It combines a cinematic samurai story, katana and bow combat, stealth, horseback travel and an explorable Japanese island, and it has a version built for PS5. Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone PS5 game starring Atsu in rural northern Japan around Mount Yōtei during the 1600s, roughly 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima. Because it introduces a new hero and region rather than continuing Jin Sakai’s plot, you can use the alternatives below according to the experience you want—not only by which game shares the same setting.

What Ghost of Yōtei sets as the benchmark
PlayStation announced Ghost of Yōtei for PS5 on October 2, 2025. Sucker Punch describes it as a standalone story of healing and redemption, told through Atsu in the northern Japanese landscape around Mount Yōtei. The game belongs to the same design lineage as Ghost of Tsushima, but it is not presented as a direct continuation of Jin Sakai’s story.

- Open-world freedom: whether you can roam a broad landscape, discover activities and approach objectives in your own order.
- Combat feel: whether fights center on readable sword exchanges, a broad weapon system, character builds or high-difficulty mastery.
- Stealth: whether hiding, ambushing and separating enemies are central tools or optional tactics.
- Historical setting: the period and region of Japan, which can change the weapons, factions and story conflicts.
- Narrative tone: a focused cinematic journey versus a more choice-driven or systems-heavy role-playing structure.
- PS5 presentation: a native PS5 release versus older PS4 software that runs through backward compatibility.
- Physical availability: whether an official PS5 disc or Blu-ray option is documented.
The four recommendations are not interchangeable. The table gives the fastest way to identify the right direction, followed by the details that explain each trade-off.

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut: the closest overall match
If your reason for playing Ghost of Yōtei is the blend of cinematic samurai drama and free exploration, start here. Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is the only recommendation that directly mirrors the same broad formula: an open-world Japanese setting, katana combat, bow attacks, stealth ambushes, horseback travel and a story-led adventure. It is also available in a PS5 version, so you are not moving to an older-generation presentation simply to get a similar premise.
What carries over best
- Samurai fundamentals: the katana remains the central tool, while the bow gives you a ranged approach before or during a fight.
- Flexible encounters: you can confront enemies openly or use stealth ambushes, matching the choice between honorable duels and tactical infiltration that many Yōtei players expect.
- Roaming rather than menu selection: horseback exploration makes travel part of the adventure instead of a sequence of isolated missions.
- A substantial package: the Director’s Cut includes the main Tsushima campaign, the Iki Island expansion and Legends online co-op.
Where it differs from Yōtei
Ghost of Yōtei is a new standalone story set around Mount Yōtei in 1600s northern Japan, while Ghost of Tsushima follows its own island, cast and campaign. The shared design language is the reason to choose it; it is not a substitute for Atsu’s story or the specific geography of Hokkaido’s northern region.
The available descriptions do not establish a single cross-game statistic for sales, players or review scores, so there is no defensible number that proves one title is universally better. The practical evidence is the overlap in documented systems and the native PS5 version.
Choose it when
Pick Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut when you want the nearest match in structure, tone and presentation, or when you specifically want a PS5 disc option. It is also the least disruptive choice if you prefer a focused samurai adventure over a heavily role-playing-driven system.
Rank #2
- You are free to pick your fights against the Kami in any order. The game features a dynamic difficulty system where each enemy strength is defined by the player’s chosen path. This means that the very same Kami fought at the very beginning could also be the final boss in a different route. Hope to never leave the one you struggle most to fight last!
- Besides sword attacks, dodges, head stomps and other basic abilities, Rei will learn a completely new skill for each defeated Kami. Those will provide further depth to your combat arsenal, be it a stronger dash, a weapon that can execute enemies, the ability to heal and many more!
- Player choice is the ultimate power. Taking into account the vastly distinct enemies’ patterns and unique skills granted upon each victory, you will be able to decide how to approach every challenge. It won’t be easy either way, but you can always go back and try something different.
- Gurei is a game about fighting strong enemies, but that’s not all. The Kami inhabit a surreal castle located between the human and spirit worlds. After each victory, Rei comes closer to the realm of spirits, starting to encounter peculiar characters from Japanese mythology. These creatures will add novelty and strangeness to your journey, providing commentary, unique animations, side objectives and obscure secrets.
- You will get to know the different Kami quite well. When Rei defeats them, she absorbs their power and their personality. The defeated Kami will be carried around wherever Rei goes, and they’ll surely have stuff to talk about. Sometimes their remarks will be useful information that builds the player’s understanding of the lore and the game mechanics, but sometimes they will be... not so helpful, to put it briefly. Good luck!
Rise of the Ronin: the best choice for combat variety and historical choices
Rise of the Ronin takes the samurai premise in a more combat-focused and role-playing-oriented direction. Team NINJA places it in 1863, during the Bakumatsu period when the Tokugawa shogunate is collapsing. That makes it substantially later than Ghost of Yōtei’s 1600s setting and gives the story a political crisis built around competing factions.
A broader toolset
Its combat is not limited to a katana and bow. You can use Japanese weapons such as katana and spear alongside pistols, grappling hooks and gliding. The result is a denser action system: weapon choice, movement and approach matter as much as simply deciding whether to duel or sneak.

Faction decisions change the role-playing emphasis
Players can align with anti-shogunate, pro-shogunate or Western factions. Those choices make Rise of the Ronin a better fit than Yōtei for someone who wants historical decisions and a more explicit role-playing identity. The trade-off is that its later period and heavier systems may feel less like a solitary cinematic samurai tale.
Open-world and PS5 considerations
Rise of the Ronin is an open-world action RPG released for PlayStation 5 in 2024. It is therefore a native current-generation option, but its appeal comes from build and weapon variety rather than from reproducing Yōtei’s exact atmosphere.
Choose it when
Choose Rise of the Ronin if your priority is experimenting with weapons, combining grappling and gliding with combat, and making faction choices in a turbulent historical period. It is the strongest alternative for players who find a single katana-centered combat loop too narrow.

- The flowers are cherry blossoms, and the JK is a samurai!
Assassin’s Creed Shadows: the broadest stealth-action RPG alternative
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the option for readers who want feudal-Japan atmosphere inside a larger stealth-action role-playing framework. PlayStation 5 is an officially supported platform. The game is positioned as a broader, checklist-driven world with two protagonists, so its structure favors varied objectives and role switching over the more concentrated samurai journey associated with Ghost of Yōtei.

Shadows makes stealth-action the organizing idea rather than an optional branch from sword combat. If your favorite Yōtei moments are scouting, infiltrating guarded locations and deciding how to remove targets quietly, this is the most natural alternative among the four.
What “broader RPG” means in practice
The larger framework changes how you spend time. Instead of focusing primarily on a single hero’s path through a cinematic open world, you are choosing activities across a bigger checklist-driven environment and switching between two protagonists. That breadth can suit players who want a long list of objectives and varied mission types; it can feel less intimate if you want every activity to reinforce one tightly paced revenge or redemption arc.
Edition and regional checks
Current editions, prices and regional stock can change. Confirm the exact PS5 edition available in your country before buying, because the official platform listing alone does not establish a universal price or a particular physical package.
Choose it when
Choose Assassin’s Creed Shadows when stealth, dual-protagonist play and a large role-playing checklist matter more than matching Yōtei’s specific combat rhythm. It is the broadest stealth-focused recommendation, not the closest one-to-one samurai replacement.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice: the hardest and most concentrated swordplay
Sekiro is the specialist choice. PlayStation describes a third-person action adventure set in 14th-century Japan, with a vast interconnected world, one-on-one duels, stealth, vertical grappling traversal and prosthetic weapons. It offers the most demanding combat here, but it is not a conventional open-world equivalent and it is not a native PS5 release.
Why its combat feels different
Sekiro rewards learning opponents and mastering direct encounters rather than relying on a relaxed cinematic sandbox. One-on-one duels are central, while stealth and prosthetic tools let you change the opening conditions of a fight. The vertical grappling system also makes movement part of combat planning, not merely a way to cross a map.
Understand the PS5 limitation
The PlayStation store categorizes Sekiro as PS4 software playable on PS5. That means you can play it on a PS5, but it should not be described as a native PS5 open-world samurai game. Its world is vast and interconnected, yet its level design is less like a single free-roaming map than the structure associated with Ghost of Tsushima or Ghost of Yōtei.
Choose it when
Pick Sekiro if your main question is “Which game will make me earn every sword victory?” Accept the higher difficulty, the more interconnected world and the PS4 backward-compatible status. Choose something else if you mainly want relaxed horseback exploration, a broad checklist of activities or the closest visual presentation to Yōtei.
Which game should you play after Ghost of Yōtei?
Choose by the feature you want to preserve
| If you want… | Choose… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The closest overall structure, tone and PS5 presentation | Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut | It shares open-world exploration, katana and bow combat, stealth, horseback travel and a native PS5 version. |
| More weapons, builds and historical faction decisions | Rise of the Ronin | Its 1863 setting and combat system include katana, spear, pistols, grappling hooks, gliding and three faction alignments. |
| A larger stealth-action RPG with two protagonists | Assassin’s Creed Shadows | Its feudal-Japan framework emphasizes stealth breadth and a checklist-driven world. |
| The hardest duels and mastery-focused combat | Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice | Its interconnected world, stealth, grappling and prosthetic tools support demanding one-on-one fights. |
Choose by your tolerance for change
- Want minimal change? Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut keeps the most familiar balance of cinematic story, open exploration, swordplay and stealth.
- Want more systems? Rise of the Ronin adds weapons and faction choices, but moves forward to 1863 and leans harder into action-RPG design.
- Want more activities and stealth roles? Assassin’s Creed Shadows expands the checklist and protagonist options rather than narrowing the experience around one samurai hero.
- Want a challenge reset? Sekiro changes the priority from sightseeing and broad exploration to precise combat mastery.
PS5 edition and physical-disc checklist
Platform labels matter because “playable on PS5” can mean two different things. Ghost of Yōtei, Rise of the Ronin and Assassin’s Creed Shadows are documented as PS5 releases or supported PS5 titles in the material above. Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut has both PS5 and PS4 versions. Sekiro is PS4 software that runs on PS5 through backward compatibility.
For a disc buyer, the clearest documented option is Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut PS5: PlayStation lists a PS5 version and a Blu-ray purchase option. A PS4 Game of the Year Edition is identified for Sekiro, but that does not establish a native PS5 disc edition. Physical availability for Rise of the Ronin, Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Ghost of Yōtei is not established by the cited descriptions, so check the listing for your region rather than assuming every platform version has the same package.
- Confirm that the product title says PS5 if native-current-generation software is important to you.
- Check whether the listing is a PS4 edition marked “playable on PS5,” as with Sekiro.
- Verify the included content: Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut combines the main campaign, Iki Island and Legends online co-op.
- Check your region’s edition, price and stock at the time of purchase; those details are not universal and can change.
Bottom line
Start with Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut for the closest open-world samurai experience and a native PS5 version. Move to Rise of the Ronin for combat variety and faction choices, Assassin’s Creed Shadows for stealth-action breadth, or Sekiro when demanding sword mastery matters more than a conventional open world.
