There is no universal best gaming handheld: the right choice depends on the games and launchers you need, the performance you expect away from a charger, and how long you want to play between charges. Compare devices using your own games and settings, not processor names or battery capacity alone.
How should you compare gaming handheld performance?
A processor specification cannot tell you how a particular game will run. Performance depends on the game, resolution, graphics settings, frame-rate target, power mode, firmware and drivers—and whether the handheld is plugged in. The official specifications cited here do not establish a controlled, same-game performance ranking among these devices.

Start with your games and launchers
Check compatibility for the specific games you play, including launcher and anti-cheat requirements. ASUS says the Windows-based ROG Ally X supports Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic, GOG and other storefronts. Valve presents Steam Deck as portable PC gaming through SteamOS, with fast suspend and resume. Lenovo sells Legion Go S configurations with SteamOS as well as Windows; the operating system and hardware depend on the SKU. Nintendo Switch 2 is a console with its own game library, not a general Windows or Steam handheld.

- Choose around the games you actually want to play, not the broadest-looking processor comparison.
- Verify individual games, launchers and anti-cheat support on the operating system of the exact model.
- For PC handhelds, consider whether you prefer SteamOS or Windows and are comfortable using that interface.
Power mode changes the tradeoff
On the 2024 ROG Ally X, ASUS lists 10W Silent, 15W Performance and 25W Turbo modes, with 30W Turbo available on AC power. Its published FPS examples use Turbo at 30W while plugged in, and ASUS cautions that results vary with configuration and driver maturity. Those figures are not evidence of the same frame rates in battery mode.

How long does a gaming handheld battery last?
Battery capacity, measured in watt-hours (Wh), is not a runtime promise. A demanding game can drain a battery much faster than streaming, browsing or a small 2D game; brightness, wireless use and power settings also matter. The figures below are manufacturer estimates or claims, not one comparable test across all devices.
| Device | Battery information | What the maker says about runtime |
|---|---|---|
| Original Steam Deck | 40Wh | Valve says several hours for most games; approximately 7–8 hours maximum for lighter use such as streaming, small 2D games or browsing. Valve specifications. |
| Steam Deck OLED | 50Wh, up from 40Wh on LCD | Valve claims 30–50% more battery life than LCD and lists 3–12 hours depending on content. Valve OLED information. |
| ROG Ally X (2024) | 80Wh | ASUS estimates more than 2.7 hours of heavy AAA gaming on its regional product page; this is not a guarantee for every game or setting. ASUS product information. |
| Legion Go S | 55.5Wh is listed for a specific PSREF configuration; confirm the exact SKU because the family varies. | A directly comparable runtime figure is not established here. Lenovo PSREF configuration. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Runtime estimate depends on games and conditions. | Nintendo estimates approximately 2–6.5 hours. Nintendo specifications. |
For the Switch 2, Nintendo explicitly says battery life depends on the games played and usage conditions. For any model, use the maker’s range as a planning guide, then look for a test of your intended game and settings if you need a more specific estimate.

What those battery figures can—and cannot—tell you
The Steam Deck OLED’s larger battery and Valve’s stated improvement are comparisons against the LCD Steam Deck, not a standardized result against other brands. Likewise, an 80Wh or 55.5Wh capacity describes stored energy, not how many hours a game will run. Do not turn a battery-capacity figure into a runtime estimate without a matched test.
Steam Deck OLED vs Lenovo Legion Go S: which should you buy?
These are not single, fixed configurations. Steam Deck OLED is a SteamOS handheld; Legion Go S is sold in SteamOS and Windows configurations with variant-specific hardware. The more useful comparison is the particular Legion Go S SKU against the Steam Deck OLED, based on the games and operating system you want.
- Lean toward Steam Deck OLED if SteamOS and your Steam library are the priority, and you want Valve’s stated 3–12-hour content-dependent runtime range and microSD expansion.
- Consider Legion Go S if a particular SteamOS or Windows configuration better fits your software needs. Check the exact processor, operating system and battery specification for its SKU before comparing it with another handheld.
- Do not declare a performance winner from the product names alone. The official evidence here does not provide a controlled comparison using the same game and settings.
Screen type and grip comfort can also affect the choice. Compare the exact display and controls, and try a device in hand if comfort matters to you; specifications alone cannot settle a subjective fit.

Which handheld should you buy?
Match the device to the platform and use case before comparing headline specifications. The 2024 ROG Ally X is a Windows 11 PC handheld with an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme, 24GB of memory on the documented configuration and an 80Wh battery. Steam Deck emphasizes SteamOS and suspend/resume. Legion Go S has multiple operating-system and hardware variants. Switch 2 is a console choice for Nintendo’s library.

Without a same-game, same-settings test, there is no substantiated fastest-device winner among the models discussed here. A specification can identify features and power modes; it cannot replace testing the games you care about.

| Device | Documented storage option | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| ROG Ally X (2024) | ASUS documents M.2 2280 SSD storage expansion. ASUS product information. | Confirm the exact Ally model and SSD compatibility. |
| Steam Deck | Valve documents microSD expansion. Valve hardware specifications. | Check the model’s supported card type and storage needs. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Game storage requires microSD Express. Ordinary microSD cards are limited to copying screenshots and videos from the original Switch. Nintendo specifications. | Buy a microSD Express card for Switch 2 game storage, not a standard microSD card. |
For Legion Go S, use the specification for the precise SKU and do not assume the storage expansion path of another Legion model applies.
When should you upgrade your gaming handheld?
There is no substantiated universal annual or generational upgrade schedule. Upgrade when the current device has a concrete limitation that a replacement would solve and the improvement is worth its cost to you.
- Games no longer run acceptably: decide whether lower settings or a different power mode would be enough before replacing the device.
- Runtime no longer fits your sessions: compare realistic use-case estimates, not battery capacities in isolation.
- Storage is full: check whether a supported card or internal upgrade can solve the problem more economically.
- A newer device fixes a limitation you care about: weigh that specific change against its price, library compatibility and operating system.
A newer revision does not necessarily mean a major processor-performance jump. In ASUS’s comparison of the original ROG Ally and the 2024 Ally X, ASUS highlights changes to battery, memory, storage, cooling, ports and ergonomics while retaining the Z1 Extreme processor. ASUS’s Ally comparison illustrates why it is worth checking what actually changed rather than upgrading by model year alone.
Also distinguish similarly named products. The 2024 ROG Ally X is not the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X; ASUS lists 80Wh for the latter and a 65W USB-C adapter specification, but adapter inclusion depends on market and model. Check the 2025 model’s specifications and its exact SKU rather than applying them to the 2024 device.
