Games Like Necesse: The Best Colony-Building and Survival Alternatives

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

Core Keeper is the closest overall alternative to Necesse if you want top-down co-op mining, crafting, base building, farming, automation and boss fights. Choose Terraria for a faster 2D action sandbox, RimWorld for deep colony simulation, Starbound for a spacefaring sandbox, or Valheim for third-person 3D survival and cooperative boss progression.

What makes Necesse different?

Necesse combines several genres that are usually kept separate. It is a top-down action-adventure game in a procedurally generated world, but it also includes settlement construction and recruitable specialists. You can mine, craft equipment, explore dungeons, fight monsters and bosses, and expand a settlement. Assigned settlers can perform work, allowing you to spend more time exploring instead of manually handling every resource task.

That colony layer is optional rather than the entire game. A player who prefers combat and exploration can keep the settlement simple, while another can recruit specialists, assign jobs and build a more organised town. This balance is the key to choosing an alternative: most similar games are either stronger action sandboxes with little management or stronger colony simulations with less direct adventuring.

The current Necesse feature set is substantially larger than its early versions. Fair Games ApS’ official press kit lists more than 1,200 new items, 16 new bosses, more than 80 new enemies, a new settlement system, two complete graphics overhauls, a new end-game progression system, performance improvements, and support for Mac, Linux and Steam Deck. The Steam description summarises its premise as: “Build, quest, and conquer across an infinite procedurally generated world.”

Best Necesse alternatives at a glance

Game Best for Camera and world Colony depth Co-op scale Defining trade-off
Core Keeper Closest mechanical match Top-down underground sandbox Light-to-moderate base automation 1–8 players Less emphasis on settlers and a surface world
Terraria Classic 2D action sandbox Side-view, randomly generated worlds NPC town-building rather than colony management Online co-op; player limit depends on hosting setup More combat and item variety, less labour management
RimWorld Deepest colony simulation Top-down, procedurally generated maps Very deep Primarily designed around a single colony; multiplayer requires community solutions Less direct real-time adventuring and boss progression
Starbound Space exploration and modding 2D planets connected by a star map Colonisation and tenant management Online co-op for the full game Progression is more quest- and planet-focused than settlement-driven
Valheim 3D cooperative survival Third-person procedural Norse world Base construction, not a staffed colony 1–10 players No recruitable workforce; greater survival pressure

1. Core Keeper — the closest overall match

Why it feels like Necesse

Core Keeper matches Necesse’s central loop more closely than any other choice: enter a hostile world, mine for resources, improve equipment, construct a useful base, and prepare for increasingly difficult bosses. Its top-down view makes movement, building and combat immediately familiar to Necesse players. The world is an underground cavern rather than a broad surface-and-dungeon landscape, so exploration is organised around tunnels, biomes, ore tiers and boss areas.

The official Steam description calls it “a mining sandbox adventure for 1-8 players.” That eight-player limit makes it especially appealing for larger friend groups. You can divide jobs naturally: one player mines, another farms, another expands the base and others scout or prepare boss arenas. Farming, cooking, storage and automation give the home base a purpose beyond decoration.

Where it differs

  • Core Keeper is built around a subterranean world, while Necesse offers a broader procedurally generated world with settlements and surface exploration.
  • Its base systems support automation and production, but it does not reproduce Necesse’s optional network of recruitable settlers and assigned specialists.
  • The game’s progression is strongly tied to biome resources and boss encounters, so players who prefer a town-management story may find it more systems-focused.

Choose Core Keeper if…

Pick it when your priority is cooperative mining, crafting, farming, base improvement and boss preparation in a top-down perspective. It is the safest recommendation for someone asking for “Necesse but with a bigger co-op focus.”

2. Terraria — the best-known 2D action-sandbox substitute

What carries over from Necesse

Terraria provides the familiar rhythm of digging, fighting, exploring, building and crafting progressively stronger equipment. Its worlds are randomly generated, and the combination of caves, surface biomes, events and bosses creates a long progression curve. You can build houses for allied NPCs, establish a town and customise large structures, while online co-op lets friends share the same world.

Terraria was released on May 16, 2011, according to its Re-Logic Steam listing. Its age is an advantage for content depth: years of updates have produced a very large catalogue of weapons, tools, armour, building materials, decorative objects, enemies and encounters.

Its major limitation as a Necesse replacement

Terraria’s NPCs are residents and vendors rather than a workforce you manage. They unlock services and respond to housing conditions, but they do not create the same settlement-labour layer as Necesse’s settlers. You remain responsible for gathering, crafting and most production. The game is also side-view rather than top-down, which changes how combat, building and exploration feel.

Choose Terraria if…

  • You want the strongest 2D action, boss and equipment progression.
  • You enjoy designing towns but do not need settlers to perform jobs.
  • You want a mature modding and multiplayer ecosystem.
  • You prefer a side-scrolling world with a huge variety of weapons and events.

Terraria is the better pick when “like Necesse” means action sandbox first and colony management second.

3. RimWorld — the strongest colony-management alternative

Why colony-focused players choose it

RimWorld turns the settlement into the main character. You guide a group of colonists through construction, food production, medicine, research, power generation, defence, diplomacy and relationships. The official Steam listing describes it as “a sci-fi colony sim driven by an intelligent AI storyteller.” Its storyteller generates crises and opportunities from colonists’ needs, personalities, health, environment and outside factions.

The simulation covers psychology, ecology, climate, diplomacy, relationships, medicine, trade and combat. A colonist may become injured, fall ill, form a relationship, develop a mental break, lose a body part or gain a new role in the settlement. These interlocking systems produce emergent stories rather than a fixed adventure sequence.

How it differs from Necesse

RimWorld is not a real-time action-adventure game in which you personally explore a dungeon and defeat a boss with a custom loadout. You issue orders from a top-down management view, and combat is tactical rather than direct character control. The world map offers caravans, quests and encounters, but the settlement remains the centre of play.

Its release date was October 17, 2018, according to Ludeon Studios’ Steam listing. The base game has also been expanded by multiple official add-ons listed on that store page; check the current edition and platform before buying because expansion availability can vary.

Choose RimWorld if…

Choose RimWorld when your favourite part of Necesse is assigning work, balancing needs, designing a settlement and dealing with unexpected social or environmental problems. Do not choose it expecting the same immediate combat feel, loot chase or boss ladder.

4. Starbound — the broadest science-fiction sandbox

Exploration across procedural planets

Starbound replaces Necesse’s fantasy-adventure setting with a science-fiction universe of planets connected by a star map. You can explore worlds, gather materials, build structures, farm, establish colonies and customise your ship. The official Steam description says, “In Starbound, you create your own story – there’s no wrong way to play!” That open-ended design makes it suitable for players who value discovery and construction over a single optimal route.

The game supports hundreds of building materials and more than two thousand objects, giving builders an unusually large design vocabulary. Colonisation lets you place tenant objects and attract residents, while farming provides a repeatable source of food and materials. Casual, survival and hardcore modes let you adjust how punishing death and resource management should be.

Co-op and modding

Starbound supports online co-op for its full content. Friends can travel between planets, build together and take on missions as a group. Its long-running PC modding scene adds new quests, objects, races, mechanics and visual changes, although compatibility should be checked whenever multiple mods alter the same systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where it falls short for Necesse fans

  • Its colonists are primarily tenants and quest-givers, not a broad workforce with the same job-assignment focus as Necesse.
  • Planet travel and mission structure can make progression feel more segmented than a single continuously expanding settlement.
  • The side-view perspective changes combat and construction in the same way Terraria does.

Starbound was released on July 22, 2016, according to Chucklefish’s Steam listing. Select it when the appeal of Necesse is the combination of procedural exploration, building and a persistent home base, but you want that formula in space.

5. Valheim — the best 3D survival alternative

A different camera, a similar cooperative rhythm

Valheim moves the formula into a third-person 3D world inspired by Viking mythology. Its procedural map is divided into biomes, each with distinctive resources, enemies and hazards. You gather wood and stone, build structurally convincing halls and fortifications, craft equipment, cook food for temporary bonuses, sail between landmasses and defeat regional bosses.

The Steam listing describes Valheim as “A collaborative exploration and survival game for 1-10 players, set in a procedurally generated afterlife inspired by Viking culture.” The ten-player scale is useful for organised groups, while solo play remains viable if you are comfortable gathering and building alone.

Settlement and survival differences

Valheim has no recruitable settlers who can mine, farm or manufacture items for you. Every major task is performed by players, with limited automation from structures and crafting stations. Food, stamina, weather, enemy raids and equipment durability create more constant survival pressure than Necesse’s optional colony layer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its Steam listing gives a release date of September 9, 2026. Because that date is tied to the listing available in 2026, verify the version and platform you are purchasing; update schedules and feature availability can differ between editions.

Choose Valheim if…

Choose Valheim when you want friends to build a shared settlement, sail to new regions, prepare for biome bosses and physically gather every major resource in a 3D world. It is not the right substitute if delegated settlement labour is essential.

How the alternatives compare on the features that matter

Camera and world structure

  • Top-down: Necesse, Core Keeper and RimWorld keep the play area readable from above, but only the first two are direct action games.
  • Side-view: Terraria and Starbound emphasise vertical building, platforming and 2D combat.
  • Third-person 3D: Valheim adds physical architecture, sailing and spatial navigation at the cost of a less compact view of the whole settlement.

Colony depth

RimWorld is the clear leader for colonist psychology, health, relationships, work priorities and crisis management. Necesse occupies the middle ground by making settlers useful without making management mandatory. Starbound offers colonisation, while Terraria uses NPC housing and services. Core Keeper focuses on production and automation, and Valheim focuses on player-built infrastructure rather than residents.

Combat and progression

Terraria has the broadest 2D combat catalogue and a highly recognisable boss sequence. Core Keeper also uses bosses as major progression gates. Necesse combines equipment progression, dungeons, monsters and bosses with settlement development. Valheim’s bosses unlock biome progression and crafting tiers, but preparation involves food, sailing and 3D logistics. RimWorld’s combat is tactical and event-driven rather than a conventional boss ladder. Starbound mixes missions, planetary threats and gear upgrades.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Exploration and building

Pick Core Keeper for layered underground exploration, Starbound for planet-hopping, Valheim for sailing and biome travel, Terraria for a dense 2D world, and Necesse for a broad procedurally generated world that supports both adventuring and settlement growth. RimWorld is strongest when exploration serves the colony’s needs through caravans, quests or resource runs.

Which game is best for co-op?

Group need Best fit Reason
Two to eight players mining and fighting together Core Keeper Top-down cavern sandbox with an explicit 1–8-player format.
Large 3D group building and boss runs Valheim Supports 1–10 players, shared construction, sailing and regional bosses.
Flexible 2D adventure with many weapons Terraria Strong multiplayer action and a deep equipment catalogue.
Space exploration with friends Starbound Online co-op covers the full planet, mission and building experience.
Solo management stories RimWorld Designed around running one colony and its inhabitants.

Before starting a shared world, agree on roles and difficulty. In Core Keeper and Necesse, separate storage and specialist areas reduce confusion. In Valheim, decide who controls portal naming, boat use and boss summons. In Terraria and Starbound, establish a central base and shared storage conventions before the world fills with duplicate items.

How to choose your Necesse alternative

  1. Decide whether direct combat or management comes first. Choose Core Keeper or Terraria for hands-on action; choose RimWorld for simulation; choose Necesse itself when you want both in one game.
  2. Choose the camera you will enjoy for dozens of hours. Top-down games make settlement layouts easy to read, side-view games favour vertical construction, and Valheim’s 3D view makes architecture and travel more immersive.
  3. Set your preferred survival pressure. Valheim demands food, stamina and equipment preparation. Core Keeper and Terraria are more forgiving in their ordinary exploration loops. RimWorld’s pressure comes from cascading crises rather than hunger alone.
  4. Match the group size. Core Keeper advertises 1–8 players and Valheim 1–10. For larger or irregular groups, confirm the current host, server and platform limits before committing.
  5. Check the role of mods. Starbound and Terraria are strong choices for players who want extensive community additions. RimWorld’s mod ecosystem is particularly influential for simulation systems. Mod support and compatibility can vary by platform and version.
  6. Choose the setting that will sustain exploration. Underground caverns, classic fantasy, science-fiction planets and Viking biomes all change the feel of gathering and progression more than a feature checklist suggests.

Common reasons an alternative feels wrong

“I wanted settlers to do the work.”

Core Keeper and Valheim rely more heavily on player labour, while Terraria’s NPCs mainly provide services. Move to RimWorld for a true workforce simulation, or stay with Necesse if you want settlement jobs to remain optional rather than dominant.

“The combat is not direct enough.”

RimWorld uses orders and tactical positioning, not character-controlled attacks. Terraria, Core Keeper and Valheim are better choices when aiming, dodging, equipment and movement should be in your hands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The world feels too segmented.”

Starbound’s planet-and-mission structure can feel less continuous than Necesse’s world. Terraria or Core Keeper provide a more cohesive local map, while Valheim offers continuity through sailing and connected biomes.

“The survival systems are too demanding.”

Valheim’s food, stamina, weather and equipment routines are central to its design. If you want building and boss fights without as much logistical upkeep, try Core Keeper or Terraria first.

“There is too much to manage.”

RimWorld can overwhelm new players because health, mood, work priorities, storage, power and defence interact. Begin with a small colony, enable a gentler storyteller and add complexity gradually. If you want management to stay secondary, Core Keeper or Necesse is a better fit.

Final recommendations by player type

  • Closest overall: Core Keeper.
  • Best action-sandbox substitute: Terraria.
  • Best deep colony simulator: RimWorld.
  • Best science-fiction sandbox: Starbound.
  • Best 3D co-op survival game: Valheim.
  • Best balance of adventuring and optional settlement management: Necesse itself remains the most specific fit.

Start with Core Keeper if you want the least disruptive transition from Necesse. Choose Terraria when combat and item variety matter more than labour systems, RimWorld when the settlement should generate the stories, Starbound when you want procedural planets and science-fiction building, and Valheim when your group prefers a 3D world where every structure, meal and boss expedition is a shared undertaking.
