner. A thermal-camera surface reading is also not interchangeable with a CPU sensor reading from another review.
What the evidence does not establish
No named population study or independent broad estimate establishes a typical cooling-pad benefit. Claims that every pad lowers temperatures by a standard 5–20°C are therefore not verified averages. A result must always carry its laptop model, workload, measurement type and pad configuration with it.
Why one laptop benefits and another does not
Intake alignment is the first check
Turn the laptop over and identify the intake openings, not the exhaust vents. A pad is most plausible when its fans sit directly under those openings. If the laptop draws air through narrow slots at the rear while the pad’s fans sit in the center, much of the airflow may strike solid plastic. A sealed or targeted cooler can behave differently from a wide mat with two slowly spinning fans.

The chassis and cooler design set the ceiling
Thin or budget systems often have less thermal headroom, so added intake air can matter more. A large gaming laptop with generous vents and a capable internal cooler may already be near the best temperature its design can deliver. The Notebookcheck MSI result illustrates the first case; the nearly unchanged WIRED Targus result illustrates the second.
Workload, power mode and room conditions matter
A short game menu, a 15-minute benchmark and an hours-long CPU-and-GPU render do not load the cooling system in the same way. Performance mode, fan profile, frame-rate limits and ambient temperature also change the heat entering the test. Comparing different settings can make a pad appear effective or ineffective when the real cause is the workload.

If a laptop sits on fabric, a bed or a soft cushion, the material can block underside vents. Moving it to a hard, flat surface may restore airflow before a fan is added. An unpowered stand test is valuable because it separates the benefit of elevation from the benefit of forced airflow.

Fix airflow and settings before buying a pad
Use this order when a laptop runs hot:
- Move it to a hard, flat surface. Do not test on a blanket, mattress or other soft material that can cover the intake.
- Inspect and clean the vents. Dust buildup can restrict the intake and exhaust paths. Follow the laptop maker’s service instructions; do not force debris deeper into the chassis.
- Check background activity. Unwanted updates, launchers, browser tabs or other processes can keep the CPU busy at idle and during games.
- Review the power and fan profile. A balanced mode, a sensible frame-rate cap or a lower processor power limit can reduce heat with less noise than an external fan.
- Check the room temperature. Record ambient conditions so a cooler or warmer room is not mistaken for a pad effect.
- Consider service only when appropriate. If temperatures are abnormal after cleaning and software checks, consult model-specific guidance about internal fans or thermal-paste service. Do not open a warranty-covered laptop casually.
- Evaluate a cooling pad last. Choose one whose fan layout matches the intake vents and whose size supports the laptop securely.
How to test a pad fairly at home
A simple before-and-after test is more useful than a manufacturer’s maximum fan-speed claim. Keep every variable constant and write down the results.
- Prepare the setup. Use the same laptop, charger, room, desk and external monitor arrangement for every run. Place the laptop on the same hard surface.
- Choose one repeatable workload. Use the same game scene or benchmark, resolution, graphics settings, frame-rate cap, power mode and fan profile. A repeatable benchmark is easier to compare than an unpredictable multiplayer match.
- Start from a comparable thermal state. Let the machine cool to the same idle condition before each run. Do not compare a cold start with a run immediately after another benchmark.
- Run three conditions when possible. Measure the laptop alone, on an elevated but unpowered stand, and on the powered pad. This reveals whether clearance or forced airflow is responsible for any change.
- Hold the load long enough. Short bursts can miss heat soak. RTINGS describes a 20-minute method that runs Cinebench R23 and UNIGINE Heaven simultaneously before measuring keyboard-deck temperature. You can use a shorter repeatable test, but state its duration.
- Record the right measurements. Log CPU and GPU temperatures after sustained load, benchmark score or average frame rate, pad fan setting and noise. Measure noise from the same distance each time; a phone microphone is useful for relative comparisons but not a calibrated laboratory value.
- Repeat each condition. Run at least two or three passes and look for a consistent pattern. A one-run score difference can come from normal benchmark variation.
- Report the limits. Identify the laptop, workload, settings, room conditions, duration and sensor type. Never present the result as a universal temperature reduction.
How to choose between pad types
| Type | Likely advantage | Limit or trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Passive ventilated stand | Raises the chassis, improves clearance and can be silent | Adds no forced airflow; benefit depends on the laptop’s own fans and vent layout |
| Broad, low-power fan mat | Usually inexpensive and may cool a laptop with large, open intake areas | Airflow can miss the intakes; the WIRED Targus test showed no change in maximum CPU temperature |
| Targeted or sealed active cooler | Can deliver more air to a defined intake zone and produced a larger drop in the WIRED Razer Blade 16 test | May cost more, require USB power and add fan noise; compatibility depends on the chassis seal and vent pattern |
Before purchase, check the pad’s supported screen size, the actual contact area, the fan positions, speed controls, USB requirements, anti-slip surface and tilt range. Stability matters: a pad that makes the laptop wobble can be worse for gaming than a quiet stand. Treat product names and test hardware as examples, not proof of current availability or best-in-class status.
When a pad is worth trying
| Your situation | Practical decision |
|---|---|
| The laptop is on a bed, blanket or soft cushion | Move it to a hard, flat surface first. Do not use a pad to compensate for blocked vents. |
| Bottom intakes are visible and gaming heat is sustained | A pad is worth testing if its fans align with those intakes. Compare temperature, performance and noise. |
| Temperatures are stable and there are no slowdowns or shutdowns | A pad may add little thermal value. A stand could still improve ergonomics or viewing angle. |
| The pad lowers temperature but is too loud | Try a lower fan setting and compare it with passive elevation. Keep the quieter option if performance remains stable. |
| Temperatures are high even at idle | Investigate dust, background processes, power settings and model-specific service guidance before buying an accessory. |
Common mistakes that produce misleading results
- Comparing different sensors: a thermal-camera surface hotspot, a CPU package sensor and a GPU edge sensor are different measurements.
- Changing several controls at once: a new fan profile, lower graphics settings and a cooling pad cannot be credited separately unless tested in separate conditions.
- Ignoring noise: a lower temperature is not automatically a better result if the added fan noise makes the laptop unpleasant to use.
- Using a brief load: a pad may appear effective during a short burst but provide little advantage after the chassis reaches steady state.
- Assuming a benchmark score proves cooling: the WIRED Targus result changed from 17,942 to 18,013 in Time Spy while the maximum CPU temperature stayed at 85°C. Small score changes need repeated runs.
- Expecting a pad to repair hardware: a failing internal fan, blocked heatsink or degraded thermal interface requires diagnosis and service, not simply more external airflow.
Bottom line for gaming-laptop owners
Cooling pads work conditionally. The strongest case is a laptop with clear bottom intakes, sustained gaming heat and a pad whose airflow reaches those openings. Elevation alone can solve a blocked-airflow problem, while an active cooler can lower temperatures further but may increase noise. Published tests range from substantial reductions to almost no change, so there is no honest universal °C or FPS promise. Test the laptop on a hard surface, clean and configure it properly, then compare pad-on, pad-off and (when possible) unpowered-elevation results under identical conditions.
