Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is the closest match if what you want from Valor Mortis is rapid deflection, posture pressure and decisive finishers. If you specifically want a third-person camera, Lies of P is the strongest alternative because it keeps parrying central while adding weapon customization and a more traditional Soulslike structure. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty suits players who want deflection to create offensive momentum, Thymesia favors compact aggressive encounters, and Nine Sols translates the same timing-first idea into 2D action.
Valor Mortis is a first-person action Soulslike from One More Level and Lyrical Games, released on October 13, 2026. Its combat revolves around parries, dashes, visceral finishers, supernatural abilities and exploration through a plague-corrupted, alternate-history 19th-century Europe. The best substitute depends on which of those ingredients matters most to you.

What makes Valor Mortis different
A first-person Soulslike built around commitment
Many Soulslikes treat a parry as one defensive option among several. Valor Mortis puts it much closer to the center of the combat loop. The official Steam description says: “Each death is a chance to grow stronger. Master a combat system of parries, dashes, and visceral finishers across a variety of weapons.” That wording identifies the intended rhythm: read an attack, commit to a timed defense, create an opening, then convert it into a forceful finish rather than simply circling an enemy and trading ordinary hits.
The first-person view changes how that rhythm feels. You read threats from animation, sound and the position of a weapon entering the screen instead of watching your whole character from behind. That can make a successful parry more immediate, but it also means that a recommendation based only on genre labels can miss the point. A third-person game may reproduce the timing and stagger logic while feeling less intimate; a first-person action game may share the camera but not the posture-focused exchanges.

Parries, dashes and supernatural abilities work together
The game is not described as a pure duel simulator. Dashes give you a way to reposition or evade, finishers reward a successful opening, and supernatural abilities add another layer beyond conventional weapon attacks. Those systems make Valor Mortis broader than a single-button counter challenge. Look for an alternative according to the layer you value: Sekiro is the closest match for concentrated deflect-and-posture skill, while Lies of P is closer if weapon variety and build decisions are equally important.
Exploration and progression are part of the appeal
The setting combines 19th-century European imagery with an alternate history devastated by plague. Exploration is therefore not just a corridor between boss fights; it is part of the identity the game is selling. The death-and-growth premise also signals a progression loop in which failed attempts are expected to teach you something and make later attempts stronger. None of the alternatives reproduces every setting or camera choice, so the comparison below separates combat similarity from world and progression similarity.
Valor Mortis requirements and availability
The published minimum PC specification lists 16 GB of RAM, DirectX 12 and 50 GB of available storage. Those are minimum requirements, not a promise of a particular frame rate or image-quality setting. Check the complete store listing for the remaining processor and graphics-card requirements before buying or installing.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice — closest pure parry match
Why it matches
Sekiro is the clearest answer when “like Valor Mortis” means that defense should be an active skill test rather than a fallback. Its combat is organized around rapid deflections, aggressive pressure and an enemy posture gauge. When you keep an opponent under pressure and damage that posture, you earn a decisive critical attack instead of slowly reducing a large health bar. Boss encounters therefore become exchanges of rhythm: observe the cue, deflect on time, stay close enough to maintain pressure and take the execution opportunity when it appears.
That loop is more concentrated than Valor Mortis’s broader mix of dashes, supernatural abilities and weapon variety. You are not choosing Sekiro for a first-person view or extensive build crafting. You are choosing it because it makes timing, distance and composure the main progression system. Every failed attempt gives you information about an attack pattern, and every successful sequence demonstrates exactly why the posture model is so influential.

What you give up
The camera is third person, and the game is less about swapping between a large collection of weapon builds. If your favorite part of Valor Mortis is experimenting with supernatural powers or changing equipment to solve a problem, Lies of P or Wo Long may provide a better fit. If your priority is simply the most demanding deflect-and-posture loop, those differences are advantages rather than defects.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose Sekiro when
- You want parrying to determine the outcome of most major exchanges.
- You enjoy bosses that demand sustained pressure instead of passive blocking.
- You do not need first-person presentation or a broad menu of builds.
- You want a clear posture-to-critical-attack payoff.
Lies of P — best third-person alternative
Why it matches
Lies of P is the strongest recommendation for the reader who asks for “a third-person Valor Mortis.” It keeps timing-based defense central while presenting the action from behind the character, which makes enemy spacing, incoming animations and your own positioning easier to read at a glance. Its structure is recognizably Soulslike, so exploration, checkpoints, boss routes and deliberate resource management matter alongside the parry window.
The major distinction is customization. Weapon variety and weapon construction let you shape how a successful defense turns into damage. That gives you more room to adapt a loadout to your preferred reach, speed or damage pattern than a tightly focused deflection game. The result is a useful bridge for players who like the discipline of parrying but still want equipment choices to matter.
Timing and forgiveness
Compared with the most demanding posture-focused games, Lies of P is often perceived as a more forgiving-feeling entry point while keeping defensive timing important. That does not make parrying optional: blocking, learning attack delays and recognizing when a boss can be staggered remain essential. The practical difference is that you can approach an encounter through a mixture of defense, weapon selection and conventional Soulslike spacing instead of relying on one perfectly sustained deflection sequence.
What you give up
You lose Valor Mortis’s first-person immediacy and its plague-era alternate-history setting. The combat also feels more deliberate than the fastest deflection-led encounters. Choose it for the combination of third-person readability, parry-heavy melee and meaningful weapon customization, not as a literal replacement for supernatural first-person abilities.

Choose Lies of P when
- A third-person camera is a requirement.
- You want parrying and blocking without giving up weapon experimentation.
- You prefer a traditional Soulslike world structure.
- You want a gentler transition into timing-first defense than the strictest posture benchmark.
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty — deflection as offensive momentum
Why it matches
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty belongs on this list because deflection is not merely a way to avoid damage; it is the mechanism that keeps you attacking. A well-timed deflection changes the flow of an encounter, allowing you to answer an enemy’s initiative with your own. That makes the game a strong follow-up for anyone who enjoys the moment in Valor Mortis when a parry creates permission to dash in, use an ability or commit to a finisher.

The pace is more aggressive than a cautious shield-and-counter approach. You are encouraged to read attacks quickly, make a decision and remain engaged. This is especially attractive if you find that waiting for a safe opening drains the excitement from a Soulslike. Deflection gives you a reason to meet an attack rather than retreat from it.
How it differs
The match is about combat momentum, not camera or setting. It is third person, and its mission-oriented structure does not recreate the particular exploratory mood of a plague-corrupted European city. It also asks you to learn how its own status and equipment systems interact with deflection, so knowledge from Sekiro or Valor Mortis helps with timing but does not eliminate the need to learn the new rules.
Choose Wo Long when
- You want every successful defense to feed directly into your next attack.
- You prefer rapid exchanges to slow attrition.
- You like experimenting with equipment and combat approaches.
- You are comfortable learning a new momentum and status framework.
Thymesia — compact, aggressive parry play
Why it matches
Thymesia is a good choice when the appeal of Valor Mortis is intensity rather than scale. Its encounters are compact and aggressive, so the game spends less time asking you to cross a vast landscape and more time testing whether you can read an enemy, parry or interrupt the attack and capitalize immediately. That concentration makes it suitable for players who want a shorter route from attempt to attempt.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The combat identity is built around fast reactions and plague-themed abilities. Those abilities give the fights a distinct offensive texture while preserving the central demand: stay alert, recognize the opening and act before it disappears. If Valor Mortis’s supernatural powers interest you more than its large-scale exploration premise, this is the recommendation to investigate first.
Trade-offs
A compact game cannot provide the same breadth of exploration or the same sense of a long journey through a large alternate-history world. Its smaller scope is intentional. You get focused arenas and brisker decision cycles, but not a one-for-one substitute for first-person traversal, broad weapon presentation or the full setting of Valor Mortis.
Choose Thymesia when
- You want fast encounters with little downtime.
- You prefer aggressive counters to cautious endurance.
- You value plague-themed abilities but do not need a huge world.
- You want a concise alternative before committing to a longer Soulslike.
Nine Sols — a 2D interpretation of parry combat
Why it matches
Nine Sols demonstrates that parry-focused combat does not require a 3D camera. Its side-scrolling presentation changes the geometry of movement, but the central skill remains timing: recognize the incoming attack, meet it correctly and use the resulting opening to control the exchange. Because enemies approach within a readable horizontal space, the challenge shifts from full 3D positioning to precise rhythm, spacing and platforming awareness.

This makes it the best genre-bending option in the group. You retain the satisfaction of turning defense into offense, yet the surrounding level design, traversal and visual framing are fundamentally different from Valor Mortis. Players who want the exact first-person sensation should not start here; players who want the parry idea expressed in a new form may find it the most refreshing alternative.

Trade-offs
There is no third-person camera, no first-person weapon view and no equivalent to exploring a three-dimensional European setting. The value is conceptual rather than literal. Choose it because you enjoy a precise parry-centered action game and are willing to learn how that system behaves in a side-scrolling world.
Choose Nine Sols when
- You are happy to leave 3D Soulslike conventions behind.
- You want timing to remain the defining combat skill.
- You enjoy side-scrolling exploration and platforming context.
- You want a different camera to change, not dilute, the parry challenge.
Which game should you pick?
If parry purity is the deciding factor
Start with Sekiro. Its posture gauge and critical-attack payoff make the connection between a correct deflection and a decisive result unusually clear. It is the benchmark for the reader who wants to practice timing until it becomes the primary way they play.
If you require third person
Choose Lies of P. It is the closest third-person match for parry-heavy melee while adding weapon customization and a familiar Soulslike structure. Choose Wo Long instead if you want deflection to push you constantly into the next attack rather than supporting a slower, more measured build.
If you want shorter, faster sessions
Try Thymesia. Its compact scope places more emphasis on individual encounters and less on crossing a huge map. The game suits players who prefer repeated, aggressive tests over a long expedition.

If first person is non-negotiable
None of the listed alternatives is presented as a first-person equivalent. In that case, Valor Mortis remains the distinctive choice: its first-person framing, supernatural abilities, dashes and finishers are the combination the other games divide among themselves rather than reproduce wholesale.
How to adapt to a parry-focused game
1. Learn one attack family at a time
Do not try to memorize an entire boss immediately. Watch for one repeated strike, note the visual or audio cue that precedes it and practice the timing until the response is consistent. Parry systems reward recognition more than frantic reaction, so a small, reliable vocabulary of attacks is more useful than guessing at every animation.
2. Separate defense from retaliation
A successful parry is usually an opening, not an instruction to mash. Confirm that the enemy is actually staggered or exposed, then choose the appropriate counter, finisher or ability. This matters especially in games where posture damage accumulates through repeated pressure rather than collapsing after one perfect defense.
3. Use dashes and movement deliberately
In Valor Mortis, dashes sit beside parries as a named part of the combat loop. Treat them as a positioning tool: use one to leave an unsafe angle, close the distance after a miss or create space while you read the next attack. A dash used without a plan can move you out of the range needed to exploit a stagger.
4. Adjust to each game’s forgiveness
The same visual cue will not produce the same result in every title. Sekiro emphasizes rapid deflections; Lies of P combines parrying with blocking and customization; Wo Long ties deflection to momentum; Thymesia compresses the encounter; and Nine Sols changes the geometry entirely. Judge a game by its own timing window instead of assuming that muscle memory transfers perfectly.
5. Build around the way you create openings
If you enjoy staying close and maintaining pressure, prioritize the game whose systems reward repeated deflections. If you prefer to prepare a loadout, choose the title with more weapon or equipment decisions. The strongest alternative is the one whose progression reinforces your preferred way of turning a defensive success into damage.
Bottom line
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is the closest pure parry-focused alternative to Valor Mortis. Lies of P is the answer for a third-person camera and weapon customization. Choose Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty for deflection-driven momentum, Thymesia for compact aggression, and Nine Sols for a 2D version of timing-centered combat. Keep Valor Mortis itself in mind if first-person presentation, supernatural abilities, dashes and finishers are the features you do not want to compromise.
