Games Like Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind for Fans of Tribal Strategy and Myth

King of Dragon Pass is the closest game to Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind: it combines clan leadership, resource pressure, diplomacy, mythology and decisions that shape a long campaign. For a direct continuation, choose Six Ages 2: Lights Going Out. If you want to create your own Gloranthan stories with friends instead of managing a computer-controlled clan, choose the RuneQuest tabletop role-playing game.

What makes Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind unusual

Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind is not simply a 4X game with a fantasy setting, and it is not a conventional choice-based adventure. Its official Steam description calls it a “storybook strategy game” set in Glorantha, the same world as King of Dragon Pass. You guide a clan through survival, alliances and conflict while short incidents accumulate into a multi-generational history.

The game contains more than 400 interactive story scenes. A decision that appears minor can alter relationships, resources, religious obligations or future events, and some consequences remain hidden for decades. The App Store describes the structure as interactive stories combined with turn-based strategy: each season or year involves choices about pastures, exploration, trade, raiding, diplomacy and journeys to the Otherworld.

That mixture creates five expectations for anyone searching for a similar game:

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Gloranthan continuity: familiarity with the setting, its cultures and its supernatural powers.
  • Community management: decisions affect a clan or tribe rather than a single hero.
  • Branching narrative: events are authored, but the order, consequences and eventual ending depend on your choices.
  • Active mythology: gods, spirits and ritual obligations are practical parts of strategy.
  • A long campaign: the meaningful unit is a generation or a community’s history, not one battle.

The recommendations below are ordered by how many of those expectations they satisfy, not by graphics, sales or review scores.

1. King of Dragon Pass: the closest overall match

King of Dragon Pass is the natural first recommendation because Six Ages is described by its Steam listing as its spiritual successor. Both are set in Glorantha, ask you to lead a community through scarcity and political danger, and present mythic decisions through compact, readable events rather than through a conventional tactical battlefield.

You will recognize the central rhythm: weigh advice from members of the clan, decide how to use limited resources, negotiate with neighboring groups, respond to raids or opportunities, and live with the consequences. The shared setting also matters. Gods and traditions are not decorative lore; they influence what your people consider acceptable, which alliances are possible and how you interpret apparently inexplicable events.

Why it fits

  • Same world: it is the most direct route back into Glorantha.
  • Comparable scale: the focus is clan and tribe leadership rather than an individual adventurer.
  • Similar narrative texture: short incidents build into a history whose shape is difficult to predict at the beginning.
  • Comparable strategic pressure: diplomacy, production, security and religious choices compete for attention.

Where it differs

It is a separate campaign rather than a continuation of your Six Ages clan. The exact balance of systems, event pool and campaign presentation is not established by the cited Steam description, so it is safer to expect a related design philosophy than an identical interface or identical story structure. Choose it when you want another self-contained clan saga in the same mythology, not when you need your existing save or characters to carry over.

2. Six Ages 2: Lights Going Out: the direct continuation

If what you liked was the specific combination of authored scenes, turn-based community decisions and Gloranthan religion, the second Six Ages game is the least disruptive recommendation. The App Store description presents it as the continuation available after completing Ride Like the Wind. It keeps the same broad approach to choice-driven strategy while moving the story into a later era.

Why choose it after the first game

The appeal is continuity of design rather than a new genre experiment. You remain in a setting where diplomacy, exploration, trade, raiding and supernatural dealings are connected. The later-era premise gives the sequel room to pose different historical pressures without abandoning the storybook format.

What to check before buying

  • Campaign relationship: the App Store identifies it as a follow-on to Ride Like the Wind; check the store description for the edition and device you plan to use.
  • Desired novelty: this is the right pick if you want more of the same developers’ approach, not a mechanically unrelated strategy game.
  • Setting expectations: it is a later-era Gloranthan story, so continuity of mythology does not mean the same historical situation.

The available official description does not establish a like-for-like scene count, difficulty list or platform feature comparison with the first game. Treat those details as edition-specific rather than assuming that every number from the original carries over.

3. RuneQuest: a tabletop route into Glorantha

RuneQuest is the best choice when the part you want to preserve is Gloranthan myth and player-driven consequence, but you would rather invent events with a group than follow a computer-authored event deck. The Steam description for Six Ages names RuneQuest among the other rich narrative experiences set in Glorantha.

How the experience changes

Dimension Six Ages RuneQuest
Format Solo computer game Collaborative tabletop role-playing
Story source Authored interactive scenes whose consequences branch over a campaign Stories created by players and a game master
Primary responsibility Manage a clan’s resources, relationships and decisions Play individual characters within a shared Gloranthan campaign
Myth and religion Systems and events present supernatural choices through the game’s rules Interpreted and enacted by the group during play
Availability details Digital store listings provide the relevant edition information Current core-book edition, price and retailer availability are not stated in the cited material

This is not a one-to-one replacement. RuneQuest offers deeper player authorship and social play, while Six Ages provides the convenience of a solo campaign with a defined event structure and built-in resource management. Pick the tabletop route if creating the story is more important than receiving a carefully authored sequence of scenes.

How the three choices compare

The following frame separates the qualities readers usually mean by “a game like Six Ages.” “Closest” means the experience remains most similar on that axis; it does not imply that every product has the same rules.

Axis King of Dragon Pass Six Ages 2: Lights Going Out RuneQuest
Continuity with Glorantha Same world and a related clan-management lineage Direct continuation in a later era Gloranthan tabletop setting
Clan or community management High; clan and tribe leadership are central High; follows the same broad choice-driven strategy approach Not the primary format; the group normally manages characters and a campaign
Branching narrative choices High; short events accumulate into a campaign history High; continuation of the interactive-story structure Potentially very high, but depends on the game master and players
Role of gods, spirits and myth Central to the setting and decisions Central to the continuing Gloranthan story Central setting material interpreted during play
Solo versus collaborative play Solo computer play Solo computer play Collaborative tabletop play
Best reason to choose it Maximum similarity without replaying the same campaign Continue with the same design approach Create original stories with other people

Choose by the feature you care about most

You want the same kind of clan leadership

Start with King of Dragon Pass. Its connection to Six Ages is explicit, and the shared focus on clan survival, diplomacy and myth makes it the strongest substitute when management is the reason you stayed with the original.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want more of the same storybook structure

Choose Six Ages 2: Lights Going Out. It preserves the developers’ emphasis on interactive scenes and consequential decisions while advancing the setting’s history. This is the least likely option to feel like a genre change.

You want consequences that are created by people at the table

Choose RuneQuest. A game master can turn a player’s interpretation of a god, oath or clan obligation into a new plot rather than selecting from a programmed branch. The trade-off is preparation, a group schedule and the absence of a fixed solo campaign.

You want the supernatural to affect practical decisions

All three recommendations can satisfy that interest, but in different ways. The two computer games encode religion, spirits and myth in their event and management systems. RuneQuest leaves more interpretation to the group, so the result depends on how the campaign handles rituals, beliefs and divine relationships.

Other Gloranthan names you may encounter

The official Steam description also mentions HeroQuest and God Wars as experiences set in Glorantha. They are useful leads if you want to explore the wider setting, but the cited material does not provide enough current product detail to rank either above the three recommendations here. Their inclusion should be read as a direction for further investigation, not as a claim that they match Six Ages feature for feature.

Edition, date and availability notes

The Steam listing gives Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind a release date of October 17, 2019. The Apple App Store listing records a launch date of June 28, 2018; those dates refer to different storefront histories, so they should not be treated as contradictory evidence of one universal release date.

Store pages can differ by operating system, region and edition. Confirm the platform, supported device, language and current purchase terms on the storefront you intend to use. No current price, edition number or retailer availability for the RuneQuest core rulebook is established by the cited information, so do not assume a particular edition or price when planning a tabletop campaign.

A practical decision path

  1. Decide whether you need a computer game. If you want solo play with built-in resource systems, stay with the two Six Ages titles or King of Dragon Pass. If you want a group activity, investigate RuneQuest.
  2. Choose continuity or a parallel story. Select Six Ages 2 for a later chapter after Ride Like the Wind; select King of Dragon Pass for another clan saga in the same world.
  3. Prioritize authored events or player authorship. The computer games provide designed scenes and hidden long-term consequences. The tabletop game lets the group determine what happens, with less predictable consistency from one campaign to another.
  4. Verify the edition before purchase. Use the relevant store or publisher listing to check platform and edition information, especially for the tabletop rulebook, whose current version and price are not established here.

Bottom line for different readers

King of Dragon Pass is the recommendation for the closest overall experience: clan management, diplomacy, mythology and a campaign history shaped by difficult choices. Six Ages 2: Lights Going Out is the obvious next step when you want the same developers’ story-driven strategy in a later Gloranthan era. RuneQuest is the right extension when the mythology matters more than solo software and you want friends to help author the consequences. HeroQuest and God Wars belong on a broader Glorantha reading list, but the available official descriptions do not support placing them ahead of those three choices.
