What The End of the Sun actually offers
The Xbox listing describes The End of the Sun as “a mystery-filled first-person adventure and exploration game set in a Slavic fantasy world.” You investigate an ancient land, form connections with bonfires and use fire to move between different points in time. The central mystery unfolds as you explore a village and discover how its people’s lives connect across past and future.
Its time system is part of both progression and storytelling. Rather than treating time as a background theme, the game lets you travel through it and make decisions that shape human destinies. The developer’s announcement also emphasizes a nonlinear narrative: you can uncover the village’s secrets at your own pace instead of following one strictly ordered chain of events.

The closest folklore match: Mundaun
Why it fits
Mundaun is the strongest recommendation when your priority is being in a first-person folkloric world. Like The End of the Sun, it uses direct exploration and a culturally rooted atmosphere rather than presenting its setting as generic fantasy. You examine places and move through a rural environment from the character’s perspective, which makes environmental details and local beliefs central to the experience.
What changes
The tone is the important difference. Mundaun is a horror adventure with a more immediate and sustained horror emphasis, while The End of the Sun is framed first as a mystery-filled adventure and exploration game. It does not provide the same past-and-future investigation or bonfire-based time travel. Pick it for folklore and first-person immersion, not as a mechanical substitute for the time system.

For time-based discovery: Outer Wilds
Why it fits
Outer Wilds is the best alternative when “time travel” means learning by revisiting the same situation. Its 22-minute time loop is the core exploration structure. Each cycle gives you another opportunity to observe, test a route, interpret a clue and use what you learned on the next attempt. Progress is based on knowledge rather than simply collecting stronger equipment.

- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
What changes
The setting is science fiction, not Slavic fantasy. There is no village folklore framework, magical map or bonfire relationship comparable to The End of the Sun. Its appeal is the logic of repeated investigation: if the part of The End of the Sun that attracts you is discovering how events fit together across time, this is the clearest match even though its world and tone are very different.
For survival systems and replayability: Saturnalia
Why it fits
Saturnalia combines Italian folklore with survival horror and roguelike mechanics. It is a useful choice if you want an atmosphere shaped by local tradition but also want resource pressure, risk management and reasons to replay. The systemic structure makes each run part of the experience instead of presenting one uninterrupted investigation.
What changes
The game is third-person, so it does not reproduce The End of the Sun’s close first-person viewpoint. Its defining structure is survival and replay rather than a nonlinear mystery in which fire carries you between historical moments. Choose it when managing scarcity and repeating attempts sounds more appealing than following a primarily exploratory village investigation.
For first-person psychological horror: Still Wakes the Deep
Why it fits
Still Wakes the Deep is a first-person psychological-horror adventure built around dread, environmental storytelling and cinematic presentation. It suits players who care about how a place feels: unsettling spaces, escalating danger and story information communicated through the environment rather than through exposition alone.

- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
What changes
It is not a folklore or time-travel game. Its recommendation is about viewpoint and atmosphere, not mythology or nonlinear investigation. If you want the supernatural unease of The End of the Sun but would trade Slavic culture and historical branching for a more concentrated horror presentation, it is a strong directional alternative.
For a compact thriller: Fort Solis
Why it fits
Fort Solis is a third-person psychological thriller on Xbox Series X|S. It is suited to readers who want a contained mystery led by mood, location and narrative tension. The appeal is a focused, atmosphere-first experience rather than a large folklore world or an extensive systemic structure.
What changes
It does not match the first-person perspective, Slavic setting or time travel. Treat it as a choice for the mystery impulse alone: a player who wants to investigate an unsettling place may enjoy it, while someone specifically seeking bonfires, historical eras or folklore should choose another game on this list.

An additional mood match: The Shore: Enhanced Edition
Xbox Wire describes The Shore: Enhanced Edition as an atmospheric, story-driven horror experience coming to Xbox Series X|S. It belongs on your shortlist if exploration and cosmic dread matter more than the precise folklore or time mechanics of The End of the Sun.

The available description does not establish a comparable viewpoint, time system or replay structure. That makes it a secondary recommendation: use it to extend the mood spectrum toward cosmic horror, not to fill the same mechanical role as The End of the Sun.

You want Slavic or culturally rooted folklore
Start with The End of the Sun itself, then try Mundaun for a different folklore tradition presented through first-person horror. Saturnalia is the alternative if Italian folklore and survival systems appeal to you. Neither reproduces the exact Slavic setting.
You want first-person exploration
Mundaun, Outer Wilds and Still Wakes the Deep all keep the camera in first person, but they serve different purposes. Choose Mundaun for folklore, Outer Wilds for investigation driven by a time loop, and Still Wakes the Deep for cinematic psychological horror.

The End of the Sun is the direct choice because it lets you travel between past and future and make decisions that shape destinies. Outer Wilds is the nearest alternative in structure, using a repeating 22-minute cycle that turns knowledge into progress. The other games listed here do not have an equivalent time-based investigation system in the available descriptions.

You want the strongest horror experience
Choose Still Wakes the Deep for psychological dread and cinematic environmental storytelling, Mundaun for folklore-led horror, or Saturnalia for survival pressure. Fort Solis is better described as a psychological thriller, while The End of the Sun places mystery and exploration ahead of a purely horror-led structure.
You want replayability rather than one unfolding story
Saturnalia is the clearest fit because its roguelike mechanics and survival design support repeated runs. Outer Wilds also asks you to revisit situations, but its loop is designed around accumulating understanding rather than restarting a survival run. The End of the Sun’s nonlinear design gives you freedom in discovery, which is different from procedural replay.
Xbox Series X|S release and availability
The developer’s Xbox announcement gives November 4, 2026 as The End of the Sun’s Xbox Series X|S release date. The announced price is $24.99, €23.99 or £18.74. Those figures are regional store prices and can change with taxes, currency conversion, discounts or local availability, so check the Xbox listing for your account’s region when purchasing.
The game is described as optimized for Xbox Series X|S. The available announcement does not state a frame-rate target, resolution modes, download size, HDR support or Smart Delivery details. Do not assume those specifications until Microsoft or the developer lists them for your region and edition.
No verified Game Pass status is established in the available information. If subscription access matters to your decision, confirm the current store and Game Pass listings immediately before release and again after launch.
What is not established yet
The available official descriptions do not provide named sales figures, independent survey results, a confirmed physical Xbox edition, a soundtrack, a guidebook or an art book. They also do not establish a detailed combat system, difficulty options, completion time or accessibility feature list. Those omissions do not indicate that the features are absent; they mean they should not be treated as confirmed specifications.
For a purchase decision, use the feature distinctions that are documented: first-person exploration, Slavic fantasy, magical-map navigation, bonfire connections, travel between past and future and nonlinear choices. Then select a comparison game according to the single feature you are willing to compromise.
