Games Like Ghost of Yōtei: Which Samurai Adventure Should You Play Next?

If you want another historical Japanese adventure after Ghost of Yōtei, start with Rise of the Ronin for the closest open-world samurai match. Choose Assassin’s Creed Shadows for stealth and two distinct protagonists, or Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice for demanding sword fights and boss-focused action. The right pick depends on which part of Yōtei you want more of—not on finding a game that plays exactly the same.

What makes a game like Ghost of Yōtei?

Ghost of Yōtei launched exclusively on PS5 on October 2, 2025. It is not a direct story sequel to Ghost of Tsushima: PlayStation says it takes place several hundred years later and evolves that game’s design and mythos. Jin Sakai does not appear. PlayStation’s game page and FAQ clarify the relationship.

That distinction matters when choosing what to play next. “Similar” could mean exploring a large world, playing a samurai, using stealth, enjoying cinematic action, or testing yourself in difficult duels. Those qualities overlap, but none of the alternatives below is a one-for-one substitute.

  • Want a historical open world and a samurai role? Start with Rise of the Ronin.
  • Want stealth and more than one approach to combat? Consider Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
  • Want demanding sword combat more than open-world exploration? Pick Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
  • Haven’t played the earlier game in the series? Ghost of Tsushima is the clearest way to experience the design lineage.

Game Best fit How it differs Platform and other practical details
Rise of the Ronin Historical Japanese open-world adventure with a samurai role Set in late-19th-century Japan, rather than Yōtei’s earlier period; its story includes choices. PS5 exclusive according to PlayStation. Story missions support online co-op for up to three players; online play requires PlayStation Plus. Easy, normal, and hard modes can be changed at any time.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Japan setting, stealth, exploration, and contrasting playstyles Switches between Naoe, a shinobi, and Yasuke, a samurai, in late-Sengoku Japan. Ubisoft lists PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Amazon Luna, Apple-silicon Mac, and Windows PC. Check the relevant regional store for current availability.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Precise, high-pressure sword combat, stealth, and boss encounters More combat- and boss-focused than an open-world exploration adventure; expect a different balance from Yōtei. The official overview describes a late-1500s Sengoku setting, stealth, vertical traversal, prosthetic tools, and direct combat. The cited official page does not establish a current platform list.
Ghost of Tsushima Closest series context and design lineage It is the earlier game whose design and mythos Ghost of Yōtei evolves; it is not required as a story prequel. PlayStation identifies it as its 2020 hit in the Yōtei FAQ. The cited material here does not establish a current platform list.

Choose Rise of the Ronin for the closest open-world samurai match

Rise of the Ronin is the strongest fit if you want a historical Japanese setting, a samurai role, and an open world together. PlayStation describes its setting as late-19th-century Japan and highlights a story shaped by choices. That makes it a structural match for open-world adventure, not a match for Yōtei’s exact era or story.

#1 Best Overall
Ghost of Tsushima - PlayStation 4
  • Available Now - Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, a new cooperative multiplayer experience inspired by Japanese folk tales and mythology.
  • Beyond war, ancient beauty endures: Uncover the hidden wonders of Tsushima in this open-world action adventure.
  • The rise of the Ghost: Forge a new path and wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Tsushima.

Its practical differences may decide the choice: it is listed as a PS5 exclusive, and story missions can be played online with up to three players. PlayStation Plus is required for online play. The game offers easy, normal, and hard difficulty settings that can be changed at any time. See PlayStation’s Rise of the Ronin page for the listed features.

Choose Assassin’s Creed Shadows for stealth and two playstyles

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a better fit if the appeal is exploring Japan while shifting between stealth and a more direct samurai approach. Ubisoft presents Naoe as a shinobi and Yasuke as a samurai in late-Sengoku Japan, giving the two protagonists complementary playstyles rather than one shared approach.

Availability can vary by region and change, so confirm the listing for your local store before buying. Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows page also names a Complete Official Guide by Piggyback; it does not establish a guide’s current price or stock.

Choose Sekiro for difficult, focused sword combat

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is the combat-first option, not the closest match for world structure. Its official description follows the One-Armed Wolf in late-1500s Sengoku Japan and emphasizes stealth, vertical traversal, prosthetic tools, ninja abilities, and direct combat. GameSpot’s editorial comparison characterizes it as more challenging and boss-focused than Ghost of Tsushima, useful context if you are deciding whether you want duels and bosses to take priority over broad exploration.

For the game’s own overview, see the official Sekiro site. For the comparative framing on difficulty and focus, see GameSpot’s comparison of games like Ghost of Tsushima.

Play Ghost of Tsushima for the series connection

If you have not played Ghost of Tsushima, it is the most direct choice for understanding the design context behind Ghost of Yōtei. PlayStation calls Yōtei an evolution of the 2020 game’s design and mythos, while making clear that the newer game is not a direct narrative sequel. That means you can play either one without needing to follow Jin Sakai’s story first.

A quick decision checklist

  • Prioritize open-world exploration plus a samurai role: Rise of the Ronin.
  • Prioritize stealth, Japan, and contrasting protagonists: Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
  • Prioritize harder, focused sword fights and bosses: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
  • Prioritize the closest design lineage: Ghost of Tsushima.
  • Need co-op or a particular platform: compare the platform and online-play details above, then verify current local store availability.

World structure, combat difficulty, stealth versus direct combat, historical setting, platform and co-op, and story choices are separate axes. A useful way to narrow the choice is to name the one you care about most before comparing titles. One player, for example, asked for a tight tutorial, little handholding, and a huge world to explore at their own pace; that is one person’s preference, not a general measure of what players want. The discussion shows how specific preferences can guide a recommendation.
