Start with Sun Haven if you want the familiar Stardew Valley pattern of crops, crafting, relationships and town routines, but want magic, monsters and dungeons to take up a meaningful part of the calendar. Choose Moonstone Island for turn-based, card-based spirit battles; Core Keeper when exploration and bosses matter more than the farm; Rune Factory 5 for the most action-RPG-focused interpretation; and My Time at Sandrock for workshop production and rebuilding a settlement. Roots of Pacha is an excellent social-farming alternative, but it has no combat and therefore does not meet a must-fight brief.

1. Sun Haven: the closest Stardew-style upgrade for combat
Sun Haven preserves the loop most Stardew Valley players are seeking: plant crops, fish, mine, craft, complete quests, improve a home and build relationships with townspeople. Its difference is scale and fantasy. You can travel between multiple towns and biomes, gather resources that are specific to those environments, enter dungeons and fight monsters with magic-based, real-time combat.

That combination makes it the most direct answer to “Stardew Valley with more combat.” Farming remains useful rather than decorative: it funds and supports your town life while exploration supplies materials, quests and new threats. The added combat does not replace the life-sim calendar; it gives days outside the farm a stronger purpose.
What exploration looks like
- Multiple towns: Progress is not confined to one village, so travel and regional resources become part of ordinary play.
- Biomes: Different areas present their own materials and challenges, encouraging you to return with better equipment or abilities.
- Dungeons and monsters: Combat is a recurring activity, not a single story segment.
- Magic: Real-time, spell-oriented attacks make encounters feel more active than Stardew Valley’s straightforward weapon swings.
Who should pick it
Pick Sun Haven when you want relationships, crops and town life to remain central while combat becomes a regular pillar. Plarium lists its release date as January 25, 2021, and reported a 9/10 Steam rating on a 2025 guide page; that rating is a snapshot from that guide, not a permanent platform-wide score. The same guide describes it as balancing relaxation and adventure in a fantasy open world.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Moonstone Island: turn-based battles on floating islands
Moonstone Island changes the feel of combat more radically. Instead of real-time sword or spell fighting, you collect spirits and use them in turn-based, card-based encounters. Every battle is therefore a planning exercise: assemble a team, choose cards and manage the sequence of actions rather than relying on reflexes.
The surrounding life-sim still includes farming, crafting, fishing and exploration. Your home and daily routine sit among floating islands, so discovery is built into the premise rather than added as a late-game expansion. Finding new islands and spirits supplies both strategic options and a reason to leave the farm.
How it differs from Sun Haven
- Combat pace: Battles are deliberate and menu-driven, not real-time.
- Collection: Spirits are a central progression system, similar to building a roster for future encounters.
- World structure: Floating islands create a discovery-focused map instead of a set of conventional towns and dungeons.
- Life-sim emphasis: Farming and relationships remain important, but the battle system is more rules-heavy than Stardew Valley’s.
Plarium lists the release date as September 20, 2023, and reported an 80/100 Metacritic score plus a $19.99 Steam price on its 2025 guide page. Treat the price as a dated listing that can vary by region, sale and edition.

3. Core Keeper: choose this when the underground world is the main attraction
Core Keeper moves the farm loop underground. You mine, craft, build, automate production, grow food and fight through a procedurally generated world whose layout is discovered as you dig. Exploration is not a side activity between chores; it determines what resources, biomes, bosses and technology you can reach next.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.

Why it feels more exploration-heavy
- Procedural discovery: The underground map is generated for exploration, so routes and resource locations are not a fixed Stardew-style town layout.
- Boss progression: Major fights provide clear milestones and can unlock access to new parts of the world.
- Automation: Machines and production systems let a developed base keep working while you explore.
- Co-op: The game supports single-player and cooperative multiplayer, making mining and boss preparation a shared activity.
The trade-off is that farming and relationships have less of the spotlight than in Stardew Valley. Your base is a logistical headquarters as much as a home, and survival needs, equipment and cave routes shape the schedule.
Core Keeper reached version 1.0 on Windows and Linux on August 27, 2024. Console launches were reported for September 17, 2024. Those dates identify the 1.0 and reported console releases; platform availability and edition details can differ by storefront.
4. Rune Factory 5: the strongest action-RPG direction
Rune Factory 5 is the choice for readers who want the farming structure but expect combat to behave like a full action RPG. You cultivate land, build relationships and participate in town life, then move into RPG areas where real-time attacks, monsters and equipment progression take priority.

Compared with Sun Haven, the emphasis shifts further toward combat systems first. Farming is still a meaningful part of character and town progression, so it does not abandon the life-sim foundation, but the moment-to-moment play is more firmly an RPG adventure.

Best reasons to choose it
- You want real-time encounters rather than turn-based menus.
- You prefer a structured RPG adventure over a primarily open-ended farming sandbox.
- You want relationship and farm systems that directly support an action-oriented play loop.
5. My Time at Sandrock: workshop production and rebuilding a town
My Time at Sandrock is less a dungeon-farming game than a production-and-settlement game. You operate a workshop, accept commissions, gather materials and help rebuild a town. Exploration and combat support those projects, but crafting chains, machines and civic improvements are the core progression.
Choose it if “more than Stardew Valley” means a larger manufacturing system and a visible town-rebuilding arc. Choose another option if your priority is repeated dungeon runs or boss-hunting. Its action is tied closely to quests and workshop needs rather than serving as the central activity every day.
How its priorities compare
- More production: Machines and commissions create multi-step goals beyond planting and harvesting.
- More settlement focus: Your work changes a town that is being restored, not merely maintained.
- Moderate combat: Fights and exploration are present, but they support the workshop narrative.
6. Roots of Pacha: a good alternative only if combat is optional
Roots of Pacha is close to Stardew Valley in its emphasis on farming, festivals, romance, fishing and community development. It also includes caves and gathering areas, so there is exploration. The decisive limitation is that it has no combat. PC Gamer called it “definitely the closest life sim to Stardew Valley” in a 2026 description, but that closeness is exactly why it is a poor recommendation for anyone who considers fighting non-negotiable.
Pick it when you want a prehistoric setting and a strong social-farming routine without enemies, weapons or boss encounters. Do not pick it expecting caves to turn into combat zones.

If you want farming and relationships but no fighting
Choose Roots of Pacha, understanding that caves and gathering areas do not contain a combat system.
How the combat and exploration trade-offs work
More combat changes the daily rhythm. In Stardew Valley, a mine trip is one activity among many; in these alternatives, combat may determine which resources, regions or story milestones are available. Real-time systems reward movement, timing and equipment choices. Turn-based systems reward team construction and card selection. Survival systems add preparation, health management and base logistics.
Exploration also comes in distinct forms. Sun Haven offers authored towns, biomes and dungeons. Moonstone Island uses floating-island discovery and spirit collection. Core Keeper makes the map itself unpredictable through procedural generation. Rune Factory 5 uses conventional RPG zones, while My Time at Sandrock ties surrounding areas to commissions and rebuilding. These are not interchangeable definitions of “exploration,” so choose the structure you enjoy, not just the label.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA practical decision checklist
- Decide whether combat must be real-time. If yes, start with Sun Haven or Rune Factory 5; if no, consider Moonstone Island.
- Decide whether a fixed or procedural world appeals to you. Pick authored towns and dungeons in Sun Haven, or procedural underground discovery in Core Keeper.
- Set your farming requirement. For the strongest farming-and-relationship retention, favor Sun Haven, Rune Factory 5 or Roots of Pacha; expect a smaller share of that loop in Core Keeper and My Time at Sandrock.
- Choose your social format. For cooperative exploration, Core Keeper explicitly supports single-player and co-op. For a primarily solo life-sim routine, the other choices center on their individual town and progression systems.
- Check platform and price at purchase. Release dates, storefront prices, editions and console availability vary by region and can change after launch.
Bottom line
Sun Haven is the safest first recommendation for “Stardew Valley with more combat and exploration.” It adds real-time magic, monsters, dungeons, multiple towns and biome-specific challenges without discarding crops, crafting, quests or relationships. Move to Moonstone Island for strategic spirit battles, Core Keeper for an underground exploration-and-boss campaign, Rune Factory 5 for a stronger action-RPG identity, or My Time at Sandrock for workshop-led town rebuilding. Choose Roots of Pacha only when combat is not part of the requirement.
