Games Like Patapon and Ratatan: Rhythm-Action Strategy Alternatives

If you want the closest modern return to Patapon, start with PATAPON 1+2 REPLAY. It preserves the defining loop: you play a god, issue drum-pattern commands, and lead a marching army through battles and expeditions. Ratatan is the forward-looking alternative, adding free movement, side-scrolling action, roguelike runs and online co-op while keeping rhythm commands at the center. For a different interpretation of music-driven play, Cadence of Hyrule makes movement and combat land on the beat, while Crypt of the NecroDancer turns dungeon exploration into a demanding beat-synchronized roguelike.

The best choice depends on whether you want to command a group or control one hero, how strict you want the timing to be, whether you prefer a persistent campaign or repeatable runs, and if multiplayer matters.

Quick comparison

Game How rhythm works Who you control Structure Multiplayer Best for
PATAPON 1+2 REPLAY Drum commands trigger marching, attacking, defending and other army actions. A Patapon army through a divine commander. Traditional campaign progression across missions and upgrades. Not stated in the cited official description. The closest match to the original Patapon formula.
Ratatan Rhythmic commands combine with positioning and active side-scrolling combat. A Ratatan-led group, with free movement alongside the army. Roguelike adventures and repeatable battles. Online co-op for up to four players. Players who want Patapon’s command idea expanded into a modern action roguelike.
Cadence of Hyrule Movement, attacks and defense are performed in time with the music. Link or Zelda directly. Procedurally arranged overworlds and dungeons. Nintendo’s listing includes play-together tags; the exact mode depends on the edition and current listing. A more approachable rhythm-action adventure with Zelda equipment and exploration.
Crypt of the NecroDancer Nearly every step and attack must be synchronized to the soundtrack. A single dungeon-crawling hero. Hardcore roguelike runs with treasure, enemies and shortcuts. Not established by the cited official page. The strictest beat discipline and the purest rhythm-dungeon challenge.

What makes a game “like Patapon”?

Patapon is often called a rhythm game, but its appeal comes from the interaction of several systems. The music is not decoration: a short sequence of beats is an instruction language. You learn patterns for movement, attacks, defense, retreats and special actions, then keep the cadence while watching the battlefield. Your strategic problem is deciding which command the army needs next and finding a safe moment to change patterns.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That makes Patapon different from a conventional rhythm title in which you merely hit notes for a score. It is also different from a real-time strategy game in which commands are issued whenever you like. Timing, formation, enemy behavior and resource management all meet in the same decision. A useful alternative therefore needs more than a soundtrack; it needs a meaningful connection between rhythm and survival.

Five useful comparison axes

  • Command style: Are you selecting patterns for a group, or pressing a beat-dependent button for a single character?
  • Timing strictness: Does a missed beat merely reduce efficiency, or does it leave you exposed immediately?
  • Control perspective: Do you lead an army, move a commander among troops, or directly steer one hero?
  • Run structure: Is progress built around a long campaign, short procedural attempts, or both?
  • Social play: Is co-op officially supported, and does another player share strategic responsibility?

Use these axes rather than the label “rhythm game” alone. Two games can use the same kind of music while offering completely different decisions.

PATAPON 1+2 REPLAY: the closest match

PATAPON 1+2 REPLAY is the clearest recommendation for anyone asking, “What should I play if I want Patapon?” Bandai Namco describes the player as the god who leads the Patapon march. That relationship—divine commands delivered through a repeating drum language—is the feature other games most often approximate but rarely reproduce.

Why it feels like the original

  • You issue commands to an army instead of manually steering every soldier.
  • Rhythm patterns determine the army’s immediate behavior, so the soundtrack and tactics are inseparable.
  • Success depends on selecting the right order of actions, not simply reacting quickly.
  • The campaign format gives your force a continuing sense of advancement rather than resetting after every attempt.

The two-game package is the right choice if your priority is marching formations, learning command patterns and managing a growing force. It is also the safer pick for players who want a defined campaign rather than an experience built primarily around procedural repetition.

Who should choose it

Choose this bundle when your mental picture of Patapon includes tiny soldiers advancing in formation, a godlike commander calling drum orders, and battles that reward anticipation. It is less suitable if you specifically want free character movement, online teamwork or a run-based structure; those are the areas in which Ratatan changes the formula.

Ratatan: a modern successor with roguelike action

Ratatan keeps rhythm commands and strategic positioning but surrounds them with a larger action framework. Ratata Arts describes a game in which a sense of rhythm and strategy is crucial to surviving long adventures while losing as few Cobun as possible. The result is not a straight remake: your Ratatan can move through a side-scrolling battlefield while the group responds to rhythmic orders.

What Ratatan adds

  • Free movement: The Ratatan character is not limited to the fixed march implied by classic command-only play.
  • Side-scrolling combat: Battles unfold across a horizontal action space, making distance and positioning more visible.
  • Roguelike progression: Adventures are structured around repeatable runs, so adapting to a changing attempt matters as much as executing a memorized plan.
  • Large encounters: The official campaign says melee battles can involve more than 100 characters.
  • Co-op: The same campaign supports online cooperation for up to four players.

Those additions make Ratatan the better fit for someone who has already enjoyed Patapon’s command rhythm but wants a game with more movement, more run-to-run variation and a social option. They also make it less of a one-to-one substitute: the player has more direct action to manage, and the roguelike structure changes how progress and failure feel.

How to approach its rhythm

Think of the beat as a shared timing grid for your party rather than a sequence of isolated button prompts. First read the battlefield: identify enemy range, terrain and the direction your group needs to travel. Then choose the command that matches that situation and use the Ratatan’s movement to improve the formation’s position. A technically correct command can still fail if the group is standing in the wrong place.

  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

In co-op, agree on who watches threats and who calls the next objective before a run begins. Four players can create more options, but they can also create conflicting movement and timing decisions. Treat the rhythm as a common clock and communicate changes between patterns instead of improvising separate plans.

Release and platform note

Nintendo UK lists a Ratatan release for Nintendo Switch 2 on 14 October 2026. Because listings, editions and regional catalogs can change, verify the current store entry for your territory and the hardware you own. The date is a product-listing detail, not a statement about every platform or region.

Cadence of Hyrule: beat-based exploration instead of army command

Cadence of Hyrule applies rhythm to a recognizable action-adventure structure. Nintendo’s product description says that every beat of each remixed The Legend of Zelda tune is a chance to move, attack, defend and more. You guide Link or Zelda directly, so the central decision is where your hero should step next rather than which formation order an army should execute.

Why it belongs on this list

  • Movement and combat share one beat grid, making positioning a rhythmic decision.
  • Procedurally arranged overworlds and dungeons give each adventure a changing route.
  • Zelda-style weapons, tools and enemy patterns provide familiar exploration goals.
  • The press kit identifies 25 remixed Zelda tunes, giving the soundtrack a substantial role in the game’s identity.

This is the approachable alternative for readers who like the idea of music-controlled action but do not need army management. The Zelda setting also supplies clear visual feedback: an enemy’s attack range, a collectible’s location and an obstacle’s shape help you decide which beat to use next.

What to expect if you are coming from Patapon

You will not be issuing a drum command that makes a group march, defend or charge. Instead, each beat is an opportunity for your chosen hero to take one meaningful step or action. The procedural layout creates replayability, but the moment-to-moment responsibility is personal: a mistimed move exposes your character directly rather than causing an entire formation to lose its rhythm.

Crypt of the NecroDancer: the strictest rhythm challenge

Crypt of the NecroDancer is the strongest choice when the beat itself is the challenge. Klei presents it as a hardcore roguelike rhythm game in which you explore dungeons, fight enemies, find treasure and dig shortcuts while staying synchronized with the soundtrack.

How its difficulty differs

In Patapon, you can think in terms of a command cycle and coordinate several units. In Crypt, your own movement is the basic timing test. Each step, attack or retreat must fit the current beat, and enemy patterns are designed around that same pulse. Missing the cadence can leave you in the wrong tile when an enemy moves, so learning a room involves both spatial planning and musical consistency.

The roguelike format makes every attempt a lesson. You discover which routes are safe, which enemies require a particular approach and when a shortcut is worth digging. Treasure changes your options during a run, while the procedural structure prevents you from relying on one memorized sequence forever.

Who should play it

Pick Crypt of the NecroDancer if you enjoy demanding timing, quick adaptation and the satisfaction of improving through repeated attempts. It is not the right substitute for a player whose favorite Patapon feature is commanding a large army; its focus is a single hero’s precision and the pressure of a beat that never stops.

Choosing by the experience you actually want

If you want army leadership

Start with PATAPON 1+2 REPLAY. It preserves the group-command perspective and the traditional campaign shape. Move to Ratatan if you want that command idea combined with free movement, side-scrolling battles and repeatable roguelike adventures.

If you want direct hero control

Choose Cadence of Hyrule for a more forgiving adventure built around exploration, equipment and recognizable characters. Choose Crypt of the NecroDancer when timing precision and high-pressure dungeon runs matter more than story-led exploration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want the most replayable structure

Ratatan and Crypt of the NecroDancer are the natural candidates because their runs are designed to vary and be attempted repeatedly. Ratatan varies the journey while retaining group strategy; Crypt makes the individual room and beat pattern the core test.

If you want the gentlest introduction to rhythm-action

Cadence of Hyrule offers familiar adventure conventions that can make beat-based movement easier to understand. You can learn the rhythm while also using equipment, enemy tells and level geometry as ordinary action-game cues.

If you want co-op

Ratatan is the only game in this comparison whose cited official description explicitly confirms online co-op, supporting up to four players. Nintendo’s Cadence of Hyrule listing includes play-together tags, but check the current edition and local options for your system. The cited official page for Crypt of the NecroDancer does not establish a multiplayer mode, so do not assume one is available.

Practical buying checklist

  1. Decide whose actions you want to time. Select PATAPON 1+2 REPLAY or Ratatan for group commands; select Cadence of Hyrule or Crypt of the NecroDancer for direct hero control.
  2. Choose campaign or runs. The Patapon bundle is the traditional-campaign option. Ratatan and Crypt emphasize repeatable roguelike attempts, while Cadence uses procedural overworlds and dungeons.
  3. Set your timing tolerance. If you want rhythm to guide decisions without making every step a severe test, begin with Patapon or Cadence. If you want the beat to punish hesitation, try Ratatan’s active combat or Crypt’s hardcore timing.
  4. Check multiplayer requirements. Confirm whether you need online service, local players or a solo mode, and verify that your region and edition support the feature you expect.
  5. Verify the platform listing. Store pages can change by territory, especially around new hardware releases. Check the current listing immediately before purchase rather than relying on an old platform list.

Common mistakes when picking a Patapon alternative

  • Assuming every rhythm game has command strategy: A beat-matched game may test reflexes without letting you plan an army. Use the control-perspective distinction above.
  • Expecting Ratatan to be a museum-piece remake: Its free movement, side-scrolling action and roguelike structure deliberately broaden the formula.
  • Underestimating procedural games: Cadence of Hyrule, Ratatan and Crypt of the NecroDancer ask you to adapt. Memorizing one route is not the same as mastering the system.
  • Ignoring audio setup: Because timing is gameplay, use a stable audio connection and avoid television or controller delays when possible. If the beat feels late, test another audio output before concluding that your timing is wrong.
  • Buying for a friend without checking modes: The presence of a play-together label does not by itself specify online, local, simultaneous or edition-specific support.

Which game should you play first?

For the exact Patapon feeling, play PATAPON 1+2 REPLAY. For a successor that experiments with the idea instead of preserving it, choose Ratatan. Pick Cadence of Hyrule when you want beat-based exploration with direct control and Zelda equipment. Pick Crypt of the NecroDancer when your priority is the most uncompromising rhythm-dungeon challenge.
