It is the closest documented match for two playable leads, separate campaigns, consequential choices, alternate routes and multiple endings. Mike & Tyler is the better choice for a two-character detective mystery, while Empire of Sin is built around running a criminal organization. The Wolf Among Us 2 belongs on the list for branching noir, although its official listing does not establish a dual-protagonist structure.
What GTA VI establishes as the comparison point
Rockstar’s official description puts Jason and Lucia at the center of a criminal partnership. An easy score goes wrong, and the pair become involved in “a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida,” forcing them to depend on each other. That combination of two leads, crime, escalating danger and a large American setting is the specific appeal behind searches for games like GTA 6.

The official page currently lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and shows November 19, 2026 as the release date. Release schedules can change, so verify that date and the platform list when you are ready to buy. The page confirms Jason and Lucia, but it does not document a branching campaign, a number of endings or a selectable story route. A game can therefore resemble GTA VI in its characters and criminal premise without matching its eventual mission structure.

Back to the Dawn is the closest structural match
Back to the Dawn is the strongest recommendation when “like GTA 6” means two distinct criminals or investigators whose decisions can send the story down different paths. The setting is a gritty animal metropolis divided by crime and corruption, and the game lets you choose between two very different points of view:
#1 Best Overall
- Thomas is a journalist who has been wrongfully convicted and must survive a prison system built on lies and power.
- Bob is an undercover investigator sent deep into that same prison system.
The publisher describes each protagonist’s storyline as lasting more than 20 hours. That is a per-storyline figure, not a guarantee that every player will spend the same amount of time; optional quests, failed attempts and route choices can change a playthrough. The game also advertises more than 100 handcrafted quests and more than 500,000 words of narrative.
How the branching works
The meaningful comparison with GTA VI is not driving or map size. It is the way a decision can alter the route you take through a crime story. Back to the Dawn documents multiple escape routes, each with its own risks and rewards, plus several possible endings. You are choosing how to gather information, whom to trust and how to deal with the prison’s competing interests rather than simply following one cinematic sequence.
- Separate campaigns: Thomas and Bob give you two perspectives on the same corrupt environment instead of a single hero with occasional companions.
- Route selection: Escape plans can differ in their dangers and benefits, making preparation part of the narrative rather than a post-mission score.
- Replay value: Playing the other protagonist exposes a different storyline, and revisiting choices can reveal alternate routes and endings.
Where it differs from GTA VI
This is a prison-break RPG, not a driving-focused open-world action game. Expect dialogue, resource management, investigations and careful planning to carry more weight than high-speed pursuits across a huge map. If your priority is a pair of leads with genuinely different campaigns and documented endings, it is an unusually close fit. If your priority is a modern open-world city, third-person gunplay and vehicle freedom, it is a different genre.

Empire of Sin suits players who want to run the crime world
Empire of Sin shifts the focus from a fixed pair of protagonists to the person at the top of an organized-crime operation. It is set in 1920s Prohibition-era Chicago, where you select one of 14 fictional or historically inspired mob bosses and build a gang around that choice.
Rank #2
- Platform- Sony Playstation 1
Your criminal organization is a system to manage. You recruit and equip gang members, contest territory, protect income and operate businesses such as speakeasies and casinos. Supply chains and the relationships between rival groups matter alongside combat. The result is a crime sandbox in which strategic choices have consequences over a campaign, even though it does not present a documented Jason-and-Lucia-style dual narrative.
What its branching decisions look like
- Boss selection: Your starting leader changes the tone and capabilities of the organization.
- Territory decisions: Expanding too quickly can provoke rivals; consolidating can leave opportunities unclaimed.
- Business choices: Speakeasies, casinos and supply operations create competing priorities for money and protection.
- Gang management: Recruitment, loyalty and combat roles influence whether an operation survives a feud.
Those choices create a branching strategic campaign rather than a branching detective plot. The game is turn-based strategy and management, so it is best compared with GTA VI on criminal-world progression and territory control, not on real-time driving or a two-hero action structure. The publisher lists PC and console availability; check the store page for the specific edition and platform you intend to use.
Mike & Tyler is the two-character detective option
Mike & Tyler is a Miami Vice-inspired point-and-click murder mystery. You investigate a body, examine clues, deduce suspects and switch between the two detectives. Some puzzles require both characters, so the central mechanic is cooperation rather than merely selecting a different conversation partner.
Why the switching matters
Mike and Tyler can approach the same case from different positions. One may uncover a clue while the other can interpret it, reach a different location or perform an action that changes the available solution. Timing and coordination are part of solving the case, which gives the pair a functional reason to exist as two playable investigators.
- Clue analysis: Gather and connect evidence instead of relying on combat or vehicle missions.
- Character switching: Move between detectives when a puzzle or location requires a particular action.
- Joint solutions: Use both characters together for cooperation-based puzzles.
- Noir tone: The Miami Vice influence points to a stylized crime investigation rather than an open-world crime spree.
The available listing identifies it as a 2026 release and currently presents it as a wishlist title. It does not document a branching campaign or multiple endings, so choose it for dual-character deduction and atmosphere, not as evidence of GTA VI-style narrative branching.

The Wolf Among Us 2 offers branching noir without a confirmed dual lead
The Wolf Among Us 2 is the right companion recommendation if your main requirement is a dark crime-adjacent thriller in which choices have lasting consequences. Telltale’s official listing describes a dark neon-noir narrative with branching choices. That makes it relevant to the “multiple outcomes” part of the question.

The available official description does not establish a two-protagonist structure, so it should not be presented as a direct answer to “Which games let me switch between two criminal leads?” Its strength is authored, choice-driven drama: conversations, alliances and decisions can alter what happens later. It is closer to an interactive noir series than to a systems-heavy sandbox or a two-character puzzle game.

For two complete storylines and replayable endings
Choose Back to the Dawn. It is the only researched recommendation that explicitly combines two protagonists, separate storylines, multiple routes and several endings. The prison setting also makes trust, information and escape planning central to the crime narrative.
For empire building and criminal logistics
Choose Empire of Sin. Its 14 boss choices, gang recruitment, territory conflicts, businesses and supply chains provide the deepest management layer in this group. Accept that you are directing a turn-based organization, not alternating between two fixed heroes.
For detective work with a partner
Choose Mike & Tyler. Switching between the detectives and combining their abilities directly serves the investigation. It is the most literal match for a two-person crime-solving team, but the available description does not promise branching endings.
For consequence-driven neon noir
Choose The Wolf Among Us 2. Its documented selling point is branching choices with lasting consequences. Do not assume that means two playable protagonists or a GTA-sized open world; those details are not established by the official listing used here.
For the GTA VI reference experience
Wait for Grand Theft Auto VI if your priority is Jason and Lucia’s criminal partnership in Leonida. The current official page lists PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and shows November 19, 2026, but it does not yet confirm how many story branches or endings the finished game will contain. Treat any claim about its exact branching design as speculation until Rockstar publishes it.
Platform and purchase checks
Platform information is part of the decision because these games are not interchangeable releases:
- GTA VI: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are the platforms currently listed by Rockstar.
- Back to the Dawn: Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 are listed, including standard and limited package editions.
- Empire of Sin: The publisher describes PC and console availability; confirm the exact console storefront and edition before purchasing.
- Mike & Tyler: The listing is for a 2026 title and currently emphasizes wishlisting, so release timing and final platforms may change.
- The Wolf Among Us 2: Check the current official listing for up-to-date platform and launch information rather than assuming the details of the earlier game.
Physical availability, regional editions and retailer stock can change independently of a publisher’s product page. In particular, “Back to the Dawn PS5” identifies the documented package edition, not a guaranteed price, inventory level or retailer offer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

These games use the word in different ways, so the distinction matters before you choose:
| Type of branching | Best example here | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Route and ending branching | Back to the Dawn | Escape methods, risks, rewards and several possible endings |
| Strategic state branching | Empire of Sin | Territory, businesses, gang strength and rival relationships |
| Puzzle-path variation | Mike & Tyler | The order and combination in which two detectives solve clues and tasks |
| Choice-and-consequence drama | The Wolf Among Us 2 | Decisions with consequences that persist through the narrative |
| Unconfirmed story branching | GTA VI | The official page confirms the partnership and conspiracy, but not routes or endings |
Using this framework prevents a common mismatch: a game may have many strategic outcomes without offering alternate scripted endings, or it may have dialogue consequences without letting you switch protagonists. Decide which kind of variation you want before treating a recommendation as a GTA VI substitute.
Bottom line
Back to the Dawn is the best overall answer for dual protagonists plus a branching crime story. Empire of Sin is the specialist pick for building a criminal empire, Mike & Tyler for cooperative detective work, and The Wolf Among Us 2 for branching noir. GTA VI remains the reference point for Jason and Lucia’s criminal partnership, while its own branching structure is still not officially specified.
