Games like Total War: Shogun 2: the best historical strategy alternatives

If you want a game like Total War: Shogun 2, start by deciding which part you want to preserve: Sengoku-era Japan, hands-on battles, or a long campaign driven by politics and characters. Sengoku Jidai: Shadow of the Shogun is the closest setting match, but its battles are turn-based. Sengoku keeps 16th-century Japan while making clans, retainers and character management the center of play. Crusader Kings II moves to medieval Europe and gives up direct battlefield control for a deeper dynastic strategy experience.

The current official Shogun 2 package is Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition, available through Steam, the Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG. If you are replacing it rather than simply adding another strategy game, the comparison below shows exactly what changes with each alternative.

What makes Total War: Shogun 2 the benchmark?

Shogun 2 is unusually easy to use as a comparison point because its identity is tightly focused. GamesRadar describes it as a compact campaign centered on one island nation, with clear battlefield roles, competent political and warfare artificial intelligence, and distinctive Japanese castle sieges. Those traits create a specific blend rather than a generic “historical strategy” formula.

  • Focused scope: the campaign concentrates on Japan instead of asking you to manage a sprawling world map.
  • Readable warfare: unit roles are clear enough that a new player can understand why a line holds, breaks or needs support.
  • Two strategic layers: you manage provinces and armies on the campaign map, then fight engagements in real time.
  • Political pressure: warfare is connected to alliances, rival clans and the need to keep a campaign moving after a victory.
  • Castle assaults: sieges have a distinctly Japanese character and are one of the game’s most recognizable features.

An alternative can be close in one dimension and far away in another. A Japan-based title may replace real-time battles with turns; a medieval game may preserve political storytelling while abandoning the setting. Treat “like Shogun 2” as a choice among these trade-offs rather than a claim that any one game is a one-to-one substitute.

Best games like Total War: Shogun 2 at a glance

Game Setting Battle control Campaign focus Access or edition information
Total War: Shogun 2 Sengoku Japan Real-time battles alongside a turn-based campaign map Armies, provinces, clan warfare and political maneuvering The official package is Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition; SEGA lists Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG.
Sengoku Jidai: Shadow of the Shogun Sengoku-era Japan and the Japanese invasion of Korea Turn-based tactical battles and turn-based strategic play Tactical decisions within a historical campaign The official Steam listing identifies the game and its turn-based format; other edition details are not stated there.
Sengoku 16th-century Japan More campaign- and character-oriented; Total War-style battlefield control is not established by the cited description Clans, retainers and character-driven strategy Paradox’s official description identifies the setting and character-driven design; current storefront details are not stated.
Crusader Kings II Medieval Europe More abstract campaign resolution than Shogun 2’s direct real-time engagements Dynasties, politics, long campaigns and strategic or tactical depth Paradox describes it as a medieval grand-strategy experience; a current package or storefront is not stated in the cited description.

The table makes the central decision visible: only the first two games share the Sengoku setting, only Shogun 2 delivers its particular real-time battle-and-campaign combination, and Crusader Kings II is the strongest choice when dynastic politics matters more than Japanese warfare.

Sengoku Jidai: Shadow of the Shogun — the closest setting match

Choose Sengoku Jidai: Shadow of the Shogun when the historical subject is your first priority. Steam’s official listing calls it a “turn-based tactical and strategic game” set during Japan’s Sengoku era and the Japanese invasion of Korea. That places it in the same broad historical world as Shogun 2 while making a fundamental change to the rhythm of play.

What carries over from Shogun 2

  • Japanese historical context: you remain in the era of competing powers, shifting alliances and military campaigns associated with the Sengoku period.
  • A campaign-plus-battle structure: the official description explicitly covers both tactical and strategic play, so decisions occur at more than one level.
  • Room for deliberate planning: turn-based play gives you time to examine a position and commit to a plan instead of reacting continuously during a real-time engagement.

What changes

The battle rhythm is the decisive difference. Shogun 2’s appeal includes real-time engagements in which battlefield roles and timing matter as events unfold. Sengoku Jidai uses turns for its tactical layer, so it is a mechanical alternative rather than a one-to-one replacement. If you enjoy pausing to think, sequencing actions and treating every move as a discrete decision, that change may be an advantage. If you specifically want the pressure of live formations and simultaneous movement, it will feel less familiar.

Who should pick it?

  • Pick it if Sengoku-era history is more important than real-time combat.
  • Pick it if you prefer tactical decisions you can evaluate step by step.
  • Do not pick it solely because you want the same siege rhythm or battlefield interface as Shogun 2; the official description confirms a turn-based system instead.

In short, this is the best recommendation for the reader who says, “I want Japan and the period first; I can live with turns.”

Sengoku — Japan with a character-driven campaign

Paradox describes Sengoku in one sentence: “Sengoku is a deep character driven strategy game set in 16th century Japan.” That wording identifies its main appeal. Rather than leading with battlefield spectacle, it frames the period through the people and relationships who hold a clan together.

The campaign difference

In Shogun 2, characters and politics support a campaign whose visible center is the movement of armies across provinces. Sengoku reverses that emphasis. Clans, retainers and character management are the reason to stay with a campaign, and the historical setting supplies the pressure around those decisions.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Clans: the political unit is not just a color on a map; it is a group whose internal interests shape the campaign.
  • Retainers: individual people matter to the strategy, making personnel choices part of the game’s identity.
  • Character management: the campaign’s drama comes from developing and navigating a cast of historical-period figures.
  • Japan retained: you keep the 16th-century Japanese setting instead of moving to medieval Europe.

The battlefield caveat

Do not buy Sengoku expecting confirmed Total War-style battlefield control. Paradox’s cited description establishes a deep, character-driven strategy game, but it does not verify a Shogun 2-like real-time battle system. That makes Sengoku a setting-and-campaign alternative, not a guaranteed replacement for hands-on formations or castle assaults.

Who should pick it?

Sengoku is the better fit when you want the story of a clan and its people to develop over a long campaign. It is especially appropriate for players who find Shogun 2’s political layer interesting but wish it were the main event. If your favorite moments are issuing orders during a live battle, choose the comparison table’s other options with that limitation in mind.

Crusader Kings II — the medieval dynastic alternative

Crusader Kings II is the largest setting change on this list. Paradox presents it as a grand-strategy experience that brings medieval Europe to life with strategic and tactical depth. The attraction is not Japanese warfare; it is the ability to follow a dynasty through a long, politically complicated campaign.

What you gain

  • Dynastic continuity: the campaign is organized around a ruling family and its succession rather than a single short military objective.
  • Political storytelling: alliances, rivalries and inherited claims can matter as much as the size of an army.
  • Long-form strategy: the medieval setting supports campaigns where decisions accumulate over generations.
  • Strategic and tactical depth: Paradox explicitly emphasizes both, making this a substantial alternative for players who want more than a battle sandbox.

What you give up

You give up Sengoku Japan, Japanese castle sieges and Shogun 2’s direct real-time engagements. Crusader Kings II resolves more of the campaign at an abstract strategic level, so it does not reproduce the experience of personally positioning every formation in a live battle. The trade is a campaign whose central question is often “How does this dynasty survive and prosper?” rather than “How do I win this siege?”

Who should pick it?

Choose Crusader Kings II if your priority is politics, character relationships and a campaign that can outlast individual rulers. Choose one of the Japan-based games if the period and cultural setting are non-negotiable. This is the right recommendation for a Shogun 2 player who values the campaign map more than the battlefield map.

Choose by the part of Shogun 2 you want to keep

If you want Sengoku Japan above all else

Start with Sengoku Jidai: Shadow of the Shogun for its explicitly stated Sengoku setting and tactical-strategic structure. Consider Sengoku when you want the same broad period but a deeper focus on clans, retainers and characters.

If real-time battles are essential

None of the cited alternatives is confirmed as a direct replacement for Shogun 2’s real-time engagements. Sengoku Jidai is explicitly turn-based, Sengoku’s cited description does not establish Total War-style battles, and Crusader Kings II is oriented toward grand strategy with more abstract campaign resolution. Keep Shogun 2—or accept that you are changing the core battle system.

If you want a more character-focused campaign

Sengoku is the clearest match because its official description is explicitly character driven. Crusader Kings II is the stronger option when you want that idea expanded into dynasties and medieval political stories rather than kept in Japan.

If you want a larger political and dynastic arc

Crusader Kings II is the deliberate setting swap: medieval Europe instead of Japan, dynasties instead of clan warfare, and campaign-level strategy instead of direct real-time command.

If approachability matters

GamesRadar’s description of Shogun 2 highlights its smaller scope and obvious battlefield roles as relatively approachable qualities. Sengoku Jidai may be easier to evaluate tactically because turns let you consider each move, while character- and dynasty-driven systems can require more attention to relationships and succession. The cited descriptions do not provide a formal difficulty ranking, so treat this as a learning-style distinction rather than a claim that one title is objectively easier.

How to decide before you install

  1. Write down your non-negotiable: choose setting, real-time battles, or character politics. Trying to preserve all three will eliminate every alternative.
  2. Check the battle label: “turn-based tactical and strategic” means Sengoku Jidai will play differently from Shogun 2; “grand strategy” signals a campaign-first experience such as Crusader Kings II.
  3. Decide whether people or provinces are your main unit of interest: Sengoku and Crusader Kings II put more weight on characters, clans or dynasties, while Shogun 2’s benchmark is armies and provinces.
  4. Confirm the edition and storefront: for Shogun 2, look specifically for the official Complete Edition listing. The alternatives’ current package names and availability are not established by the cited descriptions, so verify those details on the relevant official storefront before purchasing.
  5. Set expectations for sieges: Shogun 2’s distinctive Japanese castle assaults are part of what makes it special. None of the supplied descriptions confirms an equivalent siege system in the alternatives.

Which game is the best alternative?

Sengoku Jidai: Shadow of the Shogun is the best overall recommendation for a player searching for another Sengoku-era strategy game, provided turn-based battles are acceptable. Sengoku is the best choice for a Japan-focused campaign built around clans, retainers and characters. Crusader Kings II is the best substitute for the political and long-campaign side of Shogun 2, even though its medieval setting and more abstract battle control are a major departure.

That leaves Shogun 2 itself as the only title in this group that combines the benchmark’s focused Japanese campaign, clear battlefield roles, political warfare and real-time castle sieges in one package. If those elements are all essential, the alternatives are complements rather than replacements; if one element matters most, the choices above let you trade the others knowingly.
