Empyrion – Galactic Survival is the closest match if you want No Man’s Sky’s combination of planets, ships, mining, crafting, construction and survival pressure. Choose Space Engineers for engineering-driven building, Starfield for a story-led space RPG, Astroneer for approachable cooperative exploration, Elite Dangerous for spacecraft simulation, or Subnautica for concentrated survival discovery in an alien environment.
What makes a game feel like No Man’s Sky?
No Man’s Sky sets a broad baseline: Hello Games describes it as “a game about exploration and survival in an infinite procedurally generated galaxy.” Its loop combines discovering planets, gathering resources, crafting equipment, building bases, flying between worlds, dogfighting in space and fighting on planetary surfaces. It also supports VR, multiplayer through the Space Anomaly for up to 32 players, and continuing major updates.

That combination is unusual. Many alternatives reproduce only one or two parts of it. A game may offer a huge galaxy but no meaningful base construction, or deep survival systems without spacecraft, or a large space setting with authored quests instead of open-ended resource gathering. The best choice therefore depends on which part of No Man’s Sky you want to keep.

Empyrion – Galactic Survival: the closest survival-sandbox match
Empyrion is the strongest recommendation when your priority is the complete No Man’s Sky-style loop rather than a single feature. Its official overview brings together space and planetary exploration, construction, mining, resource gathering, survival, crafting, and both space and land combat.
#1 Best Overall
- Start your journey by customizing your appearance and deciding your Background and Traits
- Venture through the stars and explore more than 1000 planets
- Pilot and command the ship of your dreams.
The defining feature is the connection between orbit and the surface. Empyrion’s exploration description uses the example of seeing a mountain while orbiting a planet, then descending and landing on that mountain. Space is not merely a menu or a separate mission area; moving from orbit to a chosen point on a world is central to the game’s fantasy.
Why choose it
- Survival systems are more explicit and demanding than in a primarily exploration-focused game.
- You can configure and construct ships, bases and stations instead of treating them as fixed vehicles or scenery.
- Mining and resource gathering directly support the next stage of construction and exploration.
- Combat exists both in space and on planetary surfaces, giving equipment and vehicle design practical consequences.
Trade-offs
Empyrion is a sandbox first. If you want a tightly paced, heavily authored story, its open-ended systems may feel less directed. Its strongest fit is on PC, so check the current edition and platform requirements before buying. Expect to spend time learning construction, resource chains and survival routines rather than moving through a prescribed campaign.
Space Engineers: best for engineering and construction
Space Engineers is described by its developer as “a sandbox game about engineering, construction, exploration and survival in space and on planets.” That wording accurately signals its appeal: you are not simply collecting materials to unlock a decorative base. You design functional ships, machines and facilities, then test whether the systems work.
What the building focus means
Construction is the main activity, not a side feature. A ship or station reflects your decisions about layout, propulsion, storage and practical operation. The same experimentation applies to planetary bases and vehicles. Problems become engineering challenges: redesign the structure, change the machinery or build a more suitable craft.
Modes and sharing
The game supports single-player play, scenarios and sharing through Steam Workshop. That makes it suitable both for a solo project and for experimenting with community-created designs or situations. Scenarios provide more direction than a completely blank sandbox, while the underlying systems still reward experimentation.
Who should skip it
Choose another game if you mainly want seamless sightseeing, a large authored cast or a simple crafting menu. Space Engineers asks you to understand how your creations function. Its satisfaction comes from solving construction problems, not from following a conventional space-opera plot.
Starfield: the story-led space RPG
Starfield is the better alternative when “space exploration” means visiting authored worlds, completing quests and developing a character. A February 16, 2026 GamesRadar roundup lists it for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S and presents it as an exploration-focused space RPG.

Starfield’s center of gravity is role-playing: quests, character progression and designed locations. That gives every expedition a stronger narrative context, but it is not a substitute for No Man’s Sky’s continuous survival-crafting loop. Resource gathering and customization support the RPG structure rather than defining an endlessly repeatable planetary-survival routine.

- Includes: Starfield Standard Edition (Disc)
- Travel to the stars in this next-gen RPG from the award-winning creators of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4
- Create a character according to your imagination and explore the endless expanses in unparalleled freedom
- The goal of this epic journey? The answer to humanity's greatest question
Best fit
Pick Starfield if you want named characters, mission chains and a sense that locations were authored for a particular purpose. It is also the clearest console-oriented option in this group for players using PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S. For an Xbox purchase, the relevant physical product path is Starfield for Xbox Series X|S; verify the current regional listing and edition before ordering.
Astroneer: approachable exploration and base building
Astroneer combines gathering, crafting, base building and exploration in a more stylized and approachable package. It is a good choice when you want to construct a shared outpost, expand a small operation and explore with friends without taking on the heavier simulation overhead associated with Space Engineers or Elite Dangerous.
Why it feels accessible
- The visual style and systems are easier to read than a dense engineering simulator.
- Cooperative construction gives groups a clear shared activity: gather materials, expand the base and decide where to explore next.
- Its emphasis on exploration and building preserves the creative side of No Man’s Sky without requiring detailed spacecraft management.
Important limitation
Astroneer is intentionally lighter and more stylized. It should not be chosen if your priority is realistic ship operation, intense survival pressure or a large authored RPG campaign. Current platform and edition availability should be checked before following a retailer link, because the comparison material does not establish a single definitive platform list.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Elite Dangerous: simulation-first space exploration
Elite Dangerous is the specialist choice for players whose favorite part of No Man’s Sky is sitting in a cockpit and deciding where to fly. Comparison coverage places it among the closest alternatives for piloting a ship and exploring a large galaxy.
What it does best
- Navigation and spacecraft operation are the main event.
- Trading and route planning create a spacefaring career rather than a base-building progression.
- The scale and simulation orientation appeal to players who enjoy learning procedures and making choices about where and how to travel.
What it does not reproduce
Elite Dangerous will not recreate No Man’s Sky’s full on-foot crafting loop. Planetary survival, hands-on base construction and gathering materials to build a personal homestead are not its defining activities. Choose it for the ship, not as a one-for-one replacement for every No Man’s Sky system.
Subnautica: concentrated survival discovery
Subnautica keeps the survival and discovery pillars while changing the setting completely. GamesRadar includes it among No Man’s Sky alternatives as a survival-exploration experience, but its world is an alien ocean rather than a broad interplanetary galaxy.
Why survival players choose it
Resource management, equipment upgrades, atmosphere and environmental discovery are tightly connected. You explore to find materials and information, then use what you recover to survive longer and reach unfamiliar parts of the environment. Habitat construction supports that progression and gives expeditions a practical home base.

What to expect
There is no equivalent to hopping between a large collection of planets in a starship. The appeal is concentration: one dangerous environment, carefully paced discoveries and a strong sense of place. If you value tension, preparation and uncovering the history of an alien setting more than open-ended galactic travel, Subnautica may be the more satisfying game.

- TELL YOUR STORY - In Starfield the most important story is the one you tell with your character. Start your journey by customizing your appearance and deciding your Background and Traits. Will you be an experienced explorer, a charming diplomat, a stealthy cyber runner, or something else entirely? The choice is yours. Decide who you will be and what you will become.
- EXPLORE OUTER SPACE - Venture through the stars and explore more than 1000 planets. Navigate bustling cities, explore dangerous bases, and traverse wild landscapes. Meet and recruit a memorable cast of characters, join in the adventures of various factions, and embark on quests across the Settled Systems. A new story or experience is always waiting to be discovered.
- CAPTAIN THE SHIP OF YOUR DREAMS - Pilot and command the ship of your dreams. Personalize the look of your ship, modify critical systems including weapons and shields, and assign crew members to provide unique bonuses. In deep space you will engage in high-stakes dogfights, encounter random missions, dock at star stations, and even board and commandeer enemy ships to add to your collection.
- DISCOVER, COLLECT, BUILD - Explore planets and discover the fauna, flora, and resources needed to craft everything from medicine and food to equipment and weapons. Build outposts and hire a crew to passively extract materials and establish cargo links to transfer resources between them. Invest these raw materials into research projects to unlock unique crafting recipes.
- LOCK AND LOAD - Space can be a dangerous place. A refined combat system gives you the tools to deal with any situation. Whether you prefer long-range rifles, laser weapons, or demolitions, each weapon type can be modified to complement your playstyle. Zero G environments add a chaotic spectacle to combat, while boost packs give players freedom to maneuver like never before.
Choose by the feature you value most
You want the closest overall replacement
Start with Empyrion. It combines survival, mining, crafting, construction, combat and direct travel between orbit and planetary surfaces more completely than the other alternatives listed here.
You want to build machines that actually work
Choose Space Engineers. Its engineering systems and workshop sharing make design, testing and redesign the core loop.
You want quests and character progression
Choose Starfield. It offers a structured RPG journey and authored worlds rather than a primarily self-directed survival sandbox.
You want low-friction co-op building
Choose Astroneer. It retains gathering, crafting and base expansion while keeping the presentation and simulation burden approachable.
You want to be a spacecraft pilot
Choose Elite Dangerous. Its strengths are navigation, trading and operating a ship across a large galaxy, not building an on-foot survival base.
You want the strongest survival atmosphere
Choose Subnautica. Its underwater setting narrows the scope but intensifies resource decisions and environmental discovery.
Multiplayer, platform and control considerations
No Man’s Sky remains unusually broad because it combines a shared social space, VR support and an evolving update history with exploration and survival. An alternative may be better precisely because it is narrower. Before buying, decide whether you need a persistent shared game, local or online co-op, solo scenarios, VR, controller support or mouse-and-keyboard precision.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesQuick Recap
- For a shared, evolving experience: compare the alternative’s current multiplayer model with No Man’s Sky’s Space Anomaly sessions, which support up to 32 players.
- For construction: confirm whether the game supports the input method you prefer; detailed engineering is usually more comfortable with precise controls.
- For console play: Starfield is listed for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in the cited 2026 comparison, while platform availability for Astroneer and the other games should be verified for your region and edition.
- For VR: No Man’s Sky explicitly supports VR, but do not assume an alternative does without checking its current official specifications.
A practical way to decide
- Rank your top two requirements. For example, choose “planetary survival” and “buildable ships” rather than the vague goal of finding another space game.
- Reject mismatches early. If you need on-foot crafting, Elite Dangerous is a poor substitute; if you need authored quests, Empyrion and Space Engineers may feel too open-ended.
- Check the current platform and edition. Availability can differ by region, console generation and storefront, and the comparison evidence does not establish every game’s present platform list.
- Decide how much simulation you enjoy. Space Engineers and Elite Dangerous demand more systems learning; Astroneer reduces that overhead, while Subnautica concentrates it around survival.
- Choose the loop you will repeat. If you expect to spend most of your time designing, choose Space Engineers; if you will explore for materials under pressure, choose Subnautica; if you will fly, trade and navigate, choose Elite Dangerous.
