Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf you want escalating police pressure and the tension of getting away, Need for Speed Heat is the strongest pick for sustained car chases. For a broader open-world crime-and-wanted loop, try Cyberpunk 2077: its Update 2.0 police system responds to criminal activity, escalates to five Heat stars, and lets you escape on foot or in a vehicle. Need for Speed Unbound and Payback are other driving-focused options, but these games do not reproduce GTA’s systems in the same way.
Which game is closest to GTA’s wanted-system feel?
Cyberpunk 2077 is the best fit here if you want police to react to crime in a broader open-world setting rather than chase you only because you are driving. CD Projekt Red’s Update 2.0 announcement, published August 31, 2023, describes police responding to criminal activity, escalating Heat up to five stars, deploying roadblocks and pursuing players in vehicles. To escape, leave the scene and stay out of sight, on foot or in a vehicle.

This is a description of the police system introduced in Update 2.0, not a claim that every detail remains unchanged in all later versions. CD Projekt Red framed the design around a simple rule: “don’t do the crime if you can’t take the heat.”

| Need for Speed Heat | EA’s manual describes different police behavior by day and night, increasingly powerful police vehicles at higher HEAT, escape maneuvers, and the risk of being busted if boxed in or wrecked. | Escalating open-world car pursuits. |
| Need for Speed Unbound | EA says racing builds heat and gives players choices to outrun police, confront them, or hide. | Driving-focused chases with explicit tactical escape choices. |
| Need for Speed Payback | EA’s launch announcement highlights open-world cop chases, Rhino reinforcements, helicopters, and bait crates that trigger pursuits. | Open-world driving and set-piece police pursuits. |
Need for Speed Heat: pressure that ramps up
Heat is the clearest choice when the main appeal is a pursuit that gets more dangerous as it continues. Its manual distinguishes day and night pursuit behavior and describes police vehicles becoming more powerful at higher HEAT. You can try to evade them, but being boxed in or wrecking can get you busted. That makes the chase itself the central attraction; it is not a general on-foot wanted system like the one described for Cyberpunk 2077.
#1 Best Overall
- Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
- Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
- An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
- Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.
Need for Speed Unbound: choose how to deal with the pursuit
In Unbound, racing generates heat, then you decide whether to outrun the police, confront them, or hide. That makes it a good alternative if you want more than one approach to ending a chase, while keeping the focus on driving.
Need for Speed Payback: reinforcements and pursuit triggers
Payback adds open-world cop chases with reinforcements such as Rhinos and helicopters. EA also describes bait crates that set off a pursuit, making it an option for players who like police encounters triggered as part of driving activities. EA’s announcement lists PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC as launch platforms in 2017; that is historical release information, not confirmation of current store or edition availability.

How to choose
- Want a broader crime-and-wanted loop? Choose Cyberpunk 2077 for the documented Update 2.0 system, which reacts to criminal activity and allows escape on foot or in a vehicle.
- Want sustained, escalating car chases? Start with Need for Speed Heat, whose manual specifically describes stronger police at higher HEAT and the consequences of getting caught.
- Want several ways to handle police? Consider Need for Speed Unbound for its outrun, confront, or hide choices.
- Want set-piece pursuit encounters? Look at Need for Speed Payback for its documented reinforcements and bait-crate pursuits.
What about Watch Dogs?
Watch Dogs is an adjacent urban open-world option if hacking and manipulating city systems are part of the appeal. Ubisoft’s official page establishes the Chicago setting and hacking premise, but does not substantiate detailed police-chase mechanics. Treat it as a thematic alternative, not a confirmed match for GTA-style pursuits. The reviewed page lists a May 27, 2014 release date and PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 platforms; those are the page’s historical details, not a current availability check.
