The August 2026 State of Play description lists side quests, upgradeable builds and three difficulty modes: Wayfarer, Hellwalker and Sixty-Six Days. That combination suggests a campaign with room to tune challenge and explore optional content rather than one linear sequence of duels.

Deflect, counter and strike in one flow
The official Steam description reduces the moment-to-moment loop to “Dodge, deflect, counter, and strike in one seamless flow.” That wording is important. Phantom Blade Zero is being presented as a fast action game in which defense immediately creates offense, rather than a slower RPG where you wait for a large opening and chip away at a health bar.
PlayStation lists more than 30 primary weapons and 20 or more Phantom Edges. The later State of Play article expands that picture to more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons, alongside build upgrades. The exact relationship between those categories will matter when the full game is available, but the design goal is clear: weapon choice and timing should change how you approach encounters.
The combat is also intended to look unusually deliberate. Soulframe Liang, founder and CEO of S-GAME, explained: “Combat moves in Phantom Blade Zero have to be made with handcrafted animation, because motion capturing can’t do it justice.” Hand-authored animation is a practical choice for a system that depends on readable attack paths, precise impact timing and cinematic transitions between defense and retaliation.
The “kungfupunk” identity
Phantom Blade Zero combines wuxia martial arts with what its creators call “kungfupunk”: punk fantasy, mechanical prosthetics, industrial ruins and Chinese visual motifs. The result is neither a straightforward historical drama nor a conventional medieval fantasy. Expect swordplay and martial-arts choreography framed by machinery, damaged bodies and dense industrial environments.
That identity is one reason no single alternative is a perfect substitute. A game can match the deflect timing but not the visual language, or share the Chinese cultural texture while offering a different progression structure.

Use the table as a preference map, not a quality ranking. “Technical” can mean strict deflect timing, complex stances, expressive combos or a demanding build system; these games distribute those qualities differently.
Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition: choose it for mastery and builds
Why it is the deepest mechanical substitute
Nioh 2 is the best choice when your definition of technical combat includes learning several systems at once. Its Sengoku-period Japanese setting is populated by yokai, and its action RPG structure layers stance selection, weapon techniques, gear bonuses, yokai abilities and the Yokai Shift transformation.
Instead of committing to one universal defense rhythm, you continually decide how to fight. High, mid and low stances alter attack patterns and movement priorities. Different weapons encourage different spacing and timing, while yokai abilities give you additional ways to interrupt enemies or answer dangerous attacks. Mastery comes from understanding how these systems interact, not simply memorizing one parry window.
Progression is the main attraction—and the main commitment
The Complete Edition is built around extensive loot and build experimentation. You will sort equipment, compare bonuses and refine a setup around a weapon type, stance preference or status effect. That makes it a strong substitute for readers who want Phantom Blade Zero’s weapon variety to lead into long-term theorycrafting.
The trade-off is complexity. Nioh 2 asks you to manage more inventory and statistical detail than a tightly curated action game. If you want to master a small set of weapons without regularly evaluating gear, its systems may feel like work rather than freedom.

Who should pick Nioh 2?
- Choose it if loot, set bonuses and build experimentation are as important to you as parrying.
- Choose it if you enjoy learning several stances and switching tools during one encounter.
- Choose it if online co-op is a deciding factor; the official listing includes co-op play.
- Skip it as your first alternative if the specific appeal is Chinese wuxia atmosphere rather than systems depth.
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty: the closest setting-and-rhythm bridge
Why its deflect timing feels familiar
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a dark-fantasy action RPG set during China’s Three Kingdoms era. Its official listing tags it with martial arts, Souls-like, hack-and-slash and co-op descriptors. Among the alternatives here, it most directly connects a Chinese historical-fantasy world with rapid martial-arts exchanges.
Its defining defensive idea is the deflect. You are encouraged to answer attacks actively and turn a successful read into immediate pressure. That makes the rhythm a useful preview for players interested in Phantom Blade Zero’s stated dodge, deflect and counter loop, while still leaving room for Wo Long’s own systems and encounter rules.
What differs from Phantom Blade Zero
Wo Long is not a confirmed stand-in for Phantom Blade Zero, and Phantom Blade Zero should not be labeled a developer-defined Soulslike. The Souls-like wording appears as a storefront tag for Wo Long, while Phantom Blade Zero is being described through its faster, combo-oriented ambitions.
Wo Long’s Three Kingdoms setting also has a historical-fantasy framework distinct from Phantom Blade Zero’s industrial “kungfupunk” world. Pick it for the combination of Chinese visual language and active deflection, not because the two games share every progression or narrative feature.

The cultural setting and visual spectacle make it an attractive option for readers who want a Chinese-inspired world while waiting for Phantom Blade Zero.

Its appeal is easier to understand as a focused solo adventure than as a loot-and-build laboratory. You follow a curated journey, learn enemy patterns, combine staff attacks with abilities and prepare for set-piece encounters. That structure can make each boss and location feel authored rather than generated by a large equipment matrix.
Where it matches—and where it does not
Black Myth: Wukong shares Chinese cultural texture, dramatic martial-arts imagery and a strong emphasis on action. It does not reproduce Phantom Blade Zero’s advertised weapon count, Phantom Edges or explicit deflect-counter flow. Its progression and encounter design should be judged on their own terms.
Because it is single-player, it is the clearest choice for someone who wants a self-contained campaign without co-op scheduling. It is less suitable if your priority is experimenting with many gear combinations or coordinating with another player.
Who should pick Black Myth: Wukong?

If build experimentation comes first
Nioh 2 is the clear choice. Its loot and gear systems give you the most room to create specialized setups and change your approach over time. Phantom Blade Zero is also promising upgradeable builds and a large weapon roster, but its final balance and depth should be assessed after release.

If the setting is the deciding factor
- Wuxia plus industrial fantasy: wait for Phantom Blade Zero.
- Sengoku Japan and yokai: play Nioh 2.
- Three Kingdoms China and dark fantasy: play Wo Long.
- Chinese mythology: play Black Myth: Wukong.
If you need co-op
The official listings identify co-op for Nioh 2 and Wo Long. Black Myth: Wukong is listed as single-player. The cited Phantom Blade Zero descriptions do not confirm a co-op mode, so do not assume one from the game’s action RPG label.
PS5 setup and release timing for Phantom Blade Zero
