Games Like PEAK: Best Co-op Climbing and Survival Alternatives

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

Content Warning is the closest alternative to PEAK if your group wants short, funny co-op horror runs and communication-driven disasters. Choose Lethal Company for harsher horror and quota pressure, Deep Rock Galactic for combat and class roles, Valheim for a persistent building-and-survival world, or Sons of the Forest for darker, story-led wilderness survival.

PEAK itself is a four-player co-op climbing game released on June 16, 2025. Its procedural routes, physics-driven hazards and survival-horror touches make every summit attempt a coordination problem rather than a conventional action mission. The best substitute depends on which part of that formula your group values most: physical traversal, comic failure, fear, combat, or long-term progression.

What makes PEAK different?

PEAK is built around coordinated movement. Up to four players climb through procedurally generated environments, share tools and decide whether a risky route is worth taking. The terrain and hazards are physics-driven, so a mistake can affect the whole group: one player may lose a foothold, consume a useful resource or force everyone else to change plans.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That structure creates a distinctive rhythm. A team makes a route decision, attempts a dangerous traversal, communicates under pressure and either reaches the summit or deals with the consequences. The game includes survival-horror elements, but climbing—not shooting, looting or base construction—is the central verb.

Most alternatives reproduce only part of that experience. Content Warning matches the short-run comedy and proximity-style communication. Lethal Company matches the fear and shared risk. Deep Rock Galactic matches procedural co-op problem-solving but shifts the emphasis to combat. Valheim and Sons of the Forest replace discrete climbing attempts with persistent survival worlds.

Quick comparison: which PEAK alternative fits your group?

Game Traversal emphasis Horror intensity Combat load Progression model Supported group size What failure feels like
PEAK Physics-based climbing and hazardous summit routes Moderate; survival-horror elements support the climb Low; traversal and tool use are the focus Run-based summit attempts with procedural routes Up to four players Immediate, often chaotic consequences during a climb
Content Warning Descending into locations and escaping with footage High, presented through a comic filming premise Low; avoidance and teamwork dominate Short runs built around recording and extraction Two to four players online Funny, improvised disasters when oxygen, battery or teamwork fails
Lethal Company Navigation through abandoned facilities rather than climbing High; creatures and escalating danger drive decisions Limited compared with a combat shooter Quota-based scavenging missions Up to four players Long-term resource and quota losses can make the next mission harder
Deep Rock Galactic Movement through destructible procedural caves Lower; threat comes mainly from hostile creatures High; weapons and class abilities are central Repeatable missions with class-based progression One to four players Mission failure costs time and rewards, but the structure encourages another attempt
Valheim Exploration across a persistent world Variable; atmosphere and hostile areas matter more than short-run scares Meaningful survival combat Persistent building, crafting and group progression Not stated in the available game details; verify the current platform listing Death and lost resources can affect an ongoing world
Sons of the Forest Wilderness travel, caves and shelter construction High; darker survival-horror presentation Meaningful combat against hostile threats Persistent, story-oriented survival progression Not stated in the available game details; verify the current platform listing Resource loss and interrupted story progress matter beyond one short run

Use the table as a starting point, not a ranking. A group that wants to laugh at failed attempts should look at Content Warning; a group that wants to protect a quota should look at Lethal Company. Players who enjoy role specialization will get more from Deep Rock Galactic, while builders and story-focused survival players should consider Valheim or Sons of the Forest.

Content Warning: the closest match for goofy co-op chaos

How it plays

Content Warning is a co-op horror game released on April 1, 2024. It supports two to four players online. The team descends into the Old World, records monsters and relics, then tries to get back out before oxygen or the camera battery runs out.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The camera gives every expedition a shared objective beyond simple survival. One player may focus on filming while another watches a route, distracts a threat or helps a teammate escape. Communication is valuable because the group has limited time and must decide what is worth recording before returning to safety.

Why PEAK players may enjoy it

  • Both games create stories from coordinated movement rather than scripted hero moments.
  • Both reward clear voice communication when a route or retreat becomes dangerous.
  • Both turn small mistakes into memorable group failures instead of isolated deaths.
  • Both work well for short sessions where the objective is understood quickly.

What changes

Content Warning is more explicitly horror- and filming-focused. Its tension comes from entering the Old World, capturing useful footage and escaping before oxygen or battery runs out. It does not reproduce PEAK’s physics-driven climbing or summit route decisions. If your favorite moment in PEAK is physically solving a difficult ascent, this is a tonal substitute rather than a mechanical one.

Choose it when your group values proximity-style communication, slapstick failures and compact runs. It is especially suitable when some players want horror but nobody wants a long-term base or inventory commitment.

Lethal Company: the best choice for scavenging pressure and stronger horror

How it plays

Lethal Company released on October 23, 2023. It is a co-op horror game about scavenging abandoned moons and selling scrap to the Company. The current game is playable with up to four players, with multiple planets, creatures and tools.

A crew decides how to divide its attention. Some players can guide teammates from the ship while others enter facilities, or the whole team can go inside together. Scrap must be carried back while danger escalates, so a successful run depends on balancing greed against a safe extraction.

Why PEAK players may enjoy it

  • Both games make the route itself a source of risk rather than a simple corridor between objectives.
  • Small teams have to decide when to continue and when to retreat.
  • Remote communication can be as important as what the exploring players see directly.
  • Failure can emerge from a chain of ordinary decisions instead of a single scripted event.

What changes

Lethal Company is less about physical climbing and more about scavenging under a quota. The pressure is economic and cumulative: bringing back enough scrap matters to future missions, so a team may accept more danger than it would in a one-off summit attempt. Horror is also more central, with creatures and abandoned facilities providing the main threat.

Pick it if your group wants a heavier fear factor, resource risk and mission-level consequences. Avoid it if the appeal of PEAK is specifically the tactile challenge of climbing and balancing through a dangerous route.

Deep Rock Galactic: combat, classes and repeatable cave missions

How it plays

Deep Rock Galactic released on May 13, 2020. It is a one-to-four-player co-op first-person shooter in which dwarven miners explore procedurally generated, destructible caves while fighting endless hordes of alien monsters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The team solves objectives through complementary class roles. Players mine, navigate, defend themselves and use their class equipment to handle the cave in different ways. Destructible terrain means the group can shape its approach instead of following a fixed path.

Why PEAK players may enjoy it

  • Procedural environments make each mission a fresh navigation and teamwork problem.
  • One-to-four-player support works for both solo practice and a full group.
  • Roles create meaningful reasons to coordinate rather than simply move together.
  • Repeatable missions provide a reliable structure for groups that play regularly.

What changes

Combat is the defining difference. In PEAK, the main question is usually whether the group can traverse a hazard. In Deep Rock Galactic, hostile creatures and weapons are central to the mission loop. The caves are destructible and procedural, but the experience is an action shooter rather than a traversal-first survival-horror game.

Choose it when your group wants structured objectives, class identity, mining and frequent fights. It is the strongest recommendation for players who like the cooperative problem-solving of PEAK but want a deeper combat system and a repeatable mission framework.

Valheim: the long-form survival and building alternative

How it plays

Valheim belongs on this list for a different reason: it offers a persistent survival world instead of a sequence of compact climbing runs. The core activities are base building, exploration, crafting and long-term group progression.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your group’s decisions accumulate. A shelter, stockpile, crafted tool or explored area remains part of the shared world, so preparation can make later expeditions safer and more ambitious. That persistence changes the emotional weight of failure: losing resources or a character can affect plans well beyond the current outing.

Why PEAK players may enjoy it

  • Exploration is a group activity in which route planning and preparation matter.
  • Players can divide responsibilities while still contributing to a shared objective.
  • The world supports self-directed expeditions rather than forcing every session into the same mission format.
  • Survival systems give equipment and logistics a larger role than they have in a short climbing attempt.

What changes

Valheim is a larger commitment. It does not aim for the concentrated tension of reaching a summit in one run. Building, crafting and world progression give the group reasons to return to the same save, while travel and preparation occupy more of the overall experience.

Choose it when your friends want to establish a home, plan multi-session projects and watch a shared world develop. It is a poor substitute if everyone wants a quick, self-contained challenge with a clear beginning and end.

Group-size and platform details can change with updates and editions, so check the current official listing before buying for a specific platform or party configuration.

Sons of the Forest: darker, story-led wilderness survival

How it plays

Sons of the Forest is the darker survival branch of these recommendations. It combines shelter building, hostile wilderness, caves and a more continuous, story-oriented experience.

The group spends more time inhabiting the world than resetting after a short attempt. Finding a defensible place, gathering supplies and deciding how far to push into dangerous areas are part of an ongoing survival plan. Caves and hostile encounters add a stronger horror identity than the lighter failures many players associate with PEAK.

Why PEAK players may enjoy it

  • Travel through dangerous environments remains a central group activity.
  • Players must communicate about supplies, shelter and whether to enter a threatening area.
  • Caves and wilderness provide exploratory routes rather than a purely linear mission path.
  • The atmosphere supports players who want survival-horror to be the main tone.

What changes

The commitment is much larger than a compact climbing run. Progress persists, construction matters and the story gives the group a longer arc. Failure can cost resources or interrupt plans in the shared world rather than simply ending one attempt at the summit.

Choose Sons of the Forest when the group wants a darker atmosphere, shelter construction and a continuous survival narrative. It is not the best pick for players who mainly want lighthearted physics chaos or short sessions with no ongoing save to maintain.

Choose by the kind of co-op session you want

You want the nearest overall mood

Start with Content Warning. Its two-to-four-player structure, oxygen and battery limits, filming objective and comic horror make it the closest tonal follow-up to a group laughing through a dangerous PEAK attempt.

You want the most frightening replacement

Choose Lethal Company for stronger horror pressure tied to abandoned locations, creatures and a quota. Choose Sons of the Forest instead if you want that darker tone spread across a persistent wilderness and story.

You want more fighting

Choose Deep Rock Galactic. It keeps procedural co-op exploration but makes weapons, class roles and enemy waves the center of play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want to keep one world for weeks

Choose Valheim for building, crafting and long-term exploration, or Sons of the Forest if the same persistent structure should carry a darker survival story.

You want short attempts with funny failure

Stay with PEAK or try Content Warning. Both are better suited to groups that want a clear run, immediate consequences and a natural reason to start again after something goes wrong.

You want failure to affect future planning

Lethal Company, Valheim and Sons of the Forest put more weight on resources or persistent progress. That can make success more satisfying, but it also means a bad decision may shape the next session instead of disappearing when the run ends.

How to pick for your group’s schedule

For a first session with four friends

Use Content Warning when everyone wants to understand the premise quickly and start making stories immediately. Use Deep Rock Galactic when the group prefers a clearer mission structure and does not mind learning combat roles.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

For a recurring weekly group

Lethal Company adds quota pressure that gives each expedition a reason to matter. Deep Rock Galactic offers repeatable missions and role-based variety. Valheim or Sons of the Forest make more sense when the same players can return to one persistent world and maintain shared projects.

For mixed experience levels

Run-based games reduce the cost of a new player’s mistakes because the group can restart with a fresh attempt. Persistent survival games require more explanation about equipment, shelter, resources and the state of the shared world. If your group has only one evening to test a game, a compact run-based option is the safer choice.

Practical questions to answer before buying

  • How many people will actually play? PEAK, Lethal Company and Deep Rock Galactic support groups of up to four; Content Warning supports two to four online players. The available details do not establish current group limits for Valheim or Sons of the Forest, so verify the listing for your edition.
  • Do you want a reset after failure? PEAK and Content Warning center on discrete attempts. Lethal Company, Valheim and Sons of the Forest attach more consequence to resources or persistent progress.
  • Is combat welcome? Deep Rock Galactic has the heaviest combat load. Lethal Company and Sons of the Forest include hostile threats but are not the same kind of class-based shooter. PEAK and Content Warning focus more on movement, avoidance and improvised teamwork.
  • Does everyone enjoy horror? Content Warning presents horror through comedy and filming. Lethal Company leans harder into fear and pressure. Sons of the Forest is the darkest survival-oriented option in this group.
  • Do you need a self-contained evening? Content Warning, Lethal Company and Deep Rock Galactic are easier to organize around individual missions or runs. Valheim and Sons of the Forest are better when the group accepts a longer campaign-like commitment.

A simple decision path

  1. Start with the session shape. If you want short, repeatable attempts, choose PEAK, Content Warning or Lethal Company. If you want one world that persists, choose Valheim or Sons of the Forest.
  2. Choose the dominant pressure. Pick physical traversal for PEAK, oxygen and camera limits for Content Warning, quota scavenging for Lethal Company, or combat objectives for Deep Rock Galactic.
  3. Set the tone. Pick Content Warning for comic horror, Lethal Company for stronger fear, Valheim for open-ended survival, or Sons of the Forest for darker storytelling.
  4. Confirm the party setup. Check the current store listing for platform, edition and player-limit details, particularly for Valheim and Sons of the Forest, whose exact support is not established here.

Bottom line

Content Warning is the best first recommendation for most PEAK groups because it preserves the short co-op runs, communication and funny failures while adding a clear horror objective. Choose Lethal Company when the group wants quota-driven scavenging and more serious fear, Deep Rock Galactic when combat and classes matter most, Valheim for persistent building and exploration, and Sons of the Forest for a darker, story-led survival campaign.
