If Hope in the City’s promise of sketching evidence, connecting thoughts and uncovering a missing-person mystery appeals to you, start with The Case of the Golden Idol for rigorous deduction, Jenny LeClue—Detectivu for a young female sleuth in a stylized world, or Life is Strange for teenage perspective and consequential choices. Other strong matches include Return of the Obra Dinn, Her Story, Pentiment, The Forgotten City, Paradise Killer, Disco Elysium and Oxenfree.
What makes Hope in the City different?
Hope in the City is an upcoming single-player narrative mystery adventure from Lofty Sky Entertainment Inc. and NAGA Games. You play Hope Song, a 17-year-old aspiring artist who returns home and discovers that her parents are missing. Instead of treating investigation as a checklist of conventional detective actions, the game makes Hope’s art part of the evidence system: you observe places and people, record what you notice as sketches, then combine thoughts until they become new insights and breakthroughs.

The setting is Shenyang, China, and the city is intended to shape the atmosphere rather than serve as anonymous scenery. Steam tags describe a story-rich, nonlinear, noir-tinged adventure with exploration, puzzle solving, emotional storytelling and choices that matter. That combination creates a specific target: a mystery in which the protagonist’s personal viewpoint, the act of noticing and the mood of an urban place are as important as the final answer.
The launch information is not yet consistent. Steam lists November 11, 2026, while an official community announcement gives November 10, 2026 for Steam and Xbox. Treat the game as unreleased until the store listing and the developer’s announcement agree, and verify the date immediately before buying or scheduling play.

Closest matches for connecting clues
The Case of the Golden Idol
This is the most direct recommendation if your favorite part of Hope in the City is turning observations into a breakthrough. Each case presents a carefully composed scene containing bodies, objects, expressions and other details. You inspect everything, fill in identities and events, and submit a theory. The game does not usually tell you which clue to select next; your job is to notice relationships and test a complete explanation.
Its presentation is deliberately pixelated and often comic, so it does not reproduce Hope’s grounded urban atmosphere. The trade-off is investigative precision: there is little inventory busywork, and success depends on reading a scene correctly. Choose it when deduction matters more to you than playing a teenage protagonist or wandering a realistic city.

Return of the Obra Dinn
Return of the Obra Dinn turns an abandoned merchant ship into a logic grid. A supernatural watch lets you revisit the instant of each death. You identify crew members, passengers, relationships and causes of death by comparing clothing, accents, locations and repeated events. Answers are confirmed in groups, which encourages you to keep a notebook and revisit uncertain assumptions.
The story is fixed rather than choice-driven, and the protagonist is an insurance investigator rather than an artist. Its stark one-bit visual style is also far removed from Shenyang. Still, it shares Hope’s strongest structural idea: progress comes from connecting small observations until a larger explanation becomes possible.

Her Story
Her Story gives you a computer database containing fragments of police interviews. You begin with a search term, watch the returned clips and choose new words suggested by what you hear. The interface limits how many results it displays, so discovering useful vocabulary is part of the puzzle. There is no conventional map, inventory or quest marker; your notes and theories supply the structure.
This is a compact, intimate mystery rather than an explorable city. It also uses live-action video and a single interview subject instead of sketches. Pick it if “nonlinear investigation” means deciding which fragment to view next and deciding for yourself when the account makes sense.
Best alternatives with a young female or artist perspective
Jenny LeClue—Detectivu
Jenny LeClue is a young detective in an illustrated adventure built around exploration, conversations and environmental puzzles. The small-town setting, expressive art and curious heroine make it a natural choice for readers drawn to Hope’s age and outsider perspective. Its playful narration also makes the act of solving feel like a storybook detective exercise.
The mystery follows a more conventional adventure structure than Hope’s thought-combination system, and its tone is lighter. Choose it when you want a female lead, hand-drawn presentation and accessible investigation without the heavier noir mood.
Life is Strange
Life is Strange follows Max Caulfield, a teenager investigating a disappearance while navigating friendships, school life and a supernatural ability to rewind moments. The central activity is not building a formal evidence board. Instead, you explore spaces, listen closely, revisit interactions and decide how Max responds. Earlier choices can change later scenes, relationships and the emotional meaning of evidence.

- [Easy Disassemble] Making incidental repairs quick and easy! Very nice, flexible cable
- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
It is episodic and strongly character-led, so the mystery shares space with coming-of-age drama. If Hope’s appeal is seeing a young woman interpret an unsettling homecoming through her own feelings, this is a better fit than a purely logical detective game. If you want strict deduction with objectively correct answers, choose The Case of the Golden Idol instead.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Pentiment
Pentiment is the standout choice for the intersection of art and investigation. Andreas Maler is an artist whose work and social position shape how he moves through a sixteenth-century community. Murders, accusations and old documents unfold over years, and your decisions affect people you may meet much later.
Its historical setting and dialogue-heavy pace differ sharply from a contemporary Chinese city, but the game understands that an artist notices details other characters overlook. It also treats investigation as interpretation: reputation, class, religion and local memory can be as important as physical proof. Select it for a slower, more literary mystery with lasting consequences.
Atmospheric narrative adventures with meaningful choices
The Forgotten City
The Forgotten City places you in a time loop governed by a social rule: one person’s wrongdoing can doom an entire settlement. You learn the residents’ routines, use information gained in one loop to alter the next, and test competing explanations for the city’s crisis. Knowledge accumulates even when the day resets.
This structure rewards the same behavior Hope encourages—observe first, connect facts, then act. The protagonist is not a teenager and the setting is ancient rather than urban, but the investigation feels active rather than cinematic. Multiple routes and endings make it a strong choice if “choices that matter” is more important to you than a sketchbook interface.

Oxenfree
Oxenfree follows a group of teenagers exploring an island where radio signals open a supernatural mystery. Conversations occur while you walk, and selecting responses changes friendships, information and later encounters. The game’s strength is its sound design, nighttime landscapes and uneasy pauses between ordinary teenage banter and the unknown.
There is less formal clue management than in Hope in the City. You will not assemble a detailed deduction board. Choose it for atmosphere, a young cast and dialogue that feels immediate; avoid it if your priority is solving a case through explicit evidence combinations.
Paradise Killer
Paradise Killer gives you a large island, a murder case and the freedom to gather evidence in almost any order. Lady Love Dies, an exiled investigator, interviews suspects, examines locations and decides when to hold a trial. You can present a persuasive theory before every fact is settled, which makes judgment itself part of the design.
The neon architecture, demonology and eccentric cast are intentionally extravagant rather than realistic. Its open-ended structure is valuable for players who want to choose their route through a mystery and live with uncertainty. The protagonist is an experienced detective, so it offers a very different perspective from Hope’s teenage artist.
Disco Elysium
Disco Elysium is a detective role-playing game in which conversations, internal thoughts and personal skills generate leads. Your damaged investigator can pursue contradictory political, emotional and factual explanations, and the game accommodates failure instead of treating every missed check as a restart.
Best Value
It is substantially more dialogue-heavy and mechanically role-playing-focused than Hope in the City. There is no sketch-based evidence loop, and the tone can be bleak, absurd or philosophical. Choose it when you want an urban investigation shaped by voice, ideology and psychology rather than visual puzzle solving.

Case-file deduction versus narrative discovery
Choose The Case of the Golden Idol or Return of the Obra Dinn when you want every scene to function as a problem with a defensible solution. Choose Her Story when searching and ordering fragments is more appealing than walking through locations. These games keep the investigation concentrated, so they are good follow-ups if you enjoy Hope’s “connect thoughts” idea but have limited time for free roaming.
Dialogue-led mystery versus puzzle-led mystery
Disco Elysium, Pentiment and Life is Strange put conversations and relationships at the center. Their mysteries advance through what people reveal, conceal or misunderstand. The Case of the Golden Idol and Return of the Obra Dinn ask you to infer events from visual evidence with less emphasis on sustained character dialogue. Neither approach is universally better: select according to whether you want to read people or read scenes.
How to choose your first game after Hope in the City
- Decide whether deduction or emotion comes first. For strict logic, begin with The Case of the Golden Idol. For relationships and a teenage viewpoint, begin with Life is Strange.
- Choose your preferred evidence format. Pick Return of the Obra Dinn for visual reconstruction, Her Story for searchable video fragments, or Pentiment for interviews, documents and social context.
- Set your tolerance for ambiguity. The Forgotten City and Paradise Killer let you test theories through multiple routes. The case-focused games expect more precise answers.
- Match the atmosphere. For noir and melancholy, try Disco Elysium. For supernatural tension among teenagers, try Oxenfree. For illustrated warmth, try Jenny LeClue—Detectivu.
- Check the current edition and platform. Store listings can change by region, and some games have separate console and computer releases. Confirm language support, controller options and whether your platform receives the complete edition.
A practical play order
If you want a progression from familiar to experimental, start with Jenny LeClue—Detectivu, then play The Case of the Golden Idol to sharpen clue analysis. Move to Life is Strange for branching personal choices, Pentiment for art and historical context, and The Forgotten City for systemic investigation. Finish with Return of the Obra Dinn or Her Story when you are ready for games that give you fewer conventional prompts and expect you to build the case yourself.
Players who prefer open exploration can swap in Paradise Killer early. Players who mainly want writing and character psychology can begin with Disco Elysium. The order is not a difficulty ranking; it simply moves from guided adventure conventions toward more self-directed deduction.
What none of these games reproduces exactly
Hope in the City’s distinctive combination is unusually specific: a 17-year-old artist, missing parents, sketches treated as evidence, thought combinations that produce breakthroughs, a nonlinear mystery and Shenyang as an active urban presence. The alternatives divide those qualities among different designs. Pentiment comes closest to the artist-as-investigator idea; Life is Strange and Oxenfree come closest to teenage subjectivity; The Case of the Golden Idol and Return of the Obra Dinn come closest to disciplined inference; and Paradise Killer comes closest to choosing your own investigative route.
That distinction matters when setting expectations. A game can be an excellent alternative because it satisfies one reason you are interested in Hope, while still differing in tone, period, protagonist, pacing or puzzle design. Use the comparison axes above to choose the specific element you want next rather than looking for a title that copies every feature.
