Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is the best choice for a focused open-world samurai journey. Pick Rise of the Ronin if deep combat systems, weapon experimentation and movement tools matter most. Stay with Where Winds Meet if you want Chinese wuxia, supernatural martial arts, a huge activity-filled world and optional four-player co-op.

What makes Where Winds Meet distinctive?
Where Winds Meet is an open-world action-adventure RPG rooted in the wuxia tradition. Its setting is tenth-century China, and the game combines historical atmosphere with supernatural martial-arts abilities, character customization and a broad range of activities.
The scale is unusually ambitious for this niche. The official feature description lists more than 20 distinct regions, thousands of points of interest and more than 150 hours of solo gameplay. The world is designed for wandering rather than simply following a quest marker: changing time and weather affect the feel of travel, while exploration, puzzles and combat can all draw on the same martial-arts toolkit.

Weapons and martial arts
You can build around a sword, spear, dual blades, glaive, fan or umbrella, and bows provide a ranged option. The game also includes more than 40 Martial Mystic Arts. These abilities are not limited to damage rotations; they can assist with movement, exploration and puzzle-solving, allowing the same character build to approach an encounter or environmental obstacle in several ways.
Solo play and co-op
The campaign can be played alone, but seamless co-op supports up to four friends. That makes Where Winds Meet the most explicitly multiplayer-oriented option in this group, while still offering a substantial solo experience. Co-op is optional rather than a requirement for accessing the main open world.

1. Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut: the best focused samurai adventure
Choose Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut when you want the most polished, concentrated version of an open-world warrior story. It takes place in feudal Japan and follows Jin as he defends Tsushima using a katana, a bow and stealth techniques. The game’s priorities are clear: deliberate sword encounters, cinematic landscapes, quiet discovery and a campaign that can be completed without managing a sprawling collection of unrelated systems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy it resembles Where Winds Meet
- Open-world travel: Tsushima is built around moving between landmarks, settlements and natural spaces rather than clearing a series of disconnected stages.
- Martial combat: Katana duels reward timing, positioning and switching approaches as opponents change.
- Multiple approaches: You can confront enemies directly, use the bow from range or rely on stealth.
- Discovery-led exploration: Riding across the countryside and following environmental clues keeps exploration tied to the world’s atmosphere.
What makes it different
This is a samurai adventure, not a wuxia fantasy. Jin does not have the broad supernatural skill catalogue or weapon roster found in Where Winds Meet. Its combat and progression are intentionally more focused, so players who want dozens of mystical techniques, puzzle abilities and highly varied weapon archetypes may find it less mechanically expansive.

The Director’s Cut includes the Iki Island expansion, adding a separate area and story, and it includes Legends online co-op. Legends is a distinct multiplayer mode rather than a four-player version of the entire single-player campaign, so buy it for the quality of its campaign first and its optional online mode second.
Best for
Pick this edition if your ideal game is a self-contained samurai story with strong stealth, horseback travel, bow play and atmospheric sightseeing. It is the clearest recommendation for players who value polish and narrative focus over supernatural breadth.
2. Rise of the Ronin: the best alternative for combat-system depth
Rise of the Ronin is the stronger choice when the fighting system itself is your main reason to explore. Team NINJA describes it as a combat-focused open-world action RPG set during Japan’s Bakumatsu period, a time of political upheaval and rapid change.
A larger combat toolbox
The core arsenal includes katana and spear fighting, but the game also adds pistols, grappling hooks and gliding. That combination makes encounters feel more like a set of tactical problems than a single sword-fighting loop. You can change weapons to suit an opponent, use firearms to alter an engagement’s pace, and reposition with movement tools before committing to a close-range exchange.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Exploration connected to combat
Grappling and gliding are not merely cosmetic travel options. They let you approach areas from different angles and create vertical routes through the world. The result is a game that links traversal and fighting more directly than a conventional historical open-world RPG: movement can set up an ambush, provide an escape route or open a better vantage point.
How its tone compares with Where Winds Meet
Rise of the Ronin is historically grounded in its period and location, whereas Where Winds Meet deliberately blends a tenth-century Chinese setting with mystical martial arts. Expect political and historical context rather than supernatural wuxia spectacle. If you want flying techniques, magical arts and a large catalogue of fantastical abilities, it is not a one-for-one substitute. If you want demanding weapon choices and movement experimentation, it is the better fit.
Platforms and audience
The official release information lists PlayStation 5 and a Steam version. Choose it if you play on one of those platforms and prefer a combat-led open world with more mechanical experimentation than a traditional samurai drama.

3. Where Winds Meet: the broadest wuxia and co-op experience
If your priority is specifically Chinese wuxia, none of the alternatives matches Where Winds Meet as closely. Its world, weapon selection and supernatural systems are built around that tradition rather than adapting a different historical setting.

A world designed for variety
More than 20 regions and thousands of points of interest give exploration a deliberately large footprint. Dynamic time and weather help the same route feel different as you travel, while optional activities and environmental challenges sit alongside the main story. The game’s scale suits players who enjoy detouring from the critical path to investigate a distant landmark, test a new ability or uncover a side activity.
Martial Mystic Arts as utility tools
The more than 40 Martial Mystic Arts are notable because they support more than combat damage. Some can assist with traversal or puzzle-solving, so progression affects how you interact with the world as well as how you defeat enemies. This is the closest match for players who want martial arts to function as a complete adventure toolkit.
When co-op matters
Seamless co-op for up to four friends is the defining structural advantage over the two Japanese alternatives. You can approach the world as a solo RPG or bring friends into an experience designed to accommodate a group. Choose this game when shared exploration is a requirement rather than a bonus mode.

Platform and edition considerations
Platform availability differs significantly. Where Winds Meet is documented for PC and PlayStation 5. Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is listed for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Rise of the Ronin is listed for PlayStation 5 and Steam.
Store inventories, regional editions and prices can change. Check the current listing for your country and platform, and confirm whether an edition includes the expansion or online components you expect. A PlayStation 4 owner, for example, can access Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut but not the PlayStation 5-only releases in this comparison.
A practical decision checklist
- Decide whether wuxia is essential. If yes, choose Where Winds Meet; the other games use Japanese historical settings and do not reproduce its supernatural Chinese martial-arts identity.
- Decide how much system complexity you want. Choose Ghost of Tsushima for focus, Rise of the Ronin for combat experimentation or Where Winds Meet for the widest mix of weapons and mystical abilities.
- Decide whether the campaign must be playable with friends. Select Where Winds Meet for seamless four-player co-op. Select Ghost of Tsushima if a separate Legends mode meets your needs.
- Check your hardware before purchase. Match your system to the platform list and verify the current regional store page for edition contents.
- Set expectations about scale. A focused samurai campaign, a combat-heavy historical sandbox and a 20-plus-region wuxia world offer different amounts of side content and activity density; choose the structure you are most likely to finish and enjoy.
Bottom line
Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is the safest recommendation for a polished, focused open-world samurai adventure. Rise of the Ronin is the better pick for players who treat combat depth and movement options as the main attraction. Where Winds Meet remains the right choice for Chinese wuxia, supernatural martial arts, a very broad exploration map and optional co-op for up to four people.
