If you want something to play before Phantom Blade Zero, start with Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice for strict deflects and posture battles, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty for the closest wuxia-flavored deflect rhythm, or Nioh 2 for the deepest weapon, stance, loot and build experimentation. Black Myth: Wukong is the better choice for Chinese myth, cinematic bosses and spectacle, while Sifu and Devil May Cry 5 suit players who value martial-arts timing or expressive combos more than a one-to-one match.

No substitute reproduces every part of Phantom Blade Zero. Choose by the combat rhythm you want—hard parries, flowing deflects, dodge-and-ability play or combo expression—then weigh weapon depth, level structure, difficulty and platform.

What Phantom Blade Zero sets as the comparison point

PlayStation describes Phantom Blade Zero as “a dark wuxia action RPG powered by Unreal Engine 5.” The Steam listing presents it as a fusion of classic wuxia storytelling and fast action, with action-RPG, martial-arts, hack-and-slash, Souls-like, third-person, single-player and story-rich tags. Those labels point to a specific blend: rapid weapon exchanges, defensive timing, demanding bosses, stylish animation and a dark Chinese-fantasy atmosphere.

The official release information currently lists October 29, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and PC through Steam. That date and availability are current as of October 18, 2026; regional store pages can change, so check your country before relying on a price, preorder bonus, physical edition or stock status. PlayStation’s description of combat also highlights weapon upgrades and the ability to change a build after upgrading a weapon. In practical terms, that suggests a focused weapon identity without permanently trapping you in an early build choice.

The useful question is therefore not “Which game is identical?” but “Which part of that promise matters most to me?”

Best games like Phantom Blade Zero at a glance

Game Closest match Main difference Choose it if you want
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Deflect timing, posture pressure and boss reads More rigidly centered on one core weapon and its defensive system Precision fights where every parry changes the duel
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Chinese martial-arts flavor and flowing deflects Its progression and encounter balance are more system-driven than cinematic wuxia A direct thematic and mechanical bridge
Nioh 2 Weapon variety, stances, skills, loot and builds More equipment management and experimentation, less focused presentation Deep character building and repeated mastery
Black Myth: Wukong Chinese setting, mythic spectacle and boss-led action RPG progression More dodge- and ability-oriented than a pure parry game Cinematic encounters and Chinese mythology
Sifu Martial-arts timing and replayable mastery More compact and arcade-like, with less conventional RPG build depth Learning enemy patterns through repeated runs
Devil May Cry 5 Fast, stylish weapon switching and expressive combat Combo-first character action rather than wuxia or Souls-like progression Air juggles, style rankings and creative chains
Rise of the Ronin Historical Japanese action RPG with multiple weapons Broader exploration and role-playing structure rather than a tightly focused dark wuxia presentation A larger world and more conventional action-RPG freedom

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice — the precision-defense choice

Pick Sekiro when the part of Phantom Blade Zero that excites you is reading an opponent, deflecting at the last moment and breaking a boss’s posture through pressure. Its combat is built around a strict timing loop: attacks are not simply damage opportunities, and defense is not passive. A successful deflect keeps you close, maintains momentum and advances the posture battle that can end an encounter before a traditional health-bar grind.

This is the strongest mechanical reference for a deflect-first game. Bosses demand that you learn attack strings, identify which blows can be answered directly and stay calm when the rhythm changes. The result is demanding but legible: improvement comes from understanding the fight rather than finding a stronger item.

Where Sekiro differs

Sekiro is less of a weapon-collection or build-crafting game. Its identity is intentionally concentrated, so players looking for Phantom Blade Zero’s weapon upgrades and the freedom to reshape a build may find fewer equipment decisions. Its setting is Japanese shinobi fantasy, not dark wuxia, making it a combat match rather than a thematic one.

Best for

Choose it if your search is really “games with fast sword combat and hard parries,” and you would accept a narrower role-playing system in exchange for exceptionally focused boss design.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty — the closest wuxia-and-deflect bridge

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is the most direct bridge when you want both Chinese martial-arts flavor and a deflect-centered rhythm. The action encourages you to answer incoming attacks rather than retreat from every threat. Deflecting can turn an enemy’s momentum against them, creating the sense of a duel that constantly changes direction.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls- PlayStation 5
  • Assemble your team of legendary Marvel characters in the ultimate 4v4 tag team fighter from PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works and Marvel Games.
  • Experiment with team compositions to discover new combos, synergies, and strategies. Blast your way through dynamic stages based on iconic Marvel Universe locales, some featuring interactive stage transitions.
  • Fighting is both immersive and intuitive, with a range of unique move sets, combos, and strategies to master. Adjustable controls, both traditional and quick inputs, plus easy chain combos make diving right in a breeze.
  • Face off against a friend locally or join the fray with up to 64 players in the online lobby, including standard VS modes. Plus, dive deep on each team with the single player Episode Mode to learn more about team dynamics and lore.

That makes Wo Long a natural recommendation for readers searching “wuxia action games on PS5” or “Sekiro versus Wo Long versus Nioh.” It shares the cultural and martial-arts neighborhood of Phantom Blade Zero while retaining the demanding timing that attracts Souls-like players.

Where Wo Long differs

Its progression is more openly systemic. Morale, equipment and character choices influence how encounters feel, so it offers more room to adjust than a single, tightly authored duel system. The trade-off is that its presentation can feel less like a continuous cinematic wuxia clash and more like a game of interconnected rules.

Best for

Choose Wo Long if you want the nearest combination of Chinese martial-arts atmosphere and active deflecting, especially if you enjoy experimenting with a character rather than mastering one fixed combat profile.

Nioh 2 — the weapon and build-depth choice

Nioh 2 is the recommendation for players who interpret “weapon-focused” as “give me many weapons, stances, skills and build decisions.” Its combat rewards switching approaches, learning the properties of different weapon types and tuning equipment around a preferred strategy. Loot and character development create a much larger decision space than a deliberately focused action game.

That depth makes it excellent for players who want to test a build, revise it and return to earlier challenges with a different answer. It also provides more room for players who enjoy optimizing systems between missions rather than relying only on execution during a boss fight.

Where Nioh 2 differs

Nioh 2 is a stronger systems match than a presentation match. Its equipment screens, loot flow and stance experimentation can interrupt the clean cinematic line that Phantom Blade Zero is promising. It also asks you to manage more variables, which can be rewarding or exhausting depending on whether you want a tightly authored action game.

Persona 3 Reload: Standard Edition - PlayStation 5
  • Experience the pivotal game of the Persona series faithfully remade with cutting-edge graphics, modernized quality-of-life features, and signature stylish UI.
  • Fully immerse yourself in an emotional, gripping journey with new scenes and character interactions, additional voiceover, and a reloaded soundtrack.
  • Choose how to meaningfully spend each day through various activities from exploring the Port Island to forging genuine bonds with beloved characters.
  • Build and command your optimal team to take down otherworldly Shadows and climb closer to the truth.

Best for

Choose it for “action RPGs with parries and weapon switching” when buildcraft, stance selection and replayable gear experimentation matter more than a single wuxia visual style.

Black Myth: Wukong — the Chinese-myth spectacle choice

Black Myth: Wukong is the best alternative when the appeal is Chinese mythology, dramatic presentation and a boss-led action-RPG journey. It delivers the kind of large-scale visual and narrative spectacle that can satisfy players drawn to Phantom Blade Zero’s dark-fantasy framing.

Its combat should not be treated as a one-to-one mechanical substitute. The emphasis leans more toward dodging, abilities and encounter-specific options than toward maintaining a pure deflect-and-posture loop. You will still read patterns and choose the right moment to attack, but the defensive rhythm is different.

Best for

Choose it when setting, animation and memorable bosses are your first priorities, and you are comfortable with a combat system that gives dodges and powers a larger role than hard parries.

Secondary alternatives for a different kind of speed

Devil May Cry 5

Choose Devil May Cry 5 for the most expressive weapon switching and combo construction. It is about controlling space, launching enemies, cancelling moves and maintaining style. That makes it ideal for players who say “fast sword combat” but mean creative offense rather than defensive timing. It is not a wuxia RPG substitute, and its progression is built around character-action mastery instead of Souls-like tension.

Sifu

Sifu concentrates on martial-arts timing, positioning and replayable mastery. Shorter stages and repeated attempts make each run a lesson in enemy patterns, spacing and counters. It has less conventional equipment and build depth than Phantom Blade Zero, but it may be the most satisfying option if your priority is the feel of hand-to-hand and weapon-based martial arts improving through practice.

Dolmen - PlayStation 5
  • Dolmen is a terrifying new action RPG that combines futuristic Sci-Fi and Cosmic Horror elements
  • Dolmen casts players onto a hostile alien world known as Revion Prime - Your job is to bring back samples of a crystal with particularly unique properties - the so-called "Dolmen"
  • Experience a rich combat system with various weapons and moves at your disposal
  • Energy management is key to victory in Dolmen - Energy is not only used for ranged weapons, but also for activating "Energy Mode"
  • Revion Prime offers a wide array of gruesome obstacles that will put your skills to the test

Rise of the Ronin

Rise of the Ronin suits readers who want a broader historical action-RPG structure with several weapons and more room to explore. It is a secondary fit because its wider role-playing framework is less concentrated than Phantom Blade Zero’s dark wuxia pitch. Consider it when exploration, side activities and a larger-feeling journey matter as much as the individual duel.

Compare the games by the decision that matters to you

1. Defense rhythm

  • Hard parries and posture: Sekiro is the clearest choice.
  • Flowing deflects with Chinese martial-arts flavor: choose Wo Long.
  • Dodge and ability emphasis: choose Black Myth: Wukong.
  • Counters and close-range martial-arts timing: choose Sifu.
  • Offensive combo expression: choose Devil May Cry 5.

2. Weapon and build depth

  • Focused weapon identity with upgrade-driven adaptation: wait for Phantom Blade Zero and verify how its final systems work.
  • Broad loot, stances and build experimentation: Nioh 2.
  • More concentrated execution than equipment management: Sekiro or Sifu.

3. Presentation versus systems

For cinematic wuxia clashes and a dark Chinese-fantasy tone, Phantom Blade Zero remains the specific target. For Chinese myth and spectacle, choose Black Myth: Wukong. For a rules-heavy combat laboratory, choose Nioh 2. For stylish, highly expressive animation systems, choose Devil May Cry 5.

4. Structure and replay style

If you want concentrated boss learning, Sekiro and Sifu make each encounter a study in timing. If you prefer mission-based progression with equipment and build changes, Wo Long and Nioh 2 provide more systemic adjustment. If you want a broader adventure around combat, Black Myth: Wukong and Rise of the Ronin are the better directional fits. These are broad structural tendencies, not claims that any game reproduces Phantom Blade Zero’s final level design.

5. Difficulty and accessibility

All of the closest comparisons ask you to learn enemy behavior, but they punish mistakes differently. Sekiro makes timing central and gives you fewer build-based ways to bypass a wall. Wo Long and Nioh 2 offer more system levers, so equipment and character choices can change your approach. Black Myth: Wukong gives dodges and abilities a larger role. Before buying, check the current edition and difficulty options in your region; settings and post-launch updates can alter the practical experience.

A simple choice path

  1. Do you want the closest defensive skill test? Start with Sekiro.
  2. Do you specifically want Chinese martial-arts atmosphere plus deflects? Choose Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty.
  3. Do you want the largest weapon, stance and build sandbox? Choose Nioh 2.
  4. Do you care most about Chinese mythology and cinematic bosses? Choose Black Myth: Wukong.
  5. Do you want replayable martial-arts mastery in compact stages? Choose Sifu.
  6. Do you want stylish combos and rapid weapon switching? Choose Devil May Cry 5.
  7. Do you want a broader historical action RPG? Choose Rise of the Ronin.

What to check before Phantom Blade Zero releases

Phantom Blade Zero is currently scheduled for October 29, 2026, on PS5 and PC through Steam. Confirm the listing for your country immediately before purchase because release timing, price, preorder status, stock and edition contents are regional and can change. The official descriptions establish its dark wuxia setting, action-RPG structure, weapon upgrades and build flexibility; they do not establish a universal difficulty setting, final performance targets or identical feature availability across every region.

If you are choosing a game to play first, use the comparison that matches your reason for being interested: Sekiro for precision, Wo Long for wuxia deflects, Nioh 2 for build depth, or Black Myth: Wukong for mythic spectacle. That approach avoids expecting one substitute to cover every axis of Phantom Blade Zero’s design.
