The best game to play after Swarm Me depends on which part of its formula you want to keep. Choose Vampire Survivors for approachable automated builds, 20 Minutes Till Dawn for direct aiming, Brotato for compact high-speed runs, Yet Another Zombie Survivors for squad control, They Are Billions for a full base-building strategy layer, or The Last Spell for deliberate, turn-based defense.
Swarm Me is a minimalist horde-survival arena from KBGS. You kite an endless drone swarm, lure enemies into traps and environmental hazards, improve your defenses, deploy special items, and try to survive as the pressure intensifies. That makes it closer to a movement-and-positioning survival shooter than to a conventional tower-defense game.

What makes Swarm Me distinctive?
Swarm Me launched on Steam on March 11, 2026, with KBGS listed as both developer and publisher. The store description presents a compact loop: evade an endless swarm of drones, bait it into deadly traps, upgrade defenses, use special items, and survive for as long as possible. The launch announcement likewise emphasizes outmaneuvering enemies with traps and environmental hazards rather than depending only on weapons.

Movement is the primary resource
The defining decision is where you stand and where you lead the horde. Kiting creates distance, baiting turns enemy pursuit into a weapon, and positioning determines whether a trap catches a few drones or an entire threatening cluster. A run therefore asks for constant spatial judgment instead of only asking whether your damage numbers are high enough.

It is a survival shooter, not a traditional tower defense
The game is tagged as a top-down shooter, twin-stick shooter, bullet hell, survival, action roguelike, and roguelite. Those labels explain the feel: you control a character in an arena, react to incoming bodies and projectiles, and make run-based upgrade decisions. Defenses and traps matter, but you are not mainly building a fixed base and waiting for scheduled attacks.
The pressure keeps rising
The official description says the swarm becomes denser, faster, and deadlier. This continuous escalation changes the value of every decision. A route that is safe early may become a funnel later; a trap that buys time at the start may need to be combined with movement, upgrades, or a special item once the horde thickens.
Why a controller makes sense
Steam recommends controller play for Swarm Me. Twin-stick movement and aiming are naturally suited to two analog sticks, especially when you need to steer through a narrow gap while directing attacks or preparing a trap. A PC gaming controller is therefore a task-enabling accessory for this particular game, not merely a comfort option.
At-a-glance comparison
| Game | Control emphasis | Pressure pattern | Strategic layer | Typical run or campaign shape | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Swarm Me | Twin-stick movement, kiting, trap placement | Endless swarm that grows denser, faster, and deadlier | Positioning, baiting, defenses, special items | Arcade-style survival runs | Players who want traps and environmental hazards at the center of a horde shooter |
| Vampire Survivors | Movement and positioning; attacks are largely automated | Escalating enemy density during a run | Weapon evolution and build experimentation | Short, repeatable survivor-like runs with persistent experimentation | Accessible automated combat |
| 20 Minutes Till Dawn | Direct aiming and movement | Dense timed waves | Character, weapon, and upgrade combinations | Compact runs built around a fixed survival window | Players who want manual shooting with deeper build choices |
| Brotato | Fast arena movement with rapid upgrade decisions | Discrete waves and increasingly demanding encounters | Loadout construction and highly distinct character builds | Very short, replayable runs | Players who value speed and immediate restartability |
| Yet Another Zombie Survivors | Survivor-style movement plus squad composition | Escalating zombie pressure | Combining character roles and team upgrades | Run-based progression centered on a small squad | Players who want more than one controllable role on the field |
| They Are Billions | Real-time strategy commands | Scheduled zombie assaults and expanding map pressure | Base construction, economy, technology, and defenses | Campaign-scale strategy rather than a single arena run | Players who mean “horde management” literally: build, supply, and defend a settlement |
| The Last Spell | Turn-based hero orders | Planned undead waves | Hero management, city defense, and tactical positioning | Deliberate missions linked by longer-term progression | Strategy-first players who want time to plan each defense |
The best alternatives, explained
Vampire Survivors: the easiest transition into survivor-like play
Pick Vampire Survivors if the part you enjoy most is watching a modest setup become a screen-clearing build while enemy numbers rise around you. Its accessible structure puts less emphasis on manually aiming every shot and more on movement, collecting upgrades, and deciding which combinations to develop.
That makes it a good alternative when you like the escalating-density side of Swarm Me but do not require traps or twin-stick marksmanship. You still read the arena, choose safer routes, and make consequential choices during a run, but the combat workload is different: your build handles much of the attacking while you concentrate on survival and upgrade timing.
Choose it over Swarm Me when you want a gentler entry point, highly legible run progression, and room to experiment with many build directions. Do not choose it expecting the same bait-and-trap puzzle. The appeal is automated power growth and the way each run teaches you which combinations can handle a thicker crowd.
20 Minutes Till Dawn: direct aim and deliberate builds
20 Minutes Till Dawn is the closest recommendation for readers who want to keep manual shooting in the foreground. You aim directly, move through dense enemy formations, and shape a run through character, weapon, and upgrade choices. The result preserves the pressure of a survival arena while making your trigger direction a central input.

It suits players who found Swarm Me compelling because every approach angle matters, but who want more deliberate control over where damage goes. The distinction is important: Swarm Me highlights baiting enemies into hazards, while this alternative puts more weight on constructing a damage plan and executing it with direct aim.
Select it if you enjoy refining a build over repeated attempts and want to feel the difference between a weak early setup and a coherent late-run combination. It is less suitable if environmental traps are the specific feature you are seeking.
Brotato: short runs and rapid decisions
Brotato is the strongest match for players who want the shortest path from starting a run to making meaningful upgrade decisions. Its arena format is built around quick encounters, frequent choices, and highly distinct build identities. You can restart rapidly, test a different approach, and learn from the result without committing to a long campaign session.
The trade-off is tempo. Swarm Me asks you to manage space and manipulate a pursuing swarm; Brotato emphasizes fast adaptation to successive waves and the consequences of your loadout decisions. The strategic question becomes what to buy, combine, or prioritize between encounters rather than how to turn a specific environmental hazard against the horde.
Choose Brotato for high replay value, compact sessions, and a build system that makes each character feel meaningfully different. It is a weaker substitute if your favorite moment in Swarm Me is leading enemies into a trap at exactly the right time.
Yet Another Zombie Survivors: add squad management to the formula
Yet Another Zombie Survivors keeps the survivor-style pressure but adds a small-squad perspective. Instead of thinking only about one avatar’s movement and upgrades, you consider how different character roles work together and how the team develops during a run.
This is the right direction if you like watching a formation handle a crowd and want more composition decisions than a single-character arena provides. The additional layer changes your attention: positioning still matters, but so does building a complementary group whose combined roles can answer the threats arriving in later stages.

It is not a one-to-one replacement for Swarm Me. The latter is specifically about kiting, baiting, traps, and environmental hazards. The squad alternative is better when your idea of horde management includes assigning roles and assembling a team. Choose it when you want survivor mechanics with a broader view of the battlefield.
They Are Billions: when “horde management” means a real-time strategy game
They Are Billions belongs in a separate strategic branch. It is not another single-arena twin-stick shooter; it is a much broader real-time strategy game built around expanding a settlement, managing an economy, constructing defenses, and preparing for zombie assaults.
The shift in scale changes every decision. In Swarm Me, you personally kite a swarm and exploit hazards within an arena. In They Are Billions, you decide where to place infrastructure, how to protect production, when to expand, and how to turn a settlement into a defensible system before an assault arrives. The pressure is scheduled and operational rather than an endless stream chasing one character.
Choose this alternative if the word “strategy” matters as much as “horde.” It rewards planning supply, territory, defensive lines, and the timing of expansion. Avoid it if you specifically want a short run, twin-stick controls, or immediate trap manipulation; those are not its central design goals.
The Last Spell: deliberate defense with turn-based control
The Last Spell is the strategy-first alternative for players who want time to examine a threat and issue considered orders. Its structure combines hero management, city defense, and planned undead waves in a turn-based format. You are not continuously steering through a live bullet-hell arena; you are arranging a defense and deciding how each hero contributes before the next phase unfolds.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThat makes it a strong choice when the satisfying part of Swarm Me is defensive preparation rather than reflexive movement. You can think about positions, targets, roles, and the condition of the defensive line without the same real-time execution burden.
Pick it for tactical planning and longer-term hero development. It will feel too slow if what you want is the immediate controller-driven flow of kiting drones through hazards. The games share escalating undead-or-horde pressure, but their decision clocks are fundamentally different.

Choose by the feature you want to preserve
If you want traps and environmental manipulation
Start with Swarm Me itself, because traps and environmental hazards are its clearest point of distinction. Among the alternatives, none in this list is presented as a direct substitute for that exact bait-and-hazard loop. If you move to another title, expect to exchange environmental manipulation for automated attacks, weapon builds, squad roles, or base defenses.
If you want manual aiming
Choose 20 Minutes Till Dawn for the most direct continuation of aim-and-move play. A controller remains useful for this style because analog movement and aiming let you make small corrections while a crowd closes in.
If you want less aiming and more build experimentation
Choose Vampire Survivors. Its automated-attack structure lets you concentrate on routing, upgrades, and the interaction between your selected tools rather than tracking every target yourself.
If you want the shortest sessions
Choose Brotato. Its compact arena runs and rapid upgrade cadence make it easy to test an idea, finish or fail a run, and begin another without a large time commitment.
If you want to manage several characters
Choose Yet Another Zombie Survivors for a squad-centered interpretation of the survivor format. It adds team composition to the decisions that Swarm Me places on one character’s movement and positioning.
If you want construction and logistics
Choose They Are Billions. It is the clear option for settlement growth, economy, defensive infrastructure, and assaults that must be prepared for before they arrive.

How to decide before buying
- Identify your control preference. If you want two-stick movement and manual aim, favor Swarm Me or 20 Minutes Till Dawn. If you prefer movement plus automated attacks, Vampire Survivors is the cleaner fit. For orders rather than avatar control, look at They Are Billions or The Last Spell.
- Decide what “wave pressure” means to you. Continuous density escalation points toward the survivor-style games. Scheduled assaults point toward the strategy alternatives, where preparation happens before the attack.
- Choose your strategic distance. Arena positioning is the smallest scale, squad composition adds a team layer, and base-building or hero-defense games move the decision-making to a settlement or campaign level.
- Set a session-length expectation. Short repeatable runs favor Vampire Survivors, 20 Minutes Till Dawn, Brotato, and Yet Another Zombie Survivors. Campaign-scale expansion favors They Are Billions; mission-based tactical defense favors The Last Spell.
- Check current storefront details immediately before purchase. Prices, discounts, regional availability, review counts, and platform compatibility can change. The indexed Steam listing for Swarm Me showed four user reviews at the time it was captured, but that is a dated snapshot rather than a permanent rating or quality measure.
Controller and PC setup considerations
Because Steam recommends controller play for Swarm Me, a gamepad is the most relevant hardware choice for this audience. Use a controller when you want smooth analog kiting, rapid directional changes, and simultaneous movement and aim control. Keyboard and mouse may still be preferable to players who favor precise digital inputs, but the twin-stick design was explicitly presented with controller use in mind.
- Use analog movement for spacing. Small stick adjustments help you maintain a safe orbit around the swarm instead of making only full-speed directional changes.
- Keep aim and movement independent. The value of a twin-stick layout is being able to retreat while directing attacks or preparing to draw enemies toward a hazard.
- Test bindings before a serious run. Make sure movement, aim, trap or item activation, and any upgrade-confirmation inputs are comfortable before the arena becomes crowded.
- Use a wired or well-charged gamepad for long sessions. Losing input during an escalation is a hardware failure, not a strategic lesson.
These considerations apply most directly to Swarm Me and other manual-aim arena games. They matter less for automated-attack survivors and do not replace a mouse-and-keyboard interface for traditional real-time strategy.
Common mismatches to avoid
Expecting every survivor-like game to have traps
Tags such as survival, roguelite, bullet hell, and top-down shooter describe overlapping formats, not identical mechanics. Swarm Me stands out because traps, baiting, and environmental hazards are called out as central. A game can have dense waves and run-based upgrades while offering no equivalent hazard system.

They Are Billions is a strategic branch, not a one-to-one replacement. Its economy, construction, expansion, and scheduled assaults require a different commitment from an arena run. Select it for operational planning, not because its title happens to include a large enemy population.
Choosing automated attacks when you want to aim
Vampire Survivors is accessible partly because it reduces manual firing demands. If your enjoyment comes from directing every shot while threading through a swarm, 20 Minutes Till Dawn is the more appropriate alternative.
Confusing squad management with direct character control
Yet Another Zombie Survivors adds a team layer, which changes the source of complexity. It may satisfy a desire for more strategic decisions, but it will not reproduce the feeling of personally baiting a drone pack into a specific trap.
