If you want a game you can play now that points toward Phantom Blade Zero’s fast, stylish sword combat, start with Devil May Cry 5 for expressive combos and Ninja Gaiden for relentless speed and technical depth. Add Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice if precise deflections are your priority, or Black Myth: Wukong for a broader wuxia-adjacent action-RPG experience.

Phantom Blade Zero is still upcoming. S-GAME and PlayStation announce October 29, 2026, while the Steam listing displayed October 28 when checked. Confirm the date in your regional storefront before buying or scheduling time to play.

What Phantom Blade Zero is—and what “games like it” should mean

Phantom Blade Zero is an upcoming single-player action game from S-GAME. The studio describes it as a spiritual rebirth of its earlier Rainblood and Phantom Blade work, with a visual identity it calls Kungfupunk: wuxia and Chinese martial-arts influences mixed with punk attitude and dark fantasy. It is built in Unreal Engine 5.

You play Soul, an elite assassin framed for killing the Order’s patriarch. A makeshift cure gives him only 66 days to uncover the truth. That premise explains the game’s emphasis on lethal encounters, conspiracies and a world that is stylized rather than historically realistic.

Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition - PlayStation 5
  • Blood burns with a blue Flame as Vergil joins the fight!
  • Powered up for the next-generation of gaming Hardware.
  • New gameplay modes Made possible by the increased processing power
  • Includes additional content released separately from the original version

The game is not presented as one enormous continuous open world. S-GAME has described a semi-open structure made of several reasonably sized, handcrafted maps. PlayStation’s product information also lists side quests, upgrades, accessories, summons, adjustable difficulty, offline pausing and manual saving.

Because Phantom Blade Zero has not released at the time of writing, comparisons are about the qualities shown or described by its creators—not a claim that any existing game is identical. The most useful questions are: Do you want rapid combo expression, demanding defensive timing, wuxia-adjacent atmosphere, or a more flexible mission structure?

The best games like Phantom Blade Zero at a glance

Game Best match for How it differs Why it belongs here
Devil May Cry 5 Huge move sets, rapid combos and stylish execution More arcade-like and character-driven; its combat rewards improvisation rather than a primarily weapon-switching assassin fantasy S-GAME’s Soulframe Liang explicitly cites Devil May Cry as an example of exhilarating, fast-paced hack-and-slash design
Ninja Gaiden Relentless speed, demanding enemies and technical melee Usually harsher and more pressure-focused, with less emphasis on a semi-open map structure Liang names Ninja Gaiden alongside Devil May Cry when describing the pace and breadth of moves the team admires
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Readable duels, parries and precise timing Its combat is centered on posture and deflection, not a broad style-switching arsenal A useful comparison for players who value counters and disciplined sword exchanges
Black Myth: Wukong Wuxia-adjacent action-RPG atmosphere and cinematic boss fights Broader action-RPG pacing and structure; its combat should not be treated as identical to Phantom Blade Zero A GamesRadar preview writer compared Phantom Blade Zero’s direction and stakes with Black Myth: Wukong while describing the new game as less Souls-like

1. Devil May Cry 5: the closest fit for stylish combo expression

Choose Devil May Cry 5 if the phrase “fast, stylish sword combat” means chaining attacks, changing direction in mid-combo and turning every encounter into a performance. Its combat is built around a large vocabulary of attacks and the freedom to combine them rather than simply selecting the safest strike.

This is not a claim that Phantom Blade Zero copies its systems. It is the clearest comparison because S-GAME itself uses Devil May Cry as a reference point. In a May 24, 2023 PlayStation Blog overview, S-GAME founder and CEO Soulframe Liang wrote that “Stellar titles like Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden are insanely exhilarating with their huge arsenal of moves and lightning-fast pace.”

What you will practice

  • Maintaining pressure while avoiding damage instead of waiting passively for a turn.
  • Using launchers, aerial attacks, cancels and movement to keep combos expressive.
  • Learning a character’s move properties well enough to improvise against different enemy types.
  • Improving your style and consistency, not merely reaching the end of a level.

Devil May Cry 5 is the strongest recommendation for players who want to develop a personal combat style. It is less useful if your priority is a grounded, timing-first duel system or a map-based action-RPG loop.

Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition (PS5)
  • Wield the Yamato: Take the stylish action to a new level as Vergil, Dante's long-time rival and twin brother. DmC5 players on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC will also be able to access all Vergil content in the playable character: Vergil DLC at a later date
  • New Gameplay Modes: Test your skills against the unique challenges of the new legendary dark Knight mode and Turbo mode. Legendary dark Knight mode: fans seeking an added challenge can Pit their skills and style against a crazy amount of enemies in the perilous legendary dark Knight mode
  • Ascend the Bloody Palace: Tackle the increasingly difficult floors of the bloody palace challenge mode, originally introduced as free post-launch content for Devil May Cry 5. Only the most skilled demon hunters will make it to the top floor to face the ultimate challenge
  • High-Octane Stylized Action: Play as four different characters: Nero, Dante, V, and the newly-added Vergil. Cut a path through the ruins of redgrave city with each character using radically different play styles as they take on the teaming hordes of demons
  • Groundbreaking Graphics: Developed with Capcom in-house proprietary RE engine, DMC5SE brings the visual quality to new heights, with graphics that utilize photorealistic character designs, stunning lighting and environmental effects

2. Ninja Gaiden: speed, danger and technical melee

Ninja Gaiden is the better choice when “fast” means enemies attack aggressively, openings are brief and survival depends on decisiveness. The series has long been associated with rapid movement, demanding encounters and a wide set of attacks that reward knowing when to commit.

Its inclusion is also directly supported by S-GAME’s own description. Liang places Ninja Gaiden beside Devil May Cry as an example of exhilarating hack-and-slash action with a large arsenal and lightning-fast pace. That makes it a more defensible Phantom Blade Zero comparison than simply listing every game with a sword.

How its appeal differs from Devil May Cry 5

Devil May Cry 5 often invites experimentation and theatrical expression. Ninja Gaiden tends to make the same creativity feel more urgent because enemies can punish hesitation quickly. If you enjoy learning spacing, prioritizing threats and converting a small opening into a decisive sequence, Ninja Gaiden should be near the top of your list.

Expect a different structure from Phantom Blade Zero’s described semi-open maps. Ninja Gaiden is valuable here for combat feel—speed, danger and move density—not as a one-to-one model for exploration or progression.

3. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice: choose it for deflections and readable duels

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is the recommendation for players who care more about timing than about collecting a huge catalog of attacks. Its central rhythm is to read an opponent, deflect at the right moment, maintain pressure and break posture. Fights can feel like precise exchanges rather than extended combo demonstrations.

Sekiro is an editorial comparison axis, not a source-verified statement that S-GAME names it as an inspiration. The useful connection is defensive discipline: if the most appealing Phantom Blade Zero footage shows counters, close-range reactions and sharp swordplay, Sekiro offers a demanding way to practice that kind of attention now.

Who should pick Sekiro

  • Players who prefer one highly developed core combat language over many character styles.
  • Anyone who enjoys learning boss attack patterns and responding on a tight beat.
  • People who want sword fights that reward staying close and contesting initiative.

Do not buy Sekiro expecting Phantom Blade Zero’s arsenal, accessories or side-quest structure. Its value as an alternative is the quality of its timing-based duels.

4. Black Myth: Wukong: a broader wuxia-adjacent action-RPG comparison

Black Myth: Wukong makes sense if the appeal of Phantom Blade Zero includes Chinese-inspired fantasy, dramatic bosses and a cinematic action-RPG presentation. It is a broader comparison than Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden: the connection is atmosphere, stakes and the way martial-arts ideas are translated into a modern action game, not identical sword mechanics.

A GamesRadar writer who played preview builds described Phantom Blade Zero as less Souls-like than Black Myth: Wukong and closer to old-school, level-based action. The same preview characterized Phantom Blade Zero’s style and skill expression as approaching Devil May Cry. Those are one writer’s hands-on impressions of preview software, not a final review or a settled genre classification.

What to expect from the comparison

Black Myth: Wukong is useful when you want a substantial action-RPG with spectacle and mythic Chinese subject matter. Choose it over Sekiro if you want a wider adventure and more role-playing context; choose Sekiro if the exact quality of a deflection duel matters more than the broader journey. Neither choice proves how Phantom Blade Zero will feel after release.

How Phantom Blade Zero’s announced combat differs from these games

Fast hack-and-slash ambitions

S-GAME says it wants the sleek, breathtaking action of 1990s kung-fu films rather than slow, purely strategic encounters. Liang’s comparison to Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden establishes the intended pace and move richness. The studio has also emphasized that combat moves use handcrafted animation. Liang wrote that “Combat moves in Phantom Blade Zero have to be made with handcrafted animation, because motion capturing can’t do it justice.”

That statement describes the team’s production approach and ambition. It does not guarantee a specific frame rate, input response or final balance, so treat it as design intent until the released game can be evaluated.

Weapons, Phantom Edges and customization

Official material points to a large arsenal. PlayStation’s August 17, 2026 deep dive says there are more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons. The current PlayStation product page, accessed October 13, 2026, advertises 30-plus primary weapons and more than 20 unique Phantom Edges. Because those pages give different secondary-weapon figures, the safest conclusion is that Phantom Blade Zero offers dozens of weapons and weapon-like options; do not rely on one precise secondary count without checking the latest listing.

PlayStation also describes upgrades, accessories and summons. These systems suggest room to shape how Soul fights, but the available information does not establish whether customization will resemble Devil May Cry’s style-switching, Sekiro’s focused toolset or a conventional action-RPG build system.

Mission structure and convenience features

S-GAME’s earlier overview describes multiple handcrafted maps in a semi-open format. That places Phantom Blade Zero between a strictly linear level sequence and a giant uninterrupted open world. Side quests are part of the official feature description.

The PlayStation listing names adjustable difficulty, pausing during offline play and manual saving. Those details matter if you need to stop during a long session or want a challenge level that can be tailored to your experience. They also distinguish the game’s announced structure from assumptions based solely on its action-heavy trailers.

Release date, platforms and what is still unknown

S-GAME and PlayStation announced October 29, 2026 as the release date. A creator letter from Soulframe, published in the Steam Community hub on June 2, 2026, says the launch moved from September 9, 2026 to October 29, 2026. However, the Steam store page displayed October 28 when accessed. Storefront timing can vary by region and platform, so check the listing attached to your account before launch.

Phantom Blade Zero remains an upcoming game at the authoritative date for this article. There is no released review score, independent performance benchmark, sales figure or confirmed final assessment of how its combat compares after dozens of hours. Official feature descriptions are useful for planning, but they are not substitutes for launch testing.

Steam includes a “Souls-like” tag, while S-GAME’s stated direction and the preview comparison point toward fast hack-and-slash and old-school action. The accurate position is that the game should not be labeled definitively either way before release.

Which game should you play first?

If you want… Start with… Reason
The widest combo vocabulary and stylish improvisation Devil May Cry 5 Its design is built around expressive move combinations and rapid offense
High-pressure fights and lethal speed Ninja Gaiden It emphasizes fast decisions, aggressive enemies and technical melee
Deflection timing and disciplined sword duels Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Its combat revolves around readable attacks, counters and posture pressure
Chinese-inspired fantasy and action-RPG spectacle Black Myth: Wukong It is the closest broad comparison for wuxia-adjacent atmosphere and cinematic encounters
A mix of weapons, side quests and adjustable challenge Wait for Phantom Blade Zero Those features are announced for S-GAME’s game, but their final implementation cannot be verified before launch

How to set expectations before buying Phantom Blade Zero

  1. Check the date on your storefront. Use October 29, 2026 as the announced date, but verify whether your regional listing shows October 28 or another local release time.
  2. Decide which combat quality matters most. Pick Devil May Cry 5 or Ninja Gaiden for immediate fast-action practice, Sekiro for deflection timing, and Black Myth: Wukong for a larger wuxia-adjacent action-RPG context.
  3. Read the final platform listing. Confirm the edition, supported platform, system requirements and any regional differences when the store page is current.
  4. Separate confirmed features from aspirations. Dozens of weapons, side quests, adjustable difficulty, offline pausing and manual saving are listed by PlayStation; exact balance, performance and long-term variety remain release questions.
  5. Use previews as signals, not verdicts. The GamesRadar comparison describes preview builds. It can help you understand the intended direction, but it cannot establish the quality of the finished game.

The practical verdict

For a game you can play now, Devil May Cry 5 is the best all-round substitute for Phantom Blade Zero’s promised fast, stylish sword combat, while Ninja Gaiden is the sharper choice for relentless technical pressure. Sekiro covers precise deflection-focused duels, and Black Myth: Wukong covers the broader Chinese-fantasy action-RPG angle.

Phantom Blade Zero’s distinct proposition is the combination: a Kungfupunk setting, handcrafted martial-arts animation, a large weapon selection and semi-open handcrafted maps. Whether that combination delivers the intended speed and expressiveness can only be judged once the game launches.
