The best game to play while waiting for Hela is A Short Hike if you want quiet nature exploration, Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles if you want a larger open world with farming and crafting, and Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition if co-op care and emotional storytelling matter most. Hela: Of Mice & Magic is planned for PC in Q4 2026, so these are available alternatives for the specific parts of its promise that you can enjoy now.
Hela is described as a heartfelt 3D open-world adventure set in a natural, Northern Sweden-inspired world. Its loop combines free-form exploration, puzzles, quests, story fragments, secrets, and gathering ingredients to brew magical remedies. It supports solo play, online co-op, and local co-op, with a controller recommended. No existing game matches every one of those features, so the useful way to choose is to identify which part of Hela attracted you first.

What Hela is promising, and what an alternative needs to match
Hela is not currently a released game. The developer’s Steam Community FAQ places its PC launch in Q4 2026. The FAQ says players can explore at their own pace, discover story fragments, complete quests, and uncover secrets whenever they choose. The Steam store description presents it as a 3D open-world adventure about care, courage, and what even the smallest characters can accomplish.

That combination creates several separate needs:
- Gentle exploration: a world that rewards wandering instead of demanding constant combat or timed objectives.
- Magic and nature: environments, creatures, ingredients, or remedies that make the setting feel enchanted rather than merely realistic.
- Puzzles and traversal: environmental problems and movement challenges as important as fighting.
- Flexible pacing: room to fish, gather, investigate, or follow a side path without pressure.
- Shared play: online or couch co-op for players who want to explore with someone else.
- Heartfelt storytelling: relationships and small acts of care rather than a purely plot-driven fantasy quest.
The alternatives below are deliberately different. A Short Hike is smaller and shorter, Yonder is broader and more life-sim oriented, Spiritfarer is more management-heavy and emotionally intense, and Wytchwood is the witchcraft-focused option whose current feature details should be checked before buying.

A Short Hike: the closest match for peaceful wandering
A Short Hike is the strongest choice when “games like Hela” means climbing through a beautiful natural landscape at your own speed. Its Steam description asks you to hike, climb, and soar through the mountainside landscapes of Hawk Peak Provincial Park while making your way to the summit. You can choose free-form routes, search for hidden treasures, fish, swim, and take detours simply because they look interesting.
The game’s scale is intentionally modest. The park is compact, the objective is easy to understand, and the adventure can be completed far more quickly than a conventional open-world RPG. That is an advantage if you want a concentrated dose of calm exploration rather than a long checklist of systems. It is also the main reason not to treat it as a one-for-one replacement: there is no documented online or local co-op, and its world does not offer Hela’s remedy-centered progression.
Choose it if you want
- Quiet movement through mountains, water, and woodland.
- Freedom to change direction without a prescribed quest order.
- Small discoveries, collectibles, and optional activities instead of grinding.
- A low-stress game that can be finished in a short session or revisited for missed secrets.
Skip it if you need
- Two-player exploration.
- A large world with farming, crafting chains, or extensive quest lines.
- Spell-making or a deep magical inventory.
For a player waiting for Hela’s release, A Short Hike is the cleanest temporary substitute because it reproduces the mood and movement philosophy without pretending to reproduce the scale.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles: the larger open-world alternative
Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles is the better fit if the phrase “open-world adventure” matters more to you than the exact remedy-brewing premise. Steam describes a relaxing adventure in Gemea, a world with eight environments ranging from tropical beaches to snow-capped summits. Its exploration is supported by a broader set of life-sim activities: crafting, farming, fishing, and fantasy-themed discovery.

- Supported Multi-Platform:Switch/Switch 2 (NO support wake-up function)/iOS/Android/Windows PC (Notice:Not compatible with Xbox, PlayStation or GeForce Now, For game platforms not mentioned, please consult customer service before buying)
- Connection modes:Wired/Bluetooth/Wireless Dongle(Connect to PC via Bluetooth : Select iOS (phone) mode, but it's not recommended; Dongle is more stable)
- 【Innovative Intelligent Interactive Screen】Manba One V2 wireless game controllers create a new era of controller screens; Equipped with a 2-inch display, no App & software needed, you can set the pc controller directly through the screen visualization, More convenient operation
- 【Micro Switch Button】Manba One wireless controller has Micro Switch Button and ALPS Bumper; The 6-axis gyroscope function makes switch games more immersive
- 【Customize Your Own Controller】The intelligent interactive screen allows you to easily set vibrations, buttons, joysticks, lights, etc., without the need for complex key combinations; 4 configurations can be saved to unlock your own gameplay for different games; The 4 back keys support macro definition settings, and you can activate the set character's ultimate move with one click
That breadth changes the rhythm. Instead of spending most of your time following a compact traversal route, you can move between regions, improve your character’s routine, tend projects, and decide which activity sounds appealing. The result feels more like a gentle sandbox than a tightly authored puzzle journey. It is a useful recommendation for players who want to inhabit a world for many hours, but less exact for anyone primarily interested in Hela’s ingredient gathering and magical remedies.
Why it works for Hela fans
- World scale: eight distinct environments provide the broadest documented setting among these alternatives.
- Activity variety: farming, fishing, crafting, and exploration let you set your own agenda.
- Family-friendly tone: its presentation is positioned as relaxing and welcoming rather than combat-focused.
- Fantasy setting: the world supports the feeling of discovering a place with its own magical ecology.
Important trade-off
Yonder does not replace Hela’s announced co-op modes. It is a solo experience, so choose it for breadth and self-directed activity rather than shared play. Its systems also ask for more routine management than A Short Hike; if you prefer a short, uncluttered adventure, the additional farming and crafting may feel like overhead.
Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition: the strongest co-op and relationship choice
Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition is the closest recommendation for players drawn to Hela’s themes of care and companionship, especially when co-op is essential. Steam calls it “a cozy management game about dying.” You operate a boat, explore, care for spirit passengers, farm, fish, cook, and craft. A second player can join locally as Daffodil the cat.
This is not a lighthearted substitute in every respect. Its central subject is death, and its stories address disability, mental illness, and suicide. Those themes are handled within a gentle management framework, but the emotional impact can be substantial. Check the game’s content suitability before choosing it for a younger player or a family co-op session.

- 1000Hz Polling Rate on PC: Experience ultra-responsive gaming with a 1000Hz polling rate on PC, available through both wired and 2.4G wireless connections. This ensures instantaneous input registration, reducing lag and optimizing your performance for the most competitive gameplay.
- GameSir Nexus App: The G7 Pro is compatible with the upgraded GameSir Nexus app, which brings a significant upgrade over the original. It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.
What the co-op actually changes
Local co-op is optional rather than a separate multiplayer campaign. One player controls the main character while the second controls Daffodil, allowing both people to participate in boat life and activities. That makes it a strong couch-play choice, but it does not establish the online co-op experience announced for Hela.
Why choose it anyway
- Character relationships are central rather than decorative.
- Cooking, farming, fishing, and crafting give co-op partners useful shared routines.
- The boat acts as a moving home base, creating a clear sense of progression.
- The tone is compassionate and reflective, matching the caring side of Hela more closely than a conventional fantasy adventure would.
Choose Spiritfarer when emotional connection and playing beside someone on one PC outrank open-world freedom. Avoid it when you want a consequence-free, purely cheerful adventure.
Wytchwood: the witchcraft-focused option to investigate
Wytchwood belongs on a shortlist for anyone whose priority is witchcraft and magical crafting. Its official Steam store page confirms the game, but the available description does not establish enough detail to make a reliable claim about its current co-op status, exact progression structure, or the size of its world.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

That uncertainty matters because those features determine whether it is a practical Hela substitute. Before purchasing, open the current PC listing and confirm:

- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
- Whether the game supports the type of multiplayer you need, if any.
- Which Windows requirements and controller inputs are listed now.
- How exploration, gathering, and crafting are structured in the current edition.
- Whether the tone and content suit the people who will play.
Treat Wytchwood as the thematic witchcraft pick, not as a confirmed match for Hela’s open-world co-op design.
Compare the alternatives by the feature that matters most
| What you care about | Best choice | Why | What you give up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most peaceful nature wandering | A Short Hike | Free-form routes, climbing, soaring, swimming, fishing, and hidden treasures in a compact mountain park | Large-world scale, co-op, and deep crafting |
| Largest documented world | Yonder | Eight environments, from beaches to snowy peaks, plus several optional activities | Hela-style co-op and a focused remedy loop |
| Best local co-op substitute | Spiritfarer | Two-player couch play with Daffodil and shared care, cooking, farming, and boat tasks | A heavier story about death and other mature subjects |
| Most explicitly witchcraft-oriented | Wytchwood | Its Steam listing makes witchcraft and magical crafting the reason to investigate it | Feature, multiplayer, and availability details require a current listing check |
| Shortest commitment | A Short Hike | Compact scope and a straightforward summit goal | Less room for long-term progression |
| Most management activity | Yonder or Spiritfarer | Both add farming, crafting, fishing, cooking, or boat routines | More menus and recurring tasks than a pure exploration game |
Games like Hela with co-op: what PC players should know
Hela’s store listing advertises both online and local co-op, so it is reasonable to make multiplayer a deciding factor. Among the documented alternatives here, Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition is the only one with a clearly stated co-op mode, and that mode is local rather than online. You should not assume that a game’s “family-friendly” or “cozy” label implies multiplayer.
If you are buying for two people, check the exact platform and mode before installing:
- Local co-op: confirm that the game supports two input devices or a keyboard-and-controller arrangement on one PC.
- Online co-op: look for an explicit online multiplayer listing; do not infer it from screenshots or community comments.
- Shared progression: determine whether both players retain progress or whether only the host’s save advances.
- Content fit: co-op does not make a mature story suitable for children; Spiritfarer needs particular care because of its themes.
How the puzzle and exploration experiences differ
Hela’s announced design puts puzzles inside a freely explorable natural world. The alternatives divide that promise into separate strengths. A Short Hike emphasizes traversal itself: climbing, gliding, swimming, and finding your own route. Yonder emphasizes regional discovery and activity choice, with less evidence of a puzzle-first structure. Spiritfarer places exploration in service of boat upgrades, errands, and passenger stories. Wytchwood may appeal to players who want magical problem-solving, but its current store information does not support a precise comparison.
Best Value

Choose a traversal game if the satisfaction comes from reaching a lookout or finding a hidden path. Choose a sandbox if you would rather decide whether today is for fishing, farming, or crafting. Choose a management adventure if the puzzle is how to organize a growing set of responsibilities around the needs of other characters.
Controller and PC setup for a Hela-style experience
Hela’s Steam listing recommends a controller. For a PC player, an XInput-compatible controller is the safest general recommendation because Windows games commonly recognize that input standard without extra remapping software. The recommendation is about compatibility, not a particular brand.
- Connect the controller before launching the game.
- In Steam, open the game’s controller settings and confirm that the device is detected.
- Start with the game’s default layout, then adjust camera sensitivity and vibration if needed.
- For local co-op, verify that each player’s device appears separately before beginning a save.
- If input is missing, test the controller in another game, reconnect it, and check whether Steam Input is enabled or disabled as the game requires.
A keyboard and mouse remain practical for menu-heavy games, especially management-focused play. A controller is usually more comfortable for analog movement, climbing, gliding, and couch co-op.
Which game should you play while waiting for Hela?
- Pick A Short Hike if your priority is a peaceful walk through nature with almost no friction.
- Pick Yonder if you want the largest world, multiple biomes, and a longer list of farming, fishing, and crafting activities.
- Pick Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition if you want local co-op and stories built around caring for characters, and you are comfortable with its mature subject matter.
- Investigate Wytchwood if witchcraft is the deciding theme, but confirm its current features and multiplayer information on Steam before buying.
None of these games should be presented as a complete replacement for Hela. Hela’s planned combination of open-world freedom, magical remedy brewing, puzzles, nature, and both online and local co-op remains its own proposition. The practical strategy is to use the alternatives to isolate the part you want now: A Short Hike for calm movement, Yonder for breadth, Spiritfarer for co-operative care, and Wytchwood for a witchcraft-led direction that still needs a current feature check.
