Reports published on October 6, 2026 say GameStop is asking $1,399.99 for a pre-owned or refurbished PS5 Pro, and $1,499.99 for configurations labeled “physical”. Sony’s current U.S. recommended price for a new PS5 Pro is $899.99. Those figures come from news coverage of an alleged internal memo, and the memo has not been authenticated. Treat the range as a reported listing, not a confirmed or stable price.
What was reported
- Tom’s Hardware reported that GameStop raised the price of refurbished PS5 Pro units to $1,399.99. It said an alleged employee memo described the above-new pricing as intentional, and that the prices were appearing on GameStop’s website.
- TweakTown reported $1,399.99 for a pre-owned digital configuration and $1,499.99 for configurations labeled physical. It also noted the pre-owned listing was marked unavailable online, and it pointed to a date inconsistency in the memo, calling its authenticity and timing uncertain.
The “intentional” wording is the outlets’ description of the memo. There is no authenticated copy of the memo, so it should not be read as a company statement.

Is the $1,399 GameStop PS5 Pro price real?
It is not verified. Two outlets reported the prices, but they rest on an alleged memo with a flagged date problem, and one listing was shown as unavailable online. When GameStop’s official product page was checked, it showed a new price of $899.99 and lower pre-owned and refurbished prices, with limited or unavailable stock. That does not corroborate the high figures. It may reflect a change over time, a different location or configuration, or a different page state. Prices and stock at GameStop vary by location and time, so look at the live listing for your area.
How the numbers compare with Sony’s prices
| Price point | Amount (U.S.) | Difference from $899.99 | Multiple of $699.99 launch MSRP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sony launch MSRP, September 2024 | $699.99 | -$200 | 1.0x |
| Sony recommended price, effective April 2, 2026 | $899.99 | $0 | about 1.29x |
| Reported GameStop pre-owned digital | $1,399.99 | +$500 | 2.0x |
| Reported GameStop “physical” configuration | $1,499.99 | +$600 | about 2.14x |
The differences and multiples are our arithmetic from Sony’s published prices and the reported figures; Sony did not publish them. They also don’t show that a new console is in stock at every retailer.

Sony announced the $699.99 launch price in 2024, and Hideaki Nishino of Sony Interactive Entertainment said the console would be “available this holiday at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $699.99 USD.” The $899.99 figure came with Sony’s March 2026 price increase. Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s vice president of global marketing, wrote: “With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why would a used console cost more than a new one?
No authenticated explanation exists. The coverage says only that the alleged memo called the pricing intentional. A listing marked unavailable online can also work as a placeholder rather than a real offer. Nothing gathered shows completed sales at these prices, so a listed price here is not evidence of market value. Read it as an asking price, not what buyers are paying.
Does the PS5 Pro come with a disc drive?
No. The PS5 Pro is a 2 TB all-digital console. Sony sells the Disc Drive separately, and it can be added later. Its 2024 announcement described the add-on as an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive. The “physical” label in the reports is the outlets’ wording. Whether GameStop’s $1,499.99 configuration includes a drive, and in what condition, has not been established.
Quick Recap
What to check before paying for a used PS5 Pro
- Price against $899.99. If a used or refurbished unit costs close to or more than Sony’s recommended price for a new one, buying new is the better deal.
- Condition label. New, pre-owned and refurbished are different things.
- Configuration. Confirm whether a disc drive is included, since the base console has none.
- Stock and location. Online “unavailable” status and store-level stock can differ.
- Membership pricing, warranty and return terms. GameStop’s terms for the reported high-priced configurations have not been established, so confirm them rather than assume.
