If you are searching for games like Order of the Sinking Star, begin with the four games its official Steam description identifies as design foundations: Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes, Mirror Isles, Promesst 1-3, and Heroes of Sokoban 1, 2, and 3. They are the most defensible starting points because they are named by the developer, not inferred from a loose genre tag.
There is an important correction to the phrase “strategy RPG alternatives.” Order of the Sinking Star is presented as a large, single-player puzzle adventure. Steam lists Adventure, Indie, and Strategy, but the description emphasizes interconnected puzzles, exploration, changing rules, and a mystery rather than party combat, character levels, equipment, or turn-based battles. The alternatives below should therefore be judged by puzzle design, exploration, world structure, and storytelling—not by conventional RPG statistics.

What Order of the Sinking Star actually is
The official Steam description calls the game a “massive puzzle adventure set in a realm of magic and enigma.” That wording is more useful than the broad Strategy label. The central activity is solving connected, hand-crafted puzzles while moving through a world whose rules evolve. The game is designed as a single-player experience that lets you explore at your own pace, leave a difficult challenge, and return later.

The puzzle count is a store-listed figure, and the hundreds-of-hours claim is promotional copy rather than an independently measured completion time. Treat both as an indication of ambition, not a guarantee that every player will receive the same number of hours.

Four worlds, four rule sets
The adventure is divided into four worlds. Each has its own mechanics, characters, and story. Later, those worlds collide and their puzzle systems become intertwined. That structure matters when choosing an alternative: a short collection of unrelated brainteasers will not resemble the way this game asks you to learn one rule set, recognize its logic, and then see it interact with another.
A cast built around abilities
The playable cast includes a queen, thief, warrior, wizard, and talking boat. Their abilities complement one another, so progression is not simply a matter of increasing a character’s attack or defense values. The cast serves the puzzle design: deciding which character or capability can interact with a situation is part of solving it.
Exploration and narrative delivery
The mystery unfolds through gameplay, exploration, characters, and collected notes. You are not only clearing isolated rooms in a fixed order. The connected setting, revisitable challenges, and gradual discovery of each world’s rules are core to the experience. Look for alternatives that treat the environment as part of the puzzle and let you build understanding over time.
Why the “strategy RPG” label can send you to the wrong games
Many strategy RPGs are organized around battles: you position a party on a combat map, spend action points, manage equipment, and develop statistics between encounters. Nothing in the official description establishes that structure for Order of the Sinking Star. Its popular Steam tags include Puzzle, Sokoban, Exploration, Singleplayer, Story Rich, Time Manipulation, and Grid-Based Movement, which point toward systemic puzzle solving rather than a combat campaign.
That distinction changes what “best alternative” means. A good match should share several of these traits:
- Rules that can be learned and recombined: the game introduces mechanics and later asks you to use them together.
- Spatial reasoning: grid movement, pushing, reflection, time manipulation, or another rule that makes position and sequence matter.
- Connected exploration: puzzles belong to a larger place, with optional routes or challenges that can be revisited.
- Story attached to discovery: characters, environmental clues, or notes give context to the problems you solve.
- Low pressure: the single-player, self-paced format rewards experimentation rather than reflexes or online competition.
If what you really want is a party-based combat RPG, use this list cautiously. The officially named foundations are puzzle games that influenced the design, not interchangeable substitutes for a battle-focused RPG.

The four official foundation games
The Steam listing names the following titles as inspirations and foundations. That is strong evidence of creative lineage, but it does not mean each one reproduces the full four-world story, cast, or advertised scale of Order of the Sinking Star. The available store information also does not establish a shared platform list, price, puzzle count, or completion time for every title, so those details should be checked on the current store page before buying.

| Foundation title | What its inclusion tells you | Best reason to investigate it | What is not established here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes | It is explicitly named by the developer as a foundation for the new puzzle adventure. | Start here if you want to trace one of the direct design influences rather than choose by a generic “strategy” label. | The available listing evidence does not state its puzzle count, platforms, price, narrative scale, or whether it matches the four-world structure. |
| Mirror Isles | It is one of the four specifically cited inspirations. | Use it as a second direct reference point when you want to compare how another foundation handles space, rules, and discovery. | Its exact mechanics, length, availability by region, and story format are not specified in the current evidence. |
| Promesst 1-3 | The developer cites the numbered series as a group, indicating that its design influence extends across multiple entries. | A series is useful if you prefer to see a puzzle language develop over several games instead of stopping after one title. | The evidence does not identify which entry is the closest match, nor does it provide current platform or pricing details. |
| Heroes of Sokoban 1, 2, and 3 | The complete numbered set is named as a foundation, and the title itself signals a Sokoban lineage. | Investigate this group if grid-based movement and box-pushing logic are the part of the new game that attracts you most. | The listing evidence does not quantify difficulty, explain how the trilogy’s mechanics differ, or confirm availability on a particular platform. |
Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes
This is one of the clearest starting points because it is named directly by the same official description that presents Order of the Sinking Star. Choose it when your priority is provenance: you want to examine a cited foundation rather than rely on a recommendation assembled from broad tags.
Do not assume that a direct inspiration has the same production scale. The new game advertises more than 1,000 puzzles, four worlds, a multi-character cast, and a mystery that develops across those worlds. The available evidence does not claim that Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes has any of those quantities or structures.
Mirror Isles
Mirror Isles is another named foundation and therefore belongs near the top of any honest “games like” list. It is a useful comparison candidate for readers who care about how a puzzle game makes space, rules, and discovery work together.
Keep the comparison narrow. The official mention establishes influence, not equivalence. There is no supported basis here for promising a similar number of puzzles, the same story emphasis, or the same ability-based cast. Check the current listing for those specifics before treating it as a full replacement.

Promesst 1-3
The reference to Promesst 1-3 covers a set of three entries rather than a single release. That makes it the natural option for a player who enjoys following a puzzle vocabulary across installments. You can compare how each entry introduces, refines, or recombines ideas, then decide whether the series’ progression is more appealing than one large standalone adventure.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

The title range should not be read as a claim that all three games are required, equally available, or identical in structure. The cited store material does not identify a preferred entry, current regional listings, or a combined bundle. Verify those details at the time of purchase.
Heroes of Sokoban 1, 2, and 3
Heroes of Sokoban is the most obvious foundation to inspect if the grid-based and Sokoban-related tags are what caught your attention. Sokoban-style design normally makes movement order, pushing direction, and irreversible-looking positions central to the problem; however, the evidence available for this article does not provide a detailed mechanic-by-mechanic description of the trilogy. Use the name as a pointer, not as proof that every puzzle behaves identically to a classic Sokoban board.
The numbered format also gives you a way to compare scope and complexity within one lineage. Before buying, look for the individual store descriptions, screenshots, save-system information, and whether the entries are sold separately or together.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow the alternatives compare with the new game
Because the four foundations are cited as influences rather than as direct substitutes, compare them along the dimensions that define the experience. The table below separates what is known about Order of the Sinking Star from what still needs checking for each older title.
| Decision factor | Order of the Sinking Star | What to check in an alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Puzzle structure | More than 1,000 interconnected, hand-crafted puzzles; later worlds combine mechanics. | Whether puzzles are linked in a world, presented as separate boards, or arranged as a progression of increasingly complex rules. |
| Rule changes | Four worlds introduce distinct mechanics, characters, and stories before their systems collide. | Whether new mechanics are layered onto earlier ones or reset for each region or chapter. |
| Movement language | Steam tags include Sokoban and Grid-Based Movement, alongside Time Manipulation. | Whether the game emphasizes pushing, timing, reflection, orientation, path planning, or another spatial rule. |
| Exploration | Connected worlds, self-paced discovery, and revisitable challenges. | Whether you can leave a puzzle, reach optional areas, and return without losing progress. |
| Story | A mystery delivered through gameplay, characters, exploration, and notes. | Whether narrative is environmental, character-led, text-based, or intentionally minimal. |
| Scale | Publisher copy says “hundreds of hours” of unique gameplay; this is not an independent playtime test. | Actual puzzle count, chapter count, and the difference between optional content and a main path. |
| Format | Single-player. Steam lists a PC edition; Nintendo’s US listing identifies a digital Switch 2 edition. | Current platform, regional storefront, controller or keyboard support, and whether the edition is digital-only. |
Choose an alternative by the kind of player you are
Choose a direct design connection
If your main question is “What influenced this game?”, select from the four named foundations rather than expanding into an unverified list of vaguely similar puzzle titles. This approach gives you the strongest documented relationship. It also sets the right expectation: you are exploring ingredients of the design, not buying a smaller version of the same adventure.
Choose grid and pushing logic
Start with Heroes of Sokoban 1, 2, and 3 if the grid-based tag and the prospect of Sokoban-style planning are the main draw. Confirm the specific rule set for each entry, because a shared name does not establish identical boards, progression, or difficulty.

Choose a series rather than one large campaign
Investigate Promesst 1-3 if you prefer several related releases. A series can make it easier to stop between games, compare how mechanics evolve, and choose an entry that fits your available time. It will not automatically provide the connected four-world structure or the large advertised puzzle count of the new game.

Use Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes and Mirror Isles as the first two checks when the appeal is discovering a place while solving its problems. The official list confirms their influence, but it does not promise the same notes, characters, or world collision. Read their current descriptions for how story and exploration are actually delivered.
Choose combat, leveling, or party management
None of the four cited foundations is established here as a conventional strategy RPG. If your must-have features are tactical battles, character statistics, loot, or a large party roster, the official description does not support using Order of the Sinking Star as your target. Search by those mechanics instead of by this title’s Strategy tag.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Difficulty, pacing, and the meaning of “hundreds of hours”
The game’s design is intended for patient problem solving. You can explore at your own pace, revisit challenges, and allow a difficult puzzle to remain unsolved while you learn another world’s rules. That makes it different from a linear campaign in which every encounter must be cleared before the next story scene.
The advertised “hundreds of hours” should be read carefully. It is a publisher estimate in the Steam store copy, not a controlled measurement and not a promise that the main route alone takes hundreds of hours. Puzzle difficulty, optional exploration, time spent experimenting, and whether you use hints can produce very different personal totals.
When comparing a foundation game, ask three practical questions:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Can you save, leave, and return to a puzzle without losing your position?
- Are optional challenges clearly separated from the route needed to advance?
- Does the game teach a rule before asking you to combine it with older rules?
Those answers tell you more about day-to-day fit than a raw puzzle count.
Platforms, release date, and digital format
Steam lists an October 8, 2026 release for the PC version and identifies Thekla, Inc. as developer, with Arc Games and Gamirror Games as publishers. Nintendo’s United States listing gives the same October 8, 2026 date for a digital Nintendo Switch 2 edition and marks it as one-player software. Store availability and edition details can vary by country, so confirm the listing for your region.
The official information supports digital editions: Steam offers the game and an official soundtrack as digital store items, while Nintendo labels its Switch 2 edition “Digital.” There is no supported evidence here for a physical game, physical soundtrack, licensed merchandise, or a printed strategy guide. Do not assume that a boxed edition exists simply because the title has a console release.

- Decide whether you want puzzles or combat. If you want tactical battles and RPG progression, this is likely the wrong starting point. If you want exploration, spatial reasoning, and a mystery, continue.
- Pick the design emphasis. Choose Heroes of Sokoban for the clearest grid-and-pushing lead, Promesst 1-3 for a multi-entry lineage, or Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes and Mirror Isles for other direct foundations named by the developer.
- Read the current store page. Check the exact platform, region, price, language support, input options, screenshots, and whether the game is sold as an individual title or collection. Those facts are not established uniformly for the four foundations.
- Compare structure, not just labels. Look for connected spaces, revisitable puzzles, layered mechanics, and the way story is delivered. A game tagged Strategy may still be combat-focused, while a game tagged Adventure may be a closer structural match.
- Choose your edition. For Order of the Sinking Star, the verified options are a Steam PC listing and a Nintendo Switch 2 digital listing dated October 8, 2026. Check regional storefronts before purchase.
- Plan for an open-ended commitment. The new game advertises a very large puzzle supply. If you prefer a compact campaign, select a foundation title only after confirming its actual scope rather than assuming it is similarly extensive.
Store reception and what it can—and cannot—tell you
Steam displayed 97% positive from 1,720 user reviews when accessed on October 13, 2026. That is a date-stamped snapshot, not a permanent score and not a substitute for checking whether the praised features match your preferences. Reviews can change as more players arrive, and they may reflect performance, controls, difficulty, or story priorities that differ from yours.
The strongest stable facts remain the game’s official structure: four distinct worlds, a complementary cast, revisitable single-player exploration, and a large set of interconnected puzzles. Use the review percentage as current context, not as proof that every player will prefer it to one of the foundation games.
Bottom line
For the most evidence-based answer to “games like Order of the Sinking Star,” start with Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes, Mirror Isles, Promesst 1-3, and Heroes of Sokoban 1–3 because the developer names them as foundations. Treat them as influences to investigate, not guaranteed substitutes. The new release is best understood as a large puzzle adventure with strategy-like planning, not a conventional strategy RPG: its defining features are interconnected puzzles, four worlds whose mechanics eventually combine, self-paced exploration, and a mystery discovered through play.
