Games Like Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2: Best Narrative RPG Alternatives

Disco Elysium – The Final Cut is the closest match if what you want from Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is investigation, dangerous conversations and morally ambiguous choices. Choose Cyberpunk 2077 for a first-person dark-city action RPG, Dragon Age: The Veilguard for companion relationships and faction conflict, Red Dead Redemption 2 for cinematic character drama, or Baldur’s Gate 3 for the widest and most systemic choice set.

What makes Bloodlines 2 distinctive?

Paradox describes Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 as an action RPG set in Seattle’s vampire court. The Chinese Room’s game places dark secrets and a neo-noir murder mystery at the center of a story told through two alternating perspectives: the elder vampire Phyre and the Malkavian detective Fabien. That combination gives the game a specific identity: urban supernatural politics, investigation, dialogue-led decisions and real-time action rather than a conventional fantasy party adventure.

The official product wording is: “Navigate the vampire court of Seattle and its dark secrets in this action RPG, realized by the BAFTA award-winning studio The Chinese Room.” The launch release says the game is available on PC and consoles and includes Casual, Easy, Normal and Hard difficulty modes. Those details matter when choosing an alternative: a game can match the noir mood but not the first-person combat, or match the political intrigue while changing the viewpoint and role-playing system completely.

The recommendations below are therefore based on six practical axes: viewpoint, combat model, freedom to define the protagonist, narrative texture, setting and how visibly choices alter quests, factions or endings.

Quick comparison: which alternative fits your reason for playing?

Game Best for Viewpoint and combat What overlaps What changes
Disco Elysium – The Final Cut Investigation, dialogue and moral ambiguity Isometric; little conventional action combat Noir detective work, skills, branching choices and atmosphere Conversation and internal skill checks replace first-person action
Cyberpunk 2077 First-person urban action and customization First-person; real-time gunplay and open-world combat Dark city, story-rich quests and a customizable RPG character Cyberpunk rather than supernatural politics; much larger open-world scale
Dragon Age: The Veilguard Companions, faction conflict and party relationships Third-person; party-based real-time combat Identity, political factions and narrative focus Fantasy setting and a companion-led party structure
Red Dead Redemption 2 Cinematic authored-character drama Third-person (with optional first-person play); real-time action Mature themes, atmosphere, loyalty and consequential personal choices Western setting, slower pacing and less build-driven role-playing
Baldur’s Gate 3 Maximum systemic role-playing freedom Isometric; turn-based party combat Reactive narrative, faction consequences and major decisions A much broader blank-slate and party RPG model instead of first-person action

1. Disco Elysium – The Final Cut: the closest dialogue-and-investigation match

If the part of Bloodlines 2 that appeals most is being a detective in a compromised city, start here. Disco Elysium – The Final Cut casts you as an investigator rather than a combat-focused hero. Steam’s listed tags include Story Rich, Choices Matter, Detective, Noir and CRPG, a combination that maps directly to the mystery, interrogation and moral ambiguity many readers want from a vampire-court story.

Why it fits

  • Investigation is the main activity. You question people, interpret evidence and decide which leads to pursue rather than clearing a sequence of combat arenas.
  • The skill system changes conversations. Your abilities act as competing voices and sources of information, so a build affects what you notice, believe and say.
  • Choices have social and ethical weight. The game supports approaches that can be principled, corrupt, empathetic, reckless or absurd; its store description even frames the possibilities as being able to “crack murders or take bribes.”
  • The atmosphere is noir rather than heroic fantasy. A damaged city, compromised institutions and unreliable people create the same kind of pressure that makes supernatural court politics compelling.

What you give up

This is an isometric role-playing game with little conventional action combat. There is no first-person stealth-and-ability loop comparable to an action RPG, and the protagonist is defined through an unusual authored premise rather than a fully freeform avatar. If direct combat and movement through a 3D city are non-negotiable, choose Cyberpunk 2077 instead.

Who should choose it

Pick it when your priority order is investigation first, dialogue second and combat a distant third. It is also the strongest choice for readers who want every conversation to feel like a decision about identity, compromise and responsibility. The game released on 15 October 2019.

2. Cyberpunk 2077: the closest first-person dark-city action match

Cyberpunk 2077 is the most direct substitute for the physical experience of moving through a dangerous modern city as a customizable protagonist. Its official description calls it “an open-world, action-adventure RPG set in the dark future of Night City.” Steam’s tags include Story Rich, First-Person, Atmospheric, RPG and Character Customization.

Why it fits

  • First-person perspective keeps decisions immediate. Conversations, exploration and combat are experienced from the character’s eyes, preserving the sense of inhabiting a volatile city rather than directing a distant party.
  • Night City supports factional and personal stories. Main quests and side quests move between corporations, gangs, fixers and intimate character conflicts, giving political choices a street-level context.
  • Builds change how problems are solved. Character customization and equipment allow different approaches to fights, infiltration and mission objectives.
  • It combines dialogue with real-time action. You can move from a negotiation to stealth, hacking or a firefight without changing games or modes.

What you give up

The setting is cyberpunk, not a hidden supernatural society, so the rules, factions and social taboos are different. Its open-world scale also creates a broader range of activities and a less concentrated mystery than a Seattle court story. The action emphasis is stronger, with more gunplay and a larger equipment-and-build layer.

Who should choose it

Choose it if viewpoint and city exploration matter more than detective simulation. It is the best fit for someone asking for “a first-person story RPG with meaningful choices” who also wants substantial real-time combat and character customization. It released on 9 December 2020.

3. Dragon Age: The Veilguard: the best companion-led alternative

Dragon Age: The Veilguard shifts the focus from a solitary supernatural investigator to a team whose relationships are central to the campaign. Electronic Arts describes it as a single-player RPG in which you unite seven companions, each with rich lives, deep backstories, expertise and unique abilities. You play Rook, a customizable protagonist drawn into faction conflict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it fits

  • Companions are a primary narrative system. Seven recruitable characters provide different perspectives, personal histories and abilities, so the party itself becomes a source of plot and disagreement.
  • Faction conflict supplies political stakes. The story’s conflicts are organized around groups and their interests, making alliances and loyalties more important than a simple good-versus-evil path.
  • Rook offers protagonist ownership. Customization lets you define the player’s identity while the authored cast supplies the dramatic specificity a blank-slate party game can lack.
  • It keeps the emphasis on story. The structure is a single-player RPG built around character arcs, decisions and the consequences of bringing particular allies together.

What you give up

The game uses a fantasy setting and party-based combat rather than a first-person urban investigation. Its central pleasure is managing relationships and a team, not solving a single noir case from one investigator’s perspective. If you prefer a lone protagonist and a dense city mystery, Disco Elysium – The Final Cut is a closer thematic fit.

  • CREATE YOUR OWN CYBERPUNK
  • Explore the city of the future – you decide when you want to go where and how to get there
  • Decide how the story ends – your choices in the main game as well as in the spy thriller adventure Phantom Liberty lead to a complex web of consequences

Who should choose it

Choose The Veilguard when “better companions” is the main reason you are looking beyond Bloodlines 2. It is also suitable for players who want faction politics expressed through a cast of allies and a customizable hero, even if they are happy to leave the modern city behind.

4. Red Dead Redemption 2: the strongest cinematic character drama

Red Dead Redemption 2 follows Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde Gang in 1899. Rockstar’s store description begins, “America, 1899. Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde Gang are outlaws on the run.” The story is shaped by ideals, loyalty and divisions inside the gang, making it a strong alternative for readers who value authored character writing and an atmosphere that changes as a community comes under pressure.

Why it fits

  • Arthur’s identity gives every decision context. You are not inventing an entirely blank avatar; choices are filtered through an established person, his relationships and the gang’s code.
  • Loyalty is a mechanical and narrative concern. The gang’s internal divisions make personal allegiance, trust and betrayal more consequential than a simple mission checklist.
  • The world is built for slow observation. Travel, camp life and environmental detail create a deliberate rhythm in which mood and character development can carry as much weight as action.
  • Mature themes drive the drama. The story examines ideals, violence, survival and the cost of protecting a group that is losing its way.

What you give up

This is a western rather than an urban supernatural RPG. It is slower, more cinematic and more authored than build-driven; dialogue choices do not offer the same breadth of role definition as a dedicated CRPG. Although it supports first-person play as an option, its core presentation and structure are associated with third-person character drama and real-time action.

Who should choose it

Pick it when the appeal of Bloodlines 2 is the feeling of living inside a morally stressed community rather than the vampire rules themselves. It released on 5 December 2019 and is the best choice here for a long-form, emotionally cumulative story about loyalty and collapse.

Rank #4
Cyberpunk 2077 - PlayStation 4
  • Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world, action-adventure story set in Night City
  • Become a cyberpunk, an urban mercenary equipped with cybernetic enhancements and build your legend on the streets of Night City
  • Take the riskiest job of your life and go after a prototype implant that is the key to immortality

5. Baldur’s Gate 3: the broadest choice-driven CRPG

Baldur’s Gate 3 is the largest departure in presentation but the clearest answer to “what if every decision could radically redirect the story?” It is an isometric, turn-based, party-based CRPG with a much wider systemic role-playing model than Bloodlines 2’s first-person action structure.

Why it fits

  • Choices are systemic rather than merely conversational. Dialogue, exploration, abilities, items and party composition can all open or close routes through an encounter.
  • The party creates competing priorities. Companions have their own goals and reactions, so political decisions can affect both the external world and the group traveling with you.
  • Character creation is unusually broad. You can define a protagonist’s ancestry, class, abilities and role, then solve problems through combinations of those systems.
  • Consequences can reshape later content. Factions, quests and endings respond to decisions in ways that reward experimentation and replay.

What you give up

Combat is turn-based, the camera is isometric and the story is built around a party rather than a single first-person perspective. The freedom is broader but less tightly focused on noir investigation. If you want a detective’s voice, Disco Elysium – The Final Cut is more specialized; if you want real-time first-person action, choose Cyberpunk 2077.

Who should choose it

Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 when meaningful choices means the ability to approach situations through many different rules, allies and plans—not simply selecting a different line of dialogue. It is the recommendation for players willing to trade Bloodlines 2’s viewpoint and pace for maximum role-playing agency.

How the five games differ on the choices that matter

Viewpoint and immersion

Cyberpunk 2077 is the closest first-person substitute. Red Dead Redemption 2 can be played from first person but is fundamentally a cinematic character drama. Disco Elysium – The Final Cut and Baldur’s Gate 3 use isometric presentation, while The Veilguard uses a third-person party perspective.

Combat and pacing

For immediate real-time action, choose Cyberpunk 2077 or Red Dead Redemption 2. The Veilguard adds party abilities to real-time combat. Baldur’s Gate 3 replaces reflex-driven encounters with turn-based planning. Disco Elysium minimizes conventional combat so that investigation and conversation can dominate the pace.

Role-playing freedom

Baldur’s Gate 3 offers the broadest systemic freedom. Cyberpunk 2077 combines a customizable build with an authored protagonist. The Veilguard lets you customize Rook while giving companions strong authored identities. Disco Elysium uses skills to define how one investigator thinks and behaves. Red Dead Redemption 2 is the most authored: its strength is inhabiting Arthur Morgan, not redesigning him.

Narrative texture

Choose Disco Elysium for noir investigation, Cyberpunk 2077 for urban science-fiction crime and politics, The Veilguard for companion fantasy and faction conflict, Red Dead Redemption 2 for intimate tragedy and loyalty, and Baldur’s Gate 3 for reactive fantasy adventure with many possible routes.

A practical decision guide

  1. Start with your non-negotiable viewpoint. Select Cyberpunk 2077 for first person; accept isometric or third person for the other choices.
  2. Decide whether investigation or action comes first. Pick Disco Elysium for interrogation and deduction, or Cyberpunk 2077 for exploration and combat.
  3. Choose your relationship model. Select The Veilguard for a seven-companion team, Red Dead Redemption 2 for one authored protagonist inside a troubled community, or Baldur’s Gate 3 for a party whose members react to a highly customizable character.
  4. Set your tolerance for systemic complexity. Baldur’s Gate 3 asks you to learn turn-based combat, classes and interacting rules; Red Dead Redemption 2 and Disco Elysium deliver more directed experiences.
  5. Match the atmosphere. Noir points to Disco Elysium, neon urban danger to Cyberpunk 2077, factional fantasy to The Veilguard, historical outlaw tragedy to Red Dead Redemption 2, and high-freedom fantasy role-play to Baldur’s Gate 3.

Recommended play order after Bloodlines 2

There is no required order, but this sequence moves from the closest narrative texture to the biggest mechanical change:

  1. Disco Elysium – The Final Cut — retain the investigation, noir mood and dialogue-first decision making.
  2. Cyberpunk 2077 — retain first-person city exploration, customization and real-time action.
  3. Dragon Age: The Veilguard — shift to companion-led faction drama.
  4. Red Dead Redemption 2 — slow down for an authored story about loyalty and a community in crisis.
  5. Baldur’s Gate 3 — finish with the widest turn-based, systemic interpretation of consequential role-playing.

If companions are your immediate priority, move The Veilguard to the first position. If combat is the priority, start with Cyberpunk 2077; if you want to test how far choice systems can go, start with Baldur’s Gate 3.

Bottom line

Disco Elysium – The Final Cut is the best overall recommendation for the detective work, dialogue and moral ambiguity associated with Bloodlines 2. Cyberpunk 2077 is the best physical and structural match for first-person action in a dangerous city. Dragon Age: The Veilguard wins for companions and faction relationships, Red Dead Redemption 2 for cinematic character tragedy, and Baldur’s Gate 3 for the greatest freedom to define both your character and the consequences of your decisions.
