Games Like Vampire Crawlers: The Best Deck-Building Roguelikes to Try Next

Start with Slay the Spire if you want the closest traditional deck-building roguelike to Vampire Crawlers. Choose Balatro for runaway combo experimentation, Inscryption for horror and puzzles, or Monster Train for lane-based tactics and faction synergies. The right follow-up depends on which part of Vampire Crawlers: The Turbo Wildcard you want to keep.

Vampire Crawlers released on April 21, 2026, from poncle and Nosebleed Interactive. Its turn-based roguelite deckbuilder combines ascending-mana card combos, dungeon exploration, power-ups, legendary weapon evolutions and the Turboturn system. Its Steam page showed 94% positive English reviews from 8,580 reviews on October 18, 2026; store ratings change over time, so treat that figure as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent score.

What makes Vampire Crawlers distinctive?

Vampire Crawlers: The Turbo Wildcard translates the escalating power curve associated with Vampire Survivors into turn-based card combat. You explore dungeons while assembling a deck, spend and increase mana to create stronger turns, collect power-ups, and chase legendary weapon evolutions. The Turboturn system adds another layer to the rhythm of planning and execution.

That mixture gives you several different reasons to enjoy a run. You may care most about making a coherent deck from imperfect offers, discovering a combination that suddenly becomes overwhelming, inhabiting a dark world with a story, or making positional decisions on a battlefield. No single successor reproduces every element, so the recommendations below are organized around those specific attractions.

Quick comparison

Game What it preserves from Vampire Crawlers What it changes Best suited to
Slay the Spire Run-based deck construction, route choices, relic-like build decisions and adaptation to changing encounters Uses a more traditional single-combat deckbuilder structure rather than dungeon exploration with Vampire Survivors-style framing Players who want the clearest, deepest version of the genre
Balatro Small decisions that can snowball into absurd power and highly replayable runs Replaces fantasy combat with poker hands, jokers and score optimization Combo hunters, short-session players and theorycrafters
Inscryption Cards, run-based battles and the tension of making a build work with limited options Adds psychological horror, escape-room puzzles and a strongly authored campaign Players who want atmosphere, secrets and narrative surprises
Monster Train Synergy-driven deckbuilding and repeated attempts to refine a strategy Emphasizes stacked train floors, multiple factions and lane defense Players who want more board positioning and team composition

1. Slay the Spire: the closest pure deck-building match

Slay the Spire is the safest first recommendation because it concentrates on the central loop that Vampire Crawlers shares with the deck-building roguelike tradition: choose a route, make a series of imperfect card and item decisions, survive increasingly difficult encounters, and turn a temporary collection of cards into a functioning engine.

Mega Crit’s official Steam description says, “We fused card games and roguelikes together to make the best single player deckbuilder we could.” The game released on January 23, 2019. Its current listing describes four characters, more than 350 cards, more than 200 items, over 50 combat encounters and over 50 events. Those figures describe the content advertised by the listing; they are not a guarantee that every run will expose the same amount of content.

Why it follows Vampire Crawlers well

The important similarity is not setting but decision density. Each route asks whether you should take a risky fight for a better reward, visit an event, rest, or pursue another opportunity to strengthen the deck. Card rewards are valuable only when they fit a plan, and a card that looks powerful in isolation can make a deck less consistent when it does not support the rest of the build.

That makes Slay the Spire an excellent bridge if you enjoyed choosing cards in Vampire Crawlers but want a more explicit lesson in deck composition. You learn to value a reliable sequence of plays, to avoid adding cards merely because they are available, and to adjust an archetype when the run stops supplying its ideal pieces.

What feels different

Slay the Spire is more abstract and more deliberately card-game-like. Its route map, encounter rewards and relic decisions are the focus, while Vampire Crawlers adds dungeon presentation, weapon evolution and its own mana and Turboturn identity. If your favorite moments are visual exploration or the specific vampire-survivor fantasy, those elements do not carry over.

Choose it when

  • You want the genre’s most direct benchmark rather than a heavily themed variation.
  • You enjoy planning several encounters ahead instead of relying on a single spectacular turn.
  • You want a large pool of cards, items, events and characters to study over many runs.
  • You are comfortable losing while learning which choices make a deck consistent.

2. Balatro: the best place to chase broken combos

Balatro changes the subject from dungeon combat to poker mathematics, but it preserves the emotional arc of a great Vampire Crawlers run: a modest starting plan becomes a machine that produces ridiculous results once the right modifiers line up.

Released on February 20, 2024, its official listing calls it “The poker roguelike.” The design centers on making poker hands, acquiring game-changing jokers and exploiting interactions that multiply your score. You are not trying to play ordinary poker for a normal payout; you are building a scoring system whose rules can be bent by the modifiers you collect.

Why combo players should pick it

Balatro is the strongest alternative if the part of Vampire Crawlers you remember most is the moment a few upgrades suddenly become one escalating chain. Its pleasure comes from identifying an interaction, deciding whether to commit your limited resources to it, and testing how far the resulting engine can be pushed before the run’s requirements outgrow it.

The game also works well in short sessions. A run can deliver a complete experiment without requiring the same amount of route planning or narrative attention as a larger adventure. That makes it easy to play repeatedly, compare ideas, and return after a break without relearning a complicated plot.

What feels different

There is no vampire dungeon to explore and no conventional party or weapon build to manage. Your main language is hand type, multiplier, chips, joker interaction and score threshold. If you want positional tactics or a traditional fantasy campaign, Balatro will feel intentionally narrow. If you want to test whether one clever rule interaction can carry an entire run, that narrowness is its strength.

Choose it when

  • You prefer discovering interactions to following a fixed character build.
  • You enjoy score chasing and seeing a small advantage become an enormous one.
  • You want runs that are easy to start, stop and restart.
  • You like experimenting with modifiers even when a plan eventually fails.

3. Inscryption: the horror-and-puzzle alternative

Inscryption is the choice for readers who want their next deckbuilder to feel like an unsettling adventure rather than a pure optimization exercise. Its official site describes it as “an inky black card-based odyssey” that combines a deckbuilding roguelike, escape-room-style puzzles and psychological horror. It was developed by Daniel Mullins Games and published by Devolver Digital.

Why it fits after Vampire Crawlers

Both games use cards and run-based battles to create tension from limited information. You are making a build while the game withholds certainty about what comes next. The difference is that Inscryption makes the surrounding fiction part of the challenge. The cabin setting, unsettling presentation and mystery give context to the rules instead of treating them as a neutral combat interface.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

That makes it particularly effective for players who want to wonder what is behind the next door, not just calculate whether the next reward improves a deck. The escape-room layer also means that progress is not measured only by winning fights. Observation, experimentation and recognizing environmental clues matter alongside card decisions.

What feels different

Inscryption is more authored than an endless systems sandbox. Its surprises depend on encountering the intended sequence of events, and its strongest appeal is the combination of mood, mystery and mechanical twists. If you want a game whose primary purpose is infinite build refinement, Slay the Spire or Balatro is a better fit. If you want a deckbuilder that can unsettle you and make you solve something outside a battle, choose Inscryption.

Choose it when

  • You want psychological horror rather than a neutral fantasy backdrop.
  • You enjoy puzzles and environmental discovery between card battles.
  • You prefer a campaign with deliberate twists to a purely repeatable run loop.
  • You want atmosphere and secrets to matter as much as numerical efficiency.

4. Monster Train: the tactical lane-and-faction option

Monster Train is the recommendation when Vampire Crawlers has made you want more battlefield positioning. Instead of presenting combat as a single abstract exchange, it builds encounters around stacked train floors. You assemble combinations from multiple factions and decide how to distribute units and effects across the available lanes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it fits after Vampire Crawlers

The appeal is still run-based synergy building: you begin with a limited plan, make choices after each encounter, and try to turn faction tools into a coherent engine before the difficulty catches up. The extra spatial layer changes the question from “Which card should I play now?” to “Which floor should receive this unit, and how does that placement interact with the rest of my defense?”

That makes every powerful card a positioning problem. A strong unit in the wrong lane can be less useful than a weaker unit that protects a critical floor or creates a better chain of effects. Players who enjoy team composition, layered defenses and tactical trade-offs will find more to think about than in a strictly single-lane deckbuilder.

What feels different

The train-floor structure and faction system add complexity before you have even considered the individual cards. Runs can therefore feel more demanding to read at a glance. It is also less directly comparable to Vampire Crawlers’ dungeon presentation: the shared ground is the roguelike deckbuilding loop, not the setting or exact combat model.

Which game matches the part of Vampire Crawlers you liked?

If you liked building a dependable deck

Pick Slay the Spire. Its route, reward and relic decisions make deck quality the main subject. You will spend more time asking whether a card improves consistency, fills a defensive gap or supports a complete plan than chasing a single flashy interaction.

If you liked sudden power spikes

Pick Balatro. Its entire structure is built around transforming ordinary inputs into outsized scoring through modifiers. It is the most focused choice for players who enjoy finding a rule interaction and then seeing how far it can scale.

If you liked the dark mood and world

Pick Inscryption. It offers the most substantial atmosphere and the clearest reason to keep playing that is not simply improving a build. Expect puzzles, unsettling presentation and a story shaped around the card table.

If you liked tactical combat decisions

Pick Monster Train. Its floors and factions ask you to think about placement, composition and layered defense, making it the best fit for readers who want a board-state problem in addition to a deck problem.

How the four games compare on the main decision axes

Decision axis Slay the Spire Balatro Inscryption Monster Train
Classic deckbuilding emphasis Highest; deck consistency and route choices are central Medium; the deck supports poker-hand scoring and joker interactions Medium; cards serve a broader authored adventure High; deck and faction synergy drive repeated runs
Combo escalation High, but constrained by encounter planning and deck consistency Very high; modifier interactions are the main attraction Present, though atmosphere and progression share the spotlight High; faction combinations and floor effects can compound
Horror or narrative weight Low; the focus is systems and replayability Low; presentation supports score experimentation Highest; psychological horror, mystery and puzzles define the experience Low to medium; the tactical system is the main draw
Positioning and board tactics Limited; combat is primarily about card sequencing and resources Limited; the challenge is scoring and modifier management Focused on card encounters and puzzle context rather than broad battlefield lanes Highest; stacked floors and lane placement are defining decisions
Best reason to replay Different characters, routes, cards, items, encounters and events New scoring engines and increasingly ambitious modifier experiments Uncovering the authored experience and solving its mysteries Trying new faction combinations and improving multi-floor strategies

A practical order for playing them

If you are new to deck-building roguelikes, start with Slay the Spire. It presents the genre’s core vocabulary with the least distraction: route, reward, deck, relic, encounter and boss. Once you understand why a thin, consistent deck can outperform a larger pile of individually strong cards, the other games’ variations are easier to appreciate.

Move to Balatro when you want a faster, more experimental loop. Its poker framework gives every run an immediately recognizable objective, while the jokers provide the combinatorial depth.

Choose Inscryption next if you want a change of pace and a stronger narrative frame. It is best approached with as little advance information as possible because discovery is part of its design.

Save Monster Train for when you specifically want more tactical surface area. Its floors and factions reward careful attention to where effects land, so it is a natural step after you are comfortable evaluating a deck and a run at the same time.

Common mistakes when choosing your next deckbuilder

Expecting every game to reproduce Vampire Crawlers’ presentation

The recommendations share cards and repeated runs, not a common visual identity. Slay the Spire is the closest in structure, Balatro in escalation, Inscryption in dark atmosphere and Monster Train in tactical decision-making. Choose by the feature you want to preserve rather than by genre label alone.

Confusing a combo game with a traditional deckbuilder

A game can contain cards without making deck composition its primary challenge. Balatro is about scoring interactions, while Slay the Spire places more pressure on route planning, defensive coverage and long-term consistency. Decide whether you want to optimize a deck, discover a broken interaction or solve a tactical board before buying.

Adding complexity when you wanted a shorter session

Monster Train’s floors and factions create more decisions per battle. That is a benefit for players who want tactical depth, but it may feel like overhead if you only want a quick experiment. Balatro is the more natural choice for compact, repeatable sessions.

Choosing a story game when you want endless runs

Inscryption is the strongest narrative recommendation, but its authored structure serves a different purpose from an indefinitely repeatable deckbuilding sandbox. If long-term build experimentation is your priority, choose Slay the Spire, Balatro or Monster Train instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final recommendations by player type

  • The genre purist: Start with Slay the Spire; its four characters, 350-plus cards, 200-plus items, more than 50 combat encounters and more than 50 events provide the broadest traditional foundation of the four.
  • The combo inventor: Choose Balatro; its poker-hand framework and jokers make interaction discovery the central activity.
  • The horror player: Choose Inscryption; its card battles are part of an inky, puzzle-filled psychological-horror adventure.
  • The tactician: Choose Monster Train; stacked floors and faction combinations make placement and team composition fundamental.

For most players coming directly from Vampire Crawlers, Slay the Spire is the best first stop because it preserves the run-based deckbuilding decision loop without requiring you to learn an entirely different scoring language. If the memorable part was the explosive climb from a modest start to an unstoppable engine, go to Balatro instead. The other two are more specialized: Inscryption for mood and mystery, Monster Train for lanes and factions.
