Games Like Ghost of Tsushima: Legends for Co-op Samurai Action (2026 Guide)

Ghost of Yōtei Legends is the closest match to Ghost of Tsushima: Legends because it is a first-party online co-op mode built on the same foundation. For a different game in a Japanese setting, choose Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition; for the most timing-focused combat regardless of setting, choose Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty.

The right choice depends on what you mean by “like Legends”: short co-op missions, class roles, supernatural enemies, samurai-era atmosphere, or demanding melee combat. This guide compares those elements directly so your group can pick a game that fits its platform, difficulty tolerance and preferred session length.

What Ghost of Tsushima: Legends sets as the benchmark

Legends is a cooperative multiplayer experience inspired by Japanese folk tales and mythology. Its identity comes from several systems working together rather than from its setting alone.

Distinct class roles

Every player chooses one of four classes: Samurai, Hunter, Ronin or Assassin. That gives a party a recognizable team structure: players are not simply using identical characters with different weapons. When comparing alternatives, look for meaningful build or role choices instead of assuming that any game with swords offers the same kind of cooperation.

#1 Best Overall
Fate Samurai Remnant
  • COOPERATION WITH SERVANTS IS THE KEY TO COMBAT
  • In Fate/Samurai Remnant, players control Miyamoto Iori, a master who studied the Niten Ichiryu style of swordsmanship. He fights alongside Saber, a servant who possesses strength beyond that of humans! When facing enemies beyond human control, players will be able to instruct their servant to attack with powerful magical techniques, or even take direct control of the servant to attack the enemy swarm. Dynamic battle scenes between servants help elevate the action to new heights and are must-see contests for fans of the series.
  • EXPLORE THE CITY OF EDO WITH SERVANTS
  • Throughout the game, players get the chance to explore the town of Edo, where row houses, samurai residences, and brothels stand side by side. Here, many people frequent the streets, and characters drawn with a distinct Japanese touch are brought to life. While following the story of the “Waxing Moon Ritual”, players will be able to interact with various characters and animals in town, explore a variety of areas, and take on a wide array of challenges as they fight for survival in the latest Holy Grail War!

Short, repeatable mission formats

The PlayStation Store description divides Legends into two-player story missions, four-player survival missions and Rivals Mode. That mix supports both a small pair looking for a focused session and a larger group that wants escalating encounters. A game with online co-op but only long, campaign-length stages will feel different even if its combat is excellent.

Supernatural samurai atmosphere

Legends combines melee combat with mythic enemies and a stylized version of Japanese folklore. A substitute can match the swordplay while missing the folklore, or match the historical period while replacing class-based missions with a conventional action RPG. The comparisons below identify those trade-offs rather than treating them as interchangeable.

At-a-glance comparison

Game Setting Co-op shape Combat and progression emphasis Best fit
Ghost of Tsushima: Legends Mythic Tsushima and Japanese folklore Two-player story, four-player survival, matchmaking and Rivals Mode Class roles and samurai melee The benchmark formula
Ghost of Yōtei Legends Mythic Japan successor setting Online co-op successor mode; current edition and platform details should be verified Builds on the foundations of Legends; Samurai players can team together The closest continuation
Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition Sengoku-period Japan and yokai Online co-op action RPG High difficulty, loot and deep character builds Players who want a harder Japanese action RPG
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Dark-fantasy Later Han/Three Kingdoms China Online co-op action RPG Chinese martial-arts swordplay, defensive timing, weapon variety and character creation Players who prioritize precision combat over Japanese setting

1. Ghost of Yōtei Legends: the closest structural follow-up

Ghost of Yōtei Legends is the natural first stop for anyone who wants the Legends format itself. PlayStation’s March 9, 2026 announcement describes an online co-op mode launching March 10, 2026 and says it builds on the foundations of Tsushima Legends. That direct lineage matters more than a superficial samurai theme: the mode is designed as a successor to the same cooperative concept.

Senjutsu: Battle for Japan - Samurai Dueling Game with Miniatures and Deck Crafting, Strategy Game for Kids and Adults, Ages 14+, 1-4 Players, 15-20 Min Playtime, Made by Lucky Duck Games
  • EPIC SAMURAI DUELS: Engage in tense, fast-paced duels as a Samurai in this captivating game.
  • STUNNING MINIATURES: Immerse yourself in the world of Samurai with beautifully crafted miniatures.
  • DECK CONSTRUCTION: Craft your unique deck using slick mechanics for devastating attacks and strategic moves.
  • 4 FEARLESS SAMURAI: Choose from four fearsome Samurai, each with their own strengths, weaknesses, and motivations.
  • THOUSANDS OF COMBINATIONS: Create your fighting style with a vast array of Ability Cards, offering endless deck possibilities.

Why it matches Legends

  • It comes from the same first-party series rather than adapting a single-player action RPG into co-op.
  • Its premise retains online team play and a mythic Japanese framing.
  • The announcement specifically notes that players can use the Samurai class together, which is useful for groups that do not want to divide into different roles.

Who should choose it

Choose Ghost of Yōtei Legends if your group’s favorite part of Legends is the combination of coordinated classes, Japanese folklore and a purpose-built online mode. It is also the safest choice when you want familiar presentation and rules instead of learning a completely different progression system.

Important availability check

Ghost of Yōtei Legends is tied to the Ghost of Yōtei ecosystem and PlayStation availability. Before buying or scheduling a session, verify the current edition, supported platform and any access requirement shown for your region. The launch date establishes when the mode was announced to arrive, not a guarantee that every edition or territory exposes identical access terms.

2. Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition: the strongest Sengoku-Japan alternative

Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition is the best non-PlayStation setting match in this shortlist. Its Steam listing identifies it as a February 5, 2021 action RPG set in Sengoku-period Japan, where players battle yokai, and lists online co-op. That gives it the historical atmosphere and supernatural opposition that Legends players often seek.

Rank #3
Gurei - PlayStation 5
  • You are free to pick your fights against the Kami in any order. The game features a dynamic difficulty system where each enemy strength is defined by the player’s chosen path. This means that the very same Kami fought at the very beginning could also be the final boss in a different route. Hope to never leave the one you struggle most to fight last!
  • Besides sword attacks, dodges, head stomps and other basic abilities, Rei will learn a completely new skill for each defeated Kami. Those will provide further depth to your combat arsenal, be it a stronger dash, a weapon that can execute enemies, the ability to heal and many more!
  • Player choice is the ultimate power. Taking into account the vastly distinct enemies’ patterns and unique skills granted upon each victory, you will be able to decide how to approach every challenge. It won’t be easy either way, but you can always go back and try something different.
  • Gurei is a game about fighting strong enemies, but that’s not all. The Kami inhabit a surreal castle located between the human and spirit worlds. After each victory, Rei comes closer to the realm of spirits, starting to encounter peculiar characters from Japanese mythology. These creatures will add novelty and strangeness to your journey, providing commentary, unique animations, side objectives and obscure secrets.
  • You will get to know the different Kami quite well. When Rei defeats them, she absorbs their power and their personality. The defeated Kami will be carried around wherever Rei goes, and they’ll surely have stuff to talk about. Sometimes their remarks will be useful information that builds the player’s understanding of the lore and the game mechanics, but sometimes they will be... not so helpful, to put it briefly. Good luck!

Where it feels similar

  • The setting is recognizably Japanese and rooted in a period of war rather than a generic fantasy kingdom.
  • Yokai provide a supernatural threat comparable in spirit to Legends’ folklore-inspired enemies.
  • Online co-op lets friends tackle the action RPG together.

Where it diverges

Nioh 2 is substantially more demanding and more system-heavy. It is described as a difficult “masocore” action RPG, and its missions, loot and build complexity are central to the experience. Instead of selecting a compact class identity and immediately reading a teammate’s role, players spend more time refining equipment and character setups. Repeated difficult encounters are part of the design, not an occasional challenge mode.

What that means for a Legends group

A group moving to Nioh 2 should expect a steeper learning curve and more preparation between missions. The reward is a deeper action-RPG loop for players who enjoy experimenting with builds and overcoming demanding fights. If your party mainly wants quick, role-based runs with minimal inventory management, Nioh 2 may feel slower and harsher than the benchmark.

3. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty: precision combat with online co-op

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a March 3, 2023 dark-fantasy Three Kingdoms action RPG from Team NINJA. Its Steam description highlights swordplay based on Chinese martial arts, character creation and online co-op. It is the combat-first recommendation in this list.

Why the combat appeals to Legends players

Wo Long emphasizes fast offensive and defensive timing. Success depends on reading attacks, responding at the right moment and using weapon options intelligently rather than relying only on damage output. That makes it a good fit for players who remember Legends primarily for satisfying melee exchanges and coordinated reactions.

The setting trade-off

This is China, not Japan. The historical frame is the Later Han and Three Kingdoms period, and its supernatural fiction draws on that mythology. It can deliver a dark, legendary atmosphere, but it does not provide samurai culture or Japanese folklore. Select it when combat feel and co-op matter more than geographic authenticity.

Build and party considerations

Character creation gives each player room to establish a personal style. That flexibility is useful when friends want different weapons or approaches, but it also means the party structure is less directly analogous to Legends’ four named classes. Treat it as a cooperative action RPG with martial-arts timing, not as a one-to-one replacement for Samurai, Hunter, Ronin and Assassin roles.

How to choose for your group

Choose by setting

  • Mythic Japan and the closest series continuity: Ghost of Yōtei Legends.
  • Sengoku history with yokai: Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition.
  • Chinese historical fantasy: Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty.

Choose by combat demand

  • Class-readable teamwork: Ghost of Yōtei Legends is the closest continuation of the Legends model.
  • Loot-driven, highly demanding encounters: Nioh 2.
  • Precision timing and martial-arts swordplay: Wo Long.

Choose by session expectations

Legends’ two-player story missions and four-player survival missions make party size a defining feature. Ghost of Yōtei Legends is the most likely to preserve that kind of mode-focused structure, although you should confirm the current mode details for your edition. Nioh 2 and Wo Long are online co-op action RPGs; plan for a broader campaign and progression loop rather than assuming every activity will mirror a short survival run.

A practical buying and setup checklist

  1. Confirm the platform first. Ghost of Yōtei Legends is tied to PlayStation availability. Check the edition and region your group actually owns before comparing gameplay.
  2. Count the players. If you regularly play as two people, verify that the game’s co-op activities support a pair. If you need four-player survival-style sessions, do not infer that capability from a generic “online co-op” label.
  3. Agree on difficulty. Nioh 2 is explicitly positioned as a difficult masocore action RPG. Discuss whether everyone is willing to repeat challenging encounters and learn its systems.
  4. Decide how much build management you want. Nioh 2’s loot and build complexity are core features. Wo Long offers character creation and weapon variety. Groups seeking straightforward class identities should favor the Ghost successor.
  5. Settle the setting compromise. If Japanese atmosphere is non-negotiable, choose Ghost of Yōtei Legends or Nioh 2. If responsive combat is the priority, Wo Long is worth accepting despite its Chinese setting.
  6. Check current access terms. Release dates and store descriptions do not guarantee identical regional editions, multiplayer requirements or included content. Read the current platform listing before purchase.

What changes when you leave Legends

From classes to character builds

Legends gives players four named roles that are easy to understand at a glance. Nioh 2 and Wo Long instead place more responsibility on equipment, weapons and character configuration. Your group may need to communicate about builds rather than simply calling out which class each person selected.

From mode selection to action-RPG progression

The Legends comparison point is a set of defined multiplayer activities: story, survival and Rivals Mode. Nioh 2 and Wo Long are described as action RPGs with online co-op, so the campaign and character-growth loop are more central. Expect progression decisions to persist across sessions and to shape how difficult encounters feel.

From Japanese folklore to broader mythic fiction

Ghost of Yōtei Legends preserves the Japanese mythic direction. Nioh 2 uses Sengoku Japan and yokai. Wo Long moves to the Later Han and Three Kingdoms world, where Chinese mythology replaces Japanese folklore. The emotional tone can remain dark and legendary, but the cultural references and visual language will change.

Bottom line for three common player types

  • “I want Legends, only newer.” Start with Ghost of Yōtei Legends, then verify your PlayStation edition and regional access.
  • “I want samurai-era Japan and supernatural enemies, and I am happy to work for every victory.” Choose Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition.
  • “I care most about sharp, timing-based swordplay and playing online with friends.” Choose Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, accepting that its setting is Three Kingdoms China rather than Japan.
