Games Like Phantom Blade Zero: The Best Action Games for Parries and Cinematic Combat

If you want a game to play before Phantom Blade Zero, start with Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice for the closest deflection-focused challenge. Choose Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty for Chinese-inspired atmosphere and martial-arts deflections, God of War for heavily staged story combat, or Dragon’s Dogma 2 when exploration and unpredictable party battles matter more than perfect parry timing.

Those games overlap with Phantom Blade Zero in different ways; none is a mechanical duplicate. Phantom Blade Zero is presented as a dark wuxia action RPG powered by Unreal Engine 5, combining rapid counters, cinematic kung fu movement, weapon variety and a wounded swordsman’s race through the Wulin. The recommendations below separate the parts that actually match so you can pick the right substitute rather than simply choosing another difficult action RPG.

What Phantom Blade Zero is promising

Phantom Blade Zero follows Soul, a swordsman whose heart is injured and who has 66 days left to live while powerful enemies hunt him across the Wulin. PlayStation describes it as a “dark wuxia action RPG powered by Unreal Engine 5.” Its advertised combat loop is “dodge, deflect, counter, and strike in one seamless flow,” supported by cinematic kung fu movement and seamless combos.

The announced equipment range is unusually broad. The PlayStation listing says there are more than 30 main weapons; the August 2026 State of Play article adds 25 Phantom Edges, while the Steam description says 30-plus primary weapons and more than 20 unique Phantom Edges. Treat those as platform-specific or updated descriptions rather than a single guaranteed total. Builds can be upgraded, and side quests sit alongside the main route.

Difficulty is intended to be adjustable. The announced modes run from Wayfarer through Hellwalker and Sixty-Six Days, allowing the same campaign to serve players who want a more forgiving action RPG and those who want a severe test. Donnie Yen is credited as creative consultant and as a facial- and motion-capture performer. On PS5, the listing specifies adaptive triggers, haptic feedback and Tempest 3D AudioTech.

The announced PS5 launch date is October 29, 2026, or October 28 in the United States and select regions according to the State of Play article. Steam lists the PC release as October 28, 2026. Because the game is not yet released on the date of this article, the comparisons here use its published design description, not hands-on performance claims.

At-a-glance comparison

Game Parry or deflect focus Combat feel World structure Difficulty and access Cinematic match Availability documented in the listings
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Core loop: read attacks, deflect, damage posture Fast, precise, limited build experimentation Connected areas with vertical routes and stealth Demanding; few ways to bypass timing lessons Visceral duels and dramatic set pieces Steam PC listing; released March 21, 2019
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Deflection is central and tied to momentum Quick martial-arts strings, weapon and spell options Mission-based levels rather than one continuous open world Challenging, with co-op and build systems Dark-fantasy Three Kingdoms presentation Steam PC listing; base game and Complete Edition
God of War (2022) Useful defensive skill, not the whole game Weighty third-person strikes, shields and abilities Directed story path with optional exploration Multiple difficulty settings and accessibility options Strongest story, camera and character staging Steam PC listing; 2022 release
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Situational defense; timing is not the central exam Emergent encounters, climbing and party tactics Large explorable fantasy world Variable challenge shaped by vocation and party Reactive, player-authored spectacle Steam PC listing; 2024 release

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice — best for pure deflection timing

Choose Sekiro when the part of Phantom Blade Zero that excites you most is the moment-to-moment contest of reading an enemy, meeting an attack at the correct instant and immediately taking control of the exchange. Its posture system makes defense an offensive resource: successful deflections build pressure until an opponent can be finished. You are not waiting for a large opening and then emptying a stamina bar; you are creating the opening through rhythm and precision.

Why the combat match is strong

Steam presents Sekiro as an action-adventure built around stealth, vertical traversal, prosthetic tools and direct head-to-head combat. That combination gives every arena more than one solution, while the major duels still demand that you learn attack patterns. The result is a deliberate but fast cadence that rewards staying close instead of retreating after every hit.

This is the cleanest preparation for a deflect-counter mindset, but it is not proof that Phantom Blade Zero will use identical systems. Phantom Blade Zero advertises more weapons, seamless combos and adjustable modes; Sekiro is more focused, with a fixed protagonist toolkit and less emphasis on conventional build variety.

Difficulty, accessibility and structure

Sekiro is tagged Difficult and Rhythm on Steam, alongside Stealth and Hack and Slash. Its challenge is largely mechanical: changing equipment or selecting a softer build will not remove the need to learn timing. Vertical movement, stealth approaches and prosthetic tools can reduce the number of enemies you fight at once, but bosses still test your reactions.

The Steam listing showed 93% positive English reviews from 88,810 reviews when accessed on October 18, 2026. That is a snapshot of user sentiment on that date, not a guarantee that every player will find the difficulty suitable.

  • Experiment with team compositions to discover new combos, synergies, and strategies. Blast your way through dynamic stages based on iconic Marvel Universe locales, some featuring interactive stage transitions.
  • Fighting is both immersive and intuitive, with a range of unique move sets, combos, and strategies to master. Adjustable controls, both traditional and quick inputs, plus easy chain combos make diving right in a breeze.
  • Face off against a friend locally or join the fray with up to 64 players in the online lobby, including standard VS modes. Plus, dive deep on each team with the single player Episode Mode to learn more about team dynamics and lore.

Who should pick it

  • Pick Sekiro if you want parries or deflections to define almost every serious encounter.
  • Pick it if a mostly linear, authored journey is preferable to collecting a large arsenal.
  • Skip it if you need extensive difficulty assists, co-op or a flexible class-and-loot system.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty — best wuxia-adjacent alternative

Wo Long is the recommendation for readers who want Chinese historical imagery, martial-arts terminology and deflection-driven momentum without waiting for Phantom Blade Zero. Steam describes it as a dark-fantasy Three Kingdoms action RPG from Team NINJA, released March 3, 2023. Its tags include Martial Arts, Souls-like, Hack and Slash and Co-op.

How its deflection differs from Sekiro

Wo Long makes deflection a highly visible part of movement and resource management. Landing one can turn an enemy’s attack into your advance, while mistakes affect the flow of a fight rather than simply costing health. Weapon attacks, martial arts and spells let you shape a build around aggressive counters, but the system still asks you to recognize incoming moves.

That makes it a better thematic bridge to Phantom Blade Zero than a generic medieval action RPG. The match remains partial: Wo Long uses a mission-based structure and dark-fantasy Three Kingdoms fiction, whereas Phantom Blade Zero is a cinematic wuxia story about Soul and the Wulin. Expect shared ideas, not the same animation language or encounter design.

Co-op, editions and accessibility

The Steam store offers both the base game and a Complete Edition. The listing also identifies co-op, so you can approach difficult missions with another player rather than treating every obstacle as a solo timing test. Builds, morale systems and equipment choices give you more room to compensate for an imperfect reaction window than Sekiro does.

Use Wo Long if you want to experiment with weapons and abilities, or if the option of co-op matters. Its mission structure is less suitable if your priority is a seamless cinematic road movie, and its tone is darker and more supernatural than a straightforward historical drama.

Who should pick it

  • Choose it for Chinese-inspired atmosphere plus a deflection-centered combat loop.
  • Choose it when build experimentation and co-op are valuable forms of accessibility.
  • Do not choose it expecting Phantom Blade Zero’s exact wuxia cast, weapon count or visual direction.

God of War (2022) — best cinematic, story-led combat

God of War is the strongest choice when “cinematic combat” means dramatic camera work, character relationships, set-piece pacing and fights that support a larger story. Steam lists the 2022 game as a single-player action RPG from Santa Monica Studio and Jetpack Interactive. Its tags include Story Rich, Combat, Third Person, Hack and Slash and Action RPG.

Where it matches Phantom Blade Zero

Combat is presented over the shoulder, keeping the protagonist, enemies and surrounding environment in the same visual conversation. Heavy axe attacks, shield use, ranged options and abilities make each encounter feel staged rather than abstract. Parries are satisfying and can create counterattack windows, but the game does not require the strict, continuous deflection rhythm that defines Sekiro.

Persona 3 Reload: Standard Edition - PlayStation 5
  • Experience the pivotal game of the Persona series faithfully remade with cutting-edge graphics, modernized quality-of-life features, and signature stylish UI.
  • Fully immerse yourself in an emotional, gripping journey with new scenes and character interactions, additional voiceover, and a reloaded soundtrack.
  • Choose how to meaningfully spend each day through various activities from exploring the Port Island to forging genuine bonds with beloved characters.
  • Build and command your optimal team to take down otherworldly Shadows and climb closer to the truth.

That distinction matters. If you want to practice reading every strike, God of War is too forgiving and too ability-driven to be a direct substitute. If you want a polished action adventure in which combat, dialogue and spectacle reinforce one another, it is an excellent match for Phantom Blade Zero’s advertised cinematic ambitions.

Difficulty and player comfort

God of War offers selectable difficulty settings and a broader story-first presentation than the other recommendations. You can lower the pressure when a boss becomes a roadblock, then raise it when you want more demanding encounters. The game also gives you equipment upgrades and abilities to change your approach instead of asking for one universal reaction skill.

Steam showed 96% positive English reviews from 61,080 reviews when accessed on October 18, 2026. This is a dated store snapshot, not a performance benchmark or a prediction about your own experience.

Who should pick it

  • Pick it when narrative momentum and cinematic staging outrank perfect parry execution.
  • Pick it for weighty attacks and a clear story route with optional areas to explore.
  • Skip it if your main requirement is a parry-only combat identity or wuxia setting.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 — best for exploration and player-authored encounters

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the loosest comparison, but it answers a different version of the question: what if the appeal of Phantom Blade Zero is spectacular third-person action in a world where you decide how an encounter unfolds? Steam describes it as a 2024, single-player, narrative-driven action RPG. You create your Arisen, choose a vocation, assemble a party and decide how to approach an explorable fantasy world.

Why its combat feels different

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is not built around a strict parry exam. Its memorable moments come from climbing large creatures, exploiting terrain, combining vocation abilities and watching party members react to danger. Defensive timing exists, but it is one tool among many. A prepared party, a different vocation or an improvised environmental tactic can matter more than meeting every blow with a perfectly timed deflection.

That makes it a useful alternative for players who use “cinematic” to mean emergent spectacle. The action is less choreographed than Phantom Blade Zero’s advertised seamless kung fu flow, yet the freedom to choose your party and method can produce battles no scripted sequence would duplicate.

Exploration and accessibility

The open-world structure changes the difficulty curve. You can leave a dangerous area, improve your character, alter your vocation or recruit a party with complementary strengths. That flexibility can be more welcoming than a boss-gated action game, although unexpected encounters may still punish poor preparation.

Dolmen - PlayStation 5
  • Dolmen is a terrifying new action RPG that combines futuristic Sci-Fi and Cosmic Horror elements
  • Dolmen casts players onto a hostile alien world known as Revion Prime - Your job is to bring back samples of a crystal with particularly unique properties - the so-called "Dolmen"
  • Experience a rich combat system with various weapons and moves at your disposal
  • Energy management is key to victory in Dolmen - Energy is not only used for ranged weapons, but also for activating "Energy Mode"
  • Revion Prime offers a wide array of gruesome obstacles that will put your skills to the test

Who should pick it

  • Choose it for open exploration, party play and stories that emerge from your decisions.
  • Choose it when cinematic action includes giant-monster encounters and environmental improvisation.
  • Do not choose it as a parry-training substitute; timing is not the central system.

How to choose the right substitute

If parries are non-negotiable

Start with Sekiro. Its posture pressure and attack-reading loop put timing ahead of gear collection. Move to Wo Long if you want a similar emphasis with more build options, mission variety and co-op. Neither choice should be treated as a mechanical confirmation of Phantom Blade Zero’s final systems.

If wuxia or Chinese atmosphere matters most

Choose Wo Long. It is explicitly set in a dark-fantasy Three Kingdoms interpretation and carries martial-arts and historical Chinese signifiers. Phantom Blade Zero’s wuxia identity is darker and more cinematic, so the setting match is closer than the narrative match.

If story and spectacle matter more than mastery

Choose God of War. Its over-the-shoulder framing, character-focused writing and staged encounters are the closest fit for a player who wants combat to serve a dramatic journey. Use its difficulty options when you want the spectacle without a wall of execution demands.

If you want a world to get lost in

Choose Dragon’s Dogma 2. It gives you the most room to author your own route, party and combat solution. The trade-off is that its fights are less controlled, less parry-centric and less obviously wuxia.

What to practice before Phantom Blade Zero

Because Phantom Blade Zero advertises “dodge, deflect, counter, and strike” as one flow, a useful preparation plan is to practice decisions rather than memorize a particular game’s button layout.

  1. Read the attack. Watch shoulders, weapons and sound cues instead of reacting only to a health-bar indicator.
  2. Defend at contact. A panic roll or early block teaches a different habit from meeting an attack at the impact moment.
  3. Counter immediately. Treat a successful defense as the beginning of your turn, not the end of danger.
  4. Stay close when safe. Deflection systems usually reward maintaining pressure, while reckless pursuit creates avoidable hits.
  5. Learn when not to parry. Grab attacks, area effects and delayed strikes often require movement or a different response.
  6. Change one variable at a time. When a fight goes wrong, alter positioning, timing or equipment separately so you know what solved it.

Sekiro is the most concentrated exercise for steps one through four. Wo Long adds build and co-op decisions. God of War teaches camera awareness and encounter pacing. Dragon’s Dogma 2 teaches preparation, positioning and adaptation when a fight does not follow a script.

Important differences to keep in mind

  • Weapon variety is not the same as build variety. Phantom Blade Zero advertises more than 30 main weapons and additional Phantom Edges. Sekiro’s appeal comes from a tighter, more authored toolkit, while Wo Long gives you broader equipment and ability choices.
  • Cinematic does not always mean linear. God of War uses directed story presentation. Dragon’s Dogma 2 creates cinematic moments through an explorable world and party behavior. Phantom Blade Zero’s final balance between authored sequences and exploration should be judged after release.
  • Difficulty labels are not interchangeable. Phantom Blade Zero’s announced Wayfarer, Hellwalker and Sixty-Six Days modes suggest adjustable challenge. Sekiro’s difficulty is more deeply embedded in its timing requirements; Wo Long offers more build and co-op levers; God of War offers conventional selectable settings; Dragon’s Dogma 2 lets progression and party composition reshape encounters.
  • Platform information is release-specific. Phantom Blade Zero is announced for PS5 on October 29, 2026, with an October 28 date in the United States and select regions, and for PC through Steam on October 28. The comparison games above are identified through their Steam PC listings; availability on other platforms or in particular editions is not established here.

Bottom line: which game should you play?

Play Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice if the essential fantasy is winning a duel through precise deflections. Play Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty if you want that defensive rhythm wrapped in Chinese-inspired dark fantasy with builds and co-op. Play God of War if cinematic storytelling, camera work and adjustable difficulty are your priorities. Play Dragon’s Dogma 2 if exploration and unscripted party battles sound more appealing than a strict parry test.

Phantom Blade Zero’s distinctive promise is the combination: dark wuxia, rapid counters, seamless combos, a large weapon roster, cinematic movement and a range of difficulty modes. Until its announced October 2026 launch, no existing game reproduces that entire package, so choose the substitute based on the specific part you want to experience first.
